All the servers have been busting their butts during this World Cup run and have done a phenomenal job. Matthew was our server in the back room and he deserves special props for going above and beyond in taking care of our party. So friendly and such a pleasant attitude, and looked out for us during the Cup Final, making sure we could get seats together for my friend's family with kids. Best server there!! Very short staffed. Waited 30 minutes to seat with several tables available. No hostess . Waiter played hostess and clean the tables. Took another 30 minutes to take my order. The food was very good but a little cold. A little wait for our food.The band sounded good. The bar was stacked with dirty glasses ready to be washed. They could not keep up. Same with the dirty tables. Several customers walked away. Our server was pleasant and did the best he could considering the circumstances. Absolutely wonderful service and the food is one of the closest I've come to what I've experienced on my trips to Germany! I highly recommend if you love German bier! Went to watch a World Cup game over the weekend and absolutely loved my time there! The seating arrangement is fun and makes it super easy to socialize with other fans. The beer list is extensive and can be daunting but I say just pick based off the description and you won't be disappointed. I got some schnitzel too that was quite nice, a little bit soggy due to the sauce but nice flavor. The cucumber salad was the best part of the dish. Servers come around a little infrequently but thankfully the beer servings are large so not much attention is needed. Will definitely come back soon for another match! read more

It's a German bar. Slender and quaint. Not necessarily actual Bauhaus designed. But, close enough. Typical German cuisine, beers, and themes. It's helpful, not required to know how to speak, read or write German, and or Dutch. But, you feel like you should know a little. Latkes are good a little too salty for me. But good. Brauhaus Schmitz lived up to the hype when our group of 6 stopped by for dinner after spending the day at the Christmas Market.   As you enter the front of the restaurant the welcoming tone is set by the decor and layout of the bar and tables. The back room resembles a beer garden with long tables, decorations, and a second bar.  Service was great with a good balance of attention and space. Everyone we met was very welcoming.   The drink menu offered many options from cocktails to a large selection of German draft beers.  Everyone enjoyed the food! The bread basket was a nice way to start off and was followed by an order of the potato pancakes and the meatballs. The majority of the party ordered the jager schnitzel, which covered the plate and was tasty. The wurste plate offered a variety of different sausages.  The sauerbraten with red cabbage was good and the side of spaetzle rounded out the meal.  We will definitely return as it is hard to find good German food in the area! read more

Brauhaus Schmitz truly embodies the essence of German beer and cuisine. Brauhaus boasts an impressive selection of beer. Due to the nature of German cuisine, you may find it difficult to find any food options when dining if you have any dietary restrictions. (But, they do carry other alcohols besides beer.) -- Highlights: Beer and jägerschnitzel (breaded pork cutlet) were phenomenal! -- I've dined a few times at Brauhaus and the first thing you'll notice is the interior is spacious, casual, and full of a crowd of regulars. It feels like you're teleported to Germany! There's special events regularly, such as Oktoberfest this month. I've found the service to usually be somewhat slow, even if there are only a few others present. However, the staff is always exceedingly friendly. In terms of food, it will be difficult for a vegetarian or vegan or anyone with a gluten allergy to dine here. Although, they are incredibly mindful of cross-contamination, they are limited in the menu options they can provide, as much of the menu consists of breaded and/or meat options. (And menu item names are in German, so I would recommend viewing photos!) Personally, I found many dishes to be just OK, but I'd highly recommend the laugenbrezel (Bavarian pretzel) and the jägerschnitzel (breaded pork cutlet). Also, you will be leaving with leftovers whenever you dine there, which is a huge plus! The beer at Brauhaus comes in excellent portions and is of great variety. We've been here two times so far. The first time we sat at the bar and just got drinks and it was wonderful. The bartender was very friendly to everyone who wanted to chat at the bar and gave us some "insider" knowledge about the beers on tap and let us try some. We came back a few months later for dinner and sat at a table. The food was okay. We got a salad plate, a pork schnitzel sandwich and potato pancakes. We had such a great time here. The space was really nice. Our server Morgan was really sweet and attentive. The food was delicious- really enjoyed the krabbenbrezel (pretzel covered with crab dip). Their beer selection was immense given they were all German beer. It was fun trying beer we've never had before. My hubs had to add the flambé- it was entertaining but also gave the pork a nice extra crisp and flavor. And they were kind and gifted our friends their beers for their birthdays. The interior is nice, with a German feel to it. Beer selection is fine as well. I've eaten there twice and both times the fiod was average. Not great/not bad. On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the restaurant wasn't crowded. We were sitting across the bar to watch German soccer game. The bartender was very accommodating to our request to put the game on tv. Warm pretzel came out fast. I got my favorite German black beer, brussel sprouts, and goulash. Brussel sprouts were super tiny, served with diced bacon. The bacon was chewy and fatty. The glazed balsamic reduction gave sweetness to this appetizer. Good flavor but I wished the brussel sprouts were bigger. Goulash was perfect for this rainy day. Beef was very tender and flavorful. Major fail with my takeout order today. I got a bratwurst sandwich to go. Not only did the kitchen use an incredibly stale roll, they forgot the sauerkr aut (which is an extra charge), and the side order- I had requested spatzle v potato salad - I did not get either. The weird thing, I also requested spicy mustard, same box as the spatzle, not only did I receive it but got a 1/2 of small container of it. I might have been more forgiving if it was super packed and busy...there was a decent crowd but nothing crazy. Tasty German restaurant. Brauhaus Schmitz is designed like a German food and beer hall and was cutely decorated for Christmas when we visited. The selection of German beer was excellent, and I tried a couple over the course of the evening. We split the laugenbrezel, kartoffelpuffer, and salatteller as starters, and I tried the gemusespatzle as my main. The laugenbrezel was as good as any pretzel that I have tried. The katoffelpuffer has a tasty applesauce, but the pancakes themselves were a bit dense. Each of the salads in salatteller had an interesting flavor and complemented each other well. The gemusespatzle was rich and decadent although the whole red peppercorns completely detracted from the dish. Overall, Brauhaus Schmitz is a fine option for German food, and I would recommend them for dinner. read more

