I couldn't give John and his business a higher rating! I used him a couple of years ago for my 86 year old mother. Her AC had in her duplex had stopped working. The compressor and made a loud pop or bang, shot out sparks and smoke. I was pretty sure it was toast. She had already had another company come out and tell her she needed a new system to the tune of about $8000. To make sure, I wanted a second opinion from someone highly rated on Yelp. I was referred to John Britton by another highly rated small company but too busy to get right out. We called Britton and, recognizing my mom's plight - it was July in Austin - he agreed to get right out there to help. I had come down from the DFW area and was there when he arrived. We discussed what had happened and he got right to work taking apart the outside unit (it was a Trane). The bottom and side of the compressor were black from a small fire that had started when the problem occurred. He opened up the terminal block on the side of the compressor, which was also blackened and melted. I said "well, I guess it's history, huh?", to which he responded (to my surprise) "don't be too quick to say that." He checked to see if the compressor was shorted (the other company had said it was), and he said no, it was not. He did some rewiring (took about 10 minutes) and said "let's give it a try." To my total disbelief, it fired right up - the compressor purring just like normal and the unit cooling fine. It turns out, as he explained, that Trane compressors have a sump heater -- probably designed for heat pump applications in warmer climates, but not really needed in central Texas. He said it was this heater that had shorted and gone out with a bang. He simply bypassed it (it isn't really necessary here), and we were back in business. He fixed the whole thing for around $75. (don't remember the exact number) and even repaired the broken disconnect that was left by the other company. He also took the time to try to explain the whole thing to my mom, showing incredible patience and compassion. Overall, like a said, I couldn't speak more highly of John and his ethics and professionalism. I should have written this review a long time ago (I meant to but just got busy). He as been back a couple of times for some minor repairs (cleaning a drain line, etc.) and has really gone over the top to be patient with and help my mom. I wouldn't use anybody else!! Now, this how you run a business! You offer amazing service by trained and experienced professionals who know how to represent the company and treat people like they would like to be treated...as part of the family! I am a rare reviewer on Yelp, but I had to write this one. There is a reason they have 5 stars from everyone who uses them! As a family member of a retired plumber/pipefitter who also has HVAC and electrical professionals in the family, I appreciated Jon listening to what I had done to troubleshoot the system after a technician from another company (the one who boasts being the official company of the Spurs) wrongly identified the issue as a bad hard surface ignitor and wanted to charge me $389 for a $23 part. I ordered the part myself and installed it but my problem wasn't resolved. After testing the resistance of the new ignitor and the old one myself, it was clear the old one was fine. (I'm guessing the tech from the other company didn't check it or he would have ruled it out.) Okay enough about the other guys, after patiently listening to me explain all the steps I had taken, Jon quickly validated them and identified the issue as a bad board...specifically that it wasn't sending enough power to the ignitor. He located a parts house less than 10 minutes away and ran to price out a replacement board. He called me from the parts house with a reasonable price ($31) above the $239 best price I had found online and asked for the go-ahead to purchase it. I obviously said yes. In fact, I'm not sure Britton even marked it up at all...I think I paid what he paid at the parts house. Anyway, he quickly returned and in 30 minutes we had a working furnace! In summary...at my house 15 minutes before the 2 hour window of arrival, quickly identified the issue after patiently listening to me, tracked down a replacement part, returned and installed it, then was on his way...all in only 1 1/2 hours. I will never call another company for HVAC service and neither should anyone else! read more

