With a 2015 lineup that included the Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, and Spoon, the SF Chronicle referred to an "apparent 2002 theme" for this year's Bridge School Benefit Concert. As if 2002 was a bad year... The Bridge School Benefit is two separate concerts (Saturday, Sunday), both with a similar line-up, both benefiting the Bridge School which has been justly rewarded from 29 years of benefit concerts with stellar lineups. This school, serving children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs, has grown to have global impact as a result of these concerts. It's a worthy cause to support. If this year's concert (which also included St. Vincent, Gary Clark, Jr., Nils Lofgren on Saturday, and - of course - it's host, Neil Young) was any indication, I envision this concert becoming an annual event on my calendar. $35 bought me a ticket to lawn seating and 8 hours of music. No joke, the concert began at 2 p.m. and wrapped up at 10 p.m. sharp. That's an incredible deal whether or not you care for every featured band. Best bet? Go in with an open mind and get to know some artists with whom you might not already be familiar. As a testament to this approach I can tell you that I wound up liking almost every artist I thought I didn't and the reverse. So use it as an opportunity to blow your mind a bit. Who knows what you like? Each artist plays only 6 -7 songs, all amplified acoustic music. A break between artists adds length to the concert and, in general, is something I wish multi-artist concerts would get a better handle on, so use that opportunity to a) purchase more beer/wine and b) work your fitbit by walking around the entire amphitheater in a big circle. And: * Free parking up quite close at the Shoreline; * Lots of ganja in the air; * At least on Sunday, attendees seemed to arrive late and leave early but you obviously get the most bang for your buck by making a day/night of it; * Lawn chairs can be brought in or rented ($5/per chair); * Day of show I found on-line tickets (in actual seats) as low as $16/seat making this a possibly great last-minute activity; * The crowd is a melting pot of everything under the sun. Old people, young people, families with kids, and everything in between. Everyone fits in here. * Past concerts have included Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Jerry Garcia, David Bowie, Green Day, and the list goes on and on. * All participating artists donate their time to this cause; * Neil (and ex-wife Pegi) have a son who attended the Bridge School. read more

