I finally got to go into BriarPatch Food Co-op! It's been at this location for so long and I was not disappointed! I usually come here to pick up the peanut butter cookies they make fresh everyday from their bakery. However, I tried to go up the aisles to see if I could find something I couldn't find anywhere else. All their items are unique from the beer and ciders they carry down to the frozen foods. They source local organic and sustainable foods whenever they can. "Since 1976 they've been building a sustainable and equitable food system that supports healthy people, animals and the environment. When you spend your dollars at The Patch, you contribute to a thriving local economy and a kinder, more resilient world" ~From their web page They also have a fresh food and a hot food self serve section. I haven't tried it, but everything looks delicious! I did get to try a smoothie and those are super healthy and delicious as well. When I got up to check out, the employees were so wonderful and told me about their program you can partake in. I was definite interested, so she gave me a card with some info on it.... Briarpatch has become my go-to for groceries and specific items while I'm In the area. This particular store is conveniently located right off the main drag on your way to Grass Valley from Sacramento area. Pro's: -It is always clean. -Bathrooms are private and kept tidy -Staff is friendly and polite -If you're low tox or just conscious about what you put in your body, they have lots of options -Large organic produce department - Sometimes you can get great deals from sales Cons: - Prices seem to go up on my staple items too regularly. Nearly every visit on some items. - Yes, you will pay more for many items - smaller than the GV location, so less options on some items (also less busy and roomier aisles) Overall, we love BriarPatch, and hope one opens up closer to us someday. We love our Auburn Briar Patch. I'm so happy they expanded into a second location, because this is now our preferred Briar Patch. The layout of the store is fantastic. Their meat section and their frozen section also seem bigger than the other Briar Patch, and often have a variety of great options that you can't otherwise find in the area. Briar Patch also has the best produce I've possibly ever had, and the coolest thing is that a lot of it is local. Sometimes I wish we could clone this one, fantastic employees and all, and put it in Nevada County! read more

Service and quality of the food is beyond any other store. Small but mighty! And their sandwiches are really delicious as is the salad bar.

I went there with my wife to sample their veggie smoked cheddar. It was an experiment born of curiosity. Took a chance on something new and sadly wasn't impressed. However, the store had a lot of different and new interesting products. So to each his own. Just because it wasn't for us, doesn't mean it could be right for you. Continues to underwhelm in the food department which is too bad because I really want to like it. I tried a chicken curry soup a couple days ago. I know a watered down mess when I taste one... wow. Terrible. Did y'all have chicken coconut curry the day before that didn't sell and you just turned it into soup? That's what it tasted like. Terrible that I bought two medium bowls. A word about the fish. I bought $40 worth of salmon a couple months ago and cooked it the next day. It was bad! They sold me bad fish. Never again. Sorry but overated over priced food . $8.99 FOR asparagus , chicken curry salad taste of nothing and big chuncks of drum stick chicken meat that was tuff. Desert cake solid. Salmon $35 two small pieces the cat enjoyed it. Going to stick with Nugget even if it,s a bit further to drive .Least they do not pretend to be something they are not and far far better food . read more

The stars are for the food. The best apples you could get without going to the farmers market. Lots of organic and healthy food options! The hot food bar is great too. Sandwiches lack flavor though. The employees are why I deducted stars. Haven't had pleasant experiences with them so we try not to engage. Last time I went with my toddler. My toddler chose several different apples to try throughout the week. We put them in one bag. As I was checking out, we got lectured that it's easier for the cashier if we didn't put them in a bag. I get why it's easier from them, but I don't go through the store thinking what's easiest for the cashier. Totally ruined our experience choosing healthy foods! That's the latest experience... don't feel the need to detail more... Check out the store, see what it's about. Don't expect anything amazing though. read more

The Grass Vally co-op is great! Great vibe, great selections, and overall love going there to shop. 5 stars! The Auburn location--well, just not the same. Big store with fewer options. Every time I enter, I leave without the things I need. I am not entirely sure what the draw will be for folks to enter Briar Patch in Auburn? There are other markets with organic items and everything you need. I think Trader Joe's would be a better addition to this area. Then folks don't have to drive down to Rocklin. read more

As I was in line just a few minutes ago to pay for my groceries another cashier came up and took a guest named Michelle and called her by name and opened a new register for her after I was in line first. If that's the way they do business and pick and choose what customers they want to ring up first when I was next in line I guess that's a business I don't need to shop at. This was only my second time in the store. I asked the cashier if there was a reason why that the other cashier took this gas name Michelle instead of me when I was next and she said she had no idea why maybe because my two items were already on the conveyor belt but my two items were not on the conveyor belt they were in my hand. This left a nasty taste in my mouth. Come on Briar Patch do better read more

There is no professional appeared as you'd see in Trader Joe's or Whole Foods I've been here serval times and I can't think of a single time anyone was helpful. Cashiers talk amongst each other when cashing out customers. No eye contact with customers and no interest in interacting with customers No issues with food Produce are fresh. Options of grass fed and grass finished meat Maybe the management can use additional training. Would be nice to see people who work there look presentable and clean. Whole Foods store focuses on customers. Maybe visit their store and observe how their cashiers treat their customers. Anyways- the store is a great addition to the area- I don't have to drive to Whole Foods to grab last minute items when my kids have activities on this side of town. read more

