My husband and I decided to go on a last-minute date night to watch a show at the San Diego Civic Theater and wanted to grab dinner beforehand. We did the "dinner and show" deal with the Westin downtown which is just a 2 minute walk from the Civic Theatre where we watch our niece's ballet. You pay $10 for 5 hours of valet parking and also get 20% off your check which is a great deal. I had the local catch with risotto. The fish was not overcooked and the risotto was perfect. A lot of options for the kids which was a plus. The food is standard American fare but it was good and not too expensive for a hotel restaurant. I came for an early dinner with a friend and ordered the Wagyu Burger and fries and a smoked old fashion. The Wagyu burger was cooked medium rare as requested and had nice cohesion. I think the breakfast would be a better deal if you want to eat a full breakfast. If you just want a little bite, then order from the menu. I love San Diego Restaurant Week & I had to start it off with one of my favorite gems, Bronze Bird. I've been here two years ago and the food amazing for the price point. Ambiance has a modern feel, which blends well with the hotel decor. What I had: Dry Bird - This mocktail has ginger beer and is a nice non alcoholic alternative to add to your meal. This was sweeter than expected and would have preferred a less sweeter drink. Smoked Potato Leek Soup - Warm, comforting and creamy. I liked that it had a taste of bacon in it. Chicken Jidori Scallopini - Perfectly seared and juicy pieces of chicken paired with mushrooms and greens. I had some leftover so I'll be having it again for lunch! Pan Seared Chinook Salmon - This is a fatty salmon but still flaky and light. The salmon isn't pink but the waiter explained that due to the fat content, it's a white color. Kiwi Mille Feuille - This is a flaky dessert with cream in between. It was nicely sweet and you can either pick it up and eat like a taco or use a fork and knife. My wife ordered the short rib tacos. Everything was great. They also give you 20% off if you're going to a show at the Theatre. I read about this and asked the waiter and he gave us the discount without even asking to see our tickets. He mentioned that the Westin hotel (this is attached to the hotel) offers $10 valet parking that is good for 5 hours if you're seeing a show and get your parking ticket validated at the Bronze Bird. They were very attentive to water refills but I found flagging them down to be pretty difficult for other things like getting the check or adding items to our order. Our favorite dishes were the brussels sprouts and the fries on every plate. The brussel sprouts were very crispy, and it came with goat cheese and pancetta. The steak was cooked to medium rare, which was juicy and great. I think the salmon was a little too dry but you guys can make that decision yourself. So I've dined at restaurants in about 12-15 Weston hotels in the US. I was concerned that as this was in Gaslamp that it could be a disappointment. It was. The menu is mediocre. Had the shishito peppers - under seasoned, the Gnocci - also under seasoned, tried the Baja Alfredo - the best of the 3.
