    Salmon on grilled pineapple
    Cathy W.

The spot is a cute long bar, except if you sit by either door on a cold night. Our server, Bee, was great and very " sweet" and responsive. My salmon was good but the grilled asparagus was way overdone, as were the pork chops( dry and tough). Average soups and salads and heave on cheesecake for dessert. Wine was only California; guess not many people pass the bourbon or beer to get wine.

Downstairs from Hale House is a quiet speakeasy.

Cool vibey place with brick and wood, nice atmosphere. Had a delicious prime rib sandwich with horseradish and au jus on a baguette. This was perfectly made and delicious. Washed this down with a michelada. For starters, we had pimiento cheese fries, which were also delicious. Everyone else in our party also really enjoyed their food. Good service. Definitely recommend!

In Charleston for a conference and decided to give Hale House a try. They have an impressive bourbon selection. I dropped a couple pictures of it in here. Prices are steep but when you're the only bourbon game in town with a collection like this, the decision becomes, how bad do you want it!? I ordered the pimento fries as an appetizer and they didn't hit expectations. They were pretty salty and lacked pimento, there was an overwhelming flavor of white cheddar. I ordered the waygu burger and it was fantastic, I recommend that. I got it medium with just onion tomatoes and pickle. Service was average for a place like this and they weren't busy.

'Chicken breast sandwich' lol. Flat as a pancake. Terrible value.

Ordered the chicken breast sandwich. The 'chicken breast' was about as thick as cardboard. Flavor was good but there just wasn't anything there. Wife ordered prime rib medium rare, came out medium well. Menu was super plain with very bland descriptions of the entrees. We both commented that nothing on the menu grabbed our attention while we tried to figure out what to order. First time, maybe we'll give it another chance but the first go sucked.

We were on a cross country road trip and stopped in Charleston overnight. We found Hale House on yelp - and it was a highlight of our trip. Our server, Kristin, was exceptional. She helped us select our Bourbon flights - which were perfect. She also made appropriate menu recommendations. Highlights included the Bourbon-Bacon wrapped shrimp, wedge salad, steak special, sweet potato mash, and peanut butter pie. We may never visit Charleston again- but we are thrilled to have experienced Hale House!

    Burger with provolone

I visited this busy restaurant on a recent business trip and pretty much had to sit at the bar, or wait nearly an hour for a table of 1. I chose the bar and only had to wait 5 mins for a seat to open up. The menu is not that large but has some great choices. I opted for the jumbo shrimp cocktail and a burger. I would give them a D on cheese options since they only offer American cheese or provolone. I prefer cheddar on a burger, if I order cheese at all. I also added a sweet tea. Shrimp appetizer - the menu said jumbo shrimp, but these would have been considered large or even medium size back in Texas. They are served on lettuce with a side of cocktail sauce. Nothing fancy about the presentation here. I should have never ordered shrimp in a landlocked state to begin with. Burger - cooked to order and I chose medium rare. It comes with 1 side and I chose onion rings. The burger was okay, but when deconstructed the beef patty tasted similar to what may parents made on a weekly basis. For $16, it should be elevated but it wasn't in any way I felt. The onion rings are thick cut and taste almost beer-battered. They were okay. Overall, the experience was good, just not great.

    Waygu burger

We had dinner here based on recommendation for our hotel employee Jerry. Such a fabulous choice. Historic building and perfect ambiance. Our server was Tiffany - such a delightful employee. Hubby had Waygu burger and I had angel hair crab cakes. Absolutely delicious. If you are ever in town this is a must for dining and drinks.

    Upstairs Dining

Great place to eat or relax in Charleston West Virginia. They did a great job creating a speakeasy downstairs with a wide variety of bourbons to choose from. The ladies in the group insist their espresso martinis are to die for. The food was excellent with no complaints. I personally had the Wagu Burger.

I was in town for a short business trip and one of the locals recommended this place. We initially went to the restaurant, which was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the vibe, and the service was top-notch as well. We were told there was a speakeasy attached to it so after dinner, we decided to go downstairs and check it out. What an amazing place. The ambience was as if I had gone back in time to a true speakeasy. The music was divine and our drinks were some of the best I've ever had. We ended up staying there for several hours because it was such a nice experience. I definitely recommend the Hale house. But Don't leave without visiting the downstairs speakeasy.

Manhattan and French onion soup at the bar
    Carl D.

My first visit was truly a top-flight experience! I went for Happy Hour and enjoyed their $5 Manhattans at the main bar before tucking into solid food. The French onion soup was excellent, as were the house salad and the bacon-maple shrimp. And at Happy Hour, prices were also very favorable. But as good as food can be, service can make or break an establishment. In this case, it made it even better! My bartender, Mami, was attentive and chatted with me as much as her workload would allow, but never did she ignore her other guests. Clearly, a person suited for the hospitality industry! Two return visits were less stellar. The happy hour drinks and the food were still as good but the two guys behind the bar weren't particularly engaging. They brought the drinks and took the food orders promptly but, aside from checking that everything was OK, they were more interested in talking among the other staff members than with their guests. Maybe I'm in the minority because I was at the bar alone and would have liked a bit more interaction. Lots of people were there as parties of two or more so they had other distractions. I did not. When I'm on the road, I often eat dinner at the bar for a little interaction. Unfortunately, the word "little" was accurate. After my one drink and appetizer upstairs, I decided to see if the downstairs speakeasy was any more welcoming, and indeed it was. In addition to the bartender Mami, who'd been at the upstairs bar on my firs visit, seemed to truly enjoy engaging with her guests. The overall atmosphere is clubby enough that patrons seem more inclined to talk to each other. The only drawback is that they don't serve food at the speakeasy. Drinks only. The food and drink didn't disappoint, but the service could definitely have been better.