Acoustic entertainment at it's best; And all for a great cause. Now I've been to Shoreline on several occasions to listen to a little bit of rap and a little bit of metal. But never had I gone here to to just relax and enjoy an all-acoustic sound from a list of well-known artists. It's simply fantastic for the artist to just come out and convert their songs to simple melody. All while showing their support and entertaining these beautiful, talented, lucky, and very loved impaired individuals. As for the message and music, now this is Neil and Pegi Young's thing! You can almost feel their good intentions from beginning to end. And as they explain their cause, can you almost feel their expressions! They're simply asking for your support. All proceeds going directly to benefit the operations of The Bridge School. Here's was the enjoyable lineup of 2014 entailed: ~ Pearl Jam - Classic! If you grew up to them, you'll easily sing along. ~ Florence + The Machine - Melodic! Great at first, but not a fan. Almost fell asleep. ~ Brian Wilson - eh! Round round get around I snored around! Boring! ~ Tom Jones - Tom, you da EFFIN' MAN! That guy's still got it! ROCKED THE HOUSE!!! ~ Soundgarden - Chris Cornell AWESOME VOCALS! The HIGHLIGHT of my evening! A true artist that was honest and felt comfortable converting his hard rock music to acoustic. Will never forget those vocals! ~ Norah Jones and Puss N Boots - Such a fine talented trio!!! Love Norah! So glad I finally saw her! ~ Band of Horses - Never heard of them, but they put on a great set. Good seeing them on stage. ~ Pegi Young & The Survivors - Didn't know her music, but you gotta use the bathroom at some point right? j/k Well what can you say! This is half of her gig. First off, shout out to Yelp and Abby S for the free ticket giveaway! Great school, great program, great benefit to help them out- originally started by Neil Young and his wife, Pegi. For over 20 years, this show has annually raised funds to support the Bridge School, who work with children to help them with communication and assistive technology. Until I heard about this on Yelp, I did not know what a big deal this concert series was- people come in from all over the country and all over the world for this! Met people from Germany, Canada, and all over the US. Many come every year, and make a vacation out of it with camping- apparently most of the hotels sell out far in advance for this weekend. This year's lineup was fairly good- Heart, fun., Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis, CSNY, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, and Tom Waits, to name a few. While researching prior to going, I came across several other years' participants, and this year was not quite as to my liking as other years- Sarah McLachlan was here last year, for example. To be honest, I was not familiar with many of the bands this year. But it was an all-acoustic show, and everyone was very talented. Side note: Originally The Killers were part of the lineup, and were replaced by Arcade Fire, due to a member of the original band being unavailable- I think due to surgery? In any case, this is a super popular event- each day starts with a blessing of the stage, a welcoming speech from Pegi, and the first few artists begin to go on. The first few do 4-5 songs each, and bigger main acts do longer sets toward the evenings. Venue was very oversold this year, and even accounting for the cold and slightly rainy weather that might have kept some away, the lawn was packed and people were falling all over one another. Perhaps they should have cut back a little. To be fair, it was widely known that Saturday was sold out, so perhaps that increased attendance on Sunday as well. Highly recommend going- it's for a great cause, and it's a great experience. Lawn seats are inexpensive, but would spring for seats if you really enjoy a majority of the participating acts. I'll 2nd the motion on a totally GREAT concert experience! the Fourpack @ $100 = $25 a person ROCKS! = no parking fees, bring your lawnchair, your picnic food, blankets and for this event wet weather gear and you get to see some big names a la natural (acoustic) for 6 hours and all to support a school for severly disabled children. Organized By Neil Young and his wife, Pearl Jam was amazing, Billy Idol can still rock (Rebel Yell of course was all electric as it should be), Elvis Costello is still a damn fine musician and the Jam at the end when they all got up there-that made it well worth while!! It didn't rain much, the drinks are pricey but WTH, it was a great vibe, creat crowd and so much fun. Modest Mouse was not at thier best and the gain was up to high on the mix, Lucinda Williams didn't do much for me but to each thier own. It was great to see the school kids rockin, bobing thier heads and waving thier hands and to see the band members shake thier hands before leaving, really nice. The Sat show rocked and I think the bands mostly put out a little more as they knew the crowds were braving the rain, also to have the SF Giants win last nite was a big morale booster. It was a bit folksy but still fun. Wud have liked to see TBone Burnett, I WILL BE BACK! Let me also say a great concert for kids, for thier first concert, for a family concert. To have a concert where the focus is the kids (Bridge School) is really great for the young kids to see how we value them and to see so many other people of all ages enjoying the music and the mood! The Bridge School Benefit is a two day music event in which some pretty amazing bands come together to play to raise money for children with disabilities who attend the school. All the money raised from ticket sales goes directly to the school and ultimately the children. SO MUCH FUN! I wonder why we didn't go to the Bridge School Benefit the past few years! The line up was fantastic, it was awesome to hear such an amazing bunch of musicians on one night! The afternoon was a bit warm and sunny but fortunately we got there early enough to grab a good spot on the grass and were close enough to the sky bar. The food was the only let down so next year, I'm definitely packing a picnic basket! The fries tasted stale and the pizza had a weird taste. The music sort of made up for it but we left the concert famished! Also, keep in mind that it lasts almost 8-9 hours. Great event for a great cause! I'm going back next year for sure. read more

Bridge School Benefit Concert - a crowd of people sitting on the grass - Music Venues Near Me - Mountain View, California

Not sure how anyone could give the annual Bridge School Benefit concerts less than 5 stars. + First and foremost, the title says it all - it's a charity fundraiser for a local school who helps kids with physical impairments overcome life's obstacles. Great cause! + Neil Young curates a new lineup each and every year, one that's diverse and appealing enough to garner enough ticket sales to fill up Shoreline Amphitheater. + Performances are acoustic, which challenges most musicians to venture outside of their plugged in comfort zones. It also leads to memorable moments that a fan wouldn't necessarily get to experience outside of this venue. + Each act plays 3-4 songs, max, which allows for a long lineup both days. Sure, there are some bands you'd like to hear for an hour or two, but these folks are donating their time/making major detours in their schedule to be in Mountain View for this event. + Chill vibe from the crowd. Lots of families and "older" attendees make for a much more diverse crowd that one would witness at a traditional music fest, like Outside Lands or Treasure Island. + Full bottles of wine for sale at the concessions stand, which pours perfectly into a guitar shaped carafe. $48 for a decent Pinot? Sold! Thoroughly enjoyed my time this year. Sunday's weather wasn't ideal (cold, overcast, windy) and yes, it gets crowded. But if you bundle up, bring a blanket, snacks and good company, you can enjoy a few bands in the great outdoors. And, most importantly, supporting a local cause that makes a difference in our community. read more

