This is a little gem near the Joyce skytrain area. You can find authentic Latin snacks, pastries and cakes. Everyone speaks Spanish whether you call or go in person, there is only employee names Leslie though who does speak fluent English. The store sort of reminds me of the little snack stores in all inclusive resorts, with a dessert fridge and trays of pastries. Everything made fresh and decently priced. We recently ordered the 8" tres leche cake for $65, and it is massive! I know it's soaked in three milks, but it was so heavy... it's finished with whipped cream and fruit, and you can choose either coconut or chocolate for the outside. We chose coconut for a less sweet option -!: it was delicious, super moist and tasty. It's a very rich cake though with all the whipped cream, so you can't eat too large a slice. There were plenty of leftovers, so we pre sliced them and freezer them. They defrost in the fridge overnight and taste so good again the next day. My South American friends love the food here, particularly the empanadas and baked goods. I finally got to try the stuff here. It was closed the last time I came here. Due to Covid-19, the other door was closed and there was no dining area. One side of the store was the non perishable products such as snacks and condiments. I saw the Mexican spice Tajin here. There were a couple of freezers holding perishable frozen items. The main door is where you can get the baked stuff including cakes and sandwiches and empanadas. I bought two cake slices. One was the tuxedo truffle and I had no idea what the other was. I thought it was flan but it did not taste like it. Very rich and heavy. I did not really like the tuxedo truffle either. The cake part was a bit dry and the chocolate was not the nice type (but I am a chocolate snob). Costco tuxedo cake is way better! The chicken empanada was cold so I had to heat it up in the oven at home. Not sure why they did not give me the one which was already heated up. The chicken filling was delicious but the crust was hard and a bit dry. It could be due to me leaving it in oven for too long. If you like South American food, come here to get them soon. Panaderia has become one of my go-to lunch spots for something quick to collect and enjoy at home. The usually order is composed of empanadas and a sweet to share. What can I say, all of their empanadas are golden crispy with a not to flakey crust and filled on the inside with flavour. Hands down, the espinaca/spinach is my favorite. Gotta should out to their sweets! Because this bakery has the cutest window stuffed with yummy baked goodies. I came for the empanadas, but I stayed for the pastels. Panaderia is a little slice of food heaven. On one side you have a mini supermarket with Latin spices, ingredients, and treats, and then on the other side you have the bakery where you can order a variety of Latin goods to go. The empanadas are a must! I recommend both the chicken and the beef. If you aren't a meat eater, the spinach and cheese one is also divine. The empanada crust is buttery, flaky, and melts right in your mouth, which I love. The real treat for me though is the Brazilian pastels, which is basically a rectangular shaped fried pastry stuffed with meats and cheeses. It is heavenly. My arteries may not thank me, but my taste buds sure do. This is a family owned business and all the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I've been meaning to try their Chacarero for awhile and boy I wasn't disappointed. While I got a square shaped take out container for $11.50 I was pleasantly surprised to open it stuffed to the brim with the sandwich and fixins. The lady behind the counter mentioned that they make the meat only when it's ordered so it takes a little longer (10 mins or so) but it was worth the wait. Nice sweetened bun, good tomatoes, excellent steak and green beans. I could only eat half the sandwich and saved the rest for later. It brought back some nice memories of a South American adventure long ago. The Bread Pudding tasted natural but it had shredded coconut inside with the raisins, which was quite unusual. They should name it Coconut Bread Pudding because not everyone likes coconut. Also, I chewed something crunchy like sea salt in the bread pudding. It was unexpected. Surprisingly, the Dark Chocolate Cake only had chocolate flakes coated around the cake; there was no chocolate inside the cake. It had a layer of caramel between two layers of vanilla cake. The whole cake was not too sweet, but its name was misleading. The cake did not taste like dark chocolate, and they should include caramel as part of the name for the cake. The Tiramisu looked and tasted like the ones in supermarkets. It was disappointing. The service was okay. However, I expect better quality of their products for their price. read more

Being a Chilena myself (and having grown up on traditional Chilean cooking), I tend to have some pretty high standards when it comes to the cuisine, but ya know what? All of these standards have been met at Panaderia Latina Bakery (Yaaaaaayyy!). So what do I recommend to a first time go-er or 'gringo'? 1) Chacarero - Made to order, this big sandwich consists of homemade bread, a thin slice of steak, tomato, green beans and mayo. It's a sloppy taste of heaven. 2) The Empanada de pino (a meat empanada). This is the most traditional Chilean dish you can have. I could go into a long description about what's in it and what makes it amazing, but I'll save you the time and say - just go get one. It's the bees knees, n'kay? **FACT: Any good Chileno/Chilena will tell you that his/her mother makes THE BEST empanadas. The truth is, they're all wrong. MY mamá makes the best empanadas. It's a tiny shop, family-run. They speak perfect, flawless English, btw, which for some odd reason, came as a total shock to me. So, if you're sandwich aficionado, do yourself a favour and visit here. I can't think of another place in the Lower Mainland that makes sandwiches like this. There's a taste of the Old World traditions infused with New World ingredients. These are inexpensive, working-class sandwiches meant to keep you full for a day of labour. Some people will like this kind of sandwich, some won't. I find the recipe fascinating though from a cultural perspective. The choice of a brioche-like bread, buttered on both sides; stewed green beans; thinly-sliced, well-done beef. Tomatoes and mayo. The combination of these ingredients is not common in this post-hipster Instagram age. The sandwich scene in