I am on a mission to find the best coffee shops in Richmond, and this was on my list! First, I almost don't want to encourage people to come because street parking was so easy (no small feat in the city) and when I walked in, there were a couple groups of people, but plenty of seating left! Brewer's has such a great atmosphere when you walk in, people were friendly, and they had a great menu! I got a hot chocolate because it was freezing and a plain bagel for breakfast. Everything was ready quickly. The wifi password is on a chalkboard by the register, and it was a nice environment to get some work done in. Wifi speed was fast, which was important to me as I was working online. I will definitely be visiting this coffee shop again, there is still food I want to try, and I have a feeling I will be doing a decent amount of work from there in the future! read more

So many 5-star reviews made me want to check this place out, but unfortunately, Brewer's Cafe just didn't meet my expectations. I came here looking for a late lunch and coffee. I ended up getting the Mediterranean vegetarian wrap and an iced vanilla latte. The wrap was pretty hearty with the greens, but it didn't have much flavor. It could have used some interesting sauce. The iced vanilla latte was too milky for my liking and lacked the vanilla flavor. So, overall, the meal was bland and boring. I was hoping for the wrap to be more flavorful because Richmond has so many great vegetarian/vegan spots. When I had first walked in, the space was crowded with tables. A few of them were taken with people working on their laptops. After I ordered my take-away meal, it was tough to find a place to stand, because the space was so overrun with tables, people in line, and other things. Finally, and this was the worst part, there was no AC. It was so hot in there, that I almost felt like I'd rather have waited outside in the 90 degree weather. It was unfortunate. In writing this review, I read the background of the owner, AJ, and the business. I find it interesting and heartwarming that AJ used to buy and trade stocks and found that opening this cafe would better meet his passions and work for his family. If I find myself in the area again, I would not mind checking it out again, but I will order something else for sure. It appears that others stick to the hot coffee drinks. Plus, this place does have some potential, as there are numerous, diverse drink options. Bottom line: I was not impressed with my first visit here given the number of 5-star reviews. The veggie wrap could use some work, the iced latte needs more flavor, and the place needs to have AC working at all times (or at least more fans). read more

I really hate to put a bad review because most of the time when I order here the coffee is good. But this was my first time ordering food and I was highly disappointed. This is my first time visiting Virginia & i have to say brewers has probably been my favorite cafe so far ! I wasn't sure what to get so i let one of the employees choose my meal for me & it was so delicious!! Their Chai Latte was incredible- the perfect amount of spice & sweetness . 11/10 recommend ! The inside of the cafe has extraordinary art pieces and a great trendy menu. I definitely plan on going back at least one more time before my trip comes to an end. read more

I dropped my husband off here for a meeting and I came in and got a chai tea to go. I usually stick with Starbucks however today I so wish Brewers was closer to me, or my boys' school. I'm out in Glen Allen but will happily make the drive for this amazing treat. Plus wonderfully friendly and pleasant staff. I really prefer to support local so Starbucks has always been easy, but when in the area, or when I have the extra 20 minutes to drive I'll definitely be a "regular" Highly recommend this great little spot. read more

Very interesting place. The cafe seemed presentable exterior wise, as well as interior for the most part. BUT, for me it was just a weird vibe. Like most shops im used to, they have a cozy environment..here I just didnt feel that. I thought the coffee was good and breakfest sandwich was fine. My ladies bagel was soggy because the serving plate was still wet from were it washed. The mugs didnt seem very clean, simply because they still had stain rings from other uses. Really, just a few odds and ends like the leaf vacuum in the front entry way. There was some kid running around throwing cheese in a box and they had a new staff member that didnt really seem to be above par. The short, fairly skinny gentleman working mainly the machinery was quite friedly. He seemed to know what he was doing. Other then that it wasnt an awful experience, just really wasnt for me! I can boast about their smooth plain black coffee or rich mocha or the generously heavy-handed pour in their spiked coffee options (FYI, highly recommended since nowhere else in the city has the variety of coffee-cocktails like they do), but the community feel is the best part. All artwork features African American and lifts black beauty, power, and creation, which you don't see enough of in Richmond even though we have such a large black population. Not a quiet place to do long hours of intense work which is a downside (and their golden milk latte is a bit too intense), but for sure a place to pass through with friends and enjoy their outdoor seating or a stool by the big corner window. This is such the cutest cafe on the inside and out. It's located in Manchester, which is great! Manchester was in need of a cozy cafe such as Brewer's. I had the Bainbridge breakfast croissant (named after a nearby street) and it was sooooo good. I also had a delicious fluffy donut and washed it down with some mango tea. Supported this establishment a few times but today was such a disappointment. I ordered the avocado toast and it's like they used one half of the avocado to spread on two pieces of dry stale toast. Just the worst! I'm a fan of avocado toast and never experienced such a thing. I would have preferred them to say they didn't have enough avocado on hand to make the toast then to bring out what they made. And if that's not the case to stop making avocado toast all together if they aren't going to do it right. read more

Nice little cafe in the revitalizing area of Manchester. The location is ok. The food is ok. If you're nearby, then eat here. If not, then don't go out of your way to get to it. The interior is small and VERY tight. Not my definition of cozy. People coming in the door were literally standing right over me while I was dining in and as they waited for their to-go orders. Others stood around chatting with patrons, making for a very claustrophobic feel. There is an outdoor patio section with limited seating as well. Honestly, I think they are on the right track service-wise. However, if their goal is a neighborhood hot spot where people can come and chill, they should revisit the interior layout. Perhaps hire an interior designer to help optimize the small space that they have. Service: Quick, friendly, great menu with lots of hot/cold sandwich options. In a city (or culture for that matter) where coffee shops have been setting themselves up to be known more as purveyors than neighborhood staples and friends, Brewer's Cafe stands out amongst the smorgasbord of more happening, hipster options throughout the rest of my hometown. Moving to Manchester three weeks ago, I found myself all too enthused for the prospect of riding my bike each day towards the abundance of shops closer to the Flood Wall and the heart of the creative district of this neighborhood. I was quickly met with the stark realization that I am not physically prepared for the cold winter winds whipping in my face as I rode along Bainbridge. Let me make this very clear - I am NOT settling when I come to Brewer's Cafe. Of course I would love to have matcha tea available as an option, but their vibrant display of art ranging from my favorite rappers to Hamilton's Manuel-Miranda to a large cultural figure on the back wall and energetic green color scheme offers just as many health benefits. Today, I ate breakfast before I began my work day as a freelancer for the next month and didn't find myself hungry, but viewing others' plates leaves no doubt in my mind that this is the complete coffee shop experience that I have been looking for; to not feel out of place or uncomfortable when I occupy a table at one of Richmond's many cafes, and to be able to be in my own neighborhood.
