We went here twice for dinner while visiting in Homer because it was SO DELICIOUS! We had plenty of raw oysters, clams, the pan roast, the creole (which I like a better than the pan roast because I like the creole flavor more...both are delicious!), and one night we had the rockfish ceviche (served with chips), which if it's available...GET IT! Drool! Clams came with bread. Pan roast and creole came with rice and bread. I really liked their bread too. Didn't have their baked oysters but they looked yummy! Wanted to try their creme brûlée but we got Carmen's Gelato down the street both times after dinner because also yum! There is seating inside. First come first serve. Small place but worth the wait. We waited both days. They serve drinks and food to the outside through a window and there is some outside seating. We just always wanted to be inside..it was a little rainy. This is a completely biased review as my husband works here and helped his best friend (the owner) get this place off the ground during the economic shit storm of 2020. However they are totally killing it and providing delicious food, great drinks (the Sauvignon Blanc is my personal choice) and top service. Go here if you can if you are on the Homer spit! Very tiny restaurant with limited seating inside. The outdoor seating didn't seem to be happening the day we were there. We waited for awhile but it was worth it. Super fresh oysters and we watched them season and steam the shrimp right across the bar from us. Prices were Alaska July tourist season prices but worth it. Our travel partners found the Broken Oar Oyster bar earlier that morning on their walk and we will be forever grateful! This Place was amazing. We came to homer last summer to see the bears at two national parks and would come here every night for dinner and drinks-which was truly magical. We were visiting after Labor Day weekend so most restaurants had closed. Thankfully this place was open! We ordered at the window and sat outside, they had several tables. Views were incredible, as was the food. We had raw oysters and then both of the "entree" dishes (pan roast and creole?) which came with rice and toasted bread. They also had beer and wine. This is one of those places that may get overlooked on Homer Spit, because it's slightly off to itself, it's in a building with another business, and it's small. Other places are bigger, have the big signs, or offer more menu variety....but there's no way this should get overlooked, because it's amazing. We had raw oysters, then oysters baked with garlic butter and Rockefeller style. Finished our feeding frenzy with a bowl of Seafood Creole that was to die for. We go to New Orleans on a regular basis and this creole beat anyone I have ever had there including Emeril's! Perfectly spiced and the seafood was cooked to gourmet standards! Our party of four visited Broken Oar on 7/26/2020. This place is fantastic! I haven't been to Homer in quite a few years but thought we should give this place a try. It's on the west side of the spit, regardless what google says. It's used to be some other oyster place but is under new ownership, Ryan, but I didn't catch his last name. It's a small joint with bar seating inside and a massive deck outside. We lucked out the day we visited and it was sunny and warm so we opted for the deck. They have nice selection of wine, beer and a few spritzers. We had two dozen raw oysters from Peterson Bay. These are the best oysters I've ever had in Alaska. I was blown away. We also shared the creole dish. It's a tomato based lobster sauce with local shrimp and scallops with a scoop of rice. This dish was a show stopper. It was fresh and vibrant and the flavor didn't over power the fresh, perfectly cooked seafood. It's so easy to over cook the seafood in dishes like this but Broken Oar got it just right. The service was wonderful as well. Monica was our server and she was warm, attentive and knew the menu inside and out. We never waited for anything. Truly this was a culinary experience I was least expecting and thoroughly enjoyed. The meal was not cheap but you honestly get what you pay for. Thank you Ryan and Monica for making our trip. I've been here twice now, and the food is great. But today upon getting there 10-15 minutes after they opened they already couldn't handle the orders. It was taking 45 min to get food out for people who arrived on that time frame, and they have a very limited menu so you'd think they could serve quickly. They also left a guy who just wanted to order another beer while waiting on his food standing there for a good 15 minutes, as people lined up behind him. They need to figure out how to streamline the service. read more
