My grandpa would sometimes go to the butcher but my mom never shopped at one, so I hadn't been familiar with Longs. It's my sister's favorite butcher shop though, and when I'm going to make a pot roast I want to use the best meat, so we stopped by here. It was larger and more spacious than a lot of butchers which I appreciated--often they're super crowded. The area where you enter has a nice selection of cheese and wines as well as some other foods. The staff was friendly and helpful. ETA: Today when I started to make my pot roast, imagine my surprise when I found that I had two chuck steaks... not really super conducive to pot roast, and a little annoying since I asked for chuck roast. I've been to other butchers and asked for chuck roast and never been given bone-in chuck steak. This isn't something I could use because it wouldn't fit into the pot and I couldn't cut it with the bone in, so I had to go buy another $40 of meat at Albertson's. Not sure that I'll be returning to Long's. Hope my sister can use the meat so it won't be a total waste of the $30 I spent here. read more

Consistently tasty for lunch sandwiches and BBQ. We are from Alabama and don't eat BBQ in Oregon because it's usually very blah, but even my AL in laws were impressed with these BBQ meals. Shopping here while Black is quite an experience. I've been here on multiple occasions and always seem to be skipped over while waiting for service. It's happened nearly every time I've gone in. I purchased a whole pig for kahlua pork BBQ. This is our second pig I've ordered through Long's. I talked with one of the butchers when ordering. He told me the usual source for whole hogs had dried up and an alternate source was being used. I was told the price went up considerably, and would be around $700.00, depending on exact weight, for a 150-160 lb hog. This is about a 22% increase over last year's $573.80 pig of similar weight. I reluctantly paid the $100.00 deposit to start the order. I was greatly dismayed to see the pig cost escalate to $811.00 for the 148 lb hog when picked up 7/3. I was given no warning of this additional cost. This makes a 41% increase from last year's slightly heavier pig. This is a ridiculous increase. And I don't agree with the increased cost due to it being a whole pig. I've been cooking kahlua pigs for 35 years. Scalding and shaving is an automated process in a machine. There is far less handling compared to fully slaughtered and butchered pork. I can buy shoulders for about $2.00/lb on sale. Compare to $5.79/lb. for this year's pig. The manager ? (no name given in the Email) responded they were issuing a $100.00 refund. I AM grateful for the refund, but the whole idea of large unannounced cost increases, regardless of the reason, is a bad business practice. I don't do this to my customers, and I expect it to not be done to me. I will not buy another pig from Long's unless they give me a WRITTEN quote for the price at the time of deposit. If it needs to be padded to cover potential price increases, so be it. Nobody like surprises like the one I received. read more

