This review is long overdue. I've had the pleasure of going to Priscilla at Brogan and Son several times and her consistency and excellence is unmatched. When I had a full beard, Priscilla did a great job cleaning it up to improve the shape while not sacrificing length. It was an affordable beard trim and much better than what I found at other places in SF before going to Brogan and Son. Earlier this week, I went to a salon to get a high-end haircut for my wedding. The guy totally butchered my hair and left it terribly uneven. My go-to spot for a haircut is undergoing seismic retrofit so I figured Priscilla at Brogan and Son might be able to help (I hadn't gotten a haircut here previously). Priscilla did an AMAZING job cleaning things up while keeping as much length as possible. It was night and day better than the other place and I now feel confident for my wedding. She also cleaned up my goatee and it looks perfect. I'll now be going exclusively to Brogan and Son for both my facial hair and my haircut. I highly recommend Brogan and Son. read more

What a disappointment! They're web site talks about how they provide a relaxed, comfortable environment. "A chance to experience luxury", a place where you to "enhances your artful conversational skills". What a joke! That couldn't be further from the truth! Priscilla barely said two words to me. She just scowled me the whole time and acted like she was annoyed by my presence. The other barber did nothing but drop F-bombs every third word and explain how stupid all the other clients were who left bad reviews. The hair cut was slipshod and underwhelming, and I don't think I look any better than I did when I went in. I'm still dusting hairs off of me and my mustache (which is the whole reason I went in) looks weaker than it did before the appointment Don't waste your money here. I have been going here for years and have been quite happy with both the haircuts and the level of service. But what happened this time is not acceptable and in no way excusable. I came in for my usual trim. I left bald. How would you feel if one week before you long awaited vacation and wedding anniversary you had to be bald? Sure some guys don't mind it and rock the look, but it should be an option. I did not get one. I am fucking bald for my anniversary and that is simply fucked up. So, be warned, you might walk out with a nice cut or you might walk out bald. I would not recommend this place to anyone as you might leave looking and feeling bad about yourself. Got my (men's, medium length) hair cut at Brogan a few weeks ago and was very impressed with how friendly everyone was! Unfortunately, the cut was one of the worst I've ever received. I do NOT have the classic short-men's barber hairstyle (short on sides, longer top, fade, razor cut, etc.) and was hoping that my barber could work with my style. Instead, he carelessly took scissors to all sides and was done within 10 minutes. Would NOT recommend coming here for a style if you have anything longer than extremely short hair. I give 2-stars since the other customers with shorter styles looked good, so it may have been my mistake coming here with longer hair. But my barber should have told me that longer hair isn't their area of expertise, instead of butchering my look. read more

I booked a buzz cut and said I just wanted the sides faded from a 0 to high on my head. I said I was growing out the top but he convinced me to cut it. The haircut was a total mess. He missed 2 spots (meaning I had to return to get them fixed). He didn't cut my hair down to a zero, and I'm still seeing spots where it's uneven. Going back today for my money back and to have them fix my hair for the 3rd time. They were very nice, just not a quality buzz cut, particularly for $50. read more

I've gone to this barber shop a few times when my normal barber is out of town or isn't open and i need a fresh cut, that being said, Pricella is a absolute magician/ wizard with her cuts. I'm not sure how we arrived at 5 stars for this place. I had a shabby experience that lends itself to 2-3+ stars, which I'll share without using names. I liked my barber a lot, I just don't think his skills are all that great. Parking is difficult and expensive. Metered spots are $6+ per hour. I'll agree with your suspicions that I've lived in the suburbs too long and need to get out more but that's ridiculous. Haircuts are insanely expensive and rival a woman's cut and color at a salon. It's a barbershop for the love of Mike! I am a creature of habit and get a bald fade and a beard trim everytime I get cut. Bald fade can be tricky and I understood that before we got started. When I asked my new barber if he felt comfortable doing a bald fade, he paused for way too long and said something like "I'm ok with it" which was not what you want to hear while sitting in a chair. I knew it was better to switch up the plans at this point so I asked for a taper and that's what I got. It was ok. Not great or amazing and it wasn't terrible or the worst cut of all time. Just ok. Beard trim was again, ok. Not great or good but ok. The cut was $40 and beard trim an additional $15. My barber was kind enough to comp the beard trim and I definitely appreciated that and I tipped him well despite my displeasure with the end result. Maybe I chose the wrong barber or maybe what I need doesn't fit his skill set well. What I do know is that I like this shop. I like the vibe and the energy and the sports talk radio playing. I just can't see myself spending $40 + tip for a cut and an additional $12 to park. I tried something new and was reminded that being a creature of habit isn't a bad thing at all. read more

