If you need a fix, and you know who you are ex-pat Aussies, then get on down to this tiny little pie shop. Located in the alley of the Santee Lofts off of 7th at Los Angeles it would be easy to drive right by and miss it. Circle around...it's there. Very small interior but giant flavor with every bite so grab one (or many) to go. I had several pies today. Here's the down under. The "Original" which was ground beef. Tasted like mums mince inside and had a proper flaky crust. Really pleasant balanced flavor and easy to eat by hand. The "Pepper Steak" was chunky as opposed to ground. Did not find it to be very peppery at all, I could have used a dash. Still very good but the juicy gravy interior kind of requires careful handling or a fork. The "Chicken Bacon & Mushroom" was a very good variation on a pot pie. Mild but really good. The "Lamb Potato Rosemary and Garlic". I like lamb and a pie like this would be hard to find anywhere else. I'd get this one on a cold day and be super happy. The "Ratatouille" is vegetarian. Hard for me to weigh in on this one. I'm a traditionalist and think there should be meat in the pie. Totally hits the sweet spot for my friend who had one so on her word try it if you are not a carnivore. Los Angeles needs an Australian Pie shop and this is now the go to destination. As close to home as you'll get it you are looking for them. I will be back. Maybe tomorrow. They have only just barely opened so expect some loose wheels at first (a line, running low on a particular pie) and consider the mash potato/gravy on top because it was also good. read more

I'm not sure there's much of a difference between Aussie meat pies and ones I've tried at British or Irish pubs. I don't know... is there? Anyway, theirs are pretty good. We ordered one ground beef pie, one chicken bacon mushroom pie and a side of chips (fries). We both agreed the ground beef pie was worlds better than the chicken pie. Normally, when it comes to pies, I skip the edge (rim?) of the crust as I find them too dry and crumbly for my liking, but theirs was my style- more on the buttery and flaky side- and I ate every crumb. The service was very friendly and they make a nice Americano too. Here's my issue: I would enjoy and visit this place a bit more if parking wasn't such an ordeal. There is subterranean parking a few doors down for $5 but if that structure is full or you don't want to pay for parking, you'll be parking in Skid Row. This is what we were forced to do and my girlfriend nearly had a panic attack during our walk to the restaurant. So before you venture out here, ask yourself if you're okay with this. And maybe pack a switchblade. Personally speaking, I'm not that big of a meat pie guy that I'd go through the hassle of returning. read more

Oh Australia, how you've become entrenched in most things culture these days. Whether it be coffee, food, fashion, or art, your mark is never too far off. Even all the way here in America. The last few years it's been these Aussie pie shops, which I've noticed sprawling gradually throughout some of LA's hippest neighborhoods. I'm glad that's the case though because it turned me to Bronzed Aussie. No joke, one of the flakiest, most crisp, yet softest pies I've ever sank my teeth into. And I ate that thing the way the Aussies do - as suggested by the shop owner; ground beef, topped with ketchup, and using my bare hands. My cousin and I made it in right when they doors opened, so these pies were piping hot when they arrived on our plates. You better believe the roof of my mouth was melting right off, but I wasn't deterred from chomping down on this delicious meat-stuffed pie. As for taste, ground beef is ground beef, but this meat had a distinct flavor to it. I've never had anything remotely close to that flavor, so I guess it's fair to say it had a gamey taste. Nonetheless, my cousin and I scarfed each of our pies down. That ketchup that we drizzled over our pies worked wonders, serving a dual purpose. One, as slight relief for the smoldering heat that these pies released with every bite. Two, as an offset to the super savory taste each bite contained, in essence complimenting the savory notes. Eating our pies the customary way could not have made us any happier, especially for our first time. I'm just glad Bronzed Aussie is located in downtown because I'm bound to return, and I rather drive there than further out. Mainly for the food, which is more than just plain and basic meat pies; there are Thai inspired meat pies, veggie pies, brekkie pies, the options are diverse. This also means coffee - yup, flat whites - and tea. But I'll also be back for the friendly service, which was provided by none other than a sweet Australian lady who is also the shop owner. I love small hole-in-the-wall businesses, and I'd heard such good things about Bronzed Aussie that I was so excited when I finally got the opportunity to have lunch here this past week. It's not particularly centrally located, but there's good enough signage that if you're coming off Los Angeles, you'll be able to find it no problem. I came here for lunch on Tuesday. There were a few people dining in, but there's not a lot of dining space altogether, so this might be the best place to bring a large group. There's a woman running the whole operation, and her accent sounds like she just came from Australia not too long ago. I tried the rosemary and lamb pie, the