I've had this spot on my list to try for awhile and finally had an opportunity! The previous stellar reviews are all accurate, so I'll just summarize my highlights: - prices are crazy reasonable, especially for this area of BK - portions are GREAT. I'm not sure what a few people are complaining about, particularly around this price point I've yet to find a better tasting / better quality option, unless you're hitting up a grocery store's premade deli dept. - it is absolutely true that you aren't getting a traditional Vietnamese banh-mi from here, but that doesn't make it any less delicious (though even I found the ratio of carrots to be a tad heavy, even though I love carrots) and honestly I don't think I would expect authentic Vietnamese sandwiches from here to begin with when you review the rest of their offerings and can clearly tell they aren't a Vietnamese restaurant - egg sandwiches should be an all-day offering everywhere and it's just extra delightful that they are here. - definitely go for a fun sandwich spread to enhance your experience - I ordered delivery and it came lightning fast, with the sandwiches STILL WARM. A must whenever I'm in NYC, especially the Porchetta! So rich and decadent and a wonderful delight. The cast iron chicken is also great (and not as rich and heavy as the porchetta), and I also love the Giardino. Unfortunately I have yet to try any of their bánh mì, mostly because I always go back to my faves. The interior is small and can get warm (especially on hotter days), but honestly these sandwiches are made to be taken on the go and eaten at a park or by the water. We found this gem after we visited the flea market. We were looking everywhere for cheaper food and we were so discouraged by the smell from one of the restaurants in the area. When we were almost giving up, we came across their door and thought they are closed because the door wasn't huge and super welcoming. BUT!!!! We went in anyway because we have no self control and too curious. SO GLAD we weren't too shy to go in because we would have missed such an amazing little restaurant. There's not much option but a few good ones are already good enough. Everything sound very good so even though there's not a ton of options, I still had a hard time choosing. We ended up getting the beef short rib with blueberry jam and arugula. I was a little iffy in the beginning because I'm not a big fan of the peppery/bitter taste of arugula but it works! There is not much customer service going on here. You are on your own here haha. The person behind the counter was facetiming their friend when I came in. The service is also slow so be ready for that. Not a ton of choices here but they do have some specials. $13 for a small porcetta sandwich is a bit much but it was good. Porcetta is hard to find so great to see them doing it right. The steak sandwich special was not steak. It was short rib so I didn't get why they named it steak. When I ordered it the staff almost seemed surprised. The chicken caprese sandwich tasted like a chicken and mozzarella sandwich. It wasn't too kicked up and was pretty average. Not sure this place justifies the high rating. The porcetta sandwich was the standout so if you come I would definitely order that. Other than that everything was average. read more

I'm not a big breakfast person, but on terrible and/or slightly hungover workdays, my favorite mid-morning indulgence was always Bread and Spread's breakfast sandwich (ciabatta, bacon, cheddar, with arugula, tomato, and extra hot sauce) and a cold brew. This is the best upgraded breakfast sandwich that money can buy - especially in DUMBO, where I count Sweetgreen as a 'cheap' lunch option. Definitely not your standard bodega BEC, but if you're looking for something slightly extra ('slightly extra': the title of my memoir), this is the one. Now that we are all homebound, this is no longer a local option for me, but I honestly think about walking 90 minutes to get one sometimes. Also, one time I was here and one of the employees was giving out samples of gluten-free banana bread she had baked (which sadly, they weren't selling by the slice). This banana bread was so good I would occasionally walk by just to look in the window and see if they had any. I never encountered it again, but maybe when the world reopens I'll have more luck??? Anyway, the moral of this story is that if you are close enough to get takeout or delivery from Bread and Spread, you 100% should - and I will live vicariously through your meal. read more

Juicy meat, and the gingered shallot and blackberry jam cuts the fat and balances out the flavor well. Not to mention they have a wide variety of hot sauces available if you dine-in! Bread and Spread is my new favorite lunch spot in the neighborhood. I know this restaurant has existed here for a few years tucked away and hidden inside of the building next door, but it was only after their move to a standalone storefront that I visited. Still, the place is relatively hidden from street view, so you may walk right past it without discovering this gem. I've been twice now, each time getting one of their specialty sandwiches from the menu above the counter. The first time, I grabbed the Tuscan Roast Turkey sandwich which includes moist sliced turkey, crispy onions, and a delicious cranberry mustard on a toasted hero. This was right around Thanksgiving so it hit all the right nostalgic spots, also well balanced with the fats of the meat, sweetness and a little sour from the mustard, and crispy saltiness from the onions. The next time I went I tried their Beef Short Rib sandwich and my life was changed! Short rib, gingered shallot, blackberry jam, swiss cheese, all on a sourdough roll, this master creation was perfect in every way. My new favorite sandwich in the city. So I came in with the wrong expectations and probably ordered the wrong thing. I ordered the lemongrass tofu banh mi. Was super basic and also felt like they just squeezed like the flavor on the tofu, but was not marinated or anything else. I paid $9 which if the sandwich was good is okay for DUMBO prices. They grill their own meat and that requires time to rest the meat etc. Because I came here too early, I opted for their breakfast sandwiches which were also great and delicious. They have several bar seating and two dining tables, but most customers get their food to go. I think this place is worth a visit if one is visiting the DUMBO area. Bread & Spread is tucked away inside of an office building to the side. It was pretty difficult to find. Owners seemed nice enough and I think we were one of the first people there. We didn't have to wait at all so that was nice. Our sandwiches were freshly made and it was easy to tell that they use quality ingredients. We had the chicken sandwich and the turkey sandwich and they were packed up nicely. Just a heads up-- the place is tiny and they have a few stools on which you can sit and eat but there isn't much space. Food was decent and clean but there wasn't anything amazing about the sandwiches in my opinion. I'd go back if I happened to be walking by but I wouldn't go out of my way.. I dropped by as I was exploring the Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO. The inside of the shop is pretty small. They have about 5 tables. The workers were really friendly. I got the prochetta sandwich and it was amazing. The pork belly was juicy and tender. It was a little fatty too, which made the meat melt in my mouth. The topping on the sandwich went really well with the pork. It had arugula, red pepper spread, capers, and provolone cheese. The bread was toasted perfectly because the inside of the bread was still soft. The sandwich is $16 so about $20 with tip. I think it was a little bit overpriced, but the sandwich itself was a 5/5. read more
