Maria didn't just point me toward a wall of canvases. She asked what I liked, what my style was, what my mom might enjoy, and she actually listened. She pulled out options I never would've found on my own, explained the details without making me feel overwhelmed, and helped me pick out a canvas for myself that I'm honestly obsessed with. She also helped me choose one for my mom that feels so perfectly her it almost made me emotional. There's something really refreshing about someone who knows their craft and still treats you like a person instead of a transaction. I visited the Verge Center for the Arts on Sacramento's free museum day. I had always thought the…read moreVerge center offered different types of art and ceramics classes for the community but they also have a few nicely displayed exhibit rooms with 2 and 3 dimensional art on display from several local California artists. My favorite exhibit was that of a large tapestry scroll mounted on the wall depicting the artists happiness sorrow and angst. I love art that makes me think and wonder what the [bleeeep] the artist was thinking when he created it. I stared and pondered then I stared and pondered some more. I took a picture of the giant scroll (attached to this review). And I meandered on through Verge museum in my mind space. The learning classroom was an outstanding walk thru as every wall is adorned with exemplars of student work. There is a small museum store in the front lobby area which offers unique glass Jewelery, 3 dimensional ceramic pieces, fabric totes, artist pencils, acid free sketch books, and several lovely coffee table books. I will return to Verge center as they offer art classes to the community and they have a couple kilns where you can buy kiln time... ‍

I visited the Fly Brave Emporium thrift store recently and was immediately impressed by their organized and well stocked store of both gently used and local artisan items. There were a lot of different merchandise, from everyday casual clothes, to formal wear and even a section of prom dresses, to kids clothes, to shoes for every age, there's something for everyone. I also saw cute costume jewelry, bags, purses, home goods / kitchenware, dishes, bakeware, a small section of arts and crafts supplies, and quite a lot of wall art and other home decor. There were also little souvenir type gifts for those looking for presents for their loved ones and friends. All at reasonable prices and good to great used conditions, with some items actually new and never used. Against one wall, there was a display of T-shirts by the participants in this program, most of whom are autistic. That is such a wonderful artistic outlet for them, and for such a good cause as the proceeds from these T-shirts and sweatshirts sales go back to this foundation's meaningful mission, to provide disabled young adults with vocational training to develop employment, social, and independent living skills. Towards the back of the store was their Fly Brave Cafe. On the day I visited, the cafe was not open, but it's usually open from Tuesday to Saturday, and I see that their coffee is top-notched, so I'll have to come back another day to try their coffee. The gal who saw me looking at the cafe was organization mechanize in the back area and when I asked about donating here, she told me they accept donations any day that they're open, but if you have a LOT to donate, Wednesday is their preferred time to accept large bags and boxes of gently used items. Overall, this is a nicely designed, tastefully stocked, and meaningfully operated thrift store with a great cause. Staff were friendly and helpful when I asked about bringing donations and the cafe hours. I will have to come back another day to try the drinks in their cafe and do more shopping. Finally, Bacon and Butter is right next door so you can also enjoy brunch on a Sunday if in the neighborhood or a nice meal any day of the week.

My husband googled local book stores and came upon East Village Bookshop. It's a new bookstore that is still in their soft opening phase. I belive it took over the Birkenstock shoe store. It's a beautiful space with lots of natural light from all the windows. After a bit of a search we found a parking space, it's hard to find a space in the area on a beautiful Sunday. There are a few lots around, but those weren't as close as the street parking options. We found a space down the street from Rick's Dessert Diner, someone was just leaving so we made a quick U-turn and snagged the spot. Once we had a spot we went for a little lunch first to curb our appetite so our tummies wouldn't grumble while we shopped. There isn't a parking limit on Saturdays and Sundays on street parking. During the week I belive there is a 2 hour limit on the street parking int he area. Now that we parked we can shop till we drop. We were only a few blocks from the bookstore. What a beautiful little shop. I love all the open space in the store, it's not crammed full of books like some book stores. The store is full of new books, no used books here. We were on a quest for travel books as we're trying to plan our anniversary trip. Unfortunately we didn't find any here, but maybe we didn't look hard enough. This is going to be perfect for our dinner conversations. We currently have Table Conversations Cards that we've been working though, but we're running out of questions so this will be perfect to add to the mix. The owner also a writer presented the program and the place was great to see 90 people. I would highly recommend this bookstore while I was there waiting to have my book signed. I was able to see that they carry all your basic school required readings philosophy how to do it. It's just this wonderful sweet bookstore. They can order you any books that you need and I love shopping local.
