Out of my experiences with Indian cuisine, Brick Lane Curry House is the most friendliest menu for most amateur diners for Indian food. The menu is very straight forward with their prompt 'heat rating' for the newcomers as I was, but the quality of food is out of this world. So good! Had a craving for Indian food and this was the recommendation. A little further out from Montclair's downtown but still in a good area. The shop was small and not too busy for an early dinner on the weekend. We got the veggie samosas, lamb saag, chicken biryani, garlic and toasted sesame naan, and lamb chops. Everything was SO delicious! Samosas were pretty big, we split each between two people and the chutneys they came with them were perfect. The lamb saag was flavorful with decent chunks of lamb in it. The naan was really tasty, especially a fan of the garlic naan. Chicken biryani was a quality rice dish with the perfect amount of nuts/raisins/meat/spices distributed through it and came with a delicious yogurt sauce. The lamb chops were also incredibly tasty, but quite expensive for only 4 pieces. I really liked the sauce that came with it and kept having that with my naan. Price and service was decent. So Brick Lane at first glance did not present like an Indian restaurant. Its modern BOLD FONT of a sign and snazzy modern flare makes it look more like it may be a BBQ or Mexican spot (There is a Chili Logo over the door). I was blissfully un-aware until one day (driving while HUNGRY) I peeped that that it ALSO read "CURRY HOUSE". I did a quick Yelp check and saw that people really were diggin what these cats are cooking so I decided to check it out myself. (I DIGRESS) There was a time in my life where I was a slave to Indian food, My ex was pregnant with our daughter and she had the "MASALA CRAVINGS". During that time I ate so much Indian food that one day I walked into the elevator, smelled curry, and proceeded to gawk around at the occupants of the elevator trying to find the Indian among us; only to realize that it was ME... I was standing in the back and only realized this when others started scrunching their noses and looking around behind them. Curry was coming out of my pores. And it was STRONG. True story... It was around that time I recognized the bliss that is fine Indian Cusine. To date, I have NOT poked fun at my Indian friends for smelling like curry (because now I can identify) :) Looking at the online menu I figured a good way not to be hurt would be to give the lunch menu a taste. So Lunch it is! At an average of $10 it is VERY AFFORDABLE!!! To get a good standard baseline of the offering I ordered: Lamb Samosas Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb Vindaloo (Spicy Please) Garlic Naan TIP: The lunch special already comes with Naan, Dahl of the day, vegetable of the day, and Basmati rice. Once it was all on the table, the thought that popped into my head was that there was a to-go container in my immediate future. Worthy of note right off the bat was the Lamb Samosas. The relish that they serve with them is top notch. BOTTLE AND SELL FOLKS.. BOTTLE AND SELL... Whats more, after eating the samosas, I could not imagine ever eating another samosa without the relish. Big point for that. The naan was fresh and hot (as it should be), the side dishes were also very good. The lentils specifically were a nice balance to contrast the SPICIER than expected vindaloo. I can tolerate a fair amount of heat and have no problem with the runny nose and the heat sweats. I should have known when it came out with a long dried red chili on top that it was a sweat maker. If eaten straight, I may have had to take a break from the vindaloo but the combination balanced everything out nicely for me. The lamb itself however was tender and flavorful. Just as good as I have had anywhere. The real star at this joint to me was the Tikka Masala. I have taken down quite a bit of "DA MASALA" in my day and I have to say that this may have been the best I have ever had. I will have to venture back to Jackson Diner in Jackson Heights to compare but it was so good I had to stop the waiter and ask him for the story behind the fragrant and layered flavors that were slightly sweet yet still savory and complex. He nodded with pride and mentioned that this was a signature recipe for them and is known all over "Even in india" (He half whispered conspiratorially). He was very nice and made me laugh. Speaking of the service, I was very happy. I NEVER eat Indian food with out garlic naan. The lunch special comes with regular naan. I asked and was willing to pay for a separate order of garlic naan and was pleasantly surprised to have it brought gratis (it being my maiden voyage to Brick Lane). I am hard pressed to drop the fifth star on these guys as while the meal was a great value and the couple of items where real standouts, the rest of the meal to me was what i would consider above average. Appearance This is a pleasing indian restaurant in all aspects. Bricklane is decorated with clean, modern, glossy wood style. Funky lighting fixtures compliment this modern approach to Indian cuisine. I enjoyed this restaurant and would recommend. Food The food was flavored well. I got the tomato based marsala with