We bought some of their prepared foods like Hungarian beef goulash, cabbage rolls stuffed with chicken and rice, as well as lamb and beef pierogis. They have nice cakes, chocolates, ice cream, smoked fish, all kinds of sausages and cheese, roast pork, chicken shish kabobs, fruit juices, teas etc. The prices are fair too. My kid and I found the beef goulash and the lamb and beef pierogis/meat pies very delicious. The cabbage rolls were so-so. read more

As for the meats the source of the beef is not made available, I know what cut it is by looking at it but information like USDA grade, hormone free and what was the cow fed are crucial information for me in selecting any livestock for my consumption. Some fresh fruit or vegetables would give you one more block in the food pyramid, but again this "palace" is focused on questionable meats and processed packaged goods. They're still setting up, but it's looking delicious inside. We were waiting for dinner from Juicy Platters down the road, so we walked on over (about 30 seconds up the block) to buy a drink for our meal and to check out the commotion. This Russian-esque/European specialty market is still in the process of opening, but I'm happy with what I see. These fair-lawn Ruskees(sp?Pc?) house some interesting dishes. We saw smoked pork loin, handmade chicken sausages, even some tongue. It looks intimidating but at the same time very Mmmmm. (definitely trying some of these out) They offer Kefir milk, side salads, and foreign sodas (not crazy expensive either). I got a bottle of Russian soda...it had no discernible English writing on it. However, I was in luck, its logo was picture of a smiling golden cartoon boy holding a shimmering key...I figured this was a good sign. Kid looked happy. So, I tried the soda. After suppressing the urge to overthrow the government for communist purposes, I realized the soda tasted a lot like Ramune soda(the one with the marble). It was double the size of a ramune for only $1.29. Can't argue with that. They had fair prices, unique selections of food, and healthy side salads. This place isn't for everyone though, you have to have a sense of adventure when you buy something and don't really know what it is. Plus the in house butcher may be too much for some. I'm so glad I was able to make the time today. BE WARNED - this is about as Russian Specialty as it gets, and Russian Specialty is NOT for the faint of heart. But with my beloved Eagle Provisions a memory, and as a fan of both cooking and eating this sort of food on occasion (I'm Ukrainian, Polish and Slav by birth) this place is a GOLD MINE. Palmeni (meat dumplings), Vareniki (potato dumplings) are just the tip of the glorious iceberg of their dumpling freezer. So many kinds of kolbasy my head was spinning. Kolbanasy too - in pork AND veal. Brown bread - YES, folks, BROWN BREAD. Caviar, a bakery your Baba would love and fish, fish - ye GODS, the bits I would have taken home for soup tonight had I the presence of mind to bring a cooler bag! I can see some of your eyes glazing over with confusion - let me make this clear: if you DON'T know Russian food, this isn't for you. And if you KNOW Russian food, but don't know Russian, you're going to have to ask for help... and this is a challenge here, as these are real Russians AND... this is real Russian food. I'd say 90% of the packaged food - including the most exquisite aisle of smoked fish of all varieties is labeled in Cyrillic. PLUS (another challenge) their extraordinary deli counter of salads and prepared meals (golubky like I make myself!) labels their food in Russian terms - up to and including hummous (which is spectacular). I enjoy this store because it sells foods I've never seen anywhere else. I am American and have found the staff friendly. Here's a tip--if you want the salespeople to smile at you, smile at them first. It makes me chuckle that the staff assumes all the customers speak Russian. Bought some Russian food and drinks there. Food was obviously not fresh and the soda drinks literally exploded while opening. The taste of all food and drinks is sour which means it is right on the due date or behind it. Once I complained about it I was given all the possible excuses by the manager, but nothing was changed or returned. Unlike the two other russian stores nearby, the Broadway Food Palace is pleasantly spacious. The hot food is ok, but I think it is a bit overpriced. They do have a very nice dairy section though, with some unusual, and interesting selections always showing up, like organic goat milk for example. They also have a mini butcher shop! Generally good service and traditional Russian meals. They have a large variety or desserts, deli meats, smoked/dried fish, cheese, hot prepared foods. The Blinchiki are always hot , always fresh. The staff is generally friendly. The store is usually crowded, always take a number and wait to be called. I highly suggest taking a walk all the way down and working your way back so you get everything you want and don't miss when they bring something hot out. Freezer has a good variety of pelmeni. It helps if you speak the language , but if you don't - someone ( if not the staff