As soon as we walked in, R sniffed the air and said, "I smell menudo. I want some." We walked past the small panaderia area and, finding ourselves at the rear of the store where the taqueria was, we looked at all the food behind the glass in the kitchen area: chicharron, whole roasted chicken, pupusas, cooked beans and rice. There were other sections opening up to the dining area side, and these had toppings - radish, cucumber, beet, jalapeño, mix of cilantro and onion, lime wedges, and three different hot sauces - that customers could self-load onto their taqueria food purchases. R ended up getting a bowl of menudo with some tortillas, and I ordered a half of the rotisserie chicken and three tacos (two al pastor and one carnitas) made with homemade corn tortillas. We sat down at one of the booths that are in the dining area, which I think is pretty large for being in a supermercado that has so many different sections. One of the employees brought the food out to us. R liked his menudo, although it didn't have hominy in it, which is how he prefers it. It came in a huge bow, and was packed with meat and tripe. I sampled a little bit, and I thought the soup was on the salty side. My tree tacos were good. The size of the al pastor meat was inconsistent. On one of the two al pastor tacos, there were big and thick cubes of meat, which made it kind of tough, and the cubes of al pastor were smaller and more tender. The al pastor meat had good flavor; I could tell that the meat was marinated and had a hint of pineapple. The carnitas were good also. It's just that they didn't have a bold flavor that I like. I dressed all of the tacos with the complimentary onion and cilantro mix and the hot red sauce. The half of a rotisserie chicken had a light citrusy marinade on the outside. The chicken was a little dry due to being overcooked. In our future visits here (because we just HAVE to try some of the other taqueria menu items!) we plan on trying the ice cream and the different combinations of ice cream, fruits and other toppings as only the Latin Americans can mix up. Before we left, I scoped out the meat department. Most of the items looked very fresh, but I thought the price points were a tad on the high side.

Once I had the sandwich in hand, I didn't care about how hot it was. The bread was perfectly toasted on the outside - practically crumbling away as I bit into it. Slices of ham (the ham was a bit forgettable), swiss cheese, mustard and mayo, chopped mojo roasted pork and pickles (possibly bread and butter - sweeter than expected). The entire sandwich was the perfect combination and so flavorful. Probably one of the best renditions I have had in the city - I'll hit this place up again.

Tacos La Nortena is in the main Plaza Fiesta food court. Lots of free parking is available surrounding the always busy Plaza Fiesta. Note that there is a separate smaller food court a short walk from the main food court. The woman behind the counter (I only saw one employee the entire time I was there) was nice and attentive, and answered questions about various menu items. I ordered the chicken flautas, which cost less than $9. After about a 10 minute wait, the employee called out to me, as I sat at a nearby table, letting me know I could come to the counter and get my food. All of the flautas were covered with a lot of lettuce and cheese, making it look like a salad. After eating through the flautas toppings, I started eating the flautas. They were just average tasting. Comparing the flautas here with others that I've had from other Mexican restaurants, I felt the ones here missed the mark. The amount of meat in each of the flautas (6 per order) were good; however flavor was lacking. I prefer crispy flautas, but the corn tortillas were still a little soft, and one of the flautas was slightly cool on the inside. The beans and rice that came with the flautas were hot (temperature wise). The beans were bland tasting while the rice was just OK. Be warned that the food court is right next to the kids' play area, and it gets rather noisy. I don't get bothered by noisy kids, though, so I was fine with all of the yelling and screaming.

I damn near burned my hand trying to get into them but once I did and the shredded beef cooled a bit I was amazed!!!The shredded beef was tender and fing wonderful. As they continued to cool I tried the outer crust. Unlike the crimped flour pastry these seemed to be made of corn batter? It was a bit sweet not greasy and FABULOUS. I want to eat these treats everyday. I will not go down buford hwy without stopping. I want them served at my wedding. I LOVE THEM. GO NOW AND ORDER THE BEEF EMPANADAS.
