This is a beautiful spot in a fun neighborhood that's trying just a tad too hard. Their servers are earnest and their menu ambitious, but in the end the food is adequate but not particularly innovative. I ordered the Humboldt squid and the tuna tataki -- the former was basically souped up fried calamari (although nicely souped up), and the tataki was like so many other seared/rare tuna thingies I've had elsewhere. The courtyard is lovely though, and even if the food doesn't blow your doors off, it's a nice place to sit and enjoy. read more

I came here tonight with a friend for drinks based on my previous experience at this place. The previous time was fine, we were only drinking, no food. Today, wasn't that great. I ordered this riesling from their menu, they ran out, so they recommended another riesling that's also from the Alsace region. When we were served, my wine glass was hot and it soon warmed up the wine very fast. I called the waiter over and asked why he served me with a hot wine glass, and his reply was "It just came out of the dishwasher, you want that changed?"... (In my head I was thinking, change to what? another hot glass), so I said no thanks. I then checked the rest of the un-poured wine and thought how can they do this and they call themselves a wine house. I had to ask for a ice bucket twice to chill the decanter... My riesling didn't taste that good... whatever substitute they were using, was not good, I think I will either order a full bottle next time, or ask them to pour in front of me, but won't be coming here for a while based on today's hot glass experience. (however, the bartender who had the irish accent seemed to be nice and friendly, he was not the one that served us, but he came over to check our table all the time.) read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. We were sat in the courtyard which was great besides the plants hovering around my head. It was probably the only table out there with that issue though. Other than that, our service was timely and we weren't rushed for a decision on drinks or food. The server was super friendly and accommodating - but not the awkward kind, you know? The food was spot on too. We ordered the same duck dish for mains- I thought it was delicious. The duck was cooked well and the dish as a whole worked perfectly. The gf wasn't totally won over and said she's had better duck. Dessert: get the peanut butter salted caramel cheesecake thing. My friend and I enjoyed everything about this place. It is a nice upscale place in the middle of Yaletown/ Vancouver. The service is outstanding. They have a good collection of local and international wines. We both ordered the special of the day: "Rockfish", it was a delicious grilled white fish with a vegetable and sausage stew. The highlight of our dinner was actually the side of Kimchi Rice that we ordered... it was the most AMAZING rice I have ever tried! Booked a romantic spot on the patio for a special occasion. My partner ordered two small plates (beet salad and tuna tataki) to arrive at the same time as my main dish order (Bolognese). We thought we'd enjoy our starting drink before the food would actually arrive. However we were barely a third of the way through before all of our food arrived - no joke. Food was ok - nothing great. Bolognese was very salty with a sauce to pasta ratio beyond comprehension. Description of tuna was a bit misleading as it was served with a slaw and not a salad. My partner had the special dessert that was really delicious - so a good note to end on. After being rushed through our food we found it difficult to track someone down to get the bill. Overall disappointing. We've been here a number of times for work events but not so sure we'd come back for a meal again ourselves. read more

Wow, I just can't say enough good things about this place. We called them fairly last minute hoping to get a table for a very special occasion and even though it was a busy weekend, they managed to get us a table in their beautiful courtyard. The service was amazing and the food even better. This will now be our new spot for our Anniversary dinners and any romantic dinners for that matter. Me and my wife had been looking for a place to eat on a rainy Saturday night. Unfortunately for us it was a hockey night slash football night and both games had ended and the hungry sports fans had filled our usual spots and we've been told that we'd be waiting forty to fifty minutes at the door. We felt like Mary and Joseph everywhere we went we were told No Room. We finally made our way to the brix and mortar and we were told a seat had just become available. As soon as we came in a DJ was playing the latest hip mix of music. The atmosphere was hip but not cheap. For whatever reason I wanted a steak, and to that day I've never been blown away by a steak I've ordered from anywhere, yet i wanted one. Go for the appetizers; don't stay for the mains. Desserts are light, inspired, interesting- especially the mussels, which on the day that I went, were better than Chambar's by far. Their salads are particularly well executed. But the main dishes are plain. Fish too salty, lamb shank so dry that you can hardly chew it (I'm sure my dog would love it though)... I love the setting of Brix restaurant, the outdoor heated patio makes me feel like I am back in a romantic courtyard in Italy. It really is so romantic. However, the last time I was here the food was definitely not worth the price. For ~$30 a plate I expected to have the type of quality dining experience I am used to getting at places such as Chambar, however, this was not the case. If I was just rating the service and the setting I would give this restaurant 5 stars but since it is a restaurant and food is huge component I had to lower it to 3. read more