Attended their Super Bowl party yesterday and it was absolutely incredible. To have the food be that tastey when made in mass is impressive. Plenty of food as well with multiple drops throughout the game. The beer and drinks were flowing and delicious as well. But best of all was the service. We were so lucky to find parking right in front of the entrance to the restaurant. We had shoved a lot into one day as we were visiting for the weekend and leaving the next day. But I digress This restaurant was on my list for a while as I looked for German restaurants "close" to me (will drive for food). I love the ambiance. We should have ordered the cheese spatzle but got the plain and was it ever plain, no flavor whatsoever. BUT if you added the beer cheese was fantastic and spicy. The potato pancakes were decent but really dense. The apple sauce was good too and so was the kraut. The mains were a variety of sausage which were also good. I love this place! But I'll also admit I used to live in Germany and I love all things German, so a German themed restaurant can do no wrong by me. Come here for the ambiance and decor alone. The interior is gorgeous with so many decorative details that pay homage to ze Vaterland. If you're a fan of German beer, you literally can't find a better place in the city. The beer list is phenomenal with 31 beers on tap, exclusively German or German style beers. Bonus points for having my hometown brewery on tap with Haddonfield's Kings Road Brewery's altbier. If you don't find something good on tap, they have an even longer list of bottles to choose from. I've been here tons of times over the years, both for your average beer/dinner night out and also for special events like South Street's Oktoberfest and today's brunch with Santa. Brought my 8 year old son today and it was a well organized event with an all-you-can-eat buffet of a vast variety of food. My son especially loved the hot chocolate bar with different toppings (sprinkles, chocolate spoons, marshmallows, etc. not to mention a giant bottle of Fireball they left for grownups). Brauhaus Schmitz makes you feel like you're escaping Philadelphia to leave for Germany to drink beer with the bois in a large beer hall like of those you see in movies! This where my friend group goes on Friday nights to drink good beer and catch up. Brauhaus Schmitz is Amazing. They have around 40 beers on tap and you don't really know what you're getting. But it's all German beer so you know you can't go wrong. They also have meals and small bites as well if you don't want to drink on an empty stomach. I think their pretzel is a good choice. The service is excellent. If they mess up your beer order, they usually just give you the extra beer. They're very nice about making sure that everyone is drinking the right beer. Brauhaus Schmitz has so much space for large parties. Usually there's 10 of us that go and visit and we've always been able to get a table. It's designed for groups to drink together which is hard to find in Philly. I love this place. I frequent it a lot and will continue coming back. read more
