Since this was my first time owning a certain breed of dog, I had a few questions for him (the vet), to which he couldn't answer really any and ended up responding, "haven't you ever owned a dog before?" Yes, I have, but not this dog and not this breed. He then went on to tell me the questions were beneath him and left the room. If you want a caring, knowledgeable vet who will take the time with you and your pet, this is NOT the place.

Along with all the things that go along with having a new puppy I had to go vet shopping. I wanted to make sure I found a vet for the long haul and I was very unhappy with the practice we had used for our boxers. I also was turned off by the national chains like Banfield through places like PetSmart. The thousands of negative reviews on the BBB website are enough to give you shivers. It turns out finding a vet with room in their practice is no easy task. In the end, I settled on a small practice in Gardner Ma called Tender Heart Vet Care PC. My decision to bring Toby to Tender Heart was based on their reviews and the initial conversations I had with the office staff. They were very friendly, professional, and seemed genuinely excited to add an Anatolian Shepard to their list of patients. With all the challenges posed by COVID-19, I was unable to go into the office with my dog for his first appointment. The staff handled the odd situation very well and Toby seemed none worse for the wear. Like every vet, I received a list of all the recommendations and accompanying pricing. First visit, new puppy, I agreed to everything and this is where this review gets down to brass tacks. After I brought Toby and my invoice home, I checked into every vaccine and treatment. I am a researcher at heart and based on my research questioned one of the treatments and asked about the future vaccine schedule. This was all in a rather lengthy email. I received an email in return; very complete, very informative, and very prompt. That is what cemented my decision to stay with this practice. They are, to my experience; open, honest, and informative, a rare combination in veterinary practices. I am comfortable recommending this practice and will no doubt be leaving follow up reviews as Toby and I use them in the future.

I was put on hold. When she came back on, I was told 'they are less than desirable so she needed to be seen' again I asked what was wrong with her. Of course I'd make an appointment for medication but tell me what the results are. They wouldn't unless I paid for a visit. But I already paid for the RESULTS. The visit would be for the medication. They were putting this on the owner, BJ's desk for him to decide. I waited an hour for him to call. Finally I called another vet, explained my situation and asked their opinion. She also explained that the law doesn't allow them to prescribe medication unless they have eyes on the animal. I completely understand that and agree BUT tell what is wrong. I was very upset and she said I could bring my dog to her and she'd try and call for the results. I was still waiting to hear from the BJ, owner. I took my dog to the other veterinarian and she had to call THREE times asking for the results, each time they said they were sending them over. Someone finally read them over the phone and my dog got the medication she needed. It's been two days and still no word from BJ the owner.

I wanted to love this place as my partner and I had heard good reviews. We called prior to coming in and the person on the phone was unsure of what dogs were at the shelter currently (as many of the dogs online were actively being adopted) and couldn't answer many of our questions. Upon arriving to the shelter we felt as though the staff was super friendly, (except for the manager) but still did not know much about the dogs, even getting the names wrong of the dogs we were looking at. When we decided to move forward with adopting the paperwork took upwards of an hour and a half while I waited in the car with our other dog whom had to come meet our future new family member (which we informed them would be an issue over the phone since she is also a rescue and has separation anxiety.) The overall way this shelter is run appears rather unorganized, although we are thrilled to have a new member of our family, I do hope the manager/business owner takes some time to reflect, as well as accountability on the image they're putting out there of themselves instead of just attacking people in the comments for their negative reviews.

So I felt that I needed to look for a local vet instead. Four days ago I took my cat to a different, local vet (It was NOT Family Pet) to have a skin condition looked at and treated.... and that visit was one of my worst experiences with any veterinary hospital. The only good thing was that my cat was handled kindly throughout the examination. THEREFORE, I've decided that I am returning to Family Pet. It's over an hours' drive away from where I now live, but their level of care is worth it. Dr. Sue Mowcomber has always treated my pets - and me - with kindness and compassion. She also let me be with them while she examined them and she always explained her recommended treatments (what they were, why she chose certain options and she answered my questions). Family Pet's prices were always very fair, too. After what I just experienced at a local vet, I wish I'd never left Family Pet. Hopefully that will be remedied just as soon as I can get an appointment with Family Pet.

The thing that struck me most was when our doggo was showing her age and, we thought, prepping herself for the rainbow bridge, the staff provided direction to us for pain management, diet, etc that helped give our dog at least another really good, happy year. Other vets I have been to, good and bad, would put several options and then say "well, what do you think is best?" How would I know, I'm not a vet. I've watched every episode of Doc McStuffins but that is as far as it goes. The guidance and direction went all the way to the end when we eventually had to say that last goodbye. They knew it was time and were gentle and understanding that it just sucks and though you'll always want one more walk or snuggle on the couch, it's not fair to your friend who is in pain with no relief in sight. Today I went to pick up my new buddy from a procedure. On the counter there was a candle and a nice note asking people to be mindful that someone was saying that hard farewell. It was just another way that shows me that they care about their clients regardless of how many legs they have and inspired me to write this review.

I called on a Friday and left a message to inquire about having my 30 lb Icelandic Sheepdog groomed. I received a text message from Lucas on Sunday following up. When I told him the size and breed of my dog, he replied that they cannot currently accommodate new customers with longer-haired breeds, as the groomers are booked months in advance and they can't keep up with demand. Lucas was professional and apologetic and for that I'm appreciative. Being in a position to turn away customers and income is a good problem to have for any business, and I hope that they continue to see high demand for their services. However, from the customer perspective, the reality is that I called a business requesting a service, and I was turned away. Unless you're a nightclub, that type of treatment, as necessary as it may seem in the short-term, doesn't bode well for long-term success. I still have a dog that needs to get groomed, and I'll have to take my business elsewhere. In doing so, I'll likely recount the experience of being turned away to other dog owners, and as any business owner knows, word-of-mouth is crucial to success. For the future, I'd recommend the team take a different course of action than to simply turn people away- rather, advise on the lengthy wait time, offer to make an appointment, no matter how far out, and offer to call if cancellations arise. I would have greatly appreciated that courtesy and felt as if they really wanted to earn my business. Instead, I was left feeling shut out and as though this business couldn't be bothered to accept my money. At the end of the day, simply saying "sorry, can't do it" to a customer, no matter how necessary it may feel and how politely you deliver the message, will always leave a bad taste in their mouth. They'll tell others about that bad taste, and they'll likely never return.

Luna had a great time during her visit. It was her first time to the groomer at just under 7 months old; her undercoat is still developing and her overcoat is only just starting to come in. We learned that it was the first Belgian Tervuren that Bubbly Pup has groomed, and it was evident they really did their homework and studied her breed for a perfect approach to her grooming. Yelp has hidden four positive reviews because it deemed them unhelpful? Little known fact, you can pay yelp to remove or bury negative reviews.... This is repulsive as are some of these reviews. They have outdoor areas for excersize and socialization. They have indoor areas for quiet time and rest. They have full time daycare during the week and boarding on the weekends. They keep everything clean and are great with the dogs. When one of my dogs recently passed she collected a bunch of pictures from our dog spending time there and had an amazingly personal blanket created with pictures of him as well as sending a sympathy card and flowers. Whoever said she wasn't personal or good with dogs should be ashamed of themselves. Cyber bullying is for the weak.