In case you don't read far enough, my main point here is DON'T TAKE YOUR KIDS to this event. Eventually I'm going to have to break my 5 star review rule. This isn't really a 5 star event but I can justify the 5 stars because Heart was so good. Heart is always good. Go to any show where Heart is playing, and they will make up for everything else. Diana Krall was also wonderful. Fun. was really NOT fun... maybe they didn't have the proper band set? Elvis Costello played a repetitive song, badly. I really wanted to go because of him, and his performance was so disappointing. We went in 2013. I have no idea if the concert has changed since the big divorce. So, here's my issue with this school fundraiser. Let's say you're like me, a parent of teenagers and you've never been to an outdoor concert in Northern California (other places, but not here), and so maybe you're a bit naive about what goes on. You're thinking... it's a SCHOOL benefit concert, right? You're thinking, it's Sunday during the day, broad daylight. You're thinking they have these beach blanket style ticket packages, which seem ideal for a couple to take their kids and sit on the lawn. This is like a family event, right? WRONG!!!! So, it was bad enough that everyone, and I mean everyone, around us was toking up the whole time. Then, a trio of sociopathic twenty somethings decided to show up late and plop down six inches from the front of us... and of course, you know what they did. We had to leave. We were about half-way through the concert. You know, the whole time I was thinking... really... they have all those disabled kids sitting on the stage and they're watching the entire hillside of "adults" go up in smoke. Amazing. Just amazing. Superb. This is simply a superb event. ^ The sets range from somewhat different (what real fan wants to hear the same shit played over and over on each tour stop?) to completely unique, cover-filled setlists. ^ There are opportunities for on-stage collabs and believe me: they will happen. ^ The Killers will no-show. ^ The proceeds go to a charity for fucks sake. I do not believe I have felt any better about purchasing a regular, non-competitive, ducat to an event before in my life. There are some downsides: v Fellow concert-goers can get obnoxious as hell in the lawn area. v Fellow concert-goers can be as yuppish as they get in the assigned seating area. v It is too damn cold (is the Shoreline free at this time of year or something to make it worthwhile?) v They could get the stage changes and set-ups to go a lot faster (perhaps the rotating stage is needed here) Oh, and the festival could use some more Neil. Ive been going to this show for quite some time now. Not every year is stellar but it usually proves to be good. This last year I was enamored by Queens of the Stone Ages transformation into a lounge act. However Trent Reznor's composition for a string quartet maybe my all time favorite. The only drawback are the prices get higher every year and tickets tougher to get. As long as the lineups are interesting, you'll bet Ill keep trying to go. 4.5 stars read more

I know a lot of you will be butt-hurt about this review, but we have soooo many better run music shows in the Bay Area. A great charity, 100% true. Awesome lineup, 1000% true. But it's organized and run like a backwards a$$hole. This year it was about $44 (tix) + $15 (fees) = $60 dollars for lawn. What they don't tell you is that they over-sell the lawn like CRAZY. So unless you get there super early and stand in line like an apple fan-boy douchebag... you are sh!t out of luck on finding a place to sit OR stand. This is all because they let people bring chairs and blankets to "reserve" huge spots of the lawn. But they also don't create any rows in the law and that means everyone is climbing all over each other anytime they need to leave their "reserved blanket". Others will say, 'you should just plan ahead and get there early'... but they can bite a phat dick... most people don't like to show up when the doors open and wait in lines all evening. Literally, massive line for EVERYTHING. And for $60, I think it's fair to expect at least a little spot of lawn to sit on, no? It's a cluster, and it's also a massive F-YOU to the fans who shelled out $60. So I say F-YOU Neil, and your show. Obviously you make a lot more money for the charity by over-selling the lawn, but you also crap on the fan experience. read more

