My son 12 days…read moreout of rehab, 50 miles from home, failed a UA, the house manager kept it a secret with no consequences. According to his location, he did not leave the home on days 15-17. On day 17 someone, most likely in the home, gave my son a fatal dose of fentanyl. He laid on the cold hard floor of a bathroom (in-between two bedrooms SHARED BY ATLEAST 5-6 men) for more than 8 hours before anyone checked on him. Some said they heard a loud thud around 11pm. NO CHECk, Shower running 8 hours, NO CHECk, Not 1 man had to pee all night? No curfew, no bed checks, no house manager, no buddy system. After an opioid relapse- any one with even an ounce of addiction knowledge would know that the addict is going to be sick, fiending, struggling..Yes, I know they are grown men, but this place was suggested by the treatment center. No increased measures to protect the residents, no increased accountability, no immediate drop off at detox? So many missed opportunities to protect vulnerable residents. They knew my son was dead when they called me, but said "they were trying to revive him..He was purple,bloated and stiff when they found him. We jumped in the car to head that way, hoping to at least be at the hospital soon after the ambulance.. almost 2 hours and in the vicinity, I called to ask what hospital he was taken to.. it seemed so strange that there were no updates after so much time had passed. My entire life was shattered that morning 12/19/2024. IF your loved one goes to this place, they are at risk. And on top of that. They say they do not even have any insurance. If your loved one is hurt or injured by an unstable resident or even just an accident in the home, or the unfortunate way my baby was taken from me. They have ZERO liability coverage. I've hired 1 lawyer, and am about to hire a second..maybe even a third if I have to. This place needs to take accountability. At the very least, there should be measures put in place to prevent this from happening to another family. I think the biggest slap in the face was the leaders, standing there, looking me in the eyes and swearing, "THERE WERE NO RED FLAGS" '"WE HAD NO REASON TO SUSPECT ANYTHING WAS WRONG" " HE WENT TO BED EARLY, BY 10, INSTEAD OF STAYING UP WITH THE GUYS" These were all lies. He was dead by 11 pm. People were still up. 10 men in the house. 1 bathroom in the middle of two bedrooms with doors to each room, 3 men to a room? A failed UA just a few days prior? We all know there would have been slurring, nodding out, or other behavior changes that were obvious. My son lay there all alone on the cold, hard floor, dying. 53 days in rehab, 17 days at Cardinal House.

Once he checked in, for the most part (after a bit of settling in) things went well. The therapists and directors could not have been more frank, mostly kind & empathetic. We had our moments of disagreeing but always resolved issues. Some turnover in the house managers which I gather is to be expected due to the nature of the residents. It can't be easy managing teenagers to adult men in a house all living side by side with their addictions. Chapter House (aka sober living) literally saved my son's life. Seven years of hell with his addiction, jail, DWI & almost dying tripped something in his brain to get & stay sober. He went to SL kicking & screaming but in a few weeks he acclimated and did the work. There was a lot of work too. IOP, AA meetings, chores, therapy, getting a job, no outside contact...on & on but he did it. I know if he had not gone to SL he would not be here today & I am grateful for Chapter House & their honesty to not only us but my son. It's not for the faint hearted. Family must do their part financially & emotionally but in the end we have our son back and for that we are eternally grateful.

The first day he was transported to this facility someone from the staff stole his fanny pack with his wallet, cell phone, etc. When I get there the first day after work the night shift people blamed it on the day shift people. I go back to the day shift people and they play dumb that nobody knows anything. I filed a complaint with them but the fanny pack still doesn't turn up so I had to file a police report for theft. Once I filed the police report we had to get him out of there. Miraculously when my father was moved to another facility I get a call that they found the fanny pack. At that point I'm thinking everything is fine now. Well, the next day my Dad's bank account gets suspended for fraudulent charges. Someone literally took a joyride on the town. They had a fancy meal and an Uber ride before the card got shut down. I'm still looking for the perpetrator. Oh, and conveniently they don't have cameras there. Do your loved ones a favor and just STAY AWAY!!!!!

Positives: comfy bed, own room, own TV in room, fairly comfortable detox…read more Negatives: Scaring away someone in the midst of detoxing who had zero desire of leaving the facility in the first place - that's a first for me. I had zero intention of leaving. Here's what I did wrong. I snuck in some comfort meds. Why? Because I am an addict. I have trust issues and a bad past with a detox facility. I felt like shit for doing it, and I never ended up using anything I had. I won't rationalize any further. I know it was wrong and I felt horrible. I was extremely ashamed when I was caught; balled my eyes out... the whole 9 yards. The next morning I wake up startled, to 3 women at the foot of my bed doing the "tough guy" act while in the midst of detox. I had zero intention of leaving. Eventually, I couldn't take it, and I said alright I'm out. Deuces. They didn't even try to talk me out of it. Who knows? Maybe my insurance ran out and that was the way to get me to go (just kidding..) PS - I've been to a 20-30 detoxes with zero intent of getting clean. This was my first where I was actually proud of myself for completing my detox (5 days in without wanting to leave). Moral of the story? Not everyone needs the tough guy act. Some people are so down and out they just need compassion and honesty. Not some bull$hit tough guy act telling me over and over that I'm going to die and my daughter will not have a mother. We can be real without being intimidating. We can have real conversations without adding the theatrics. I would have appreciated that.