Just visited this place for the first time a couple of days ago. I really enjoyed the experience. Luckily the weather was nice and we were able to sit in their courtyard. I enjoyed the entire ambiance. The courtyard felt soooo european! The service was great. The server was attentive and had great recommendations. We started off with the Albacore Tuna Tataki which was very tasty. I loved the touch of cilantro. Then as a main I had the AAA Beef Tenderloin which I was also very pleased with. I asked to have it done medium/well... it's hard to believe how many places in town can't get it right. And last but not least, I had the Chocolate Mud Cake for desert which was also good but I would try something different next time. It was good but didn't blow my mind. read more

Beyond disappointing. My husband and I had such a nice waitress and thought the ambience was beautiful. I got the vegan dinner but wanted to make changes. The waitress came back and said the chef didn't want to accommodate my dietary restrictions so I said I'll get a salad. Our waitress was insistent that I get the dinner. She said she'd make it work. I told her it wasn't a big deal but she was insistent on it. Instead of a variety of vegetables, I got mainly 2. It was AWFUL! I only got broccolini which tasted like they were frozen. I had 4 pieces of asparagus and potatoes. To say they were smothered in oil is being nice. I said I needed light oil but obviously that didn't matter. I told the waitress there was too much oil and I couldn't eat it. But she told me to do what I could and she'd give me a box for the rest. WHAT? We wound up paying for a meal I couldn't eat (my husband took 1 bite and went "WOW that is too much oil even for me"). Beyond disappointing. I wouldn't recommend at all! No one apologized or came up to us to offer anything else. What started out as great service ended on a horrible note! read more

Went for my birthday dinner with family and from the moment we walked in and sat down, I couldn't have been more happy with the entire evening. Our server was super friendly, offering her honest opinions on drinks and food, and had us laughing while feeling cared for all night. The food - I ordered the Brome Lake Duck Breast and it was seared with a nice crispy skin. The other members of my party had the Wild Salmon and the Pork Cheek Tagliatelle of which they all found delicious! Thanks for making my birthday dinner one to remember! Love the look of the place! Very "LA" vibe with the vines up the walls. Me and my mom were the first keeners to arrive at 5:30 pm (everyone hates "those" people haha) but the staff were great and friendly. Food was good (pear soup & salmon ) but I can't speak much for the vibe since we were there at old people hours and no one else was there. Prior to leaving for our week vacation to Vacncouver, I told my bf I wanted to get "dolled up" one night and go out for a romantic dinner. I had originally made reservations elsewhere but after doing some research (I love Google) I came across Brix. I cancelled our previous reservations at the other restaurant and made Friday night reservations for Brix. We arrived about 20 minutes early for our 8pm reservation but were seated immediately. The restaurant fit the "romantic" vibe I was looking for. When you walk in from the street, you walk through curtains to an outdoor patio with seating and a beautiful chandellier. The dinning room is beautifully lit with minimal decor and plenty of mirrors to reflect light. Brix hit the nose with romance on my date night! Service was spectacular! Our server Devin was top notch. He made amazing recommendations and was kind enough to take our photo to capture the evening. He was hilarious! Devin moved us from our table to another table near the window beacause the lighting was better. It felt like a photo-op! Hahaha! It was so kind of him to go out of his way like that. We got to talk to him a bit thoughtout the evening...what a great guy. Devin let us know one of the specials was a "butcher's cut" of steak, which they were almost sold out of. My bf ordered butcher's cut! I overheard the table next to us trying to order and their server went to check if it was still available...nope cuz my baby got the last one! I'm a meat and potatoes type of girl but I didn't learn to properly order my meat until about 2 years ago. My boyfriend has had a lot of steak in him lifetime, a lot of steak, and the steak he had on this night, was as he said, "the best steak I've ever had." I had the lamb based on Devin's recommendation. The lamb did not disappoint. The meat was tender and came right of the bone. The risotto the dish came with was so good that I wanted to stop eating it so it would last longer. And for the finale we had the peanut butter cheesecake...how could we not??? I can't even begin to describe the yumminess that consumed my mouth. We paired it with a port wine...it's listed on the menu as a recommended pairing with the dessert. And what a pair it was!
