Beautiful atmosphere, great selection of beer and wines. The food was great and the service was great till the end. We had a party of 11 people with each separate checks. Checks came and were missed up. Then the second and the third time still missed up at this point it has an over an hour patiently waiting for our checks. We asked for a manger and sadly no one was there to assist us. By this point we are getting frustrated. We've been one hour thirty minutes waiting for the correct check. The service was very good but the food was disappointing for the price we paid. $138 for two entrees and two sides and an appetizer with just water to drink. The 24 oz. steak was thin and unremarkable and I'm sure was not 24 oz. Brussels sprouts were okay but not great as were the crab cakes. The sautéed vegetables were basically peppers and onions... These were actually very tasty, but at $10 were pretty pricey for what they were. Atmosphere was nice but felt incomplete... There was no background music and the walls were basically bare. I made a reservation for a barrel room a week prior to my wife's birthday. We show up the night of her birthday and the hostess asks us if we have a reservation, confirms, and tells us to wait. A group of 4 comes in behind us with no reservation and gets seated before us. Then the worst happens.. the hostess comes to us and says that no barrel room is available the rest of the night! so she goes and seats us at a table right next to the door where it was absolutely freezing! To make matters worse as the hostess was taking us to our seat she stops and has a full on conversation with another customer waiting on a table and my wife and I are just standing there in the middle of the restaurant while everyone just looked at us. So we sit down at our drafty oddly sized table and By this time we're starved so we order an appetizer, bad move. Hummus plate came with three huge tasty looking hummus bowls and then a couple pieces of store bought cold little bread triangles, bell peppers, carrots, and olives. All but one of the hummus Bowls were tasteless but it didn't matter much seeing as there was barely anything to dip with. Entrees and dessert were pretty good and is really what stopped me from giving this place one star. For the price we paid I don't foresee us coming back, we honestly would have been happier eating at a chain restaurant or steak house and got better food at half the price. read more

We made reservation for Valentines day at 6pm. We show up and we were seated quickly. We sat there for 20 minutes without having a waitress even come to the table. The hostess sat another couple close to us so we asked her to send the waitress to us. We sat there another 10 minutes and finally a waitress comes and waits on the table that sat down 20 minutes after us. After 30 minutes without speaking to a waitress and without anything to drink we decided to leave and find somewhere that wanted our business. I hate that i have to give them even one star. I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere is great, there's a lovely bar and very kind waitstaff. However, I have to say their menu was a little bit small when it came to entrees and their $40 16oz Bone-In Ribeye was EXTREMELY disappointing. The steak looked kind of dry but was pretty juicy, I have to say it was just lacking in the seasoning department and could have used just some salt and pepper to bring it back to life, but I got an overwhelming charcoal taste from the extreme grill marks left on the steak. (Which is normally not something to complain about) I would expect a restaurant of this caliber knows that you have to salt steak?! Or at the least put some flavored butter on top instead of giving me a flavorless burnt piece of beef-jerky. What a glorious piece of beef wasted. The waiter brought me their half-rack of lamb and I have to say it was OKAY, but not the greatest. AGAIN lacking salt which is crucial to a good piece of meat. The sauce on lamb has way too much pieces of raw rosemary and tasted kind of like maple syrup with rosemary. The star of the show was their amazing mashed potatoes which had lots of butter and garlic flavor (AND ACTUALLY HAD SALT.) We had calamari as an appetizer and it was no better than generic frozen squid you get at Olive Garden. Ultimately we were pretty disappointed in a bill that was well over 100 bucks and not much of anything either of us liked. So if you want some overpriced generic food that tastes like it's cooked by a chef from Ryan's Steakhouse, Bricks and Barrels is the place for you. read more

I returned to Bricks & Barrels because I heard they have made some major improvements. I was really impressed with the updates to the menu. They have lowered the prices, added a burger menu and and added small sides to the entrees (a dollop of potatoes and vegetables, but an improvement from before). The quality of the food still fell far short of what I would expect for the prices. My husband ordered the Chilean sea bass, which to me, was not edible. He could barely choke it down. It was hard on the outside, cold on the inside and incredibly fishy - not fresh. I ordered lamb and requested medium-rare. The lamb arrived and was completely raw on the inside. They were really nice about it when I asked them to cook it longer. The lamb was okay. I wish I had tried the burgers, but I probably won't go back again for the food a third time. read more

