First wandered into Nigel's shop about a year ago when I started working downtown. Hands down the best hair cut and all around experience I've had. Relaxed, quiet setting. Nigel is easy to talk to and knows what he's doing. Have always struggled to describe what I want, and even when I figure it out I feel like I usually walk out with something different than what I had in mind. With Nigel I get a good, consistent cut every time. I recently made the mistake of letting someone else cut my hair, and when I went to Nigel he practically refused the money (seeing as it was clear I had just paid to have it done). Class act. Prices are reasonable for the E3 location, what with those rents! - they just raised the price of a cut from $28 to $30 last month, and it was $28 for a while, so still good in my book. Nigel is a real pro, he knows how to give a great-looking cut in all kinds of styles, he's not just one of these "buzz-and-go" guys you find other places. My hair always grows out great after I see Nigel, which didn't always happen with other barbers I saw before - to me that's the sign of real expertise. In terms of Covid, you wear a mask, he wears a face shield, and best of all they only schedule 1 person at a time, so you get a completely private haircut. I can pay $8 for some random Chinese lady to cut my hair unevenly or I can pay $30 to get a haircut from Aidan who gives me a clean consistent haircut every time. I just moved to SF and am in need of a good barber to keep me looking sharp for interviews and what-have-you. This place came pretty highly reviewed, albeit for a certain barber named Aidan. When I went in he was on vacation, but I figured I'd give the place a chance anyway. Sat down with a guy named Tony who greeted me with a warm smile, but that was probably the best part of the experience... He didn't really ask me any questions about what I was looking for, when my last cut had been etc. He just kind of went to town and then asked me if I wanted Gel in my hair (before I had seen the cut because for some reason the chairs are faced away from the mirror and towards a 20 year old taped TLC special.) It didn't look great and wasn't nearly short enough so I told him more specifically what I wanted. In the end it looked terrible and I didn't want to risk letting him fix it so I paid and left. Went to a place closer to my house where I got it somewhat salvaged for half the price. Pretty sure this guy does not have his barber license because it was the worst haircut I've ever gotten, supercuts included. read more

Usually don't write bad reviews but my experience was not great. I am new in town and was looking for the right place. I told the barber what I wanted ("short on the side and don't touch the top"). The barber was a bit condescending in his reply. During the cut I made a comment on what I want again and he ignored it. Instead of going slowly he just started to chop everything of without showing progress. The barber also forgot to blow off the loose cut hair on my neck and cheeks, before I left chair and only did so at my direct request. The barber experience is about the small things, caring and treating clients like million dollars. Unfortunately did not feel like this barber was there to make me look good. The cut was not worth it and it ruined my day. Will not be coming back. read more

O man. Definitely watch out for the old guy who's hard to understand what he's saying. Probably the worst haircut of my life. Took about 15 minutes to do the first "cut", asked for a mirror to check it out which it seemed like he didn't even want to give me. Told him to take some more off and even it out a bit. Took another look 5 minutes later, still looked like crap. Told him to make it shorter because it still looked like he didn't do much and I had to remind him to cut my sideburns also. After getting tired of sitting there, I told him it looked fine only to find out when I looked in the mirror at home he just kept cutting one area on the top of my head and left the back almost the same length as when I walked in. Also didn't even cover up the back of the neck when I asked him to cut some more, allowing all the little pieces of hair to go down my shirt and itch like hell the rest of the work day. I guess thats what I get for trying to get my hair cut on my lunch break at a place I've never been before. The other guy sounds decent, but don't even think about letting this guy touch your head. I really like this place. A hole in the wall shop. A true barber shop. For the past two times I have gotten my haircut here Tony has cut my hair. Well I think his name is Tony. Not really sure. But bottom line is I liked my hair cut both times and that means a lot because I am a hard guy to please when it comes to my hair. Image is everything! If you're looking for a classic hair cut. Nothing too styled or textured I recommend coming to this place and having the old guy with the gray hair and mustache cut you. But if you're going to be a little bitch about your haircut and want it all styled and texturized and shizz then this is not a place for you. I recommend L'Shear for that. I really like the atmosphere of this shop. Its has a real old skool feel to it. They watch KQED which is one of my favorite channels to watch and then they have VCR tapes on the counter. I haven't seen those in a while. They even have penthouse magazines. Like I said its a real man's man barber shop. Again. I say if you want a classic clean cut haircut Pro Style is the place to go. He is not only exceptionally personable, friendly and engaging he is also extremely talented at what he does. At any given haircut, you can always expect 30 full minutes of detailed service -- from an attentive haircut, barber neck shave, hot towel/ tea-tree oil face treatment and quick massage for a bargain price of $29! Great men's haircut for the price in SF. Either Ed or Nigel are the guys to see. Old school approach, take the time to do it right, and style it based on your head shape and what looks fresh. I also like the gel they use, KMS. I buy it now for my own use at home. Nigel will warm lather the neckline and sideburns with shave cream/straight razor, but Ed works more magic with the blow dryer and finishing touches. I've never had a blow dryer involved getting a haircut in my life, but it actually makes a difference on certain types of hair styles/hair types. My thick italian hair needs it with the gel and I think it's solid. read more

NB: this is only a review of Aidan, and not the place generally. I'm a big fan of Aidan Brogan. He's the only one who seems to have a devoted clientele, whereas the other guys (old-timers) sort of sit back and watch PBS shows from the early 1990's on their VCR. Aidan gives a good cut for $29 (cheap for the fi-di). I'm not sure if he's exactly a stylist or anything, but he does exactly what you want, with good results. The best part is that he finishes off the haircut in style: a hot shaving cream, straight-blade shave of the neck, a few moments with a shoulder massage machine, and a hot towel. In and out in 30 minutes. What more could you ask for? Actually, I could ask for better reading material.