My AC gave out this year just as Austin temps hit the hundreds. Having been burned last time this happened by a slipshod heat pump install that cost me $1800 to fix, I took my time with this one and collect 5 bids for repair/replacement over the course of a very hot and sticky week. One thing I've learned about getting an AC replaced is that the the most important consideration is the skill and professionalism of the installer. I wanted good hardware and needed a good price, but mostly I wanted someone that knew what they were doing. Britton Service Group was the last one to look at the broken unit and bid on repair and replacement. Jon was also the only one to repair/rewire the burned out parts of the condenser so that the compressor could actually be tested and confirmed bad. Everyone else just took a quick look and assumed the compressor was bad and the whole thing needed replacement. Jon also took the time to lay out all my options and explain the city rebate programs. My best option turned out to be a complete replacement or this old system. The bid Jon gave me was not the lowest, but was in the ballpark and much lower than the one I got from some of the bigger outfits like ARS. But what clinched the deal was when he said he could drop in this new system that same afternoon. After a week of Austin summer with no AC I couldn't say no. Sure enough, a couple of hours after I gave the thumbs up, his crew was on sight pulling out the old unit and putting a new 13 SEER Trane unit. Jon was there the entire time and stayed until just before dark until cool air was again blowing through the house and the system was tuned. Jon also pulled the permits needed. The city inspection went fine -- everything was up to code and no problems. Its been in for about a month now and all-in-all I am very pleased. The unit is cooling find, keeps the humidity down and is quiet. Hopefully I won't have to go thought this again for a long time. read more

Jon and his team completely changed our lives for the better. They are all at the top of their game and really know what they are doing. First, there was Corrine, who helped us repeatedly on the phone. When I initially called, it was close to the end of business, and she called me back within the hour to get us scheduled for the very next day! Then after the job was completed, she helped us to resolve a payment issue. She was always quick to answer or return our calls, and she was able to answer my questions. She was friendly, nonjudgmental, patient, and easy to talk to. Then there were the installers, who worked tirelessly to get the job done quickly. They were super fast without sacrificing workmanship. I basically blinked, and the whole thing was installed. I missed the opportunity to thank them for all their hard work, so I hope they see it here. Thank you, guys!! We really appreciate everything that you did! It looks amazing, and it works better than it ever has before. And, finally, there is Jon. I don't even know where to start! He is a man of integrity with a kind soul, who also really knows his stuff. In a matter of minutes, he was able to tell us exactly what the problem was and what had caused it. We had gotten ourselves into an unfortunate position with another service provider, and Jon did EVERYTHING in his power to rectify the situation. He seemed genuinely concerned about our circumstance, and he went above and beyond to try to help us. He turned our rotten lemons into sweet, sweet lemonade, and we can't thank him enough! Nick is our hero! Had a 102 degree day...AC was going in and out (of course was a Saturday!). Called Britton Service Group, left a message for their on-call technician. It was a hot Saturday, figured tech would be tied up all day, got a pleasant surprise, Nick called back about a hour and a half later and put us in the queue. We were #3 in line and it was already 4PM -- didn't think it'd happen today...but lo and behold, Nick called about 2 hours later to tell us he was 10 min away and asked if we were available. Nick arrived and assessed the various things we noticed (hubby missed on all points -- the reason to pay for a trained professional!), got to the root of our issue and got us fixed up -- didn't require any serious repair after all (thank goodness!). Britton Service Group isn't about just trying to move new AC units (last one was...), was about addressing the actual problem, even if it meant not selling any parts. Is hard to find that integrity in the HVAC field today, it seems. We immediately signed up for their VIP membership for ongoing maintenance and service discounts. We actually had Nick as our technician some years back with a different outfit based out of San Antonio, was really pleased to have him back and with a local outfit this time. Nick did a great job, is very courteous and politely listened to my hubby babble on about what he thought was wrong, didn't contradict him, just quietly assessed our situation, addressed the problem and we're back up and cooled down. read more

