My husband and I are visiting the Island and stopped here for our first dinner of the trip. We started with the New England Clam Chowder. It came quickly and was tasty. Every bite was loaded with clam in a creamy base. We then shared the St Andrews Fish and Chips. It came with three perfectly battered cod and hand cut fries. Add a bit of malt and it was exceptional. We had a large party of 11; they sat us within twenty minutes and accommodated us even at the late hour. Our server was really great and patient. I got the Chicken Pot Pie - it was so delicious. Flaky crust, beautifully creamy center, perfect. My boyfriend got the Clubhouse burger - and it was delicious. I also ordered two bloody Mary's - they were fantastic and cheap. It was a cold rainy weekend and we wanted warm atmosphere and comfort food. The British Open Pub was perfect. Our meals were great, bigger servings than we needed, other meals going by looked equally awesome. Bar area was busy, there was even a happy hour so we got a deal on drinks! Service was good, friendly. Lots of people coming and going, some turned away, no tables. I'd say get a reservation. Big parking lot in a plaza so lots of parking. Great food with a British flare. We tried the ROYAL LYTHAM BEEF COTTAGE PIE, which is their version of Shepherd's Pie. It was was good, but not the best thing we tried. We also got the ST. I've been to the British Open pub a half a dozen times over the past 10 years and it is always the same. The food is solid. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible - just good pub food which hits the spot. It's only when I'm back after a year or two away that I remember the downside of this place. It's a relatively small place and the golf theme attracts the golfing crowd. I'm a golfer so nothing wrong with that but... there is nothing louder in the world than a group of middle age golfers trying to relive the college glory days on a golfing weekend. There's always a group of 6-8 of them in this place regaling the whole restaurant with their past exploits. With the small space of the pub, normal conversation is practically impossible. Good food, decent prices but not a quiet evening out. That said, if you enjoy listening to the tall tales of 50 year olds sitting 3 tables away, this is the place for you. read more

Nice place to go for brunch. Very interesting menu and friendly service in a unique small restaurant. Food quite good and prices very fair for this sometimes overpriced island. Had banana foster french toast (never heard of such a thing!) but large tasty portion and wife had a smoked salmon plate with a nice portion size of salmon. My wife and in-laws decided to grab breakfast here one day. We started out with low expectations to begin with - a British pub for breakfast? Our first cups of coffee were cold, but they were replaced quickly - and we moved on to order some food. The waitress was adequate - nothing to write back saying it was greatest service ever - but it was efficient. Our food came out in a decent amount of time considering we all ordered differently. What was amazing was the quality of the food for the price! It was a nice sized plate of omelettes, pancakes, and french toast. The food was really good - definitely as good as any diner would provide - and it was far less busy and cheaper. When we go visit our in-laws again, we will return for breakfast as this was a nice little gem to find to grab bacon and eggs! read more

This place has always been a go to when on the island. This trip, service was slow and we hardly saw our waitress( understand they might be short staffed) Food was cold. Liver is not good cold, nor is fish or scotch eggs. The margarita was mainly sour mix. Sadly, this place is now off my list. I hope they get back to their good status. read more

Miss Alice says the She Crab soup is wonderful. We both ordered the lunch portion of the Fish and Chips. I was disappointed. I always find the tempura type breading too overwhelming especially with two smaller size portions of fish. You don't get to taste the fish. The fries were too crispy and rather flavorless without ketchup. Such a shame. read more

The wait staff was much nicer. The food quality is OK for a pub. The value is pretty good. The seafood platter was respectable in portion and preparation. My wife like her shepherds pie. Like this place and it is in our family rotation of establishments. Lobster pot pie and the steak salad are our favorites. On more than 2 occasions, and we have only been there 5 times total, we have heard bickering amongst the employees of who's table is who's, complaints over tips and whose responsibility certain tasks are. This is back of the house stuff and should not be present to customers. Food is good and so is service but tensions amongst employees is a bit uncomfortable at times. read more

Went here with my family for dinner. Fell in LOVE with the lobster pot pie. Absolutely amazing and packed full of lobtser. For 25$ it was a steal if you ask my. Id spend more for that. Yeah, it was that good. My fiance got the bangers and mash. He too loved every bit. The sweet potato fries were perfect. Needless to say, so pleased we came back the fay after for the Sunday brunch. His benedict was to die for. Best he has ever had. I had something more simple but still did not disappoint! The english muffins were an A+. The scones as well. Nice selection if freah juices too. Been coming here for several years. Our most recent visit was a bit disappointing. I expected a larger selection of Single Malts but Oban was fine. The food lived to expectations. British Open Pub is such an underrated gem on Hilton Head Island. It is situated and hidden by unassuming touristy village shops. Mediocre at best! We had a group of 6, 3 kids and 3 adults. All kids got chicken fingers and fries (only ok, these didn't all get ate) but when they asked us if our oldest wanted an adult sized drink instead of the kids, we said yes not knowing they would CHARGE us the $2.75 when a drink comes with the kids meal. The adults got fish and chips (pretty good) and one got the ribs which were very tough, not tender at all. So overall, from our experience, only go for the fish! read more

Absolutely avoid at all cost. The fries tasted like the oil was 2 weeks old and the fish tasted like it was washed with dish's soap and not rinsed. The coleslaw was too wet. Although it tasted ok. I placed my almost full plate by the end of the table. The waitress came by twice and didn't say a thing. At her third stop i told her about my food. She said that the oil was changed the day prior and she served 40 of them today and they were fine. She graciously offered us 10% off. What a joke! read more

My wife and I come to Hilton Head every year. I like the decor and the atmosphere, and have always enjoyed the beers I have ordered over the years. Several years ago we were introduced to the British Open Pub, and specifically the lobster pot pie. My reaction to the first lobster pot pie I had here so many years ago was "Amazing and delicious". It was full of lobster, the sauce was creamy and buttery, and the puff pastry was thick, overflowing, and flaky. It was so good that I helped my wife finish hers. Every year we made a point to visit the Pub to have the lobster pot pie we fell in love with. Every year (even though we noticed a few tweaks to the recipe over time) we always enjoyed it very much. In fact, I don't recall ever eating anything else here but the pot pie. Fast forward to tonight's visit. The recipe has definitely changed, and changed to the point that I will not order it again. The pot pie was still full of "lobster", but appeared to now be mostly langostino with a few pieces of lobster thrown in. The sauce no longer has it's creamy, buttery flavor, and is instead more like a broth. There was much more celery and carrots than I ever remember, and the lovely puff pastry was lacking in volume. It was disappointing. A note about the service. Our server, Hannah, was friendly enough, but she seemed to be more interested in talking with co-workers than attending to her customers. Would I go back again. Probably, but not for the lobster pot pie. read more

This review is for the Sunday brunch. I'm a little stuck between 3 and 4 stars. Giving four stars for the very friendly staff who did their best despite the understaffed afternoon. The food was very good and the bottomless Bloody Marys were excellent! The "Gourmet English Breakfast Tea", however, was only Lipton and for 2.80 a glass I expected more than that. Plus this is supposed to be a real British pub! They'd never serve that crap. All in all, it was a great meal and there was great staff. This place is interesting, the atmosphere is trying to be a British Pub. Ok cool minus the flat screen TVs in the booths? The service was downright terrible. The redeeming quality was the food. The fish and chips were great, as was the lobster pot pie. The appetizers of mini beef wellingtons were also quite tasty. The bread pudding was amazing as well. The drinks were terrible though, I would stick with beer for sure, a member of my party ordered a lemon drop martini (not a tough beverage) and it tasted like lighter fluid. read more
