It's taken me years, but I finally found it. True Chicago pizza. Not the deep dish, or stuffed-crust pizza that Chicagoans have on special occasions (and what the tourists always want.) But the Chicago pizza that hundreds of taverns, and local eateries serve, and is an everyday treat. The kind the taverns cut into 2" squares to entice the post-work crowd to drink more before going home. It's a thin crust, not perfectly round, with a crunchy edge, and even though it's thin, it has yeast. The thin crust pizza that you'll get in Chicago and Milwaukee is unlike the thin crust pizza you get anywhere else. And it's addictive. Well, no longer do I need to fly to Chicago or Milwaukee to get it. I can get it here in Portland at Bridge City Pizza. The pizza here is as authentic as if I were in Chicago or Milwaukee. And I love it. They import their sausage from Chicago as well to complete the taste. And they use large portobello mushrooms to give a big mushroom flavor that's standard in Chicago as well. The staff was wonderful to talk to as well, and they're well aware of how important an authentic Chicago tavern style pizza is to us transplanted Midwesterners. If you're taking the pizza home, they pack it up in a bag, not a box, like the old-school pizzerias in Chicago do, too. There's plenty of parking in the lot they share with Plaid Pantry, and it's a straight shot down Woodstock to I-205 to get you home to anyplace on the east side of the metro area before it goes cold. So don't let the Woodstock address fool you into thinking it's hard to get to. I got myself an 18" pizza, and portioned it out into 5 meals, vacuum sealing the left-overs, and it is amazingly good even reheated. (I used an air fryer.) I am going to return to them on a regular basis. This is now my favorite pizza, especially since it doesn't require flying to Chicago or Milwaukee. I cannot say enough good things about the pizza here. read more

Our pizza was excellent. The crust was crunchy yet chewy (the right way), the sauce was really tasty and it was cooked perfectly. Not really a fan of their packaging (paper not cardboard) but I'm sure it's more eco-friendly. The price are not too high, everything's expensive these days. To finish, the service is great. It eont be long before we go back. p.s. we had half and half.... sausage/black olive/peperoncini and spinach/jalapeño/fresh tomatoes. We will repeat this one!! read more

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. I called my order in and waited the 45 minutes I was quoted. When I got there they told me my pizza needed to be remade because it had burnt to the pizza stone. It took another 45 minutes before my pizza was ready. They did throw in a free order of mozzarella sticks and the employees seemed genuinely sorry. Was super excited to try this place out - but left pretty disappointed. Pizza is unremarkable. Crust is bland, sauce is mid. Pepperoni was lower quality. Would be fine if it were cheap, but at 29 menu price - can't justify it. Add that to the $3 they charged me to make it a half pep half cheese? It would be great if: 1. The people answering your phones to take orders didn't sound like they could careless about the business coming in. 2. The people delivering your food could make sure that there are napkins and utensils to eat said food ordered. As soon as we paid the delivery chick and made sure to give the proper 20% tip she turned around immediately and just left - no "thank you" or "have a great night". She seemed very annoyed with having to deliver our food to us. Ordered a 14-inch pizza and an Italian beef sandwich on a weekday night, was told 40 minutes and when we arrived everything was hot and fresh. By the time we got home the Italian beef was a soggy mess, might want to eat it there, as our drive home took a little bit longer as we were behind the good 'ol 75 bus for a few minutes. The giardiniera hot peppers were a delight and crisp, I asked for them on the side. I would buy a jar of these peppers if they sold them. The beef was fresh and flavorful with a savory side of plentiful au jus. Definitely has the Windy city/midwest vibes, bringing you back to the midwest dive bars, and the hotdog/sando shops that prolifically are in abundance throughout Chicago and the midwest. We had leftovers for lunch the next day, heated the stone in the oven, and enjoyed the crisp crust and gooey cheese. This pizza reheats well on a stone. It's Chicago style pizza and the quality is no Bull. Buttery flaking crust that isn't burnt. Cut in squares. Not deep dish. Fresh toppings. The marinara has a zing to it, but it tastes like they just made it. I think what gives it that 5 star oomph is the owner personally saying, "Hey, if anything isn't perfect, please let us know and we'll make sure it is." Where does this happen anymore? I've had 3 pies from Bridge City. All have been superb. I'm not saying I'm picky about my pizza. I have cheap eats pizza places and places I actually crave. I've previously ordered from them and they're average, at best. Last time I ordered two combos with no giardiniara or peppers and they still loaded it up so I ended up throwing the sandwiches away. Decided to try it again tonight and placed an order for pizza, sandwiches, sodas and breadsticks, leaving the same note in the Uber Eats app asking for the sandwiches to not have peppers or giardiniara. They decided that instead of fulfilling that one request on an $80 order they'd just cancel it. No phone call or text or note or anything. I only found out when I checked the status an hour later and it showed that the order was canceled. Again, the food is nothing to write home about so maybe I dodged an $80 bullet by not getting a lukewarm sack of mediocrity. Still, it'd be nice to get some kind of notice that they've found a new way to disappoint. It's really too bad, they're so much closer than Michaels that I wanted to give them an honest chance to wow me. Oh well, Michael's is WAY better anyways. read more