I came home from work and immediately knew something was wrong with our AC because it was 87 degrees F in the house when the thermostat was set to 73. It was already 7pm so I started looking up AC repair places expecting not to get to talk to someone until the next day. I called Britton Service after looking them up on Yelp and left a message. I was surprised that less than 30 mins later I got a call back from Daryl who took down my information and apologized that their techs were scheduled that night until 10 pm and it would not be able to come out until tomorrow. I was shocked, not only did I not expect a phone call that night based on the time, but the courtesy he showed over the phone was great. The tech guy, John, came out today. I was scheduled for a 10am-12pm appointment and I figured, based on my experience with other service techs like phones/internet/cable, that the time slot would really mean he might show up by 12pm at the best. Imagine my further surprise when John showed up at 10am on the dot. He quickly figured out the issue, a blown capacitor, and didn't charge an arm and a leg to replace it. He was polite, efficient, and fixed the issue perfectly. The temperature in my house dropped by 3 degrees while he was walking me through what the issue was. I am beyond impressed with the service and timeliness considering how damn hot it gets in Texas. Would absolutely recommend these guys for any AC needs. read more

You can't do better for home or business heating/AC service than the team at Britton. I replaced my old HVAC system, and after site visits by two other well-known companies in the Austin area, settled on Britton. I'm so glad I did because Darrell really took the time to look over my existing set up and research the best possible solution for our home. I wanted the most energy efficient I could get at a reasonable cost, plus equipment that would last. He came back with multiple scenarios so I could see the potential cost/benefits. And they have Trane equipment, which is the best in the industry. Their techs are efficient, knowledgeable, polite, and friendly. They were on time and careful of my property. I had to have my attic access enlarged for the new unit, and they referred a carpenter for that and oversaw that too. They also reworked my poorly designed duct work to balance the airflow in the house. Even with much better and more efficient equipment than quoted by the competition, Britton's cost was about the same and even less in one case. I later had them add a whole house air purification unit that cleans out dust and airborne matter. I will never use another company for my HVAC work. Signed up for the very reasonable bi-annual inspection/cleaning/maintenance plan too, since even small problems can kill the AC pretty fast (like coolant leaks or leaves/junk collecting in the outside fan unit.) read more

This is my first Yelp review and I felt compelled to leave a review for this company; 5 stars does not do them justice, they deserve a higher score. I purchased a home with an old system and hired Britton to replace the gas furnace and ac condenser. I brought in 3 AC companies to give me quotes and Britton came in at the lowest and with the best system "Trane". Daryl, who sold me the system, blew me away with his attention to detail and was literately at my house for an hour during the quote process; he took me through every single detail and even went up into my attic to check out my air ducts. Daryl sold me exactly what I needed and didn't try to oversell me on a system that my house did not need. I have a finished garage and these guys charged me only materials to add an air duct and return into the garage. During the install process two gentlemen came in to do the job and Daryl was there the ENTIRE time and made sure everything was done perfectly. These guys were extremely quick, very decisive, and were constantly cleaning up after themselves. Y'all there's a reason these guys have a 5 star overall rating... they earn it! About a week ago my A/C quit blowing air. Never good, but better in March than in July! I was already prepared for the worst when I called Britton to schedule someone to come take a look and give me the bad news that I was going to have to suck it up and replace the system. They were able to get Nick out the same day - they told me between 4-6pm & he was here by 4 on the dot. Sure enough, the 20 year old, less than top of the line system had finally given up the ghost. Nick broke the news as gently as possible. He also worked hard to find the best unit to replace it with & get me a reasonable price. Even better, he was able to get the old system running so that we didn't have to go without until install could be scheduled. I spoke to Corinne & scheduled the installation for the 4/3/17, in the afternoon. Nick arrived first, after calling to say he was on his way to get things started. I work from home & honestly, my day was hardly even interrupted. These guys were friendly and considerate, and also quieter than I would've thought it possible to be for something like this. Not to mention CLEAN! When they left I had a perfectly installed, shiny new system and not even the tiniest mess to clean up. We came back from being out of town to a non-functioning air conditioner in the middle of August. It was a Friday evening when we got home and we made calls to a few different companies about getting our A/C back on. It was determined fairly quickly that our unit was broken by the first company that we talked to, our unit was 20 years old and had been on its last leg for a number of years. So we ended up getting three different quotes to have our unit replaced. Jon worked with us over the weekend and helped us figure out what we needed. He was able to schedule a crew to install our new unit on Monday (we didn't decide what we were going to buy until Sunday). His quote was lower by a couple of thousand dollars and they were installing the same product. The crew was fast, professional, and left the job site clean and our house cool again. What finally drove me to write this review, was today (a Sunday) there was a problem with our A/C. I poked around and couldn't figure out where the problem was so I called Jon Britton again. I got a quick call back and a guy was dispatched to our house within the hour. He quickly found a blown fuse, replaced it and we were back up and running. Well, this is my first review ever on yelp. And Britton service group is the reason for it! Our AC had problems since last year but we did not want to bother with it until now because we thought it was going to be very expensive. But Jon proved how wrong we were. We called him on 7/7/2013 (Sunday) in the morning (on a long holiday weekend) and he returned our call promptly. He offered to come on the same day with no extra charge for working on a Sunday afternoon (NO EXTRA CHARGE??? Hard to beat. It also shows me how nice he was). Unfortunately we were not available so he offered to come in the next morning. He DID! 10am on Monday morning. He took about 40 minutes to check and fix our AC. Turned out it needed some freon. He discussed the possibility checking for leaks (potentially a lot of money) but never pressured us into doing anything. So we decided to just add some freon. The house cooled down immediately after his service!!! No more sleepless nights. He gave us a great student discount and charged us a very reasonable price for the freon (much lower than the average that I found online). Jon was professional, efficient and charged very very reasonable rates (in short, he is AWESOME). I would definitely recommend him to anyone who need AC services in the future. read more