Excellent Co-op with a new location closer to my home. I am beyond thrilled!!! Today was the Grand Opening. I arrived 15 minutes early to a line all of the way around the store. Wowza!! And they did not disappoint! Everyone attending is full of smiles and laughter. The employees are polite, friendly and extremely helpful. Within minutes of my entering, an employee helped me find the perfect shampoo for my hair type. Not always easy, as I am picky about ingredients and sourcing. Then, at the register, Bryan was delightfully greeting everyone while he quickly and efficiently ran the register. The line was long, yet moved darn fast. I regret forgetting his courtesy clerks name... however, she bagged my groceries perfectly in 2 (gifted to me by Briar Patch) reusable bags. Then, on my way out, I was gifted a bag full of free goodies and samples. Yayyy! Score! A new fabulous place to shop, where I can support the best (right for me) products and local produce. I'm actually being generous with three stars. I went to their soup and salad bar the other day, and I couldn't believe how expensive their soup was. I paid $4.49 for what seemed to be a 6 oz cup of mushroom soup. After eating it, along with a little packet of oyster crackers, it barely whetted my appetite. Their salad bar was "meh." There was no tempeh or tofu, and their shredded carrot looked unappetizing. I was very disappointed and decided to go to the Grass Valley location today and was just as disappointed; because they also did away with their tempeh and tofu, as well as so many other options -- like their quesadillas and buckwheat-mushroom soup; etc. I decided to try some rice and mixed vegetables from their hot food bar and was shocked to see all of the oil that oozed from it after heating it up in the microwave at home. ln addition, their baked goods (pastries) were so overpriced. In short, BriarPatch has regressed -- and I will not be going back. read more

Was excited to have BriarPatch open in Auburn to save a trip up the hill to Grass Valley. The store seemed to take forever to open. When it finally did, was very disappointed that they didn't offer what I went there specifically for - bulk product refills. They had some but not what the GV store offers. Also since it's new it didn't have the same vibe as GV. Did not enjoy my shopping trip. Guess it's back to the drawing board going to the GV store. May revisit after they get settled in after a while. read more

This is like an organic and natural grocery super-store! Been shopping at Grass Valley location and not to have an even larger one closer to home is a dream! I have been patient with the Auburn location because I have loved the GV store for many years. But now I have run out of patience. Deli / smoothie counter staff needs better customer service skills. They are sometimes rude and often sit and talk to each other instead of focusing on what they need to do. I have seen people leave in frustration including myself. The manager is often seen bending over the counter at the deli and at an empty cashier counter distracting staff and not ensuring good service. The cashier staff is great. Fix your deli area please. read more

This store reminds me of a slightly watered-down Whole Foods. There's nothing wrong with it but it's light on many things and seemed to have a smaller selection of items. I will say that the pumpkin pie at the front sample station was really good and they did have some nice things in that section of the store. I'm not sure it's worth it to go here for things that aren't specialty items though as it's pricey here. Parking was pretty easy though. read more

I felt the need to write this review due to my first and last experience in the store. It was nice to see the old Kmart vacated space populated again but I wished it had been with a Trader Joes or Sprouts. Briar Patch is a store that focuses on feelings and aims to attract a specific shopper. From staff to product selection. Sadly, my list does not have any complements to balance the negatives or give me hope of improvements. 1) The store smells. As soon as you enter the door, you are hit with a chemical smell. This was not a onetime deal as others who have visited, had the same experience months apart. I walked around to try and isolate the source but it was all over the store. I was finally able to "interrupt" a store clerk or manager and ask what the smell is. His reply was "Oh, it's probably the deli burning food again" It happens all the time". There was no apology, no attempt to locate the source, just a dead with it attitude. 2) On the topic of burnt food, I know the store has set of the fire alarms multiple times causing the adjacent stores to had to be evacuated until the fire department clear the incident. A great inconvenience to staff and customers in the other stores. 3) Although I have not experienced the food being cooked or prepared, I have heard from others it is not that great, takes a long time, etc. The organization and timing of dishes are apparently a mess. 4) The staff's appearance certainly goes along with the vibe they are trying to portray and the people they are trying to attract. For me, I thought they all looked like they just rolled out of bed; put yesterdays clothing on, skipped a shower and went to work. I wondered around the store and not one time was I asked if I needed help. One particular staff member stood near the checkouts looking over her glasses like an old school teacher. No smile or acknowledgement for customers, just a grumpy look. 5) Product cost is high. I would pay those process and Whole Foods but not here. read more

I love the deli. The poke bowl is generous on the salmon and absolutely phenomenal, and the chipotle chicken burrito is the bomb and beats the chain restaurant's version hands down. This market is a great addition to the local shopping scene, a beautiful store, clean, well-lighted with an amazing selection of products. An excellent produce section with a huge variety of organic vegetables and fruits. A bulk food section with a wide array of products including grains, cereals, nuts and a spice section which is not to be missed. Meats and seafood are on hand in the display case or under refrigeration in the self-service cases. Exotic cheeses, cured meats, olives, appetizers, crackers are plentiful. A great salad bar is available but the offerings in the hot food side always appear dried and the variety isn't too inspiring. Freshly prepared sammos, burritos and sushi are at hand but the sushi is a little too expensive for regular consumption. Quite a few breads and baked goods are in stock but the baguettes are hit and miss: one day they feel fresh and other days they seem stale. A large selection of beers and wines are offered. The dry goods is amply stocked with both standard and boutique items. Finally, the staff is really helpful and add to the pleasantness of the visit. We ordered an avocado toast with egg, and this is what they gave us. The toast wasn't even toasted. The bacon was cold and who gives hard boiled eggs on toast. Very upsetting seeing that I always go to briar patch, but this new location is different than the Briarpatch in grass Valley. read more