This was my second bridge school benefit concert and again I had a good time. Went on Saturday and enjoyed all the performers! It is for a good cause and they always have a great line up. I love that all the acts play acoustic so you get to hear them in a different way than you are used too. The crowd on Saturday was pretty chill. mix of a young and old crowd. Was told by a coworker who goes both nights every year that Sunday's crowd tends to be a lot older than Saturday's. I arrived at around 5ish (gates opened at 4) and had to wait in a ridiculously long line. It was the longest line ive ever been in at the shoreline to get into the venue. Luckily it was moving fairly quickly and took about 15-20 mins to get in. The lawn was the most crowded I had ever seen it. Note to self for next year, get there when gates open! The sound was okay it was a little hard to hear the performers. Probably Didn't help that the people behind me would not stop talking -_- concert was great, nothing special about the venue...i mean it is shoreline after all but that won't stop me from coming to this event again. read more

2016 Sunday concert. Free parking a short walk from the venue. Not too much traffic arriving after 1pm. Plenty of food, drink and other options available at concert prices. We were in the seated area for comfort. Excellent value, for $80 or so each we saw: Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, Cage The Elephant, My Morning Jacket, Willie Nelson and Nora Jones. There were more, but we had to leave. All performances were amazing and the whole thing is quite emotional for what it supports. Many of the children were on stage for the performances. Overall one of the best concerts I've been to and a very worthy cause. read more

This year was my first year at the Bridge School Benefit and I hope it won't be my last. I went on Saturday and really enjoyed Norah Jones, Eddie Vedder, Beck, Arcade Fire, Dave Matthews, Mumford & Sons, and, of course, Neil Young. I've been to many concerts at Shoreline in my life, but this was a much more positive experience. The audience was more diverse in terms of ages and subcultures than Coachella or some of the other music festivals in California. The sound quality was good. There was an earthy quality to the performances and the audience's response. None of it felt precious or overly hip, the way that Outside Lands can. Eddie Vedder in particular really is amazing. He started out with a bit of a fumble, but is so charming and has such great singing ability that he more than made up for it. And same for Mumford & Sons. Usually audio engineering improves a vocalist's sound, but in the case of this band, the live performance far outshone my cd. I think the popularity of this event is remarkable. Neil Young has been doing something really great. I don't know why it took me so long to get out here, since the amphitheater is practically in my backyard. Although it made for a packed lawn- drunk people stumbling up and down a giant lawn, trying to find their seats in the dark is a bit hazardous- it says something really nice that so many people come out and donate to kids that need it. read more

The benefit was a terrific way to showcase their school by having the students on stage being introduced by Pegi Young, who knew all their names! They also played videos in between sets of the school and students. These children have disabilities and Bridge School helps them get teh education they deserve with understanding and patience. One of the best concerts I have been to in a long time! The line-up was amazing! My absolute favorite was Foo Fighters! Dave Grohl was a sexy beast and they are amazing live! Mumford & Sons had great energy! Dave Matthews is ok - he can be obscure at times but with Tim Reynolds and Marcus Mumford was great! Tony Bennett had swagger - he won me over! I could go on.... I really enjoyed my time at this years BSB concert. I got to see a few bands that I've really wanted to see over the years, but just haven't. Eddie Vedder, Santana and the Foo Fighters are at the top of that list. We also saw Norah Jones, Tony Bennett, Beck, Dave Mathews, Neil Young and Arcade Fire at the 2011 show. I personally thought Mumford & Sons stole the show. I had only heard their album twice before seeing them - but they had the crowd really involved and got me hooked! I've since bought their album and highly recommend it. Not a huge fan of Shoreline - but they have cool policies in place. They let you bring in seats, food, water, etc. Just no glass or cans. Parking cost was also included in ticket price. Last suggestion, get there early. People walking in 2 hours late and being shocked by the fact that there was nowhere to sit was hilarious to watch. read more