This was not the first thing I wanted to review today, but it IS the most significant, so it gets "first dibs." Think on this, now. The LAST time I got a decent Michael-Jordan-quality 'skull-shave' was probably back in 2008. TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT! CHECK IT! Up until that point, I had two people who were not certified barbers...myself and my partner, Bear. Bear does a pretty good job and is very careful about not hurting me. Me, as my own barber? Well, let me put it to you this way.... Have you seen HOSTEL? In any case, Bear 'found' Brogan and Son around the corner from where we're staying at Club Quarters. He was actually the one who chatted up Tim on my behalf, when he was outside and saw us looking in the window. He needed a cut, too, but I was in DESPERATE need of some "scalp TLC." When we finally went back later, I realized that they don't take credit cards, so we had to dash across the street to the ATM before returning and settling into our chairs. Tim, being the specialist for Black hair and how to cut it, took me into his capable hands. Very friendly, personable and skilled, once I told him I wanted a "Michael Jordan", I didn't need to say anything else about the cut for the next thirty minutes...though we conversed about everything else. Tim told me from the very beginning, that his goal is to get his customers to come back, not just to come in as a "one-off." The way I looked and felt after I left the shop, after a nice hot lather shave, complete with hot towels and a scalp massage as the finishing touch, I just have a message for Tim: I will be living in Walnut Creek, but even if they have barber shops there - which I seriously doubt - I know where I'll be getting MY cuts from. 425-C Battery Street, at LEAST once a month. And attention, BMWH (Black Men With Hair - or even without, just like me) or ANY GUY with hair, for that matter...If you're in town and need a full cut or a quick fix-up...don't go to anybody else BUT Tim. This place is awesome, it's in the middle of financial district, and like others mentioned, they always offer you a beer when you start and they always wrap it up with a warm scented towel on your face + a head massage. I love coming here, and almost always walk out very very happy, feeling perfectly fine spending $50 on a haircut. The guys are super chill, I say hello when I walk by and run into them on the sidewalk. Regarding cuts, KEN IS AWESOME, HE CUTS LIKE A BOSS and he's stylish / chill / badass. This place loses a star because of Tim. Ken was booked and I got Tim. This ruined my day. TIM SUCKS. He really sucks. I cannot stress enough that he sucks. DO NOT GET STUCK WITH TIM. There's some reviews on here that love him, and some that hate him. People probably love him because he's a nice OG talker, but if mutually exclusive, I would much rather a nice & even haircut + even sideburns over a mediocre conversation. read more