This is one of our neighborhood pizza joints and we feel quite lucky they are. Chicago tavern style pizza done really well. The sandwiches are great when you are in the mood for that kind of thing and my kids love their cheese curds. As a Chicago native, this pizza brings me back home, every time. I've order from Bridge City over 50 times. It's classic tavern style pizza done proper, sweet sauce, extra cheese, baked crispy, square cuts for life! The roast beef is spot on, order it dipped. Order a Pizza puff on the side for fun. My only complaint is sometimes they don't pick up their phone on Sunday mornings at open. Overall super friendly staff, I highly recommend. read more

I get the normal style of pizza from here frequently and it's very very good. I have never been disappointed with it once. However I decided to try the stuffed pizza for a change it was pretty pretty bad. No one in our family enjoyed it and were all incredibly disappointed. While driving back from Idaho with "The Blonde", I asked her to look up some pizza joints on our way home so we could grab one and take it to the house to eat after our long drive.. She told me she had found a place that people were raving about and that it was thin crust South Side Chicago style pizza.. I didn't believe it.. I was skeptical for I grew up on South Side Pizza like Aurelio's and Geno's and haven't found anything and I mean any pizza in the entire state of Oregon that could compare, period.. Then she read me the menu for the pizza selections and then the selection of sangwitches (Sandwich for those that don't know), which made me say, "No Fricking way".. Then asked her to order up a pie to go.. She got two.. We walked into the joint and I met the owner, who also happens to be a "Joe" and from the area I grew up in.. Fricking amazing.. Someone there gave us some Giardiniera that was outstanding.. Fresh, just the right amount of spice.. I was floored.. I was now hooked.. Joe and I talked about Pizza in the south side, how we can't seem to find that style in the entire Portland area.. I saw him cut the pie up into squares they way pizza was meant to be cut.. I saw him take the pie off the the pan and the last couple of minutes or so it was in the oven getting a crisp up.. The pizza was in a real pizza bag.. like it should be.. OMG could this be too good to be true? I was yeah baby this going to be good... We got our pie and said goodbye in anticipating the taste, not really looking forward to a 23 minute drive before I could open it up and taste it... I need a warp machine to get home to eat the pie We put the pie on the counter at home in the kitchen... Looked at it and I grabbed a piece and took a bite.. Wow! Memories came flooding back to me.. I remember how much I missed the pizza I grew up on.. That tangy and slight sweet sauce.. The red / green peppers with just the right texture.. The Sausage that was coarse ground, slightly spicy.. Man.. This is the spot. I've got to start off with a disclaimer that I have not had their pizza. Also, it's worth noting that I went two days in a row for the same thing after trying it to the first time. Being a Chicago expat, I've been seeking out the best Italian beef in Portland off and on for the past year or so. Bridge City Pizza is hands down, the absolute best. When I unwrapped the sandwich, the first thing I saw was all the giardiniera spilling out. I've literally got bottles of giardiniera stashed in the pantry -- I bring some back every time I visit Chicago as it's seemingly unavailable here. Jalapeños, carrots, celery, olives, onion, their house giardiniera is the business. There is a super healthy amount of beef that tastes just right, and the au jus is so good. Not that packaged, powder and water stuff. It has depth. So, yeah, get an Italian beef! The gents working there are true Chicagoans, we spent my time waiting discussing the Bulls, Blackhawks, and disagreeing over being a Cubs or Sox fan.
