A couple of friends and I were making our way through restaurant week options and stumbled across Bronze Bird's menu, which sounded absolutely stellar. If I was being perfectly honest, when I realized this place was located in the lobby of a hotel, my heart sank. However, the food absolutely blew me away completely and I will never ever ever doubt the quality that restaurants in hotels can provide for the rest of my life. I will add the caveat that when I checked their menu, it appeared as though none of the restaurant week offerings were typically available. Slow Braised Charred Spanish Octopus (4.25/5): The cook on the octopus was incredible; it was beautifully tender without being chewy at all. The slight sweetness of the sweet potato on the plate with the chorizo sauce was an awesome combination as well. Grilled Chimichuro Picanha Steak (5/5): This was the best steak I've ever had in my life. Not only that, this was the best mashed potatoes I've ever had (it's actually parsnip, but it's almost the same thing...). When I realized this wasn't on their real menu, my heart broke. My condolences to anyone who never gets to try this. Caramel and Orange Blossom Rice Cakes (1/5): Okay, they really dropped the ball on this one. The dessert is some hardened form of rice pudding that was so tough, it was physically difficult to break it with the spoon. It was served atop and slightly soaked with some orange blossom sauce that I personally found far too floral. Man, the rest of the food was so mindblowingly good, I forgive them. Last but not least, I have to acknowledge the service. Most of the patrons were at the bar and very few were there to eat a real meal, but the timing of each course was perfectly fluid and I never found myself without a plate in front of me. I came here for lunch on the weekend with a big group of people! We did make a reservation ahead of time, but it was not busy while we were there. Food: Lot of options on the menu, so it was easy to find something to fit everyone's palate. - Pan Fried Bass: Perfect lunch entree size! What a pleasant surprise! To be honest, we only ate here because we had breakfast credit but it turned out to absolutely be one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had in a long time. Disclaimer: This review is for the SD Restaurant Week Menu. I am not sure if these items are part of their regularly scheduled offerings. I had several restaurant week plans fall through so I was looking forward to my Bronze Bird reservation. I had definite and strong misgivings about it being the attached restaurant of a hotel though. When I arrived and checked in for my reservation, I learned that my reservation didn't show up in their system. Furthermore, I learned that their restaurant week offerings didn't start till 4PM, something that was not communicated to me at any point in the reservation making process. I still feel bad that they had to set up early for my meal, and I'm also annoyed this wasn't made clear to me. I was seated pretty deep in the restaurant near the window, and the lighting was great. Even my subpar photography captured some pretty nice photos of the food I had there. Service was ... interesting during my time there. No less than three different servers came to my table, and they didn't come in an especially coordinated manner. They were good about clearing my plate after I finished a course, but one sever kept asking me how long I wanted to wait before bringing out my dessert, which was odd. I came during the afternoon and not many other diners were around, but it was weird that so many people showed up at my table. They all felt a bit hesitant as well, as if they were newly hired. The manager, who had come out to explain the reservation and timing confusion, was (of course) profusely apologetic and friendly. The food was a mixed bag, with strong highs and lows. I was shocked when I saw short rib as part of a $30 3-course menu, but upon eating here I realized that the majority of the money probably went to the short rib. First course was a ceviche taco on a jicama wrap. It was a good size for an app, but the flavor wasn't super tasty. They put michelada sauce on top and it was not the move. The seafood tasted mostly of lime, and was still a bit fishy-tasting. Second course was the star of the show: Mezcal braised short rib with saffron potato puree, spicy roast carrots, and broccolini. To be honest, had it not been for this dish I would have given this place 2 stars. The meat was fork tender and a HUGE portion, probably the size of my fist. The saffron potato mash was a revelation, and I will be making all of my mashed potatoes with saffron from now on. Both of these items were a bit light in flavor, but the Mezcal sauce makes up for it. I actually did not like my first bite because I just did not know what to expect with the Mezcal, but I was hooked from the second bite on. It was salty, savory, smoky, and it felt like a good twist on a red wine-braised short rib. The sauce also did something interesting with the saffron flavor in the potatoes, and I really appreciated all the complex flavor in this dish. The fried onions on top of the meat were a nice touch as well. The carrots