Prime rib sandwich with sweet potato fries

My husband and I went here for a date night. The food was amazing and the service was fantastic. I got the prime rib sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband got the Waygu burger with regular fries. Both were delicious and the portions were big, we could have split one entree and been full. Overall everything was delicious, great portions, very reasonable prices, and amazing service!

The 12oz rib eye and the asparagus so delicious. The drinks were good as well but I feel like they do rush you to order, that was the only down fall.

Prime rib medium rare, au gratin potatoes, a pour of the house red (which was stupendous), and a pour of the Eagle 17

Loved the Hale House! I drove up from the RVA to hike the New River Gorge NP on Friday and had dinner in Charleston, WV at Hale House. My server, Anne, was phenomenal!! She helped me get the prime rib (their specialty) and a pour of a very rare bourbon (which was awesome!). Took the peanut butter pie to go and enjoyed that in the hotel before my run the next morning at the Charleston, WV ParkRun the next morning. Ambiance was incredible... but recommend making sure your ride share service knows which entrance to pick you up from. Highly recommend The Hale House and especially Anne if she is still there.

The pizza toppings and sauce were flavorful, the crust had just enough crispness and chewy bite to it. Salad was very fresh and crisp. Gorgonzola dressing flavorful but not over-powering. Had a Headhunter IPA recommended by our server was great. Great meal. Excellent service. Only suggestion I'd have is to put up a more visible sign. Walked by it once and on way back to hotel asked some peole on sidewalk where it was and they pointed across the street. Fun atmosphere.

I wanted to try something new and interesting and through my Yelp research I found this spot. It's located in downtown with metered street parking free Monday-Saturday nights after 6pm and all of Sunday. Luckily, we were able to find a spot easily. Inside was modern and relatively clean. We had to wait a little bit to be seated as they were pretty busy; however, this place had a decent amount of seating and space. Service was good overall, but it wasn't as consistent as I would've liked for actions such as water refills, asking for extra napkins, etc. This was partly because they were very busy that night. They have a variety of food options - apps, salads, sandwiches, pies (pizzas), and dessert. We ended up ordering a large pizza (thin crust) to split - half Thai and half Chicken Gouda. Both were yummy although the crust was a tad burnt - nothing bad to the extent that taking bites were an effort. Overall, I preferred the Thai since I've never come across a Thai style pizza and I could really taste the curry sauce. The only downside of the Thai was that the shrimp were slightly overcooked, which could be potentially explained by us ordering a pizza split in two styles with them cooking the entire pizza evenly versus what is needed for each ingredient. We finished the entire pizza between the two of us, but I could see someone having some leftovers. If possible, they might want to do some minor pest management. The entire time of our visit a fruit fly or gnat was hovering around us and the food. We tried to catch it and protect the food, only for it to ultimately take a permanent dip in my water. My overall assessment was that it was a good place to try in the city. It's not something I would crave, but I wouldn't mind coming back again if I was in the area.

A major plus to this Seasonal Depression Sufferer! We went to the bar to place our order! We opted for the Knotty Boy Garlic Knots for $10 & the Fully Loaded Detroit Style Pizza for $15I had a bottle of water and though he was very disappointed that it was ONLY their WV Craft Beer served, he went with what the bartender recommended (closest to a PBR & Budweiser that they offered ) for $5.50, total with taxes & Tip was $42. We were surprised that the food was out in like 15 minutes. We fully expected to wait since Detroit Deep Dish normally takes 30 minutes to 45 minutes to cook fully. This led us to believe it was PAR BAKED for faster Customer Service which to many is NOT A PLUS! The Garlic Knots were very doughy and extremely dense in texture. Not a fan! The service was fast and friendly but for the atmosphere, price and the fact they are trying to be trendy, the paper plates & plastic cutlery was a BIG NEGATIVE!! I know myself even if Melanac Hard Plastic for plates is okay, but I want true Silverware!! The sauce has a really Great flavor and the cheese pull was very nice on the pizza. The sauce served on top, a big big plus!! I live in Ripley, WV and drove 35 minutes one way to enjoy this meal, but the question is...would I do it again?? Probably NOT! I give them a 5 out of 5 on atmosphere and ambience they nailed that! I give them a 4 out 5 on Customer Service because the food came too fast!! I give them a 3 out 5 for the food, the sauce was perfect but everything else about taste and flavor was a hit and miss. The score might have been higher if I had left off the Knotty Boy Garlic Knots!! The beer though I tasted it wasnt bad but Im not a beer drinker, my hubby was very disappointed so thats 2 out of 5 stars and the tableware scores a zero!! I wasn't on a picnic and the paper and plastic screams picnic or lazy kitchen staff to me!! So, would I recommend? I must say overall, 3 stars out of 5 stars! I recommend you go and decide for yourself!