To be fair, I ordered pasta here when I knew they specialized more in meat type dishes. The Cajun chicken pasta would have made most of Louisiana weep with how little flavor it hard to it. It was more like a chicken alfredo than anything. However, my dinner partners meal looked wonderful & they thoroughly enjoyed it. I even told a coworker about it who likes going to more upscale places out of state and it's now one of he & his wife's favorite places here. Revisited Bricks and Barrels this evening for my birthday. The food was outstanding! I had the lamb chops and my husband had the filet. My previous review identified the restaurant as a la carte....seems to no longer be the case as our entrees were served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. No problem, yummy dish of mashed to enjoy tomorrow. The service has improved exponentially! Our server was very professional and polite. EDIT: Changed from 2 stars to 4 stars. Although the bar patrons were loud and crass at times, this is not the fault of the restaurant. However, at least 2 of the people were clearly employees (possibly off-duty). read more

We've had a little bit of everything on the menu, but the surf and turf is my favorite. The inside of this place was amazing... Bricks and barrels it was. Great spot for drinks, prices matched the environment and the drinks were well poured. For the appetizers I had the lobster pops and fried green tomatoes... lobster pops I already don't remember but the fried green tomatoes will make your toes curl up in a good way. I'm mad at myself for not doubling up on them. For my entrée I had the pork chop with seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes. Pork chop was well executed, nice and juicy however way under seasoned and almost flavorless... Is that a word? Either way it didn't taste like anything other than a juicy piece of meat. Ok, moving on... Sides were just sides... skimpy portions and id they were anything above average I may have ordered more. The service however was on point. Friendly staff and handled a big group well. Our waitress was amazing for handling a group of 20 all by herself. I was surprised she didn't get help serving until it was time for the last 5 plates were coming out. Me using my manners waited until everyone received their plates so I had to eat mine a little room temperature, thanks mom! Didn't take a pic cause I guess there was no wow factor as far as plate appeal. The taste of the dish followed unfortunately. Next time I'll probably just hit the bar. read more

First time. Environment was a fine mix of casual and calm, rustic yet simply elegant. Our server was highly professional from first to last. The food: I had the goat cheese salad. Beautifully creamy with a gentle vinaigrette and a pleasing combination of greens and accompaniments. Then calamari: Perfectly cooked. My only complaint is that it was time to change the cooking oil. I'll be trying it again, just the same. Entree: Seared scallops with mash and grilled asparagus. The food was cooked with precision, delicately seasoned to suit almost any palate, and presented like a piece of art - just as one should expect when shopping for a fine meal. Finally, bread pudding: never an easy savory to build. While I lean toward a bit more custard, I know I'm in the minority. It was flavorful, properly cinnamoned and with the added touch of home-made vanilla icecream, an all-around success. My dinner companion had a bone-in ribeye that he shared. It was exquisitely seasoned, and the bites I had made me nearly take his plate away from him! Cocktails: I'm a lightweight overall when it comes to alcohol, but one thing I know is a good margarita. Kudos to the barman if he was trying to impress with a bit of a heavy pour. I think he can ease up just a little and present the perfect dinner drink. I rarely give 'em, but...5 stars. The ambiance is lovely and the service is phenomenal, but the food is just not worth the price tag. The oysters Rockefeller were the worst I've ever had, and while my four little scallops were fine... & my husband's big honkin tuna steak was okay... It was just far too expensive for the quality of what you get. I cook a lot at home and when I go out to eat, I like feeling that I am getting a meal more delicious & better prepared than I could do myself. I just feel like so many restaurants in charleston care far, far too much about ambiance and not enough about interesting menu options and really going above and beyond with the food. Next time I feel like spending this kind of money on a meal, it will be in Pittsburgh at my favorite restaurant- Cure. Until then I will cook at home and enjoy mid- to low-end local fare like Yen's, Black Sheep, Pies & Pints, and Little India (to-go, of course). read more

This review is based on the conversation I had over the phone with Jacob. I called regarding a horrific incident that happened with my mother in front of CAMC on Morris Street. I asked if they had any cameras pointing towards the road as the man who viciously attacked my mother had ran in that direction. They did not but Jacob was so kind and showed much concern for my mother. He took my name and number down and offered to help by even calling the people he knew at the Power Park next door. After hanging up with him, he must have spoken with his mother who I assume is the owner. She called me back immediately and said that even though they didn't have cameras out front, the landlords did have some on the parking lot and offered to go over footage just to make sure. I cannot tell you how much this means to me. I live in NYC now and only visit a handful of times a year but they have gained a customer in me solely based on the way they've treated me over the phone. I cannot thank them enough for taking the time and showing such great concern for the people of Charleston. It is greatly and truly appreciated! read more

