First, my main reason for checking out Bright Oaks Meat was suet for making bird suet cakes. I had called ahead, and their price was great. I drove quite a few miles round trip, and picked up 10 pounds. As I melted it in a large stockpot, I noticed a great deal of it wasn't rendering at all, but remained in somewhat translucent fat chunks. There was a good gallon of residue and only 3 quarts of rendered suet, a ridiculous ratio. I also discovered that it wouldn't harden, as suet normally does, but remained fairly soft, not usable at all. I called them, and found that there is not only the hard kidney fat (the good stuff) but they also throw in random fat scraps from elsewhere on the critter. I think the majority of the 10 pounds was "elsewhere." Therefore, IMO, it definitely shouldn't be called "suet." I was told that they deal in such quantity that it can't be sorted out. That may be the key word here -- "quantity," as opposed to "quality." Also, when I came in there seemed to be a total lack of interest in helping me, an elderly female using a cane, employees standing there chatting, saw me standing there, and continued chatting. Eventually I was helped. I see, when writing this review, that it wants me to write about "ambiance." Okay: To put it bluntly, the ambiance sucked. The meat case was weird too, and 98% empty, with a few lone packages and nothing else. I'll stick with Long's, paying a bit more for the suet, but theirs is superb, fresh, the real deal, and the customer service is outstanding. And the meat case is always full of every cut of beef, pork, or chicken you can imagine, and some you've never heard of! Plus their freezer is chock full of a multitude of exotic choices. It amazes me that I've spent years upon years going to this business and never wrote a review! I can remember when it was on Mill St, near A St, and going in with my parents many times. I love good, old-fashioned, local business, and this is it! They have amazing beef jerky, in a plethora of flavors, and they are happy to give samples. The customer service has always been excellent, and I have never had a complaint or a bad experience. They have a dingy looking convenience store as part of the shop, but don't let the ugly appearance fool you or dissuade you from stopping in. They have quite the selection of meats as well, from standard/basic to exotic. Parking is a bit annoying, as it's a small lot, and gets a little tricky if they are busy. They get extremely busy at lunch time, as there is an alternative high school across the street. So avoid it if you see a bunch of purple haired freaks hanging out there, just because it'll be busy. Other than the weirdos from across the street, it's a great place. Will I return? Of course! It's a fantastic local business that's been around for many, many years, and I will definitely keep coming back. Just avoid it at lunch time. read more

I am so appalled at the utter and complete lack of custoner sevice. Not only do you not reply to emails, as I sent a contact request several days ago with no response, but your service, or lack thereof, over the phone is atrocious. I am disabled. I physically cannot get into your shop. I just had a freezer delivered and would like to fill it. I don't know exactly what I want to fill it with, so I asked for prices and/or pack options. The person who answered was very curt to the point of rude, and even after i explained my situation, she rattled off the 21 lb package so fast I couldn't write it down. I told her I couldn't write that fast, but she was just rude and it didn't bother her one bit to lose a customer. Definitely not what I expected from the "family business" claimed on the website. I have been coming to this little ma and pa place for quite some time for their local, fresh meat and jerky. They have so many different choices and cuts of meat to choose from. Bison, frog legs, goose, lamb, alligator? I wouldnt even know how to cook most of these things but its all here if you know what to do with it. Imagine if your favorite corner convenience store, Fred Meyer meat department, and local Chocolate shop had a baby (huh?)- you will be better prepared not to dismiss this place outright. Looks sort of dingy and might even have exposed cement floors. Just keep telling yourself that awesome culinary treasures await anxiously for you to purchase and consume them- or just ask to try a tiny piece of their jerky and you should be sold. Pop in and you will see their small cold case at the right side of the store filled with some great looking beef (owners of the place also own a processing plant so it is all from local cows) along with some pork cutlets and bacon. If you look to the far side of the store, you will see a giant frozen case filled with every animal (many broken down into traditional cuts and flash frozen). They have all the holy trinity (beef, pork, and chicken), along with bison, alligator, rabbit, lamb, goose, frog legs, and more. If you ever been eyeballing any of those exotic recipes in your favorite cookbooks, but have passed because you couldn't find the protein- look no further. Another major sticking point- their beef jery is amazing. Some of the best I have ever had (and it's something I eat on a regular basis). Most people don't realize it, but the vast majority of beef jerky sold in stores contains monosodium glutemate, better known by it's acronym-MSG. That is right, look at the ingredient list on your go-to brand and prepare to be shocked. Bright Oak's jerky is MSG free, probably because it isn't sitting in individual vaccuum sealed packages, and is intended to be eaten now instead of after the nuclear holocaust in 50 years. Pack your jacklinks, oberto, and all those other ubiquitous gas station brands in your bomb shelter or basement in prep for the end of the world, and go out and eat some Bright Oaks jerky in the present.. 13.99/lb might seem like a steep price- but look at how much you get for that lb in the photos. Those are standard clear restaurant quart containers the jerky is sitting in (and those photos were taken after I had shared some with my roommate already) Their prices are even competitve with the major retailers- but Bright Oak's meat's quality I'd wage is dramatically better. And since it's within walking distance from my new place- I have found my new favorite carnivore toy store. read more