My outside unit quit working and therefore my AC quit cooling. Jon came out and found the problem. He first checked the contactor for ants (common problem, easy to fix). This had happened to me before in my previous house. Not the case here. My high pressure switch had flipped and had not reset itself as it should. I know this, as Jon explained it to me and, without rushing, answered my questions. He gave me two options: an economical one, and one that put it back as the factory had had it. He explained that the economical one was an aftermarket unit which screwed onto the Freon port, while the factory part would be soldered in-line. Unsoldering and breaking into the Freon line, soldering the new one in, and charging, etc. was why the like-factory way was so much more expensive. There might possibly be some quality differences, as the factory unit was from the manufacturer and soldered into the system as opposed to one from an aftermarket company that screwed onto the Freon port. Later I asked Jon if there was anything wrong with the aftermarket solution and he simply said "No." No sales job. I went with the factory part option, but I liked having a choice. I will recommend Britton to my friends. read more

I'm adding to my first review because these guys have come back out to help us with our upstairs unit after fixing the downstairs one I wrote about in my first review. Our upstairs unit has been problematic since we moved in (working at least partially all the time but inconsistent when it gets really hot out) and we have had multiple companies look at it without ever getting a lasting fix. Britton has now been out here a few times working on it and it turns out we have what amounts to a structural defect in our home that the other companies missed that is causing the 130 degree attic air to leak into the AC unit. It wasn't an obvious problem to identify but they did figure it out. We have been so impressed with the men working for Britton. Every one of them has been incredibly nice and hard working. They made sure we knew they would get this issue taken care of once and for all. After the first fix the temperature difference improved by 50% (set thermostat at 74 and it ran 78 whereas it use to run 82!) They have come back to tweak things more than once when we followed up to let them know it was improved but not perfect yet. Really can't say enough good things about this company. read more