Thai curry chicken pie, and the pepper steak pie. All of them were very good. Think chicken pot pie but more inventive with fillings and a flakier crust. I can't say that I'm an Australian food expert, but I liked these pies enough. The lamb wasn't particularly gamey, but I also couldn't really taste the rosemary. The Thai curry flavor wasn't that strong either. My favorite was probably the pepper steak, but that was only because we had that when it was literally right out of the oven, and I kid you not, you could literally taste the freshness. Don't get me wrong - the rest were served warm and probably fresh too, but having it within minutes of coming out of the oven does make a difference. Service: The woman is friendly, and she even told me that they're considering opening for dinner hours (YES!) but going to experiment, so please do support her if and when they open for dinner. For what it's worth, they also sell the pies pre-made but frozen so you can bake them at home. Bottom line: They're not the cheapest pies I've had, but the fresh ones are worth it. I have to give her 5 Stars for the main reason that I am a New Zealander so all meat pies get 5 stars from me. This place is super hard to find and parking is a nightmare. It's down a walking alley in the shopping district downtown. I had been meaning to try this place for quite a while but had procrastinated because I know what a pain in the -ss it is to visit anywhere downtown but finally my meat pie cravings were overwhelming...so I made the journey. Ok so I found it finally then proceeded to take pictures to text my Kiwi friends as a form of torture....yes they were jealous!! I ordered a meat pie with regular mince, and a sausage roll , caramel slice and a Diet Coke.... The pastry is amazingly delicious .....I feel there needs to be a little more filling inside of the pies and sausage rolls, but given the price of meat today versus the price of the pie, it was a good deal... Teaming up with Michelin star trained Australian chef, Lincoln Smith, Bronzed Aussie (love the name, more on that later) offers up a well curated menu of pies and Longshot coffee. With only a few high chairs inside and a table or two outside this is grab and go eating for the most part. Let's start with how friendly everyone is in the shop. Samantha is sure to welcome you with a smile and is on hand to answer any questions you may have. Now on to the pies... The menu (you may want to call to see what is available) offers up meat pies (original meat pie with ground beef, lamb, seafood and chicken options as well as some veggie pies) topless "brekkie" pies and some other rolls/pastries and fries along with dessert pastries. You'll peer into the glass case and want to sample them all. I end up ordering the Pepper Steak and Chicken Mushroom and Bacon Pie. The seafood and ratatouille pie are saved for next time. Oh, and sweet potato fries. And the spinach and feta rolls. And custard tart. Boy, a lot to sample. Not dissimilar from an American pot-pie (but eschewing the cream base), the pie is a flaky, hot, delicious marvel. Perfect for a midday snack. The flavors are spot on, the crust is buttery and the people in there are totally not lying: this is one of the best renditions of an aussie pie you will find in or out of Australia. The Australian guy was kind, friendly and informative when I was asking him for advice on meat pies they had left and some desserts I wanted to take away. Before this place, I thought I had to drive to Costa Mesa to enjoy an Australian meat pie. Now I've got the Bronzed Aussie to kill my meat pie and ketchup cravings. After the constant urging of an Australian friend to find her roots at the Bronzed Aussie, our group decided to follow pursuit and try what Australia has to offer in terms of their culinary flavors. My first impression of the place is that it is located in the "shadier" part of DTLA and is tucked away in an alley. Inside, we were greeted by two bubbly woman who explained our choices of pies and desserts. Since I do not eat red meat or pork, I decided to make a meal out of a Lamington, Custard Tart (my favorite) and an ANZAC Biscuit and wash it down with one of the strongest iced coffees that I had in a while. I love the little yellow sponge cakes covered in chocolate and dried coconut. They're called Lamingtons. They're so good. The owner is super nice and the staff is always cool. It's a great place to meet for coffee and just chill. I thought it was a little pricy at first, but everything is fresh and is made in house. So it is a good value. This a nice little spot in an alley way downtown. You'd never guess it was there. I had the tofu curry vegan savory pie ($6.50) and a cup of tea ($3). They offer two vegan pies (the other being ratatouille), which is nice. The pie was really tasty. The crust is soft but also strong enough to not get soggy with the liquid-y filling. The filling was savory and tasty, but could have used a bit more curry powder and seasoning for my likes. I also think they should have used a firmer type of tofu and made the sauce thicker, but the dish still comes together. It would be great to see more vegan options, such as seitan filling from Upton's or Field Roast. The tea would have been better loose leaf and I wish they also had vegan sweets. Service was slow because there's only one person working there and lines started to form. All that said, Bronzed Aussie shows great potential and I look forward to going back. read more