I have been searching online for a good butcher in Eugene/Springfield for a Father's Day gift. I walked in and looked around. At first glance, it's fully fleshed out organizationally. The reviews were great! I was excited and curious to see what package to get for my father-in-law. As I wait and think of what to get, the man at the counter stands there. I step up to inquire about what the website offers. I ask which package might work best for me, "I don't know what to get, what is your favorite package that you sell here (bronze, silver, platinum, etc)?" He responds dryly, rudely, and it gets nowhere. "It's a bunch of different cuts. We won't get another order ready till ___" I reply, "I understand, I just am curious to know what kind of people come in for whatever packages." I just want to know more about the large sum of money I am about to spend on a gift card. "The cuts are all different, I don't know" he gestures with his eyes wide and body language slouched. As if it inconvenienced him, THAT much, to ask. I tell him I will find somewhere else. This guy must be fun at parties... Regardless, it is clean, the meat looks good, and I'm sure some people provide good customer service. I'm also sure the guys in the back are working their butts off. Just not this guy. I am certainly not coming back just because I'm a stubborn fart. I hope he is doing alright in his misery, 2 stars for the business... probs would give them a 5 if he wasn't so nasty. What a find! We stumbled across Long's as we passed through Eugene. We wanted a great sandwich for lunch, and Long's delivered! The ham and cheese sandwich was, quite possibly, the best I've ever had. Service was friendly and efficient. Since we were flying out, we couldn't take any meats or other items, but it looked like they offer a variety of high quality meats, wines and more. The staff all except one or two are just rude to customers, I've gotten feed back from friends and family that concur. I ordered some short ribs 6 full bones, and the guy working was de-boning them for about an hour, it was a very hot day, the meat was sitting in a warm room getting warmer while I waited. By the time I got home they had began growing bacteria and turning Grey oozing out blood and slime, turning brown and letting off a rotten and sour meat smell. I returned them and was replaced with just the worst pieces when I paid for center Cutts. Cheap pieces used for grinding chuck. They also don't have any ice to pack your expensive meat with. Also a money saver I bet. I've never seen a butcher shop with no ice. Safeway has free ice at the counter. Also they are always out of stuff. Never seen them have lamb kidney, partially deboned quail, or a decent ribeye. No waygu, no elk, maybe frozen but it lowers the quality every freeze and refreeze. Never coming back. Never going back again. After 6 yrs of loyal support for this business, I will no longer patron them again! They've gone from being nice, professional and a friendly place to shop to being rude, unaccommodating and getting our order WRONG (on purpose). A month ago I was out getting items to make a pulled pork. I wanted some of Long's rub. I called them and asked if they had any and they replied yes. I asked if I could pick up a container and since I cannot cut off my oxygen to go in their store I asked if they could just bring it out to me and I'll pay cash. The person rudely said "You'll have to place your order 24 hrs in advance to get curbside service." REALLY????? That's making an accommodation for someone who doesn't need to and can't cut off my oxygen to buy a stupid container of pork rub? I've been ordering Boars Head low sodium boiled ham for over 2 yrs asking to have it shaved. It takes longer but they used to care about making their customers happy. Not anymore. My husband took the list I made and they seemed to be unhappy with the face mask he was wearing and told him not to wear it the next time he came back to shop. Well, that was the last time! Wow! I'm really happy I found this place. Was looking for a sandwich place around here and this place was recommended to me. I went in and order the pastrami sandwich with pickles added and potato salad. The men taking orders and making sandwiches were very nice and kind to everyone inside. Finally made it in here! I've had countless people tell me to check this place out, and absolutely was not disappointed. Will be back again and again. Was busier than I was expecting, but how can you complain about a place being so good people fill it? Wonderful selection both common meats and eclectic, food all looks amazing and fresh, prices are very reasonable for whatever you're in the mood for, and condiments and pickled things and wine are all high quality and abundant. We went because my son's birthday weekend with his dad was decimated by Covid last minute (dad lives in WA, no worries, we weren't spreading plague). He's a foodie so we were scrambling to cheer him up. We popped in on a whim and were immediately impressed for all the reasons listed above. I mean the bacon alone... but I think my favorite part as the folks behind the counter were going at a mad hustle to accommodate everyone who walked in the door, was that no matter what my son asked, he was answered with respect and patience. Need a meat-packed lunch (or good deli/butcher)? EAT. HERE. (and shop here). This is a hidden gem in the Eugene lunch scene. Yes, it's in south Eugene, near 29th & Willamette, but it is worth it and they have their own parking lot with plenty of space. LUNCH: BBQ Brisket & BBQ pulled pork. 1 meat serving - $6.99 2 meats servings (with two sides) -$9.99 Get one of each meat (or two of one) and then pick between coleslaw (meh), barbecue coleslaw (tasty, spicy), baked beans (I usually pick this to be both my sides! It has chunks of meat in it!!!), mac & cheese (new, but so popular it's been out every time I got there). Another plus, if there's any left, they'll serve lunch until the deli closes at ~5pm. Tonight I picked up a big box around 4pm and had it for dinner (and lunch tomorrow!!!) Also, they're a great butchery and deli. Deli Example: They have genuine Italian Speck, an Italian/Triolean delicacy and delight similar to prosciutto but firmer and with a touch more seasoning. They also have an EXTENSIVE cheese collection with proper Blue Stilton and other delights of varieties unknown to me (for now...). The standard deli's meats/cheeses are Boar's Head brand, which I think is of excellent quality. Butchery example: It is great but I haven't been as thorough in my exploration. My only concern would be that you are paying more... Of course, you're paying more than grocery stores for the quality you'd pay 4-6x more at a restaurant! Want a filet minion or T-Bone for you and your grill: come here! It will be as good or better than a restaurant (and if it isn't, just buy yourself some blue cheese and butter, you're not interested in the meat flavor anyways.) Hold on though! Don't bother wasting this good butcher's stuff on a bunch of BBQ guests who don't appreciate really good steaks! Feed them sausages and dogs... From here! --- Also, beer and kombucha on tap. The beer is way overpriced, $14 for an Oakshire growler. I assume the Kombucha is as well. --- Finally, the service is friendly and excellent. There can be a short wait when things get busy, but surprisingly this is unusual. Of course, really, I don't care. Carnegie Deli in BYC may be gone, but they sell their peppery pastrami at Long's. Good beef jerky, though selection is smaller. My only complaint is the same one I have for many Eugene businesses early closing (for me) . A 6pm closing on a summer Saturday is a bummer. Shut completely on Sunday. read more

Absolutely not! I've been going here for years. Today I was talked into a ribeye that supposedly just had the fat trimmed away from the outside but when I went to season it at home I found that it had been butchered and I do mean butchered... They butchered it so bad that they had to tie a string around it just to hold it together to all the "other" fat that they left. My steaks are not steaks they are mangled pieces of steak held together by string! When I called the manager he actually was very rude and asked me why I would pick out a steak that was like those steaks because they were so bad that they had to cut the fat out of the center of them. I explained that I hadn't paid attention but I was told that they had only trimmed off some of the fat from the outside. Which was absolutely a lie. I told Ken what had happened and that I had been misinformed and he didn't care so then I asked Ken the manager why in the world I would I buy a mutilated steak for the same price of an awesome steak sitting right in front of it and he said "well I don't know why you would do that, you tell me"... well Ken I will never do that again! I've been going to Longs since 1999 and have always loved it. Very knowledgable staff, efficient, attention to detail. But some time over the last six months or so, I noticed a near-complete change in their staff. Now it's like watching a sinking ship, the new staff is bumbling. I watched one of their people ruining a lamb carcass, it was tragic. I nearly offered to help. They now consistently get my order wrong or overcharge.