Knowing quite a bit about air conditioning myself, I attempted to fix a problem with my compressor unit. After some debugging I realized that the fan motor was bad. The replacement fan motor had an extra wire and its own capacitor. I hooked it up, but was not sure what to do with the original capacitor wiring. When I tried the unit, it worked correctly except the compressor did not shut off with the fan. This is when I decided to call Britton. I'd used them in the past a couple of times and was happy with their work. The technician I got hold of this time when I called was busy working in an attic and said he'd call back. When I did get to talk to him I explained what I'd done and he was willing to help me debug the problem over the phone. This was a life saver since it was now Friday afternoon and the earliest they could come out would be the following Monday evening. My A/C is now working better than ever thanks to his help. I would not hesitate to call these guys to come out and have them work on my air conditioner. They are competent and caring. read more

Update: we had Britton Service Group put in a whole new system today, as our 15-year-old system bit the dust on Friday. Jon came out yesterday and had a crew here installing a new Trane system this morning. Everyone was on time, from the handyman who removed our attic ladder (Jason King- extremely friendly, helpful, and competent-already have him coming back to make other repairs around the house) to the men who installed the system. We are very happy with the work they did; my husband went up in the attic after and checked it out. Jon's price was very reasonable for a 5-ton Trane and a new Nest thermostat. We were most impressed that Jon had his GM bring us two portable A/C units yesterday to use overnight until the new unit was in. He set them up and came back today to pick them up. We will ALWAYS call Jon for future HVAC needs, although I don't think we will be needing them for a long time :-) great job!!! read more

My A/C stopped working as soon as the rains stopped and the heat began. I wanted to find a reputable, honest company that I could rely on for future maintenance. So I studied the Yelp reviews and reached Jon at Britton Service Group. I called on Saturday and he returned my call an hour later. Super friendly and polite. Now I know that my A/C is pretty old and I was afraid that the repair would be very expensive or alternatively, there would be no repair and I would have to take out a second mortgage to buy a new system. So when he came to my house on Sunday, I was experiencing a little bit of trepidation. But he figured out pretty quickly that it was a fairly inexpensive fix and took care of it. He was great, such a nice person and my A/C system is working better than ever! I will be using this company now for all my heating and A/C needs and I will definitely recommend them to all my friends! read more

My wife and I lucked out finding this guy. Last night around 8pm, our AC stopped blowing cold air. Being that it was the hottest day of the year and knowing the next day was only going to be hotter, we were kinda freaking out. So we know we need to call a pro to come fix it and start thinking the worst (cost, length of time to get it fixed, etc). A friend recommends a different AC pro so we call him first. He says he's backed up and recommends we call Jon Britton. By this time it's 9:20 at night. Jon answers and says he'll be over in 20 minutes. Whoa, now that just rules! Turns out it was our capacitor that crapped out and Jon had a new one replaced and ready to go in 10 minutes. And best of all, the price was fantastic! I woke up this morning freezing and happy! We hired the Britton Service Group to order and install a new HVAC system. The service provided by Corrine V. and Nick S. was excellent. Nick, in particular, was very professional and extremely helpful. Customer reviews of HVAC systems are remarkable for a high degree of polarization. A large number of people are very satisfied with the system they chose but an equally large number are very unsatisfied. This is true of all systems in high use, including TRANE which is what we chose. Nick concurred with our view that this was probably due to the quality of installation work. We were not introduced to the installation team which had very little interaction with us during installation but if the quality of their work matches the quality of Nick's work then everything should be OK. Since this is a new installation we cannot say anything more. Time will tell. read more

Originally called a plumber/hvac service and when they finished their assessment, they gave me a $1700 estimate. I was floored and asked how many hours labor and they said 2-4 and the parts were covered under warranty. I couldn't stomach it so I called Eric Fontaine from Fontaine AC and he recommended Britton because they work with Trane products. I called Britton and they had someone out the next day and gave me an estimate that was 1/3 the cost and said they would be out on Sunday or Monday to replace the parts when they come in. I was surprised they worked or wanted to work on a Sunday. Surprise number two came when they called the next day and said they would like to install the part 2 days earlier than estimated. Great service by Britton at a great price and Rudy was excellent and really nice! I will definitely use them again in the future. read more