These are the best meat pies - Pie-Not in Newport cannot compare. Tucked in an alleyway (by a Subway sandwiches), Bronzed Aussie has a few tables indoors and out to enjoy sumptuous pies. Samantha, the Australian owner, is sometimes a bit frazzled with all the orders and customers, but I think everyone can agree that her pies are irresistible. My absolute favorite is the lamb, fragranced with rosemary and deliciously savory garlic. This, my friends, is the perfect balance of savory. Not to mention, every pie has a vegan crust that is oh so wonderfully flaky and crisp. Ground beef is of course, the safe, traditional choice, but lamb has won my heart. You can also order frozen pies to stock up and bake at home. I also ordered the lamington, a sponge cake smothered in chocolate and coconut flakes. Being Yelped the highest-rated lunch spot near my office, I had to try it. Went there a few weeks ago. Had the ground beef pie, as recommended by the woman who runs/owns the place. Loved it! The meat wasn't dry and crumbly, it was moist and more like Sloppy Joe meat. The flaky crust was delicious without being too greasy. Got the salad too with avocado, it was huge. The times I've been back I got a chicken mushroom bacon pie and the Thai chicken pie. They were both good but I prefer the ground beef one. I've also tried a little apple pie. Delicious :) I can see why this place is so highly acclaimed. Parking is a bit of a bummer but you can find meters around the block on Maple. It's delicious but the pies must be a million calories, so I'll have to limit my visits to about once a month! read more

There's nothing worse than having cold food. I helped the delivery lady carry everything in, and to my surprise, it was all still hot! I loved that I offered to carry more and she wouldn't let me because she didn't want me to carry anything hot with anything cold. She clearly cared about our food and food temperatures. My coworker even asked if we reheated everything (which we did not). Props to delivery woman!!! I kid you not, every single fricken thing was unbelievably good and everyyyythinnnggggg was gone between 15 of us (I know, we eat a lot). The pie dough was so delicious and flaky and made of buttery goodness. The ground beef was my favorite... although my coworkers agree to disagree between a variety of the pies. They were perfect size (about 2 per person along with a couple desserts). I was even super impressed with the vegan options. I had a few bites of each...the ratatouille was incredible. I think I would have maybe even traded that pie for the non vegan thai chicken. But all in all, they were all incredible and we were all pleasantly stuffed at the end. Amazing! I enjoy going to Boomerangs in Austin, but THIS place has real, authentic, Aussie pie. Worlds apart! The owner was delightful - and my Aussie husband really enjoyed eating his ground beef pie. A little slice of home, I'd wager! We had originally wanted to see if we could come take some for the flight back, but alas :(, ran out of time. This place has the best meat pies! While their menu isn't large, it's still definitely worth the try. My favorite is the lamb pie and the chunky beef pie. The pie crust is super flakey and buttery - I can't get enough! They also make a really good flat white (coffee drink). I also recommend getting their desserts - my friend always gets the lamington which is is coconut-type cake; I prefer the custard pie (which is similar to an egg tart). I have yet to try their breakfast pies but I will definitely have to go next time. So thrilled this place has moved in! It's exactly the sort of business I've been hoping would come downtown...a specialty shop that will become a destination for folks. I met Samantha early on and she's so friendly and excited about her place...Ebbie and June are also lovely, and really get the DTLA vibe. Had a bunch of samples as they were getting things rolling...sausage roll, spinach feta roll, chicken pie, latte...all delicious. They pour Longshot coffee, which is yummy. I've gone in multiple times since, and it's always casual, friendly, and chill - folks hanging out at the counter, on laptops, just hanging out. It's a great food to take away, too. The rolls are made with a wonderfully flaky pastry around the meat or veggies and cheese. The pies have rich but not overpowering fillings, and the crusts are tender and tasty. They also offer a vegan option, which is very smart. One word...AMAZING! Who thought that a meat pie could be so delicious?! I frequent this hidden gem in the fashion district as part of my daily lunch options while on break from work. A colleague of mine put me onto it as he was hooked since first trying it and I have been the same. Their authentic Australian meat pies range from pepper steak, lamb and thai chicken to name a few. I find myself not shying away from the pepper steak as I was hooked from the very 1st bite! I've heard nothing but great things about the other pies so no worries. Another plus is that they also offer frozen pies for you to take home to enjoy a piece of Aussie heaven there. The service there is phenomenal! Sam and her staff always greet you with a warming smile and a welcoming "Cheers Mate" upon entering the restaurant. Jamila, who's fairly new there, does a great job with making sure that every customer is