goat. The goat was cooked well, slightly tough. We also had chicken simmered in sweet curry, Coconut dish. Chicken was super tender and moist. The califlower appetizer was delicious. I liked the food - but not so much the price i paid. Note that I did not sit and eat - was a home delivery. I ordered chicken tikka masala, samosas, three different types of naan. Food was decent but overpriced. Tandoori items lacked that 'smoky' flavour probably because they don't have clay tandoor. Liked the flavour of dal makhni though. Matar paneer was also decent. TLDR: solid dishes, that are a little too mild. Different than expected. A little too pricey. Stopped in during lunch on a Saturday for a quick bite. We were greeted by a friendly young man who let us choose our seat. The menu is concise but has enough variety to satisfy. We ordered the vegetable samosas, which were fluffy inside, and flakey on the outside. Overall very yummy. They were not served with tamarind chutney, which is what I'm used to, instead they were served with a spicy tomato chutney that was still very good. For mains, we ordered the chicken tikka masala and chicken korma. Both dishes were a seasoned differently than we were used to, but were still good nonetheless. We could have done with more spices and heat. The breads were good, especially the cheese stuffed one! The rice side was a bit stickier than normal and also lacked spices. It's super cute and romantic inside, great for a byob date night! My boyfriend and I shared the Chana Masala, Daal Makhani and a side of naan. The Daal Makhani was by far the better dish, I'd order two of those next time! The naan didn't disappoint. Luckily we were sat immediately, but a crowd developed while we were eating. Love Brick Lane! Had the chicken tandoori and splurged for the extra tikka masala curry sauce and rice (and garlic naan!) for an extra $5 which brought my order up to $23. Well worth it if you ask me! Sauce could be spicier (it wasn't spicy at all) but we didn't specifically ask... made a mental note to ask in the future. I wish this place was bigger. We went on a snowy Friday evening so we didn't have to wait to be seated but it could easily be a half hour wait in the spring/summer months. Modern, amazing, and delicious BYOB Indian restaurant. They have lots of vegetarian options. Their garlic naan was fresh and had real garlic slices. I don't remember the dish that I ordered since I went to this restaurant several weeks ago, but I remember it being so good that I can't wait to go back! The lunch special here is great deal -- your choice of curry (I got chicken tikka masala), rice, naan (I substituted with garlic naan which was plentiful, fresh, and perfectly seasoned),daal (savory veggie & potato mix) and lentils. "Give Mary her lamb back." So here we are. The election is over, Donald Trump is our new president and I am still hungrier than ever on a windy Friday after class. Still hard to read that second sentence, but I'm sure we'll all get used to it. With this new presidency, my stomach and I needed a meal to imagine the America that was always bound to happen. Brick Lane Montclair, you had a high order in putting me at ease with my hunger strike but unfortunately, it doesn't seem that you passed. Walking into Brick Lane, it was fairly peaceful. A disconnection from the outside world at it's finest. Colanders besieged the near-radiant light bulbs on the oatmeal-hued walls, depressing the incandescent light from ruining the benevolent mood. From the looks of the interior as well as the mood-setting lights and the small tables, Brick Lane is definitely a place for an intimate get-together with a loved one. Too bad three African-Americans males, including myself, had to figure that out the hard way. As we squirmed into our seats crammed in a corner of the restaurant, menus and water were distributed to us. We sifted through the menu, using Google accordingly, as we were unqualified to understand the Indian verbiage. This Google word search then turned into 13 minutes of waiting for our server to come back. This is one of the reasons why being ready to order can be crucial in times of hunger, but being a newcomer and foreign to the Indian culinary culture, my curiosities and decisiveness were warranted. Being a food critic, it is important to observe how responsive servers are to your requests and attention. Don't make me eat a Snicker now that you have me waiting. I'd rather you keep me in the front of your mind. Your tip depends on it. Yes, that sounds vulgar, but trust me, you have thought of worse to say when bad service comes your way when you're hungry. After daring one another to be a brave soul and try Phaal, I decided on a meal from the "Tandoor" menu. That means your meal is served on a sizzling platter plate, with basmati rice and tikka masala sauce for an additional $5. Tikka masala is usually made of ginger, cumin, salt, cayenne pepper, cinnamon or honey, garlic, tomato sauce, and turmeric. Must say, it was good for what I was expecting, but then again, maybe I wasn't expecting anything from it based on the fact that I had to wait nearly 25 minutes to eat. I ordered Seekh Kebabs, which are minced lamb with spices cooked on skewers. Once the food arrived, it