The moment we walked in we were yelled at by an incompetent server that said we couldn't move chairs around on a Saturday afternoon. It was quite appalling to have such rude customer service for a place that is so small and cramped to begin with. The idiot server was creating more noise than the was necessary. This is why you go to Galena. To window shop all the pretty looking things including the food and indulge your impulse for beautiful deserts. We got the mascarpone berries eclair, hazelnut lola and the chocolate churros only because they were the best churros I've seen. All of them were good - not great best guess is pastries are best fresh, like in the morning. Not 5 pm The staff is chill, the place looks great, my only nitpick is the late 70's disco music. We. Loved. This. Place. We were in town in August to celebrate our anniversary, and we visited Bread & Vine 3 times! As fate would have it, we were looking for a place to nosh and have some wine on our first night, and Yelp came to the rescue. We were pleased to find such a comfortable, relaxed place in downtown Galena. Not pretentious at all, just delicious well prepared food at a reasonable price. The first night, we had the Greek gyro, the pear and goat cheese salad, the charcuterie board, and the Caesar salad. All was delicious and fresh. We had some good drinks as well. I think I ordered a red wine. The next day, we came back for breakfast - it was also very good. I think we had cocktails, since we were on vacation, day drinking was okay. We had our same server from the night before, David, and he was such a pleasure to converse with. On our last day in town, we stopped in again, this time for coffee and a pastry before hitting the road to go home. Elena, our server, made us delicious cappuccinos and warmed our almond croissants to the perfect temperature. As a native of the area, she also made great recommendations on places to visit and suggested we take the back road to Route 20 to enjoy the scenery. We followed her advice and took Stagecoach Trail to the end and then went north into Wisconsin to enjoy the scenic route all the way back to Illinois. It was a fantastic drive. We just loved our experience and can't wait to go back again and visit Bread and Vine. read more

The food here was good, it's centrally located on the main shopping street, and it has a very cool European vibe. We were able to get a seat at a table at lunch during the week, but it was absolutely packed on the weekend (September). I'm knocking off a star because the seating is very cute but impractical. There were 4 of us around such a small table that we had to strategically position our knees to fit, and I was touching backs with the lady behind me. What a wonderful find in an overly touristy town. With the French cafe feel and the eclectic menu of mouth watering entrees and desserts I recommend to come hungry AND thirsty. I love Bread & Vine, the food the space is beautiful and the staff is very friendly, almost too friendly. Whenever I am in Galena I will stop by. This time, however the prices seemed so high, the daily lunch special that day were the creamy mussels, it did not come with any bread or anything to taste that lovely sauce. I used the empty shells to scoop up the sauce and decided to get a bit of bread, it was $4 for a few slices, not warmed or anything. Was so excited to try the bakery items but left disappointed. Eclair was dry, it was obviously not fresh. Didn't like the lemon tart, it was not what you would expect from the European style bakery. May give it a second chance when in town, if they would have it all freshly baked. read more

This is a favorite spot for us!! We went twice this last visit. It's French bistro inspired, but menu isn't all French. Just solid food prep and flavors. We always looked forward to going to bread and vine when we visit Galena, we loved the baked goods, food and drinks but this past Saturday has since changed our opinion. We arrived and moved from a table near the door to a back table due to the heat and having several children with us. The server in the back was incredibly rude to my stepfather for no reason. He got in his face and asked him how many people were in our party which my step dad was trying to explain the situation since we had to close our previous tab with the original server, who by the way was very understanding and great, he was a young kid that had great customer service. However this other gentleman who was older with black framed glasses had no patience and threw menus down at my step dad and said here's for your s*it ton of kids. He also got in the younger server's face asking what was going on with our group. He didn't come up to our table at all after we sat down until the very end when we were leaving and told my stepdad that he needs to move to stop taking up 2 tables. Which he wasn't he simply moved his chair back so he could leave. I confronted the server and asked what his deal was and addressed the situation with the owner but the guy who was being awful was denying any wrong doing. We left and will never go back and will also advise other friends and family to do the same as we want them to avoid a potential horrendous experience like we had, especially if that server is there. The server needs to held accountable for their service or not be allowed to wait on tables because looking at the other reviews for this location this isn't the first time he has done this. read more

After walking up and down main street we stopped at this cute little place to have a sandwich. we ordered the Cuban Sandwich because of course being Cuban I like to compare how restaurants make our famous sandwiches. The bartender was attentive but not pushy- such a hard balance to achieve. The smoked salmon croissant was so so good. Refreshing and light and just perfect. I got pomegranate mule was good (on the sweet side) but refreshing and lite. The smoked drink with bacon in the title (no bacon actually in drink) was good- super smoky. Bread and Vine is a staple to our Galena experience. We always stop to get some macaroons and some other treats. Unfortunately, we often have to search for a bench outside to eat our treats because the interior is extremely cramped with very limited seating with the number of people that frequent this place. When you're in a tourist area with a HUGE population of guests coming in and out every day, you have to match your seating and your staff to that demand, and sadly, this great place is absolutely sardine city and the staff always seems frazzled and struggling to cope with the demand of people simply asking to place an order or add a drink to go with their cheesecake or pastry. All in all: great food, cute interior, but absolutely not enough seating or staff to meet the demand. Won't stop me from wiggling my way in and getting my lemon cheesecake to go though! read more

New favorite place in town. I scoped this place out before we came here for our annual Galena trip and it did not disappoint. Cafe-like but open late. Everything we have tried was amazing! Our favorites are the chicken sandwich with Russian dressing and the raspberry tart. However, the other items don't disappoint- steak sandwich with brie, prosciutto sandwich, cubanito, blueberry tart, lemon meringue, chocolate mousse, and tiramisu. Came very late on a Saturday as part of a bachelorette party, since I noticed macaroons on the window! Little did we know this amazing establishment was desserts and a bar -the exact thing we wanted! They were SO NICE! We had to do scavenger hunt dates as party of the party and the owner even worked on the music for like 10 minutes straight until he was able to play a certain song we requested. The macaroons were SO good and the drinks were amazing! The wait staff were really nice people, the lady behind the counter was so peppy and happy, the waitress really fast and had a great memory, and the bartender was so nice making everything absolutely perfect even when they ran out of slushies for some of the girls! Every single thing was so beautiful and perfect. The drinks were a work of art and some of the other girls even got dessert with gold on it. Very instgrammable store for all you "phone eats first" friends out there! The sweet owner even gifted the bride "something blue" and sent her on her way with a gift of blueberry macaroons.