Wow. So hard to write a harsh review of such a great intention and wonderful performance. But the truth must be told. The really, really BIG problem with this wonderful, worthy event is the VENUE. It is horribly disturbing to be forced, because I want to support the goals of The Bridge School, to submit to the corporate banal profit protecting policies of The Shoreline Amphitheater. Lawn seats have been cost neutral all the years I have attended. This year they created a separate line. For five bucks more, you could completetly screw everyone who arrived hours before you and sat on the concrete. It never occurred to me to look for such a scam when I bought my tickets for what I thought was a progressive liberal cause/event/business. It never occured to me when I bought my ticket that I needed check to see if I could pay a few bucks more to screw everyone who planned to sit on the sidewalk for an hours, create new friendships, and demonstrate our willingness to sacrifice some time and comfort to get a good seat. Pay 5 bucks more and just skip to the front of the line????? Unfair and uncool. Shame on BSBC for signing off on that. I hope you are teaching those poor kids better ethics than that, even when you don't practice them yourself. Shame on you for your profit grabbing policies. Then there was the insane policy of prohibiting all access to and from the lawn to the lower level. The entire lawn, 3/4 of the audience, was forbidden from accessing the steps that were built into the facility to allow access to and from. I asked why, and listened to many others asking for a justification. The most common answer the poor guards (who were obviously trained to respond so) was.... "We are sold out and we need to be sure non-ticketed people are not getting into the ticketed seats." Really. Why not, then, post a guard at every entrance to the ticket seats to prevent illegal entry? Instead of requiring 3/4 of the entire audience to walk uphill through a packed crowd, without aisles, and along half of the perimeter of the site to use the bathroom or buy food or drink? Really? This is your best plan? This actually penalizes those same folks (me and mine) that thought is was worth the 2 hour wait on the cement to get a good seat. The guards manning the chains across the exits 3 feet from us forced us to trek uphill, over blanket after blanket, excusing myself to understandably irritated fellow concert-goers, all the way to the top of the lawn, then to left or right to pee, or all the way down to the concourse for a cocktail. It took me 40 uncomfortable minutes, in the middle of the show, to get a ($20.00) cocktail. Who, in the whole freakin world, at the board of the Bridge School, thought this would be acceptable or tolerable as a concert experience? Neil? Peggy? Someone needs to make this experience better. The kids deserve that. And so do the attendees. My heart is broken tonight to know that the righteous charity I thought I thought I was supporting and would very much like to support still, is instead, in the control of this rip-off corporate stadium. I guess that might reap the most money for the kids they help, but it teaches a greedy and cynical lesson too. Too bad. read more

The GOOD: - Fantastic program and fundraiser for a very worthy benefit cause. Neil & Pegi Young have been incredible in their dedication to the Bridge School and organizing this amazing event for past 27 years. This was our second Bridge Benefit. - Amazing lineup of artists: Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Queens of Stone Age, Tom Waits, CSNY. Tom Waits knocked it completely out of the park. The BAD: - The lawn was crowded without a doubt. We lucked out with a pretty good center spot, but it was very hard to see the stage.... mostly we were watching monitors. - Crowd control on the lawn and bathroom access. The line was a mile long, and another mile walk to the lower level to the next bathroom line. - Too much fundraising talk. Yeah we get it, you're raising money for a worthy cause but... enough with the donate now requests, buy raffle tickets, buy posters, send checks, help us with lifetime endowment, etc. etc. etc. I already spent $150 for a couple of tickets (not to mention $50 on a couple of beers at $12 a pop). The UGLY: - The set changes were insanely slow. I couldn't believe toward the end that the crowd wasn't getting more irate. The last 3 acts (Queens of Stone Age, Tom Waits, CSNY) spent more time on the set changes than actual performance time. - CSNY took a ridiculously long time to come out. Felt like at least 30 minutes. The wind was howling and it was F*CKING FREEZING by that time. They finally started their set around 10:00, and we left after a couple songs. - Final indignity - David Crosby said from the stage: "Hey, it's COLD up here!". So sorry, David. While you were sitting in the green room keeping us waiting, I lost feeling in my toes. read more

I love the music and that proceeds benefit such a wonderful cause--BUT--THE LAWN WAS RIDICULOUS THIS YEAR!!!!! Waaaayyyy oversold--it felt very unsafe not to mention EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Climbing over hundreds of people packed shoulder to shoulder just to get to the bathroom. Shoreline needs to enforce some kind of aisle ways on the lawn just for safety. God forbid that a pour soul has some kind of emergency. I love the Bridge School Benefit but will never go again unless I can by some miracle score seat tickets!! :( read more