were tender and not mushy, and the broccolini had a nice crunch. Third course was strawberry tamarind cheese cake with churro dust. After enjoying the complex flavors appreciated above, eating a spoonful of this cheesecake was like getting a blunt, sugary hammer to the face. The cheesecake texture was velvety smooth, but it honestly felt like eating a block of strawberry flavored cream cheese. The berry sauce was too syrupy-sweet (to compensate for the sour berries probably), and I wish there was more churro presence, both for the flavor and for the texture. I was quite stuffed from cleaning my plate of the short rib, but even if I hadn't been so full, I wouldn't have been able to finish this dessert course. I'm glad I got to try Bronze Bird during Restaurant Week, but it's quite far out of my way and I don't foresee myself going to this area just for this restaurant. At $30 for 3 courses, this was one of the better deals this week, in my opinion. While I didn't enjoy my first and third courses as much, I will be definitely thinking about the mezcal braised short rib (and whichever culinary visionary paired it with the saffron potatoes) for a long time. read more

Ate here for breakfast and lunch because I was staying at the hotel. Breakfast, very poor service. Eggs were served cold and runny which was a bad combination and the turkey sausage was also cold. Server never checked how food was and when he cleared a mostly untouched plate, he never thought to ask. Went back for lunch and ordered the hot fried chicken. The food was just as bad as breakfast. It was a burnt chicken patty. The first few bites all around the sandwich were burnt breading with no chicken. One I reached the thin chicken patty, it was overwhelmed still, by the burnt breading. Your basic hotel restaurant, at least for breakfast. So this review is only based on that, not lunch/dinner or bar. We walked in and our server Ernie was nice, he was busy and did it all: seated us, took our order, got and served our food, and we even saw him make a cappuccino for someone. The place is pretty nondescript, very "Westin" hotel, with flat grey walls and hotel lobby style furniture. It is clean though. They had a breakfast buffet for $26 which looked basic but ok. I got the eggs benedict instead ($16 or $18 I think) which was fine., although eggs were on the runnier side. The place looks like it has a nice big bar, but they didn't offer any breakfast cocktails like mimosas or a bloody mary which would have nice. We saw our food sit under a heat lamp for a while, but Ernie really was a one man show so can't blame him. Got our check, he nicely offered coffee to go. read more

Both steaks were not seasoned and under cooked. But they did manage to burn the sear. The ordered temperature was medium and they came out medium rate. One was sent back for a recook. Went there today and waited almost 20 minutes to get seated; there was 1 party of 2 ahead of us and the one table our party of 5 always sits at was empty. The hostess literally told us she needed 10 minutes to get our table ready, which means putting menus and silverware down (10 minutes ?!). Then it took almost another 15 minutes to have get any water and have our order taken. Our food came before our drinks- a margarita (came first alone), bottle of wine and 2 mineral waters. Then the burger I ordered was completely charred on one side so that was all I could taste, but no time to send it back since we had a play. Their fries are delicious and so is most of the food. But absolutely no sense of urgency with meeting the guests needs. Big focus on clearing away the breakfast buffet and dirty tables that were not reseated. I thought "he's busy I'll give him moment"--but nothing for more than five minutes. He even asked the two ladies next to me if they wanted more drinks-- right next to me! He didn't look at me and he didn't say a word. IGNORED ME. The entire bar was filled with non minority patrons. I'm a minority--hmm, it's interesting how I was ignored. The only reason I have two drinks in front of me is another person entered the bar JUST TO ASK ME what I'd like to drink. I made a mistake ordering the wines--I mistakenly asked for white wine instead of red, Javier who actually acknowledged me said it was ok. I appreciated it. The bartender's name who ignored me was Rob. I don't know what your deal is for ignoring me for more than five minutes and not even acknowledging me when you KNOW I wasn't there five minutes ago. You are trained to notice people who come up to the bar for drinks and I'm sure you saw me come up, you just chose to ignore me. I've been here 20 minutes as of this sentence--you haven't even asked me if I'm doing fine with my drinks. Even the two couples who were white got service, a later on, two more patrons, minorities BUT they were men received service without flagging him down. Well wasn't that a b*****. I rarely post reviews on Yelp, but this one deserves it for one unique reason: the charcuterie board! We love them, but so rarely feel like we are getting our money's worth. This one provided ample servings of a unique and delicious variety...and the ever elusive perfect cracker/bread to cheese ratio.
