I just happened to come across The Baker and the Cakemaker and, of course, I had to stop in and see what they had! There were plenty of goodies to choose from like pastries, croissants, artisanal breads, cake slices, brioche bread with fruit, cinnamon rolls and several other products for sale. Their cake of the week was a mocha cake! It has layers of chocolate cake with an Expresso milk soak, frosted with expresso buttercream frosting with a chocolate ganache drip, topped with cocoa nuts... WOW!!! The artisanal breads are located on the side of the shop when you walk up towards the case. They have many flavors like roasted sourdough, pumpkin seed, kalamata olive, rosemary & lemon, and more! All breads are preservative free and made with organic flour. I decided to try the flourless brownie along with a ham and cheese croissant. I wanted something sweet and something savory. The flourless brownie was definitely my favorite of the two. It was rich, chocolatey, and had that creamy texture that you want from a good flourless brownie. It was a good size, too! The ham and cheese croissant itself was good and had a nice flaky texture, but I really wish there had been more ham and cheese inside. It felt a little light on the filling, especially compared to the size of the croissant. I absolutely enjoyed the flavor and flakey texture. It was a perfect crossiant, minus the ham and cheese part. The inside is cute but be prepared to get cozy with only a small amount of space to sit. Thankfully, they also have some outdoor seating if you want to hang out and enjoy your pastry there. I didn't get a picture of indoor or outdoor seating because they were a good amount of people enjoying their dining experience. I guess they know where the goodies are! Here! Overall, I liked discovering this little spot. Between the pastries, croissants, artisanal breads, and other goodies for sale, there was plenty to look at and definitely a few things I want to come back and try... and I'd for sure grab another one of those flourless brownies! read more

I was excited to try this place because it had been recommended to me by some friends about their brown butter latte. I got it with whole milk and it wasn't too bad. I'd say mine was a little milky and that's mostly the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars because of the latte. It also had like a sort of almost sour taste- not sure if it was supposed to taste like that. The cinnamon roll I got was super good tho, I'd definitely recommend! I learned about this bakery gem at the 2025 Terra Madre Americas event, where I got to sample various breads from their vendor booth. It was no wonder why their meyer lemon rosemary sourdough loaf was flying and selling like crazy! I'm so glad I got a loaf to enjoy at home. It is delicious all on its own or dipped in olive oil! The staff is friendly and high energy, and they answered all of my questions, which is important for me since I have stomach sensitivities to many bread ingredients out there. They use simple, healthy ingredients for the win! The only down side is they are a bit far away from where I live, so next time I make a trip to Auburn, I must stop by to buy another loaf and try their other products! read more

