On a recent trip to Galena, Illinois with my 3 sister-in-laws and my mother-in-law, we ate at Bread & Vine on Main Street. It was a short walk from our airbnb and offered a diverse menu, various wines/drinks and lovely desserts. We were not disappointed! We all had the tasty and refreshing Pomegranate Mojito to start. Then we ordered the charcuterie board which had a variety of cured meats and some nuts with a nice spicy pepper jam. Two of us ordered the Poke' bowl that was filled with delicious fresh ahi tuna-which I had to share because it was so filling. We also had the goat cheese and pear salad and the goat cheese & honey pizette (pizza). Everything was outstanding! Portions were generous, served fresh and appealing to the eye and taste buds. But the best is yet to come! They have over 15 different desserts to choose from! I had the apple tart-kind of a tall apple pie-that hit the spot. Others had the flourless chocolate cake, lemon merengue tart and the triple chocolate mousse. Nothing but high praise from everyone. In fact, I am returning in the morning to try a breakfast sandwich and get some triple choc mousse to take home. Our server was attentive and prompt (and the only one!) when we arrived at 6:30 to a pretty empty space. They did get busy after 7 with couples sitting down and families coming in to order desserts at the counter service. 5 of us had 4 mojitos, 4 entrees and an appetizer with a total under $150. Such a great vibe & menu well worth the stop in. Me and my friend came back twice in two days. Once for a quick cheese, meat and wine experience in between lunch & dinner...and the next morning for breakfast. Each meal was amazing. Staff is very nice and gave us recommendations for other restaurants. Fruit tart is a MUST TRY. Just a note: they do not have a meat and cheese combo board..which seemed kind of strange. A great place in Galena. What's so good? First off the staff is very friendly, which can make or break a place. Who wants a rude staff? The first time we went we had an order for lunch. The chicken sandwich and steak sandwich were excellent. For breakfast one morning, the breakfast omelette sandwich was tasty. Nice light flaky bread and a great taste overall. Croissants are the best and the Nutella ones for the kids were a hit. Pastries? Any of them. We have a large family so we ordered pretty much everything they had on our four visits. The kids loved the macaroon selection. Tiramisu, crème brûlée, or if you prefer strawberry or raspberry those are there, too! Great cappuccino, too! When we head back we'll stop by again for sure. We didn't get to enjoy the wine part of the cafe but it had a nice selection, along with a full bar. It was busy in November, can't imagine how it is in summer. read more

Excellent menu and wine selection. The indoor and outdoor dining options were both excellent. Our server was very attentive on a very busy night. They were sold out of the sandwiches we wanted to try, so perhaps earlier is better. We were not disappointed with our second choice menu item-the Vegetarian Pizzette. I felt very uncomfortable. I got a croissant, and the person taking my order at the front was wearing long acrylic nails; they went between touching oven handles, touching their hair and face, and using the iPad, to grabbing the croissant with their hands without sanitizing or putting on gloves. The croissants were also sitting out on a table, no glass or other covering, with people leaning over them and flies swarming the pastries. I can't help but wonder how many people have sneezed or coughed right onto those pastries. This was the second time I've been here. The first was a good experience, I ordered online and the food was tasty, but curious about their sanitation standards. Also great little bar with well priced wines that you can't get by the glass at many places such as a nice Albarino. My Mom and I came to stay in Galena for a relaxing 40th birthday celebration. Coming in from downtown Chicago, I had average expectations about food/restaurants, as mostly when I leave town, the food is disappointing. Bread and Vine was an absolute pleasant surprise. The owner is French and clearly knows what he is doing. The menu is on point and even though small, there were so many things I would have tried if we had more time there. They also have a tasteful, thoughtful wine list and cocktail menu. The back of the place is more a cafe/restaurant vibe, the front a pâtisserie (which if you know anything about owning a restaurant, coupling these is a HUGE amount of work). After our second lunch there, we ordered 60$ worth of pastry and macarons to take back to our Airbnb. The macarons were fresh and soft, and the salted caramel tart was the best pastry I have actually had outside of France. 10/10 and so well done. Literally the best place! We went here this week while in Galena and split a sandwich and got tarts to go. The server and all other staff was so nice and the food was amazing. We went back two more times because we could not get enough. we had croissants and turnovers and those were all phenomenal. They have macaroons too. This was a confusing experience, the place itself and ambiance, we almost left. I needed to ask for the sticky table to be wiped down, and we felt the need to wipe the cutlery. When the wine glasses and bottle were brought, after the first taste was poured, I had to stop my husband and ask for a clean glass as there was lipstick on it. The lighting is over bright, music was 70s disco, and cafe tables very small and close together. It gives the vibe of a bakery cafe, and no sign of much wine. HOWEVER, the small plate menu offered some really good options and when the food came it was very good. We had the special pork belly tacos, croquettas, and blue cheese bruschetta. As I said, the food was a surprise, very nice, and the wine list although a bit pricey, the Malbec we had was very good, and a decent value at $54. we won't eat here again this trip as there are other places I want to try, but if we come to Galena again, we certainly will. read more

We are in Galena for the month of August, visiting from Lafayette, Louisiana. The food and pastries at Bread and Vine are excellent. We have had lunch here last Wednesday, and pastries this morning. Always excellent. The décor and build-out is first class, very European. I had the Moroccan sandwich. It was excellent, as was my wife's cheese cake. My only complaint would be the music (Euro-pop dance/club music) is TOO LOUD. Other then that, it was perfect. read more

Great food, terrible service for online orders. Twice I've ordered a combination of pastries and hot food. Both times I arrived on time, had to wait for the hot food to be prepared, and didn't realize till I'd left that I hadn't received everything I'd ordered. The first time was just a 10-min wait, staff was apologetic, and we were missing a mousse. The second time it was a 25-min wait, staff were unresponsive even when I pointed this out, and we were missing a croissant. (I know it's stupid of me not to have checked inside the boxes before I left.) In-person service appears to be good: The couple who came in after me were seated, ordered (after a second trip to the bar to request service), ate and paid while I waited for my fries & flatbread. read more

First night we walked pass this restaurant and I immediately thought of Europe with the beautiful tasty sandwiches in the window. Today after a long and very warm day of touring we were looking for a place for a quick bite and a cool drink. The place was packed at 3:30pm but we scored a table and settled in. Such a cool place, fun vibe and super high energy. We ordered drinks. I had the albarino from Spain (white wine) my husband had 2 fingers of a fantastic bourbon. The line up on the bar list is fantastic! We split a Parma panini which was served warm with crusty French bread, fresh mozzarella, tomato, pesto prosciutto and arugula. Super fresh, oh so tasty. We split 2 macarons. All the while the help was super friendly and the owner was highly engaged with his customers. We loved this place so much we came back after dinner for dessert and wine with our family. The help remember us, the owner came by say hello again the sweets were super delicious. Macarons , salted caramel cream puff, lemon tart, and cheese cake. The atmosphere combined with the super friendly staff and high quality food truly warrants 5 stars.
