Yesterday my friends and I were Lucky to take a tour with Breakaway tours. As a group of 40 year olds (60 being the new 40), and living in wine country for most of our lives the 7 of us have a lot of experience with wine tasting and tours. My friend, Tracy coordinated this exceptional tour with Jill the owner, and she said Jill was attentive and easy to work with. We had an amazing wine tour from Breakaway Tours to Paso Robles. I stacked the deck against Jill by only giving her only 8 days to put together a plan for 14 people, but she came through with flying colors! I gave her a wish list of wineries, and she could have taken the, "with 8 days left, you get what you get" approach... but she didn't! She got us into an 'off the beaten path' winery that turned out to be the best wine on the trip (and I became a member). She also got us into one of the most popular wineries in the region as well. She really took my preference for Cabs to heart and put together a great tour. Our driver, Charles, was fantastic. He was so accommodating and helpful to us. Breakaway organized an all-day wine tour for 80 people for our Labor Day wedding weekend. I wish I could say that we were easy customers, but we're not. (Just because Jill bent over backwards for us, please don't put her through what I'm about to describe - it's cruel). Jill and I originally planned a very easy itinerary: 40 guests would visit one winery, while 40 guests visited the other. My husband, however, had something different in mind, and decided he wanted to change everything about a month before the VERY VERY BUSY weekend. Sheesh. I was beyond embarrassed going back to Jill and asking to go back to the drawing board, but she was totally gracious, accommodating, and put on her "can do" hat and helped us brainstorm a new itinerary, guilt-free. And, to be fair, my husband and Jill put together a much, much better itinerary. The entire group of 80 first went to Adelaida - which is set on one of the highest hilltops in Paso, where we were greeted with a glass of rose and shuttled up the hill for wine tasting and lunch. The view was beautiful, and the spread was delicious. All the tables were set in the shade and it was totally idealistic. We then broke up into groups of 20, and each group set off to another winery for a more intimate tasting experience. Everything ran so smoothly and was so classy, when it could have been a giant train wreck with so many people and that much alcohol. They are true professionals and also just lovely people to work with. On a separate occasion, we also did the shared group wine tour in SLO, which was a blast. This is our second time doing a wine tour in Paso. Our first one was with another outfit but it was pretty awesome, so our expectations were a bit high. Well, thanks to Breakaway and our tireless guide, Rich, they lived up! We had an awesome time! The arrangements were exactly as it was described, the nice big van was very comfortable, the pick up time was prompt, the winery visits were pre-arranged, and the best part, our guide was attentive and charming and FUN. We had an excellent day with Paul as our guide! This team does a great job of learning your preferences ahead of the tour day so everything is easy. You could specify which varietals you like, whether you prefer a boxed lunch or a winery restaurant reservation, and ask any questions about the region. I also appreciated that gratuity was already included so we didn't have to fuss with that at the end. Paul picked us up in a roomy Cadillac SUV and set us up for a good time with our own music in the car. We went to 3 excellent wineries, most of which still had that small family vineyard feel. Paul took photos for us, kept us on schedule and was there when we needed him, but not overly so...it was the perfect balance. We used breakaway tours this past weekend for a bachelorette weekend and it was great! They were all good with communication and answered all our questions promptly. We opted for the custom itinerary; the wineries chosen were really nice and ended up being perfect for our larger group. It was so much less stressful having a shuttle so we didn't have to worry about a designated driver. Charles was an awesome chauffeur and was really laid back! It is our anniversary this weekend and my wife wanted to do something special while visiting Pismo Beach. So she booked this wine tour and I was skeptical in would a good time. Rich our driver, was absolutely perfect for a tour guide. He was incredibly hospitable, and what we liked was his knowledge of the area and its history. The day of the tour we had Intermitt monsoon like rainstorms Rich went so far as to checking in on is at every winery and when my wife accidentally left her umbrella in the van he gave her his umbrella and went out to get the van closer for us to the entrance of the winery while it was down pouring rain. getting drenched in the process. I was utterly shocked how accommodating he was and so was my wife. Rich went above and beyond what we expected in a tour guide and were very impressed with our tour.