Second time here. First time was about 3 months ago and the barber was a European guy (first chair on the right side, sorry I'm spacing on the name), very friendly, and skilled. I would give him 5 minus 1 for only accepting cash (seriously, 2018! Get with it!). His cut was on point and it grew well over time. Today, my second cut with Priscilla (only one available at 12.30 via online booking process). This is 1 minus 1 for still not accepting cash (which brings the average of both cuts to 2 ). Not a word spoken, does not understand the shape of human body (it's not smooth and even all around, at least not mine), and did not give depth to the cut, also accentuating a growing bald spot. Not her fault it's there, but a skilled professional knows how to minimize the visibility. Aidan, the owner and CHO (Chief Hair Officer) here at Brogan & Son made me look really dapper and I felt very comfortable stepping in front of the camera. This was my second visit at this place - the first time I simply walked in and was able to get an appointment right here and there. This time around, I made an appointment online, as I wanted it to be really early. Aidan does take appointments starting at 7am, which is great for the crowd working in downtown San Francisco. Aidan is a really nice and chatty chap - just what you want a barber to be! In fact, my biggest pet-peeve about going to the hair dresser is that I never know what to talk about. Had a haircut here. I went home and realized there's a spot that was completely ignore and 1 inches square of hair was 0.5 inches longer. I had to cut my own hair to fix after having a 50 bucks haircut. Also realized these things. 1. Asked for a fade, no fade 2. Uneven cut on the side. 3. Asked him to cut it a bit shorter, and he gave me attitude about how this is a different haircut and if I really want it. 4. The overall hair cut just look shitty compared to another place I used to go. 5. I have visited twice. Once for a regular men's haircut and again for a neck shave. The prices listed on their website are a bit misleading. They give a range of prices, $36-$45 for a haircut and $10 for a neck trim. I have straight hair, no curls, no crazy styling requests. I think it's a pretty easy head to cut, albeit a little oddly shaped. I was charged the $45 for the haircut and $15 for the neck trim. I did not feel the haircuts were worth that much, so I won't be returning. Both haircuts took less time than advertised on their website. Haircuts come with a hot lather neck shave, talcum powder and they brush off your arms afterwards. The staff is extremely friendly and seem to have a loyal and happy customer base. The shop is cozy, welcoming and decked out with sports memorabilia. There is no front desk to welcome you, so if you walk in you have to make yourself known. Cash only. read more

I came to brogan and son because of all the good reviews,although what concerned was that all the good reviews on yelp was for Francesco and no one else So I called and tried to get an appointment with Francesco but was informed that he wasn't working that day, but I thought to myself that other barbers must be good too so I set up an appointment later that day I was welcomed and everyone was nice, but what alarmed me right away was that I saw Francesco right there in the shop working my appointment was at 2:30pm but they were still finishing up so I had to wait till about 2:45ish which was no big deal cause I had that day off, Tim called me over once he was done and he was super friendly and made conversation, but 3 more people came into the shop once I sat down and I can tell that Tim was rushed, so the end result was that one side of my fade wasn't lined up correctly and my hair is sticking up and the back of my head is very choppy... I didn't really notice this till I got home because he sprayed water on my hair and didn't dry it once it was done... the cut took him only 15mins and I was done about the same time as someone who was there way before me Then he said My cut would be $52 which was weird because online said $42 to $45 and would include massage and other perks, I didn't get any of those and I only needed the sides and back cut because I wanted to grow out my top more, Tim said it's because he had to do extra stuff to my hair not sure what that is, but he only ended up charging me $50 which was "nice" of him I guess Overall I don't feel like I got the same type of attention that other people got and my cut was subpar and was lied to, so I won't be back, which is too bad because I wanted to make this my regular go to spot read more

I came here for my haircut last week for the first time, and I have mixed feelings about the experience. It started with a nice greeting from the staff. My appointment was at 9:30am and I arrived earlier and ended up going to starbucks while waiting. My appointment started a few minutes later because the barber Francesco was still working on his scheduled appointment. Francesco is no doubt an experienced cutter with decent technique but I would have liked to get more consultation. I didn't get the friendliest impression. but what really erked me was that I rushed out because I was told my 30mins was up. Didn't know the experience was timed to the tee. Sort of an overdue review, I've been coming to Brogan and Son's for almost 6 months and it's time I give this establishment and my barber a review. This barbershop has a very clean and simple setup, each barber has their own station. All the barbers are super nice, they always greet you and are always willing to help. Now to my barber Francesco, he's been cutting my hair ever since I started coming to Brogan and Son's. I never really had a good barber before but ever since Francesco cut my hair I was hooked. The first time came in I showed him a reference photo and he knew exactly what I wanted. He took his time from start to finish. From the haircut to the styling, he was very meticulous in his craft. He was always double checking his work and making fine adjustments when needed. Francesco is a chill guy and easy to talk to. Throughout the cut, he gave me advice on how to take care of my hair and how to style it. He's also fast cutting hair about half an hour and you're out the door, but at the same time he is meticulous and makes sure everything perfect. After reading reviews of Brogan and Son, I decided to book myself in for a haircut although I thought $36 was a little expensive. I was greeted with a beer which was a welcome change to what I have experienced previously. The sport memorabilia on the walls made it more welcoming and added to the ambience/vibe. My hairdresser (I don't want to name names) was extremely friendly. I had images of the type of haircut I was looking for - the same that I provided my previous barber with. There had never been any issues working off this image. However, I was extremely disappointed with the result. In conversation with another hairdresser, I overheard my hairdresser mention that he was due to go on vacation soon. I'm not sure whether this contributed to the subpar haircut. There was no attempt at the end to even make it resemble what I had requested with styling gel or whether I was satisfied with the job. It was a shoddy job, which was a shame as the place itself looked the part. My hairdresser was friendly and seemed genuine so perhaps it was an off day (especially as the reviews do seem consistently good on here). But I ended up paying over $40 before the tip and I wouldn't be able to justify paying a premium price again. read more

