However, our experience with the actual care was very disappointing. There were multiple occasions when my father would press his call button because he needed to use the bathroom, and an aide would tell him to simply go in his pants and they would clean him up afterward. No adult should be treated that way if they are capable of using the bathroom. Whenever I visited, he often smelled of urine, and I assumed that was just part of assisted living because I had no other experience to compare it to. Looking back, I realize it was not normal. The cost also became completely unreasonable. By the time we moved him, the monthly cost had risen to nearly $12,000. We sacrificed a tremendous amount financially to keep him there. Two years ago, when costs increased, my only affordable option was to move him into a shared room. Although the other side of the room was unused, his portion was extremely small. Once his dresser, television, and recliner were in place, there was barely any room left. He preferred having his recliner, so that became the priority. Eventually, I moved him to Tappan Zee Manor. While the food may not be quite as good, the quality of care is night and day. The cost is less than half of what we were paying, he has a large private room, and he never smells or appears unkempt. When he presses his call button because he needs the bathroom, staff respond promptly and assist him with dignity. They also provide entertainment and activities similar to what Sunrise offers. The facility may not look as fancy, but for the difference in cost and the improvement in care, there is simply no comparison. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this facility unless you have substantial financial resources and require very little assistance. She was doing well in the assisted living for about a year until she had a fall in the dining room caused by the kitchen door knocking her down. Within months she confined to a wheelchair as a result of the fall. Her health continued to decline physically and mentally. In July of this year the director recommended memory promising improved care. However, the care situation worsened once she went to the memory care. We consistently find her wet to the point where her clothes are soaked with urine and a puddle under her wheelchair. We have spoken to the director of arbor as well as the director of memory care and nothing has improved. Our complaints have been ignored and the care continues to decline. We had to reach out the corporate representative and they haven't addressed our concerns. All we are asking for is Arbor to address her basic needs of using the bathroom on a regular basis and not be left wet.

They have been very flexible given we had some medical emergencies leading up to her return. Mary Kate and Lauren are both kind and caring in Nursing and been so helpful in getting my mom's medical needs met. The aids that have cared for my mom have been very friendly and are quick to come in when the emergency cord is used to call them. Of course there will be times when somebody might need to wait a few extra minutes, but they do their best to help as soon as possible. The kitchen prepares foods that are not only healthy but appetizing for the residents. There are substitute options available. The games and social activities are meant to get everybody involved as they choose. The Promenade provides a cheerful and clean environment. Big screen TVs in common areas. Once they took him it turned out to be the opposite of what they sold. Their sales people are not educated in health care. In the case of our Father, we were transparent about his Dementia and unsure what the proper place was for him. They assured us that they were familiar and had the proper structure in place to give him adequate care. They went further to say that they were building out a memory care unit which he would be perfect for. He never received the services they offered, which were PT, OT, Speech and Psych. He only received PT on a sporadic basis. They mismanaged his Meds for his first two months which we only found out during a med renewal period. They missed hygiene appointments and were late taking him to meals on several occasions. He was moved to another room due to bed bugs and left in confusion alone in the unfamiliar room for hours at a time resulting a face first fall whereby he was hospitalized after suffering a bad black eye and cut to the bridge of his nose. The Aides were completely untrained to handle full care and in fact took video without permission publicly ridiculing and chastising him. Our Dad suffered injuries, malnourishment and setbacks, which was devastating for our family. No one there took accountability. Instead they pressed us to get him out, which we were looking to and finally able to do. Unless they truly dedicate themselves to being nothing but a sales job, your cared one will be at risk there both in health and economically.

Maybe I get that when going in since you can see her, but when trying to get out, how are you supposed to know if she is at her desk behind a closed door? Plus she is always complaining about something and commiserating with co-workers on how unfair others are to her. Nice lady but step out of her lines and you are toast. They cover up the smell of urine in the halls with Febreeze .... Rodent issues - Mice traps are clear as day in residents rooms, hallways, and common areas. Yea, not a good place to put a loved one!