Ok... As a reformed meat eater (though I still occasionally eat fish, I just didn't want fish last night), let me just say the vegetarian options were straight up weak - eggplant stuffed with tabbouleh or tofu with vegetables Napoleon. I went with the tofu, because I know I'm super picky about my eggplant. First impression: "huh?"... Everything else in the restaurant was served on gorgeous white geometric plates. My dish was served on black dish. It wouldn't have been that big a deal except that the stack was served on top of a huge puddle of basil "dressing" (puréed basil and oil from what I could tell - it could've used some lemon juice or zest) and a similar oily tomato substance. Against a black plate, the basil looked - menacing? A spoon-swipe of the two dressings on a white plate would have looked elegant and bright. On to the Napoleon itself: a stack of grilled veg and tofu, namely a whole portobello, sweet potato, tomato steak, zucchini and yellow squash, tofu and carrot matchsticks. The mushroom was undercooked, the tomato was a hothouse tomato and was quite anemic (bring on the summer beefsteaks!!!) the sweet potato was fine (not my fave veg, but whatevs), the squash/zucchini was WAY over cooked (to the point of being slimy with no crunch whatsoever) and the tofu - while well cooked - was not marinated and therefore bland. The carrots were the tastiest bit, and were tiny. It didn't come with pasta, rice or potato (really? I'm paying $19 for four dollars worth of veg - $2 of that is tofu, so technically protein. You can't dress the plate with a spoon of risotto or pasta with oil and parm???) The wait staff was GREAT and genuinely wanted to hear our thoughts on the meal. Their booze choices were plentiful and quality - I had an Ace pineapple cider that made me think of back porches and Popsicles. The restaurant is gorgeous. The prices are WAY inflated and the a la carte menu is just a schmancy way of added price inflation - $40 for lamb (it might have been less, but after the first two or three entrees, I just stopped thinking about prices) should come with a starch. Potatoes, pasta, and rice are cheap - $8 for garlic mash?? Sure there was enough to share between the two of us. The mashed potatoes were fine, and I loved that they kept the skins in, but I like mine better - rustic potatoes should be pretty hefty, theirs were overworked. Maybe that's the rub for me. When I go out to a fine-dining restaurant, I want to pay good money for food I can't cook at home. I could've made both of our dishes at home and made them better. Le sigh. read more

I can't say this was a terrible experience, because it wasn't. However, I definitely can't say it was great. Since this place first opened, my boyfriend and I had been dying to try it, so as soon as we got the chance, we went. We were seated quickly, but waited a very long time before anyone came to take our drink order. When someone finally took our drink order, we waited at least 20 minutes before we got drinks. I ordered a soda and my boyfriend ordered a beer, so it was nothing complicated. In the time that we waited on drinks, the waitress even stopped by our table to reassure us that our drinks would come eventually. Seriously? Then an entirely different waiter came and introduced himself and said he would now be serving us. While he was friendly, he wasn't much faster than the other waitress. The rest of our meal went ok, I ordered the filet and my boyfriend ordered the porterhouse. Both were cooked to our liking. We got two sides to share, the mashed potatoes and the risotto. Both were good, but I recommend making the size of the sides a little smaller and charging a little less. We were not a fan of the odd green sauce that came on both of our plates. So, with all this being said, I can't say the meal was a waste, but for the price, I would typically expect great food and even better service, and I felt let down on both aspects here. read more

We went to 6/10/15 for a bday dinner. Our were overwhelmed by the smell of fish as soon as we walked thru the door...it was not a pleasant smell. We were seated and given menus. Our 2nd surprise of the night were the prices. Everything was priced ala carte. I'd say an entree with a side started at about $30 and up to easily $60. Our meals came and 3 out 5 dishes were cold. In general food was bland and dry. (no salt/pepper to season yourself) Our tab for 5 people was around $275. It was a very disappointing experience. read more

Tried Bricks and Barrels for the first time last night. It doesn't seem as though the kinks are worked out yet. They owners have spent much time on the decor and it is beautiful but more attention should be spent on service and food, especially at the price. My salmon was excellent and also the sides- asparagus and risotto. However the mushroom soup was served cold and too thick and a bit bland. The brussel sprouts were too crunchy. The lobster bisque was salty. The tuna was overcooked but the manager took that from our bill. The wait staff should have more training in describing and suggesting the products. With the other choices in Charleston I don't believe I will be trying this one again soon. read more

Nice quiet atmosphere and plenty of parking. The food was great. My husband and I really liked it. We started off with an appetizer fried green tomatoes with a petite filet mignon that was really delicious and cooked to perfection. I really like the choices of menu selections. Somewhere different for this area of Charleston. I had one of the best shrimp and grits ever and a generous portion which is a featured item. My husband had a pork chop with garlic mash potatoes.
