This review is long overdue but I have nothing but great things to say about this place. They…read morereally do go above and beyond for their clients. I was in need of support for my daughter and had not yet heard of educational therapy. From the first phone call to each session, we are greeted with a smile and warm support. My daughter is always excited as she arrives and even when she leaves; which says a lot about them. Kevin and Nicole have been my contacts and they are both amazing and supportive. If you are in need of any educational support/assistance, this is the place to go.

First and foremost Kevin Bansley was the point of contact through all of my emails/dealings with South Bay educational therapy. Kevin offered us 1 date and time only to begin my son's therapy and unfortunately we were not able to accept due to our schedules. No big deal right? Scheduling didn't work out so we could just go our different ways and my family could attempt to find help elsewhere. Kevin Bansley had different intentions though. He stated that they were keeping the money(almost $5000) and no refund would be issued. After several back and forth emails, Kevin agreed to refund some of the money, but wanted to be compensated for the time/services that they did actually render, which we agreed upon. He stated "In regard to your request for a refund, I understand that your family's needs and expectations were not fully met, and I do not wish to create further challenges for your son. Therefore, I will be processing a refund for the services that were not rendered, excluding the two intake sessions, and an additional four hours allocated for diagnostics and extensive communication with Harbor Regional Center and your family. These hours reflect the considerable professional time and expertise dedicated to your son's case." Sounded great. That email was received August 21st 2024. Here it is November 12th 2024. Kevin has still not refunded the money and I honestly do not think he has any intention to do so. Do not be fooled. Kevin Bansley tries to put forth a mission of helping children and families but that is clearly not the case. He has cost my son the help he has needed all year by refusing to follow through with his own words. I implore any and all families thinking about using South Bay educational therapy to help their family to simply ask yourself. "Can my child afford to get the help they so desperately need taken from them? Is it worth the risk to trust this company?"

It…read moreoften shows up as anxiety, frustration, and even self-doubt, parents wondering if they're missing something or not advocating "correctly." Most just aren't given clear guidance on what to ask for or what their child is actually entitled to. What stands out to me about Rise is how parents are supported in really understanding what's happening and how to advocate in a way that feels realistic and manageable. Having a clear plan and next steps takes a process that can feel chaotic and makes it more actionable. Another strength working with Rise is that April has firsthand experience working within the school system, meaning she understands how things actually function behind the scenes and can guide families in a way that's well-informed and practical. If you're feeling stuck or unsure where to begin with the IEP and 504 process, Rise provides the kind of support that can help you feel more confident and less alone in navigating it.

April's file review was thorough and genuinely eye-opening, she helped us understand exactly where the IEP fell short and what questions we should be asking. She was warm, knowledgeable, and never made us feel rushed or judged for not knowing the system. Her insights gave us the clarity and confidence to take the next step in advocating for our family. We'd recommend Rise to any family navigating special education and feeling overwhelmed.

We've had two nieces graduate from Vistamar and our daughter is currently a junior. We have been…read morethrilled with the experience that all three kids have had at the school. The school has an excellent academic program. The curriculum was carefully researched and designed based on best-of-breed programs from private high schools and universities across the country. Classes are rigorous and the faculty is knowledgeable and very focused on the learning environment. We've observed how our daughter has quickly become comfortable seeking out her teachers when she has questions, attending office hours, and becoming a strong self-advocate. Great skills to have for both college and life. One of the most amazing things about the school is the strong culture that Vistamar has created. While the pressure of academics is part of the experience, much of it is neutralized by the strong sense of community and support across both faculty and students. It's an environment that has been really beneficial to our daughter, because it's one that encourages kids to take risks and try new things. She's discovered areas of passion that she may never have found had she not been at Vistamar. Again, something that we want our kids to find at this age so that they can have it for the rest of their lives. The school also does an excellent job bringing students together from different backgrounds and points of view and, through the culture they've created, enable them to build relationships and work together. Group learning and group activities are a big part of the learning culture which help develop skills that will last a long time. The actual school building can be a bit surprising when you look at it from the outside. It's much more of the converted-warehouse-tech-company sort of look than the green-campus-boarding-school. But step inside and watch how the kids work and interact with the environment. It's designed in a way where students and faculty are constantly interacting and creates a comfortable environment where you will often see students lingering well into the evening.

(My other daughter attended a different high school that was the perfect fit for her.) Vistamar is a unique and special school. Its most important characteristic is their intentionality. They have carefully thought through each part of a high school and made intentional choices to build a different and excellent small high school that allows each child to bring their individuality to school every day. The intentionality comes up in both large (why they offer Spanish and Chinese in their language program and require students to pass an oral proficiency language exam in order to graduate) and small (the temperature in the building) ways. You will not find a more enthusiastic and dedicated faculty. Their math program is incredibly strong that is joyfully brought to life by amazing teachers. Their high-level Humanities curriculum requires engagement with great and challenging literature like The Odyssey. My daughter, who wants to be a doctor, has taken advantage of the robust science offerings. All of this is wrapped by two key principals: (a) small class sizes that allow the faculty to know your student and (b) the idea that "there are no spectators" in learning. Your students will be challenged and engaged. As for extracurricular activities, this small school has a number of great opportunities for students. On their sports program, you are not going to have Friday Night Lights football. But what I appreciate about their program is that students are encouraged to try new activities. They have a "no cut" policy when it comes to sports. Their program is built to inspire students to build good, long-term, healthy lifestyle habits and find opportunities to go outside their comfort zone, as well as make new friends. On college prep, the school has built a system that prepares students to be successful in college, while not making the students feel pressurized by the college application process. The school does not want to have students focus their entire high school time on getting into college. The counseling team works closely with each student to ensure that they get into the college that is the best fit for them. As someone who has worked in education for most of my career and as someone who has seen the joy in my daughter's eyes when she talks about her school, I cannot recommend this excellent and innovative high school strongly enough.

Chloe was always responsive and really pushed for the evaluation to be reviewed in its entirety. During my son's IEP meeting, Chloe stood-up for my son in a way that brought tears to my eyes. It is rare to find people who are as dedicated to their profession, but that also genuinely care about the population that they serve. Because of her dedication and support during the IEP process, I decided to have my son attend speech therapy with Language and Literacy Group--even though we live far away, and our insurance does not cover these services. In the 3.5 months that my son has been attending therapy with Chloe and Molly, he has made noticeable progress in the way he expresses himself and his desire to communicate more with peers and his family. I will forever be grateful for their support and for being a part of my son's development and growth.