First visit, quite liked it. Quite bust midweek late lunch but impressed with service, quality and the food itself. I got the Thai Rice salad with gf cornbread (salty and yummy) -- generous portions. Salad was delicious but I wished it had more lettuce and less rice. My friend had avocado toast with egg and she was happy with it. Hopping busy but we could hear ourselves talk at indoor table so it was fine. Love how big their loaf slices are! We decided to stop here on the way up to Tahoe to grab breakfast and lunch to bring to the mountain. The gentleman, Ken, who runs the shop with his son, was super friendly and accommodating to my special requests. My husband ordered the breakfast sandwich...it was super tasty with onions caramelized to perfection. We both ordered a turkey sandwich to go...the bread was so fresh and delicious and made with quality ingredients and I might add that they were not stingy with the amount of avocado they loaded on the sandwich! We also bought a loaf of Meyer lemon Rosemary sourdough to go, which I highly recommended. Amazing place to eat, always packed. I get the avocado toast each time and it's delicious. A little smaller than the usual bread they use but still good. The latte was decent and well brewed. The egg nog cake isn't something I usually try but it was DELICIOUS. Cinnamon and cake made a baby with egg nog. Definitely coming back here again a thousand times over. The staff is so nice! My lavender latte was tasty. I am just so confused by the food. Brown butter pumpkin muffin had a very nice texture but it was so bland. Almond croissant was doughy/dry and not pastry flaky. The filling was~ watery and thin. I also tried the toast with avocado, bacon, potatoes cheese, pickled red onion and greens.. the potatoes were still crunchy and undercooked. I understand items with cooking times can be difficult during the rush, might want to skip that part. I ordered everything to go as it was busy, and on the way out I noticed an empty table being "saved" by some Stanley cups and a pair of sunglasses. Do better patrons, a small business shouldn't have to tell you "please order before selecting a table". I could have sat down, finished my snack and left before you had even made it to the counter to order as the line was to the door. This was my first time at the Baker and the Cake Maker. My grandpa recommended I try the brown butter latte, and it did not disappoint. It was perfectly smooth and not too sweet. What takes the cake though, was the sweet fruit croissant. The crisp, airy freshness of the croissant paired with perfect balance of tartness from the lemon and cream cheese filling with the sweetness of the fruit and the brown sugar was perfection. Croissants are very bready (vs flaky crusty), and bread doesn't have the chewy light crumb I like. - Cinnamon Roll: probably the best item. But very sweet. - chocolate croissant: I liked how chocolatey and gooey this was but did not like the croissant which was like bread in the shape of a croissant - avocado toast: Very aesthetic. too many seeds and wasn't a fan of the pickled vegetables on top. Ordered with soft boiled egg which was done well but expensive (~$3) - breakfast sandwich: Was ok. After making a random and unexpected drive to Auburn (which is the county seat of Placer County), I decided to check out one of their most well-known bakeries/coffeeshops, "The Baker and the Cakemaker". Located directly on Lincoln Way and tucked in between of High St. and State Highway 49 in the heart of downtown Auburn, this place has been serving up delicious baked goods and coffee beverages dating back to 2019. Hours of operation are Tue-Fri from 6am-4pm, Sat from 7am-4pm, and closed Sun/Mon. I came here during the afternoon of Saturday 9/21/2024 at around 2:30pm as I was on the hunt for an iced coffee drink with a muffin. Since this was well after the morning rush, it wasn't that busy at all. As far as the interior layout/setup, everything is laid out very well complete with ample seating and a cozy atmosphere. They offer several fresh loaves of bread as well as many of the popular fresh baked goods; muffins, croissants, cakes, and cookies. They even offer popular breakfast/lunch options including toasts, sandwiches, and salads. I ended up ordering one of their gluten-free blueberry muffins complete with an iced vanilla latte. Total price for everything was around $8 + tax. I then proceeded to their outdoor patio area and all I have to say is that this is one of the more peaceful/tranquil places to relax and chill no matter what time of day it is. The muffin was absolutely delicious as you wouldn't have the slightest hint that it was gluten-free. The latte was also above average but just a little too watered-down as I wasn't able to taste a lot of the espresso. No big deal as it was still served in a large glass cup. All in all, "The Baker and the Cakemaker" is one of the better family owned-and-operated businesses in Auburn as it offers more of that relaxed vibe that you don't find in nearby Roseville or Rocklin. With competitive prices, respectable hours, above average customer service, and delicious fresh food, I am giving them four stars. read more

We have been day-one supporters of this darling bakery, but unfortunately since it's changed hands they have struggled to work out the kinks to the point where it's no longer acceptable. This morning's example was when we got there before the Saturday rush and spent 30 minutes buying a cinnamon roll. They forgot it in the warmer until I asked about it and then gave it to us burnt. When I brought it (untouched) back to the counter I had to wait in the now long line all over again since there was no one else out on the floor. I asked for one cold just to get out of there, and there was no acknowledgement of the issue. Just a blank stare and then I was handed a new one. I had to ask 3 times for forks to find that they were apparently all being washed. When we left other tables around us were also asking where parts of their orders were. This has sadly been our experience multiple times in the past year or so. We've supported this neighborhood establishment for years, but there are plenty of other local spots with food that's at least as good as theirs and you don't have to deal with the constant mistakes. read more

A friend of my son recommended to come here for brunch/lunch after our hike at Clementine Trail. It's a bouquet mom and pop bakery with sandwiches, cakes and pastries. We got here at around noon time on Saturday and the place was almost full. There are 6-7 small tables inside and 3-4 tables outside. The hard working staff clear the tables quickly so we were able to get a table pretty quickly. It's order at the counter, pay and find your table type of service. I was salivating while waiting on line admiring the pastries and cookies. We had to pick-up one of each cookies to try. I mean they all look so good and reasonably priced ($2 each). My favorite is the Bakers Cookies which had caramel and nuts? I like the chewy texture. I also really like the Lavenderdoodle - it's like a snickerdoodle cookie but with lavender. It was different (in a good way) and fragrantly delicious. We also got a slice of the cake of the week - White chocolate match cherry. It was a bit too sweet for me but it was moist and creamy. We also got breakfast sandwiches. The Sunrise Sandi with baked egg, bacon, caramelized onion, avocado, cheddar cheese and greens on sourdough bread definitely hit the spot after a 5 mile hike. It was one of the BEST breakfast sandwich that I can remember. It had everything that I love. The Pastrami Sandwich was great too. I have a feeling that all the sandwiches are great here. And I love the pickles that came with the sandwiches. Awesome place! I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Auburn area. read more

