Now it's fifty-plus years later and after two Boxers brought into our lives via my wife it was my turn to pick out a dog. So now I (we) have a three-month-old Anatolian Shepard. Along with all the things that go along with having a new puppy I had to go vet shopping. I wanted to make sure I found a vet for the long haul and I was very unhappy with the practice we had used for our boxers. I also was turned off by the national chains like Banfield through places like PetSmart. The thousands of negative reviews on the BBB website are enough to give you shivers. It turns out finding a vet with room in their practice is no easy task. In the end, I settled on a small practice in Gardner Ma called Tender Heart Vet Care PC. My decision to bring Toby to Tender Heart was based on their reviews and the initial conversations I had with the office staff. They were very friendly, professional, and seemed genuinely excited to add an Anatolian Shepard to their list of patients. With all the challenges posed by COVID-19, I was unable to go into the office with my dog for his first appointment. The staff handled the odd situation very well and Toby seemed none worse for the wear. Like every vet, I received a list of all the recommendations and accompanying pricing. First visit, new puppy, I agreed to everything and this is where this review gets down to brass tacks. After I brought Toby and my invoice home, I checked into every vaccine and treatment. I am a researcher at heart and based on my research questioned one of the treatments and asked about the future vaccine schedule. This was all in a rather lengthy email. I received an email in return; very complete, very informative, and very prompt. That is what cemented my decision to stay with this practice. They are, to my experience; open, honest, and informative, a rare combination in veterinary practices. I am comfortable recommending this practice and will no doubt be leaving follow up reviews as Toby and I use them in the future.

Putting a dog down is gut wrenching and this clinic couldn't have been more compassionate. They have a quiet room with carpeting, a small loveseat and it feels like a home. We were able to be in that space with our dog as she was put down. It's a small detail but compared to a typical metal table exam room it made a huge difference. They gave us time, listened, and explained everything. Their kindness made a horrible situation a bit better and while I don't wish that situation on anyone, if you must, I couldn't recommend them higher.

We did a Google search for "24-hour ER vet" and went with the first hit... Now I saw a lot of anger and vitriol about the wait times and the vet fees at this place, so I was prepared for the worst. The wait time proved to be about as expected. I mean, this is emergency care. You have to expect long wait times especially if your issue is not "immediately life threatening". After we paid the check in fee, both our dogs were seen instantaneously by a vet tech. She was competent and friendly and accurately determined that our dogs weren't in any imminent danger. *phew* So our minds were put at ease. That's when our "wait time" began. And yes, it was slightly longer than we expected. But like I said; it's the ER. It's a crap shoot. After the extended wait, both our boys were examined and diagnosed by a friendly and knowledgeable DVM. It was a fast exam, but it was clear she knew what she was doing and had all the answers we needed. Our boys got what their treatments and we were on our way. As far as the fees go, YES they are quite high. Again, it's the nature of the ER and this place shouldn't be judged so fiercely on just that. But let me tell you, it is surprisingly expensive to go here. We are the types who say "whatever it takes" when it comes to our animals -- and even we were a bit surprised by the high cost of treatments. In the end, I'm not unhappy or dissatisfied with the care our dogs got at this place. In fact, the opposite. It was a late night emergency situation - not a regular exam or basic health concern. I hope to never be put in the situation where I need to depend on a 24 hour emergency vet clinic, but in the off chance I was, I wouldn't avoid this place. Based on my one personal experience, it was adequate and acceptable. That being said though, to anyone bringing their animals here; a few words of advice. 1: make sure it is a real emergency and you cannot wait until the next morning to see your normal vet. This is an ER. If your dog has a runny nose and you bring him here, you will be asked to wait behind the dog who was just hit by a car or the dog whose having full-on seizures. 2: Be prepared to wait longer than you are used to if your animal is not in "life threatening danger" (remember, it is an ER) and even if you think your dog is in imminent danger, you are probably not a vet and are probably not thinking objectively. 3: Be prepared to pay a little extra money than you are used to. (Again. Remember, it is an ER.) It is pricey to go here, so make sure you really need it when you make the call to go. If you can go into the clinic with those three things in mind, you will find this place is more than adequate for getting your animals back to health and probably won't feel compelled to write an angry review trashing people who, in actuality, are doing a really good job providing an important service.

We drover the 45 minutes to get there only to be told: oh we are at capacity and will not be able to see her! The next emergency vet is in Boston, 2 hours away!