themselves) will be able to help. There is also a nice variety of Russian candy. They also provide catering, all my large parties at home are catered from here, very good food from Mango Lobster salad to duck foe gras. My Russian friend who I used to work with used to bring me caviar and blini from this place. Husband and I went last week. Need to go back because we ate all the caviar. I thought the place was cool. I was a client of that store for a very long time. However, I am very dissapointed to write that type of review. The place is extremely unfriendly and not customer oriented. I will never receive what you want, becuse they have "RULES". Ruke is simple - they must to sell you a worst piece of anything. It could be lefyover of salad, leftover of cold cut, leftover of cookies. Today I was trying to buy "zapekanka" - very famous in that place. The slaesgirl took one piece, that had burnt corners, then she selected another piece of the same type, which is also only 70% good and the rest has to be dropped. I asked for management and was presented with another girl, who said - there are rules. Basically, the rule is, for MY MONEY - they sell what THEY WANT. Pretty good Russian deli with a large selection for this side of the river. Can get chaotic at times and the customers, usually Russian expats, think that this is a free for all.... Like in Russia. You get my drift. It is old school and gets those types of customers (grouchy and pushy). I like the food, but for real...could the clerks speak English a little better? My family has shopped here for about 3.5 years. I think everyone has different tastes and this store works hard to offer quality and variety at a fair price. I have to disagree with previous comments about the meat department. It is like an old fashioned butcher shop. Excellent cuts and fresh -- my hubby comes from a farm family in the Midwest and would know! As far as the staff goes, my family and I treat all people with respect and get it in return. Just because people of a different background than me, does not make them rude. In fact. the staff will answer questions about products and labels -- You just need to ask! Very disappointed. Came in on Saturday purchased over 50$ worth of items yet 2 of them were spoiled. One item had mold on it I was so disappointed because this was my favorite dessert when I was a child and I was really looking forward to having it. The other was my favorite salad (olive) and I have to say it was horrible it also tasted like it was spoiled and too much mayo, maybe it was the mayo that was spoiled. The food here is not for everyone. Nothing is greasy or canned. Considering that majority of the population living in the United States has breakfast, lunch and Dinner at McDonalds Wendy's etc. the food at BROADWAY FOOD PALACE is far from fatty or greasy. One Sat. night, our friends (3rd generation Americans from Belarus. He is a lawyer, she is a Journalist) and my husband, also 3rd generation American, asked me to go with them to this store to help to understand the products that they are selling. I never been there before, I never knew about that store, finally, I live in Edison and can go to the stores in my area, but I was ready to drive there and become their customer, as much as my American friend, who lives around the corner. We all were impressed with the store's appearance. Clean, good organized, meat dept. looks wonderful. We went through the store. I explained my friends what the products are. They loved it. We also bought few things and were ready to become their customers. When we were heading to a cashier, I accidently dropped and cracked a 7 dollar plastic jar with black currant jelly. Oops. At the same moment like a Jack in Box appeared some poorly dressed handsome man with a look that would scare anybody. I thought he will start beating me up. I immediately apologized. He said "You broke, you pay!" I asked in Russian: Should I clean the mess as well? He answered: I'll do it. You apologized. It meant that if I wouldn't, I'll have to clean a mess as well. My husband looked at me and said "Do you want to tell me that he makes you pay for that?" My three Americans were bewildered. Stan mumbled: It's a bad business....The "big boss" who appeared to be just a worker there, hid in the office. We paid and left. On Mon. I called Garry, the owner. He was not helpful at all. He said that if he would be there, this wouldn't be happening. He was like an eel on the frying pan...., giving me examples of old people who open jars to steal pickles, who open coffee jars to still coffee. He was telling me about customers who do not watch their children and break things.... So, he said that they made a policy: "You break it - you pay for it". I said that as an owner he has to make sure that customers see it written and hanging somewhere.... I was expecting that he will offer me to come, that he will make it up for me. I lost nothing, $7 wouldn't make a hole in my budget, but he lost customers with as he writes on his website have genetic memory of European food. I wished him success in his endeavors and next time in Fair Lawn I will go to less organized, but as good B&B International.
