After having our Outback towed to their shop, George helped us throughout the entire process of diagnosing the problem and communicating with us every step of the way. We were shocked to hear from this team that our recent service visit to our dealership did not address our car issue, and charged us a huge premium to have other aspects of the car fixed. They fixed our problem the same day, but I am not sure about the pricing because I did not compare with other shops. We just accepted their quote and told them to go ahead. I called a week ahead to schedule our time slot, but when my husband dropped off the car, they had no idea we were coming, which is not the best first impression. Also, they had a pretty full lot when he arrived and parked temporarily in a spot, and an employee yelled at him to move not so politely. I normally don't really write reviews but this one bothered me a little bit. I usually like to support mom and pop shops over big corporations even if it costs a little extra but I feel like they were trying to swindle me. Don't get me wrong, everyone I interacted with was very friendly and helpful but the prices weren't mathing. Came in for new brakes, rotors, and calipers and they quoted me roughly $1350 for just the front. I'm no expert but I have a basic understanding of what parts cost and I know they include labor etc. but that seemed really steep. I said no thank you and took my car back. Brought my car to Les Schwab immediately after and they did the front brakes, rotors, and calipers for $650 and they gave me a 3 year warranty. I wasn't going to leave a review but the price difference is insane. I get the economy is rough but I'm not trying to go bankrupt over car repairs. I had an electrical problem with my 2015 Chrysler 300. I had it towed to Bretsinc.com and I was informed that the problem was not the Altenator but the rear electrical fuse box in the trunk needed to be repaired or replaced. The repair would be $4500. I called another shop in Seattle who thought it was probably the altenator. I had it towed to the other shop, they replaced the altenator and it runs. While the car was parked on the street waiting for the car to be towed, someone hit the car. This has caused me to lose revenue because I cannot drive the car on the interstate. read more

Bret has taken care of my families car for more than 30 years. My kids now take their cars to him as do many of my friends. (on my recommendation.) One time he failed to fix my Honda Odyssey (it would not start in my driveway.) So he paid to have a tow truck come to my house and pick it up. When I got it back a few days later in wouldn't start again. He sent two mechanics to my home and fixed it on the spot. It was a loose connection in the fuse box and sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. So the problem was very difficult to find. But those two extra fix attempts were no charge to me. He said, you paid me once to fix your car. I'm going to give it back to you FIXED. He would tell me when a repair was going to be more than the car was worth instead of making a big payday fixing an expensive part. He also checked out any car I was buying for my teenagers and more times than not he said, "Don't buy this car. It's been in a wreck." He always called me by name and I got the best service at a fair price. Now if only I could find a contractor with Bret's work ethic. read more

They have fast turn around (less than a day), convenient after hours drop-off and pick-up and they stand by their high quality work. I've used Bret's for major and minor repairs on several cars over the last 7 or 8 yrs. Their prices are extremely competitive and service is done right -- and in my experience, very promptly. In two instances, Bret and team really over delivered (in a great way)! They've tidied up the office/customer waiting area over the last few years, which is a nice bonus. At least as of spring 2023 parking is still a bit of an issue in that area, which is unfortunate, but not Bret's fault -- just something to contend with. I was rushing to find an appt asap bc my 2017 car was starting to rumble and the check engine light was staying on. I had booked some appts at various places in case their date was the earliest I could get, but Bret was able to fit me in the next day as long as I dropped the car off right at opening. He figured out the issue, called to explain it and the cost. He was able to fix it within the day. The front desk person was super nice along with Bret. Their receipt showed detailed explanation of what the labor was and what needed to be done. This was very helpful! Overall, price was good. Service was excellent. Customer service was excellent. First, I feel its unfair to leave a single star due to them, at one point in the past, being an honest mechanic shop. Where to start? I had used Bretts with success in the past, and needing a lot of work on my 2016 Civic, I decided to go with them first. Initially, I needed to get my AC charged, and they quoted the same price as all the other local shops. Unfortunately, they said my AC Compressor was leaking and needed to be repaired. You do not have the choice in the manufacture of the part, so you are stuck with what they quote you, which in my case was over $1500. One thousand for the part (Although the range of replacement parts were $150-400, not the $1000 in which I was quoted) and $500 for the labor. After wanting a second opinion, feeling something was amiss, I went to another shop (that I wont list - just search around if you find yourself in the same position as I did, or look at my other reviews). Not only was my AC compressor fine, I had a cylinder that was misfiring fixed, as well as the cause for my dash showing every error under the sun (that this shop did not even offer to tell me what the cause might be), my AC 'Actually' repaired (seems in 2016 and up Honda's require special tools in order to fill it, so maybe this shop did not have what was required? Regardless, my compressor did not leak and needed no attention other than to be filled with coolant~ however according to the trustworthy mechanic I took it too, they said this had been drained of every ounce of coolant - a process that can only be done manually) a tune up, spark plugs changed, air filter, brake fluid replaced, as well as new headlight bulbs, and all that work for $200 dollars less than I was quoted by their shop for a SINGLE part that did NOT have an issue at all. This is what is wrong with most mechanics now days. How can anyone be able to tell if the work that was paid for was even done, or if what they say was actually the cause of it anyway? Without anything fixed, I walked away with a $155 'assessment' bill. A bill that did not offer any truth as to what was wrong with my car. I understand paying for a shops time in order to diagnose, but I feel I did not pay for this - instead, since they could not get me for what they wanted, they had to at least make something off of me, but it was not any type of assessment, what I paid for was a piece of paper telling me what was NOT wrong with my car. They have done great work in the past, and in order to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they now hire unskilled, or perhaps unqualified mechanics. I hope this is the case, and not a shop going out of their way to lie to you in order to drain you for every drop they can. If you find yourself reading this review, all I can suggest, is take any expencive repair bill to another shop for a second opinion, and to be cautious with what they tell you. You may find yourself very happy that you were only stung for a $155 assemnet bill, instead of make-believe problems. read more