Ok... let's start with Tim Hammons because he's the main reason I come here. Tim just rules. He gives a great haircut, but he also is just a very pleasant person to talk with... makes the entire experience about you and your interests and really makes you feel welcome. Second thing I'd mention is Aidan... he's the owner and one of the barbers. The place really cleaned up its act and became waaaay better after he took over. All the barbers hustle and have fun while keeping it very professional. You can tell they enjoy working there and this makes a big difference. Now, full disclosure, I've only ever let Tim cut my hair, but all the men and women working there seem very capable and experienced... this is not a place where new barbers get started... more for established ones. Lastly, they give you free beer or bourbon while you're there. Certainly not a necessity, but I love it and it makes the experience even more enjoyable. Only heads up is that this is really a place geared towards men's cuts... I'm sure they would do a great job with women's cuts if asked, but I've only ever seen men getting their hair cut there. The women who work there are fantastic however (classy and funny) so I'm sure a women would feel welcome, they just might not have all the equipment you'd get at a salon. Long story short. Went in for a simple men's haircut from Tim. Asked for a mild fade on the side, since I want some preserved length. For the top, I asked for a slight trim as well, keeping it longer than sides. But all of this doesn't matter, because the result didn't meet the request. One, there was no fade. But the real problem was in the fundamentals. He simply used a clipper on the sides, and that was it. He completely ignored the hair behind the ears and along the sides. No trim of the sideburns (this was supposed to be a slight fade, too). The top of the hair wasn't much better. The bang area was left uneven. If this was a $10 place in the mission, I would have much more sympathy. But for a $40 haircut ($50 with tip) - not too pleased. Especially since I had to clean it up myself at home. I could have gotten the same cut from Supercuts - no joke. And the cost would have been next to nothing. Tim even mentioned after I described the haircut I wanted that he'd been doing this for 10 hours day for 20 years, and that I'll look fresh when he's done. I can't speak for other hairstyles, but don't go if you have an undercut and need a clean fade on the side. Most everyone there is very polite, so I'm not excited about leaving one star. But I did not get a $42 hair cut. I got a mediocre $10 super cuts haircut in a real nice chair. I left with a clipper line on the side of my head above my ear that prompted one of my coworkers to ask whether I'd had it included on purpose - no, I don't razor lines into my head anymore, I'm not 17 and those days are gone. It's just a real shitty blend. I returned to have it fixed, walked 10 blocks in the pouring rain, didn't really have any other choice. The woman who tried to fix it at first said she wasn't sure what she could do because "it looks like maybe I have a scar there and that's why there's a line." Spoiler alert: there is no scar on the side of my head. Original barber showed up to blend it back in before she got to work, but there was no apology extended for the inconvenience. I had texted pictures to my friend (an excellent barber) and he advised me not to go back because they might mess it up further. I chanced it because I can't walk around with a clipper line on my head. I don't even write reviews, but I checked these for this shop and made my decision based off of them so I feel like I owe it to the next "michael g" to write a truthful account. I don't mind cashing out for quality work, but when I'm left $52 in the hole (tip included) with a shitty fade that I probably could've done better myself with some Wahl clippers, I feel like I have to say something. read more