Best value in show biz. Some astounding performances. Good amplified sound even way up on the grass. Elvis Costello will be there October 26 and 27. He will pack em in. I've been going for a decade. For me the best performance was a reunion of The Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young, Richey Furay and a kinda burnt but still still rockin Steven Stills. I never liked Billy Idol but his live performance of White Wedding changed my opinion. Tracy Chapman delivered a high impact performance. Tony Bennett still has it. This years line-up was beyond my wildest expectations...you had a full Coachella weekend of headliners and main stage openers come out back to back to back in 8-9 hours. Arcade Fire, Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters, Tony Bennett, Beck, Mumford = shocking. The Foo's performance of My Hero was the best I have ever heard. Dave and Tim were on point! I have been to every BSBC since 2001 (except for 2010). This year's concert (25th anniv) was amazing--I went both days as usual. This year, the event was sold out for both days! Shoreline was packed with 22k ppl and beautiful weather on both days made for the best of times! if you've not been to a BSBC before, go to the next one in Oct of 2012. Norah Jones was a surprise to me as I hadn't heard that she was replacing Diana Krall or that Jenny Lewis was out. While waiting in line, the rumor was that the Jimmy Fallon was supposed to emcee, but he never showed. As always, those performing at the show did not fail to deliver incredible performances! Neil came out on stage to perform one song with a few groups each day. It was fun to see him out there, but since he performed with other acts, his set list was shorter. He also didn't close with the usual, "Rockin' in The Free World" either day. The Foo Fighters were incendiary! Tim Reynolds was powerful and gave eargasm after eargasm with DM--while DM & NY played a version of "Oh, Susannah" that was so totally different from anything anyone else played that night--the performance would not be matched by any act that night or the next. I have been making the trip every year since 2010. I cried tears of joy to hear buffalo Springfield on stage again! I hope it never ends...

I have been going to this concert for many years and have been to this venue dozens of times. I like the venue very much and the music is always great, but last nights event (2013) was pretty bad. Over sold, as this particular concert usually is, so the lawn area was packed (we expect this, so in and of itself, not an issue), BUT no walk way in or out! They closed off the walkway between the lawn and designated seating (this made no sense and really infuriated people as there was a perfectly good walkway that they would not let anyone use. So the only way in or out if you are on the lawn is to climb over thousands of people. SO BAD! It was not only a horrible distraction it is really unsafe. All night I was worrying about the parade of people crawling over us and there safety. Even sober, people were struggling to navigate (in the dark no less) the incline of the lawn, all the people, chairs, blankets, coolers, etc. I would recommend sitting on the outer edge and be prepared to be distracted the entire time by people negotiating there way to restrooms, food, beer and merch. read more

I had lawn seats. Be aware that you are not allowed to bring "chairs with legs" even if they have short legs. Only chairs with the bar on the bottom are allowed. I'm going to sit on the ground for 10 hours? No place on the web site does it mention this. It was packed 2 hrs before the show. Not possible to see the stage at all so show is watched entirely on the screens. People constantly walking back and forth spilling beer. There is no walkway available for folks to get to there lawn areas. The only good part was the sounds system which is excellent. I would never go again without a reserved seat which is impossible to get. I know it's for a very good cause. I came home and watched the live webcast which was fantastic. Next time I'll watch that in the comfort of my home and send in a donation. FYI supposed to be no smoking but tons of people smoking with no consequence. read more

The lawn was oversold. We got there on time, so had a space with our blanket way up toward the top of the hill, but we were penned in - good luck getting to or from our spot of 8+ hours without stepping on and tripping over other people. Half the people around us were smoking pot, while the other half had their toddlers with them, which made for a strange mix. Dave Matthews and Roger Waters didn't sing any of their signature songs, and Metallica only one - I kept repeating,"I don't know this song." Oh yeah, and people all around talking loudly during the performances practically drowning out the music, which was not amplified that loudly. Will not be back unless there is "bucket list" performer that I absolutely must see. read more