Its rare that people write a 5 star review, let alone for a mechanic. But Bret ( Or who ever it was) actually talked me out of a needless and expensive repair. What kind of mechanic does that? An honest one. Bret's does honest work! Story time: My Jeep started throwing codes with a check engine light and so I started looking things up online. I used to do a small amount of my own auto repair and figured I might be able to handle something as simple as what the codes said the check engine light meant; Bad O2 Sensor, post Catalytic Converter, Bank 1. After crawling around and finding the Sensor, I decided to look up some repair advice in Jeep forums and on youtube, where I got some confidence and advice that I should replace *all 4 of the O2 Sensors* rather than just the *one*. That they go bad after a set number of *miles. So there I was, ready to go about it by picking up 4 cheap O2 Sensors and setting to work. But, after crawling around under my Jeep in my Apartment lot and getting talked to by the complex, I could see that #1 the Sensor was going to be a huge pain to get out and replace, and #2, My complex doesn't want to me doing auto repair in the lot. So I looked online for a mechanic and chose Bret's repair due to some other positive reviews, and booked my repair. After seamlessly dropping off my Jeep I got a call that they checked for Vacuum leaks and other such things, and yep its just the one bad 02 sensor, which they'll bill me reasonably for. But, here's where I mess up and Bret's shows its honesty. I tell the guy on the phone I think I should replace all the O2 Sensors, since the others will go bad soon. And they tell me they will if I want them too but, there is no need to do it like that. That there is no set time or mileage for an O2 sensor, some last the life of a car, others don't. Just save the money and don't replace a good part with a new part. So, I'm here now with my Jeep home and running great and I'm thinking, they could have billed me for the other parts which they probably make a small amount of mark up on since they have to stock them or order them themselves, and they could have billed me for another hour or two... but they talked me out of spending my hard earned cash just to be honest with me. They did this against their own financial incentives. And I got my Jeep back same day which is nice too! So thanks Bret's!! read more

I came here a long time ago when I was immature and didn't know a whole lot about cars. The mechanics helped resolve a problem with a fuse relay on my older accord. I was hit by sticker shock and threw a fit. The owner came out and was very patient with me even though I was in the wrong. A few months later, my 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in broke down. I had it towed to Magic Toyota services department in Edmonds because I have the prepaid Maintenance service with Toyota . After 2 weeks, Magic Toyota could not figure out what's wrong with it. I had my Prius towed to a friend's auto repair shop. Prius sat in the lot for 2 weeks and they were not able to figure out even though I was told that the owner called Toyota hotline for consultation. Out of desperation, I had it towed to Bret's. I know that Bret and his team spent by far WAY MORE hours/time that he quoted me for (because the previous teams unplugged some of the wires and caps, but did not put them back). I'm new to the Mountlake Terrace/Edmonds/Lynnwood area and just experienced my first cracked radiator in my '04 Subaru Outback. I was fortunate my regular oil change guys noticed it before any overheating or excessive leaking occurred. I went around getting estimates in the area and surprisingly Bret's offered the lowest considering the use of all OEM parts..as well as having plenty of satisfactory reviews. I dropped my car off first thing at 8AM when they opened and received a text at 1:40PM saying they were finished. The radiator appears to look good and the car even feels a little smoother on the road. So far so good, however, my only disappointment was the customer service. Both Bret and the girl up front were pretty unsociable and when I politely asked to be shown/given a brief overview of the work done they just looked at me with blank expressions. Bret even responded by saying "Well we just put in a new radiator." He eventually came out, popped the hood and briefly went over what was done and even pointed out a couple little things he noticed but nothing serious to worry about.
