Definitely a 5 star, elite level brewery in a surprising location. Drive along Rt. 29 through the historic Delaware River Towns, and you'll find Odd Bird blending in with its active gas station neighbor (all one building) in tiny Stockton, NJ. I've been to a lot of breweries in NJ, and I've come to recognize certain traits that belong to top tier breweries: 1. They don't offer flights. I've read that serious brewers don't like offering flights as it is difficult to fully appreciate a beer when poured in 4 ounces and paired with several other beers at once. 2. No flavored seltzers. They're trying to make the best beer possible and not just appeal to everyone. 3. They collab with other top tier breweries. They currently have a cask ale on tap that they collab with Tonewood and Alternate Ending which are both amazing breweries in their own right. My girlfriend and I made the trip on a Saturday in March. We arrived around 2, and by 3 the place was packed. The taplist consists of ten beers that are all extremely varied and excellently made. The requisite pale ale and IPA are on offer, of course, but you'll also find a Japanese rice lager, a Polish-style oak smoked lager, a grisette saison, an ale brewed with red wine grapes, a mild ale on nitro, and the aforementioned cask ale with a hand pulled beer engine originally from a 1970's pub in the UK. Finding any one of these fringe styles of beer at a brewery would be cause for the average beer nerd to rejoice, but all of them under one roof?! And all of them excellent and in a beautifully decorated, repurposed building with tons of natural light plus outdoor beer garden on the side and incredibly friendly and cheerful staff?! Pretty amazing. We live over an hour away but definitely hope to come back sometime to see what else they come up with.

They have ton's of supplies and are pretty…read moreknowledgeable if you need to ask them a no brainer about brewing, or pick their brains on some crazy concoction you want to brew. They also have bottles fairly cheap, when you find yourself inept at drinking enough to keep your bottle supplies high enough for bottling days, as well a variety of special bottles if you want to do a special brew such as one I did last Christmas for presents. If you don't have the time money or know how to invites in your own brewing equipment, you can just brew there! Most of the beers, btw, aren't so pricey, but we're fans of dark, rich, knock you on your butt beers. As a bonus, we found out that if we let the second fermentation go for 2 months, it will be smoother. And in 2 months I'll be able to drink again--YEAH! Perfect timing! All of the raw ingredients and supplies are sold here too, from buckets and bottles to bins of hops for your own special blend. Artisan Home Brew is a business that has been here for quite some time, which says something in the era of home brew becoming popular, then fading from popularity. Lots of places sprung up during that time, then closed as demand dropped. That they have survived shows their dedication to the art of home brewing and their understanding of who their customer is and what they're looking for. This is not a fancy place, nor is it a place for people to stop and pick up a six pack. They don't sell beer, just all the ingredients and supplies, along with some supplies for wine making. They have some beginner supplies, kits and such, though this is a small part of their inventory. It's an old space with clean swept wooden floors and exposed beam ceilings, part of which have coasters from various craft breweries stapled. Shelves are unadorned, lined with various items, bins of different grains line one wall. The staff are quite knowledgable and friendly, with a club-like atmosphere where discussing the craft is as important, if not more important, then selling the product. Lion joined in on the banter, then made his purchase with a firm handshake and a thanks from both. I have a feeling this is going to become a place he visits often.

I bought 25 Sparkling wine bottles (they sell them in packs of 5 for their kits). Turns out these…read morebottles weigh 527gr and are much lighter and thinner than real Champagne bottles that are more like 800-900gr (see photo). Consequently, I don't trust that they can withstand the 6+ bar pressure that can develop in the bottle when fermenting wine in the bottle (methode Champenoise). I would think some may explode so do your homework and if you proceed with these bottles, wear eye protection and gloves. I tried to get the weight of the bottles from customer service, prior to ordering, but I did not succeed. They just assured me that they were suited for making sparkling wine, so no I am stuck with 25 bottles that I cannot use, which is why the one star review.
