Perfect Little breakfast spot along the Mississippi. One of us went the traditional route with eggs and sausage patties, and declared them swell. Went there on a lunch date with my mom while shopping down the road. Food tasted excellent! She had the cinnamon French toast, I tried a bite as well tasted great! I had the pancakes, great flavor, but not very much serving size. The pancakes are soo thin, 2 pancakes are like 3/4 of a regular size pancake. If u could get them more thicker (without loosing there wonderful taste) or more than 2, we'd be there a lot, my sons favorite is pancakes. Don't live far, hop and a skip from Colona. Had the best breakfast ever. We travel the country and this food is great. People say you can't ruin breakfast but I'm here to say you can, and you can also really excel. This restaurant is an excellent place to stop for breakfast. It's right off of interstate 80 as you cross into Iowa. It's very convenient if you are traveling, and way better than McDonalds! I went with my in-laws and my wife and we all loved the food. I highly recommend the blueberry pancakes with sausage patties. The hash browns were also really good. The service was excellent. Darius was our server and he did a great job. If you are in LeClaire then you should put this restaurant at the top of your list. read more

We are locals and I have seen the sign for this place, but this is the first time we have stopped. I had the kitchen sink and my husband had The Maxine. Both were served with toast. I thought they were pretty good. It was a busy Sunday morning and they were very busy, but we weren't attended to just fine. I would recommend. My only complaint and why I didn't give 5 stars is I did not like the coffee. It's a little too weak for my tastes. read more

After completing a Photo-Op of the American Pickers in Le Claire, Iowa, we inquired from the locals for a good place to have breakfast. With most recommendations for 'Breakfast at Berries' we drove a short distance to Berries which is situated on the side of the bluff overlooking the Mighty Mississippi. Service with a smile and a feel good atmosphere of enjoying a meal has mostly disappeared from the American scene, however, not at Berries. Staff treatment provided during our visit was not unlike going home to visit family members. If the restaurant setting does not result in a smile of awe and enjoyment, the food definitely will. Of course, me being me, I had to ask the proprietor about how the name 'Berries' originated. Great story, but not for me to tell. Stop by for meal and find out for yourself. Tucked away between a nail salon and a dance studio is the first place in Iowa a westbound traveler will find to get breakfast. It also has the distinction, in my humble opinion, of being the best. Breakfast at Berries has all the curb appeal of your average strip mall. Nothing wrong, just sort of nondescript. You'd miss it if you weren't looking for it, and I'm loathe to admit that I have drove by the place without even recognizing it was there. I'd bet that wardrobe that took those kids to Narnia was equally mundane. The effect is similar. Walking inside, you're met with color and light. Turquoise seems to be a favorite of someone in their establishment. Everything looks like it's been hit with a fresh coat of paint. The windows let in a deceptive amount of light for all the bigger they are. They have a bog standard chalk board with a few choice items of off-the-menu fare, and a large wall-mounted television off to one side. Booths on the outside, tables in the middle. It has the strange feeling of simultaneous newness and familiarity, like seeing your usual hangout spot get a renovation. I was served by a young woman named Tiffany, who had the distinction of being the only person I saw in there when I first walked in at 7:20 on a Sunday morning. She was helpful and brought my coffee almost immediately. The menu is a simple one page affair. It's a breakfast joint, and they don't put on airs. The coffee was good and served in a mug the size of a man's fist. Pretty standard, it's hard to screw up a cup of coffee. By the time I'd studied the menu and made my order, I got a look at a few more members of the Breakfast at Berries crew. The wait staff all appear to be young people that couldn't have been older than 20, reinforcing the feeling of a small town, down home authenticity that people in much larger markets wish they could bottle and sell. A crew of veteran servers, expediters and bussers make a good steak house, but high school and college kids are what make a small town restaurant shine. The place is cheery without being saccharine, and authentic without being obnoxious. "It's a nice place," is what I'm saying. I went all in with my breakfast order: Chicken fried steak, scrambled eggs, hash browns (with cheddar cheese and onion), wheat toast, and I even ordered a biscuit with gravy on the side. What can I say? I play for keeps. A cup of coffee in and my order made its way out to me. The main plate is loaded for bear, and the second plate with my biscuit and gravy is a mean helping as well. It's at this point that I realize I'm going to be paying for this one at the gym tomorrow, but that's tomorrow Me's problem. Today Me craves sausage gravy, and boy did he get it. The toast is crispy, lightly buttered and warm to the touch. The eggs are great. I hear they are supplied locally, and you can taste the difference. Really. The hash browns are perfect from the first to the last bite; crispy outer edges with gooey cheese and soft onions on top. The biscuit is fantastic, and the gravy is everything you'd ever want it to be. Comfort food heaven. But where the meal really shines is in the chicken fried steak. I have a regular breakfast tradition with my grandfather where we meet every Saturday morning and go out for breakfast at one of the area's dining establishments. We've been at this for over 15 years, and we've hit just about every place from national restaurant chain to family owned diner. I'd like to think we're good at the breakfast game. I've had chicken fried steak at just about every place that offers it in the Quad Cities. Without a doubt, the chicken fried steak you get from Breakfast at Berries is the best. The breading is crispy and flakey. The seasoning is superb. The meat is tender and cooked to perfection. The gravy makes it worth its weight in solid gold. You could eat this thing every meal for a week and not get tired of it. It's that good. Here is usually where the high ends. The time when the glory has ended and reality sets in. The time of regret. Paying the bill. For a meal like this, I expected to hear the hull of my bank account creak just slightly due to the increased pressure. It's happened many times in the past. Greatness is usually accompanied by great cost, and deservedly so. It's a business, and I am nothing if not appreciative of small business capitalism. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the folded piece of white receipt paper and saw $13.91 staring back at me. Steak, eggs, biscuit, gravy, hash browns, toast, coffee, enough of it to feed two, and all for under $15. I've paid twice as much for meals half as good. If you're heading on I-80 west toward Des Moines (or on your way East toward Chicago), make your first (or last) stop in Iowa here. Take the exit, turn up Eagle Ridge road, and follow it to Breakfast at Berries. And if you don't order the chicken fried steak, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. read more

Decent! Not great by any means but decent! Coffee is so so. Eggs cooked perfectly! Bacon a tad anemic! Toast not soaked in butter...that's good!! Biscuits and gravy....no!! Nothing but flour!!! Will come back to try pancakes and French toast! Table in booth by window was seriously sticky!!!! I know it was wiped down but still the stickiness makes it feel dirty!