Would definitely return. We stumbled upon this place on our way to Tahoe and we are definitely glad we did! Tried the potato ball- wish this would've been warmed up but it was pretty hefty and solid. I got the turkey pesto sandwich- loved the sunflower seeds in the pesto since it gave the sandwich crunch. The sourdough bread was also very fresh and not too sour like some sourdough tends to be. My bf had the turkey bacon sandwich- also really enjoyed. Now the star of the show- the lemon poppy seed cake so good. Not too sweet, thick slice, moist. It was bf enough to share and it stayed fresh until the next day too! Wish they would've had a cake that didn't include peanut butter- def wanted to try more of their pastries! I made an unprecedented drive and visit to Auburn just to try breakfast and a cake slice at The Baker and the Cakemaker. The Breakfast Salad is beautifully plated. The SOFT EGG is perfection. I highly recommend ordering or adding the soft boiled egg to your meal. I cannot believe the restaurant manages to serve it warm without overcooking the yolk. The 3 pieces of bacon are tasty. The delicate slivers of shaved radish are lovely. You get chunks of fresh avocado. The salad greens are nothing special. I didn't like the vinaigrette or salt on the salad. Too vinegary, bitter, and too salty, but it's better if you mix up your salad. The Baker and the Cakemaker offers one Cake of the Week, where you are allowed to order one huge $6.99 cake slice. You must buy the other cakes whole with prices starting at $46. I went the week of Cinco de Mayo, so Strawberry Margarita was the Cake of the Week. The house made lime curd was too sour for me, but I am not a fan of lime in general. The white cake was fine, but I think I prefer softer cakes. I couldn't taste that it was tequila soaked. My favorite parts of the cake were surprisingly the Agave Golden Buttercream (smooth, not too sweet) and the strawberry. I also ordered a $9 loaf of Seeded Wheat Sourdough Bread. The bread is soft and delicious. The sourdough flavor is noticeable. The bread loaves looked so enticing. All breads are made with a sourdough yeast starter. Instructions on caring for your loaf: Spray with water and 5 minutes in a preheated 350-degree oven. Go early for the best selection. I didn't try the pastries, but if I remember correctly, the Cinnamon Rolls, Brioche, Muffins, and maybe Chocolate Croissants are popular. They looked appetizing. I would be interested in trying the quiche and a sandwich one day. Like the cake slice, there is a Quiche of the Week for $10.50. A whole quiche is $24. It seemed like most folks ordered a sandwich for lunch. You have your choice of bread: Campagne (French Sourdough), Levain, Seeded Wheat, Rye, or Roasted Pumpkin Seed. For $1, you can upgrade to a croissant or gluten-free bread. The Roasted Turkey, Spanish Ham & Manchego, Pastrami, Sunrise Sandi, and Breakfast Sandwiches sound yummy to me. Restaurant has about 6 tables for 4 inside and 5 tables for 2 outside. When you dine in, you receive a numbered wooden spoon to stick upright into a tall glass with pebbles. The restaurant will deliver your order to you, but you bus the table yourself. There are bins for your dirty plates and glasses where the napkins and utensils are. I had to take my time to drive around in a circle to find street parking. Local roads are narrower and a bit hilly here, so with cars parked, the bidirectional roads feel more like one way to me, so give yourself time to park. Restaurant isn't too far away from 80 and appears to be in a cute, convenient part of town near Auburn City Hall. read more

I'm very disappointed with the customer service at this coffee shop. Every time I visit, the employees at the front counter seem to have an attitude and are often unfriendly. A welcoming and positive experience is a big part of what keeps people coming back, and unfortunately that has not been my experience here. I would strongly encourage management to provide additional customer service training and emphasize the importance of treating customers with kindness and respect. They make artisan bread and pastries using organic flours. The cakes, pastries, cookies, and breads are all gorgeous looking. The bakery also serve fresh made sandwiches and salads, and coffee drinks. They have an indoor dining and outdoor sidewalk seating, cozy seating for smaller numbered groups. At the counter, I ordered an almond milk chocolate mocha but it tasted more like a latte. I also bought an almond croissant, frosted snowman sugar cookie, and chocolate chip cookie. This place is usually great. The food was great as always which is why I am still giving 3 stars. Today though, assured that I won't come back. We placed our order, paid, and sat down. We got drinks shortly after, but only got two iced teas. We told them we ordered three and they said no you ordered two. My mom literally held up three fingers when she ordered the drinks. Then a girl with really short curly hair and a nose ring has the audacity to come over and say here is your receipt you paid for two - she did give us our third tea though. She was really rude about it in general - she looked like she hated working there. Then we needed to order a cake for a party the following week and the same girl said she was "too busy" to let us order a cake and we had to do it online. Then she explained in a very condescending tone how to use the website - it would have been faster to take the cake order since it was one off the menu. Our food arrives. My aunt and mom are splitting a sandwich and we ask for an extra plate. Same rude girl says no she can't. What??? There was a couple next to us who literally had a sandwich split and had an extra plate. The food is good but I'm not paying for attitude.