Vancouver is heavily influenced by Italian style porquetta sandwiches (Meat & Bread), Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, versions of roast beef sandwiches, and Cubans. It's rare to find a sandwich that exists completely outside of those styles. The pastry was a bit too sweet for me. Everything looked very pretty though. I discovered this place while looking for Mexican Rosca de Reyes in Vancouver, then forgot about it for a few years. Returned this year for some Pan de Muerto to celebrate Día de Muertos. Good thing I called in the morning to reserve my bread, as there was high demand this year. The Pan de Muerto didn't quite look like the one from the old country, but the taste and texture were spot on. The family loved it. The staff is friendly and chatty; I felt I stepped into a Mexican panadería that also sells Queso Oaxaca, Chocolate Abuelita, plus goodies like Canelitas, Choco Roles, Krankys and other staples of my childhood junk food. They do not only have baked pastries and merengues from all over Latin America, but also sell meat empanadas and tortas. I was very disappointed we arrived at 6:35pm were greeted by a man behind bakery case... not at all friendly was like pulling teeth trying to get him to talk. We were ready to order and were told that because they close at 7pm they stopped making sandwich they only had empanadas available so we ordered empanadas my son wanted cheese empanadas and they were out of those also... we ended getting the meat empanadas that really weren't that good too much onions and spices cumin is the one I tasted the most. They did have some bread with was good and a wide range of bakery goods that we got... also was disappointed that they really didn't have any Chilean things like Coffee, crackers, juices or other things. As a Chilean I must say I tried a sandwich and was impressed by the taste, it was on point. The food was fantastic but if you're planning on eating in be prepared to wait to find a table not too much room to sit there. On a separate note, the gentleman behind the counter could use some help on his customer service, never smiled and was not one for small talk or advice, seemed extremely indifferent about customers wanting to know more about his dishes. * Chilean bakery, sandwiches, and grocery * I'm a big fan of this place. It is primarily a bakery, but also offers sandwiches and has a small grocery section offering Latin products. The operators are Chilean, and they offer Chilean sandwiches as well as Chilean pastries. I had the chacarero sandwich (sliced beef with tomatoes and green beans). The meat was clearly prepared to order as it was hot from the grill. This is a messy sandwich that drips down your hands. The bread is made in-house and a bit crunch on the outside and the soft inside soaks up the juices nicely. The green beans were slightly pickled, giving a flavour similar to nopalitos. A nice sandwich! They have dozens of different pastries including several that heavily feature the housemade manjar blanco (dulce de leche). I had a cone shaped pastry that was filled with vanilla cream and dipped into manjar blanco. It was delicious. The pastry shell was nice and flaky, the vanilla cream didn't have any of that nasty artificial taste it so frequently can, and the manjar blanco was creamy, rich, sticky, and delicious! They also have sweet empanadas filled with (you guessed it) manjar blanco and another with housemade pineapple jam. These are more of the cookie style empanadas that crumble a bit. I've sampled these on previous trips, and enjoy them as well. On a future trip I'm planning to try their savoury empanadas, which are a house specialty too! P.S. I have gone here so many times, I work at Metrotown and have introduced over twenty of my co-workers to the place and we all keep coming back even though it is two skytrain stops and a few minutes walk to get to. Although it is a bakery and they do make great cakes and deserts it is the sandwiches that keep me coming back. My usual orders is a chicken or beef empanada (I get one of these because the sandwiches are made to order and can take up to 10 minutes to be made) to start and a guaton (large) chacarero sandwich (sliced beef and shredded green beans and tomatoes) to share with a friend (it's too big for most people to finish on their own). I always ask for the spicy sauce which makes it even more delicious. You can get a small sandwich for about $7 or the large which is twice the size for around $10. Worth every penny. There are tables to eat at with free hot sauce etc. There can buy a variety of drinks, many from South America available in cans or bottles. There is a big screen TV usually playing Spanish language programming or international soccer matches. You can also stock up on hot sauce or other ingredients for cooking at reasonable prices. read more

Had an Empanada craving so I made the drive over to this place. 1 Beef, 1 Chicken and 1 Cheese Please. The beef was very tasty and had a few olives as a nice surprise. The chicken was OK. The Cheese was the star but is was in more of a puff pastry than the others. Now what looked really good were the steak sandwiches every one sitting down was eating. This place by far one of the BEST sandwiches that I've ever had! Aside from the empanadas, pupusas, and many wonderful looking pastries (which will be tried at a later date) that they have, they also serve terrific sandwiches. I tried their famed Chacarero Sandwich and holy it was so filling! It doesn't look like much but you'll go into food coma after eating it! The steak is so juicy and tasty and the green beans...didn't think they'd work in a sandwich but they were so soft, they made the thing taste and feel more filling! The bread though is the real masterpiece. Not sure what's in it, but it was quite thick and reminded me of foccacia, in taste, a bit. Once and awhile if you have spent any time in the southern cone of South America you just gotta have a real Chilean empanada pino style, not those tiny bites the neolatin restaurants offer but a big honken handful of meaty goodness, so head on over, grab one of the few tables and watch the pre-recorded Chilean TV shows while digging into a real empanada, the comings and goings of the locals are also entertaining, some people travel a long way for a Chilean empanada. Their various deserts are very good for you dulce de leche fans but call it manjar when you are there, they will smile all the wider, try the torte mil hojas, then go for a quick 5k run. read more