was chow time. It had to live up to so much. Along with the unease of Donald Trump's presidency discussions, 25 minutes was a long time to wait for food and replace that time talking about politics. This food had a lot to prove and it didn't prove a thing. The minced lamb was tolerable. What a boring sentence for such a lovely piece of meat, or at least meat that should be lovely. There was an absence of zest from the lamb. The Korean powder mixed with chili powder, turmeric, cilantro, lemon juice, and chaat masala couldn't save it. The basmati rice was decent. Again, not the most eventful taste, but it fulfilled my human needs at the moment. Mixed with the tikka masala, the rice stood its ground on the tongue test. If only the lamb had helped it climb up the totem pole. This meal, although tolerable, didn't have anything that would make me come back. When I eat at a new restaurant, the service, as well as the preparedness of the meal, should surprise me in a positive manner, making me come back for more. Extremely Grossed Out!! There was a Roach crawling across the table while we were eating. My husband had to kill it. Never in my life have I experienced that. I definitely wouldn't expect that from a very expensive restaurant. All they could say was sorry and gave us 20% our bill which was still alot of money. I really would love to give this place 5 stars, but have not had great delivery experiences the last 3 times I've ordered. The food is awesome. For the last 9 months we've been loyal customers, nearly always ordering the Chicken Tikka. Three times ago they forgot the rice. We let it go. Last time they left out the sauce. When we called, we were told the sauce cost extra, which was strange because I use the "order again" button on the Eat 24 app, and have gotten sauce always. After basically telling me I was wrong, even though the Yelp menu clearly says 3 marinades, they eventually came back out with sauce. The chicken in both the Korma and the Tikka Masala was dry and hard -- either old or cooked from frozen. They also forgot the Raita I ordered. I called and spoke to a server who said the manager would call me back 20 minutes later that night to speak about a refund. I paid $60 for a very bad meal, and I never got a call back. I am a little annoyed at all the reviews complaining about the prices. Take a minute and google your go-to order. Take a look at how many freaking ingredients are in your favorite curry before complaining how much it costs! I don't understand the the hoopla about this place. I'm eating eating food regularly about 35 years and I found this to be a rather Americanized, watered down version of Indian food. Maybe if you are new to Indian food it will be ok for you. If you are used to it, maybe now so much. Spicing was bland. I asked for hot sauce twice. (one cup was not enough!). The naan was good. As was the papadum. The basmati was ok. My fish saag was just a piece of boiled (nuked?) tilapia thrown into a pre made saag, Which was more fatty than spicy. Actually, the saag was whipped into a mousse-like fluff. My Indian friends, is saag supposed to be whipped?? The tandoori shrimp was uneventful and covered in butter or oil. Parking situation isn't the best, and the location is small, but all that pales in comparison to the top notch quality dishes these guys are cranking out and the amazing spices they boast! They have a lunch special that I believe is either from 11am-3pm or 4pm --- for $11.99 you are getting one heck of a deal! You get Naan, veggie dish of the day, chick pea dish (I believe it's called daal?), a main dish with your choice of veggie, fish, chicken or lamb, and even a desert!!! WOW! I am so happy that I came to the resturant. The staff was so polite. The food was so good we had to call the chef out to tell him in person how good the food was. The hostess Rishika was so helpful. We had some serious questions about what meal was what and she took her time assisted us and answered all of our questions. As I was eating I observed how they handled the other customers. When Brick Lane first opened I was a huge fan. The food was better than any other Indian food I had eaten in this area. I brought with me anyone who I wanted to impress with a spectacular meal and excellent service. No more. I hadn't been to Brick Lane in two years, and when it was suggested we go I was very excited. We arrived earlier than normal, expecting to wait for a table, which we did. Once seated, our waiter took 15 min to take our order, continuously forgetting to bring us water and glasses for our wine. Upon taking our order we noticed that other tables who had been seated for a while were also waiting for food or service, while others were getting their meals in good time. For over a half and hour I noticed that nothing came out of the kitchen with the exception of many take-out bags. After an hour of waiting for our appetizers we decided to walk over to the kitchen and find out what happened. Our waitress stated they had lost our order. Without boring you, nothing ever appeared. After one hour and forty-five minutes of being in the restaurant we got up and left. Did they notice? Probably not. Did they care? Obviously not. Will we be back? Definitely not.
