    Vegan feijoada
    Matt B.

Having just got back from Brazil and having loved the vegan feijoadas down there, I decided to try theirs out. I ordered delivery through DoorDash, and my order was on my doorstep 40 mins later. They advertise their vegan feijoada as ($12), but that's for a small (300g) order; their large (600g) is $20, and is not really that large, as I needed a big snack a couple hours later. Regardless, the quality: the black bean stew was solid, nicely spiced, with some slices of vegan sausage, served on rice and sauteed kale, with toasted cassava flour (as per traditionally served) and salsa (not traditional). The depth of flavours in the stew were good, but shy of amazing -- it did not rival the ones we had in Brazil and left something to be desired. It is better than the vegan feijoada from Boteco (on Nanaimo) though. Overall, decent spot, just not great value for money.

It's tucked away on Nanaimo & East Broadway, not a super busy area, but we noticed lots of Brazilian guests dining here. That's always a good sign! What we ordered: * Picanha Verão - A special Brazilian sirloin cut, served with a light hearts of palm salad. We're usually not sirloin steak people, but this dish completely surprised us. Juicy, flavourful, and a must-order signature plate! * Bobó de Camarão - Shrimp in creamy coconut milk sauce with rice & salad. The sauce was rich and comforting, we couldn't stop spooning it over the rice. * Dados de Tapioca - Crispy fried tapioca cubes dipped in sweet pepper jelly. Sweet, savoury, and chewy! It was such a unique appetizer. * Bolinho de Bacalhau - Cod croquettes with a mashed potato inside dough. Golden and speical. * Pudim de Leite Moça - Condensed milk flan. Smooth, creamy, and absolutely heavenly. Another must order! * Brigadeiro - Chocolate truffle ball coated in sprinkles. A classic Brazilian sweet treat. * Beijinho - Sweet coconut ball, soft and chewy. We paired everything with a fruity Batida de Frutas (mango) and the classic Caipirinha. Perfect match for the food and patio vibes. Overall, a hidden gem that transports you to Brazil through food, music, and vibes. We'll definitely be back to explore more dishes! Food:  5/5 Must Try! Service: 5/5 Kids: 4/5 Yay! Price: $30-$40 each person (dinner) Presentation: 2/5 Parking:  Free street parking in the neighbourhood. Tips: * Large outdoor patio seating - perfect for summer nights * Live music on certain evenings * Huge variety of Brazilian dishes to try * Happy Hour (Tue-Fri, 3-6pm) * Have a food truck around the city * Catering services available Would I Return: Yes ‍

Parking is available on the side streets. The venue has a large covered E facing patio, which is great on summer days. There is also a crowded indoor dining area. The evening my buddy and I went, there was also live music. As of the time of writing, there is a $6 mandatory "cover charge" on these evenings. Something to keep in mind. Staff were friendly but service was slow. Mind you the place was pretty full. Caipirinha - buddy said he saw them using a mix instead of simply using raw ingredients (I couldn't see as I was facing away from the bar). The curious thing was that although I ordered a double, there was way more liquid in the glass than there should be in an "authentic" version. With that said, I actually can't complain, as I just thought of it as more drink. Mini coxinha - 10 tasty crispy chicken and potato croquette bites with aioli sauce (extra charge). Nice and tasty. Picanha - 8oz steak, seasoned Korsch (no idea what this means). The fatty edge was there. Steak was a wee bit tough, but no biggie. I had mine rare. Buddy had his steak medium rare, and said it was ridiculously tough compared to other places. I tried a piece and it was fine to me. Maybe I just have low standards. Served with farofa (cassava meal), brown beans, fries, rice, and salsa. Definitely a unique combo. The band was singing a mix of songs. Heads up - the songs aren't exactly Brazilian. Guantanamera is as Brazilian as a Cohiba, and they were also singing some songs in Spanish instead of Portuguese. With that said, I imagine the layman wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the vibe. Overall the experience was okay, but the steep pricing and slow service and mandatory music cover charge make me a bit hesitant to come back. But there aren't really many other options in town for the Brazilian experience. Maybe come try it once.

They sell a bunch of Brazilian snacks but overall the inside of the store looked worn out. We came in on a Sunday morning and no one was at the front. I rang the bell and a young girl came to take our order. She was sweet but looked very stressed. She ran to the back and was on the phone with her boss frantically asking for help. She then came running out and told us it'll be a wait because she needs to get a big order out. I replied no problem and went to grab a seat. After awhile I rang the bell again and asked for a refund and said I would return another time. The girl said she could make the food now. The next few minutes all we heard was the microwave constantly going off and it was clear nothing was made fresh. Feijoada: apparently this is their most popular dish and I liked the vibrant colours. However the pork was overcooked and nothing tasted fresh except for the slice of orange. Strogonoff: the creamy sauce was not bad but it was so salty we were really thirsty after. The chicken was overcooked. Coxinha: I was excited to try tradition Brazilian croquettes but these were clearly frozen and again didn't taste fresh.

It looked like a coffee shop with their drinks and cakes, but also serves some Brazilian staples (feijoada, coxinha etc.). The theme is definitely on the casual side. There is a nice small covered patio in front. My biggest complaint was that the service was just atrocious. When I walked in, there was 1 customer in front of me. She was jabbering with the staff in Portuguese. The staff (both of them) saw me standing there and just ignored me. After a minute, I grabbed a menu off the table and stood there holding it. They looked at me again and kept on chatting with that customer. After a few minutes, another (3rd) customer arrived. This customer was confused too, as she couldn't tell if there was a lineup, since I was just standing around staring at the gaggle behind the counter. She then stood behind me and also waited for a few minutes, while the staff continued to ignore both of us. Total wait time was 12-13 minutes(!) before someone behind the counter decided to acknowledge our existence. Considering there were a total of 3 customers (not including a small group already seated), this is quite unacceptable. It was like the staff were there to socialize. The staff are obviously local Brazilians, as the cashier didn't have the best English. He didn't know what decaf was. Fortunately I had Google Translate. I ordered a flat white. They make this thing automatically with the push of a button. In other words, the coffee machine is similar to those found at car dealerships. I guess the redeeming factors was that the coffees here are quite inexpensive, and the flat white tasted decent for a generic coffee. My other complaint is that the cakes aren't made in house. Looks like they're made by a local bakery (Sinatra's). Price is definitely on the high side, but the carrot cake I had was very decent. I really wanted to like this place, but honestly have trouble recommending it. The service was atrocious, the coffees are office/gas station grade, and the cakes can just be obtained directly from the bakery supplier. Guess I'm going elsewhere for my next coffee/dessert fix.

However, a poster map of Baixa Pombalina, the Baixa district of Lisbon rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake under the direction of the Marques de Pombal, will be looking at you from the cash register. Locals coming from Portugal definitely frequent this business, close to the intersection of Broadway and Commercial Drive, and many speak in their native language. The owners and the patrons are very friendly. One should stop by to try a pastry and some coffee ... or tea. Also, if you've ever tried, and liked, Sumol, the Portuguese soft drink which comes in orange, pineapple, and passion fruit, you can buy it here. You can also buy other groceries. I recommend coming in the morning for the pastry and coffee. The pastries are pasteis de nata, the traditional Portuguese custard tarts "born" in Lisbon's Belem district, and it's impossible to eat just one. So, for an inexpensive pastry and coffee, meeting some nice folks from across the Atlantic, and doing something atypical while in Vancity, check this place out.
