Actually I changed my mind, it's more of a 2 stars than a 4 stars. Vodka cranberry was so strong and I couldn't even finish it. Even when it's just the 3 of us sitting at the bar, it was kinda hard to get the bartenders attention. I could be loud if that would have helped? There is a reason why it's not as busy. Service was not the greatest. Just bare minimum. Not my fave dive bar. Only went here because my friend wanted a drink. I like O Malleys more so we went there after our 1 drink. read more

Uncomfortable and catering to regulars. If you re by chance not a regular the women bartender is very rude and angry. It's very sad as it is the only 2 of 2 bars closest to palo alto so now restricted to just 1. Wouldn't recommend. But would recommend omalleys. read more

I absolutely love Fred's - a dive bar in Palo Alto good to visit over the weekends. Cheap drinks, good bartenders. Usually get peanuts or polish sausage hot dogs. They have pool and darts and more formal seating but it's most fun to sit at the bar. It's a Great informal dive bar playing sports on the TV screens. Always fun to be there! read more

Been here a few times. I live on the other side of town, so it's not my local. That said, Fred's is a quintessential dive bar right on the Mountain View/Palo Alto border. To be clear: Fred's is unpretentious. Ambiance is high. Pool table, juke box, Giants and 49ers paraphernalia... TVs to watch your games; everything you really need. Bartenders have always been friendly and provided prompt service (making your order at the bar is required). Great place to catch a game, forget about life for a while, have fun with friends, or have a little hair of the dog from the night before. In my opinion, the best feature is the Spaten on tap that is also served in the proper glasses. From my 3-star rating system: Serivce: *** They get you your drink as quickly as they can! Food: N/A Dive bar without proper food service. There are snacks and some food items to be had. I have not tried them. Drink up! Drink: *** Spaten on tap in proper glassware...details matter! Hands down the best bar in town! The staff is amazing and the drinks are always on point, and I've seriously tried them all! I love dive bars and the atmosphere in this place nails it. Shout out to my main bartenders when I'm there... Amber, Sarah, and Red! Amber for her amazingly cool and no nonsense approach to taking care of her customers. Sarah for her fun and super friendly attitude towards everyone. And Red for his energetic and welcoming vibe to all who walk in. He always has a cool story to tell and/or hilarious joke. This place is a NO -GO and the service was terrible. It was the only place open on a Sunday late night. Me and my buddies when there for a beer after a long day of work. We got there and the woman bartender was rude. When I went to pay, she gave my CC to someone else and was very rude about it when I called it out. She basically didn't care. Also, she told me they would not charge me for what I ordered. I called my bank to cancel the card and not only she charged me for what I ordered but charged my card with someone else's drink. I actually like dive bars. Character filled places filled with character and characters. I've been here once with coworkers and once with my significant other. It's a bit rough on the edges. No windows, of course, but you can sit under a tent out back. The main problem I have with the place is the preponderance of smokers. It smells like smoking. And a few were actively smoking in the doorway both times I was there. I'd like to give it another chance when maybe younger people are there for their karaoke night. read more

Don't make the same mistake I made: I've lived in this neighborhood for decades before finally visiting Fred's Place. Why did I wait so long? The moment I stepped in, it felt like I've been there before: the bar I used to frequent after swing shift back in Florida with the spacecraft technicians; the cool den where maybe we deejayed a party for a friend of a friend back in high school; the mellow neighborhood bar anywhere on any business trip, but maybe not in the middle of Silicon Valley, except that (I'm making this up, or just guessing) Fred's was here long before Hewlett and Packard. Friendly bartender, very reasonably priced drinks, bar food, pool table, electro-darts and a digital jukebox, handmade signs on neon poster boards. So mellow (at least after an early weekend dinner) and laid back that you really could just hang out here for as long as you wanted to. read more

Fred's was fine the first couple times I went. The place has amusing diversions like pool/darts/pinball, the bartenders were nice to me, and the patrons seemed like a bunch of chill locals having a good time. But then I came on karaoke night. After I'd sung two songs, their KJ (Brian James) just exploded at me, shouting "WHAT'S THE MATTER MAN, YOU DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY???", full scowl on display, while aggressively motioning to his tip jar. I thought he was kidding, but nope, he was dead serious. To be sure, I tip servers/barbers/drivers all the time, but this fool needs to get a couple things straight: 1. Tipping karaoke jockeys just isn't a universal expectation, and 2. The reason for that might have something to do with the fact that compared to, say, a bartender, KJs get 200% of the pay for doing 20% of the work. It takes all of eight seconds to mouse-click a song request into a karaoke app -- not exactly a backbreaking burden, especially when the 20,000 songs in your library are pirated. This guy can barely perform the basics of his job anyway, clueless about how to tune his mics or equalizer to make singers sound good. Even if none of that were true, of course, outlandishly rude behavior would still be out of line. I can't tell whether this guy's a racist or just an entitled prick, but either way, Fred's needs to set a higher bar for their hired help. read more

I know this is a dive bar and the regulars love it. That said, if you're a new person the manager/owner will go out of his way to make you feel unwelcome. They actively don't want new customers. It doesn't look much like a bar from the street; more like a vacuum repair shop. And the neighborhood is really odd: it's an older, industrial area tucked into a side pocket of northern Mountain View. But even though French is definitely not spoken here, Fred's does have a certain 'je nais se quoi' going for it. It has a reasonably good beer list, a good jukebox, strong drinks, and the prices are easy on the wallet. Plus the staff and most clientele are pretty laid back. There seem to be a lot of regulars here, so the place never feels too lonely and sad. But it is most definitely a dive. I've even gone so far as to bring my out-of-town customers and work associates here; and they freeking LOVE the place. Why? - I think it's a welcome change from all the pretentious spots on University Ave., the sterility of the hotel bars, and all those 'nice, upscale spots' found throughout Silicon valley. This is a place that's been here awhile; a place to go drink, let your hair down, and not be judged. Plus they have a pool table that isn't always in use - perfect for when you have a buzz going; maybe not so perfect when you've had too many. It's not all peaches and cream: -- Some of the beer taps are mislabeled - they don't always carry everything shown. -- Every time I order a Guinness and point to the tap, they go to the back and bring it back in 20 seconds (WTF?); Guinness done right should be a two-pour process and take a lot longer. -- Stay past 8 pm on a Friday and you'll see some seriously hammered people, and some sketchy clientele will begin to come out of the woodwork. This is a Hidden Gem dive bar with an excellent trivia night on Monday. The bartender's choice shots are fun and cheap. They make a different one every time you order and all three of the shots that I ordered were strong and tasty. Hopefully this place doesn't close down. One of the great neighborhood bars in Mountain View. Lot's of TV's playing ALL of the games. Drinks are good, prices are fair. Lot's of seating, both table and stools. Tons of parking in front and in back. Happy hour snacks! Friendly people everytime we walk through the door.