Because your prices are outrageous unless it's the 4th of July and I would like to eat steak during the other months of the year as well! I've found someone new. Who you ask? Bright Oak Meats! That's who! They not only provide locally sourced beef that is hormone free, grass fed and grain fed the last 6 weeks, but they do it at a fraction of the cost!! So why in the world would I pay WAY more for a steak that's nowhere in comparison to the quality that you offer? I know, I know, you're always willing to cut the meat to my exact specifications, well guess what! So are they! Not everything sold here is local, free-range, antibiotic, and hormone free, but they have a decent selection of meats that are. Big bags of ground chicken meat/bones for only $3 sold as pet food, which is way less than a place like Market of Choice. Tried their biscuits and gravy on a whim. Was surprisingly good and has to be one of the best value meals in Eugene/Springfield, if you don't mind self serve and an "interesting" ambiance. I have been there twice. First time was awesome quality and service. This last time was on Wednesday this last week. There was a sign up saying they would wrap any meat as long was half pound or more. So I ordered 10 # of hamburger wrapped in half pound pkgs. They refused to do this. There was 4 people working. So I asked if they could wrap 1# pkgs also refused. They put 10 # of hamburger in a plastic bag and gave it to me. I am retired and I had driven from Florence or to buy meat. I will never go there again. You get penalized for buying more than 1 pound. Who in their right mind does this? I wonder if the owner knows what's going on. Best place to get local farm raised beef on the cheap. Their jerky is the best and I wont buy it anywhere else. I get my dog her raw food here. The price can't be beat. Sometimes they are out of the organ mix that my dog likes though, if you are travelling to get there call ahead to see what they have. The staff is very attentive and friendly. A real, local butcher shop with amazing local product at bargain prices. Their jerky is yummy, but the ground beef is like a buck cheaper than anywhere else in town and BETTER. These butchers can cut you a 3-inch Porterhouse if you want, or my favorite teres major steak, or a brace of rabbits or hell, alligator if you want it. The front of the store kind of doesn't match the back -- it looks like your typical convenience store with the usual drinks, ice, and snacks. One of the butchers also told me that more than 3/4 of the store's sales are paid for with SNAP benefits, but whatever product lines they need to sell, paid for in whatever fashion, in order to keep this beautiful butcher shop afloat, I'm all for it. Do not let the lackluster appearance of this place stop you from visiting. All of their fresh cut meats are locally and sustainably sourced. Beyond the fresh case, you can find awesome, affordable beef boxes and a wide variety of different meats available. An example could include, but not limited to rabbit, gator, or kangaroo. The home made beef jerky is always delicious and I have continually found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Tip: if possible, you might want to try and avoid shopping during highschool lunch hours because it can get packed. Oh and there's also a little candy store inside with quite a sweet, eclectic variety. I've never been disappointed. I highly recommend checking out this lil' local diamond in the rough. read more

Really torn in writing this review; but have to be as honest as possible. We purchased a frozen box of meat from Bright Oak ($130 was an o.k. price for 30 pounds of beef). The staff was super friendly (they get the majority of the rating here; 3 stars for them and zero for the meat); but unfortunately the meat was tasteless and bland. No matter how many spices we added to the ground beef, it sill tasted flat. cooked a roast, my wife actually spit it out due to the taste. Maybe a bad box? Who knows. Like I said, it pains me to say this due to the fact the staff being as nice a they can be, but the product falls WAY below expectations. read more

One of my favorite downtown stores. They have anykind of meat you can think of. They also have really good jerky and also if you want a special cut of meat thell do it. They also sell regular stuff beer, wine energy drinks, sodas and candy they also sell deli stuff like hot burritos and corndogs. The people that work there are always happy and fun to talk with, my kids love it there and the staff always make them feel welcome. I wish there were more stores like this around! Your service will depend on who's in the store, at any given time. Which is usually BAD. I've known this business since they were on Mill Street, a good 20+ years ago. Not only are they're prices even more outrageous than 7/11s prices, but the Customer Service is Appauling. The guys at the actual MEAT COUNTER, claim that this store has NEVER EVER had Deer Meat. And i repeat the quote they made to me: "EVER". I hate that if you walking in on Wednesday, the guy says "There's no such thing as Venison here. It's NEVER been sold here". Then you walk in on Thursday, and the guys says "We Ran out of Venison YESTERDAY". Seriously!?!?? read more