taken care of...all with a smile on her face. She even let me sample a new mash potatoes and gravy dish that will be added to their menu soon which I really enjoyed and am looking forward to having more of. That goes to show you that Sam and her team are choosing the right people to not only join their crew but to also make things a bit better there. I highly recommend this place for locals who may be looking for something out of the ordinary to eat that tastes good and especially for Aussies living here in soCal as it's about as authentic of a meat pie as you can get outside of Australia. "Chicken... pot... pie..., my three favorite things" - Pablo Francisco Maybe to Pablo, but also the best item at Bronzed Aussie (with bacon and mushroom)! Bronzed Aussie's Australian meat pies (pot pie but with flaky pasty dough) are the perfect meal of carbs, protein, veg, and sauce. Since I visited two weeks ago, I've been back twice - once to take home frozen pies and once for a round of fresh ones for dinner. There were fresh chicken-bacon-mushroom pies at 3pm so I think they come out of the oven throughout the day as needed (as opposed to only at 10am as someone said before) - and since you can't go wrong, I would ask for whatever is freshest! Here's a breakdown of the ones I have tried: PIES Chicken bacon mushroom - my personal favorite, like your favorite Stoufers on homemade flaky crack. I have never had a fresh or frozen chicken pot pie as good as this. I wish there were a couple more peas in it though! $6 Lamb rosemary - a close second. Tender chunky lamb is great with the roasemary flavor and sauce. The most expensive but a steal at $7. Occasional gristle but still a treat. Ground beef - a hearty basic. This one didn't wow me like the others but I suspect it would play on the heartstrings of an Aussie expat. A bit too hamburger meat-ish, I was hoping for more spice. Still delicious and a cheap fill-you-up at $5! SWEETS Custard Tart - I would come back just for these. Nothing unusual but it is hard to beat a freshly baked tart. The custard was eggy and creamy, almost runny and definitely delicious. $3. Caramel bar - lots of chocolate and less caramel than I thought, which was perfect. I was able to chop it up and share it and have a little for later as it's thick and rich. $3. Lamington - first time I've tried this chocolate frosted yellow cake bar with coconut shreds. It was a bit heavy after a meat pie but would be great with coffee. I saw a Kiwi buy the entire case the first time I was there. $3. ADD'L FYI: Parking - I had to circle around for street parking and it's $1 for 15 minutes, and meter maids everywhere. Frozen pie - The frozen pies are a day old, only cheaper by a few cents, but do reheat great (~1hr at 350). Service - the owner Samantha is a sweetheart. You can taste her enthusiasm and care in the cooking! Conclusion - a delicious, cheap, and quick way to bring home a hearty dinner. No one will be disappointed! read more

Maybe my Mediterranean roots have me criticizing this place harsher than the rest, but I don't think you're missing out on much. Located a walking distance away from Skid Row, the Bronzed Aussie seems a little depressed to me. The smell isn't aromatic, the place is small, but I like that most of their baked goods are kept warm. I opted for the Ground Beef per the Aussie's recommendation. The ground beef was oozey and sloppy. One slice into the pie and everything poured out. When I think gorund beef I think crumbly meat not what I got. I added ketchup as told to do so which masked any flavor. The pie crust was flaky and slightly doughy but I prefer that. I also got the feta and spinach log which wasn't worth much. The log roll was missing that crispy and golden exterior you usually get with pies. I also got the lamington for dessert which is an angel cake dipped in chocolate and dusted with coconut flakes. Really disappointed by my experience. Meat pies ok but really don't taste much better than store bought and don't have that made from scratch taste to them. But to their credit at least they are cheap...I guess you get what you pay for. The sausage roll is the only thing that I liked. Sweet pies are a disaster. Holy corn syrup batman. Again, at least they are cheap. Staff was nice but not very knowledgeable. Coffee is decent. With the baking renaissance going on in LA in the last couple years this really doesn't measure up. Been living in USA for 15 years and just found this place 2 weeks ago. Came to LA this weekend and it was my first stop at 9.30am. I picked up 10 beef pies frozen and 4 sausage rolls frozen to take home. Ate one hot when i got to my destination. OMG awesome flavour and pastry so light and flakey. This place is hard to find but please do yourself a favor and walk into the side of Sante Vilage and indulge. Its tucked away just west of 7th street in a tiny walk way,its not inside the food court but right across from it.. I had tried meat pies while abroad and they are the staple Down Under and in other former places where they talk the Queens English. Back to the review, The savory meat pies were delicious, healthy, and for $10 Bucks I had lamb thats right lamb pie and the curry pie, the meat was tender and pie just melted in to savory flavor , it felt like comfort food that was healthy at the same time. Major Respect to the Aussie Lady who opened this spot in my old neighborhood , there was nothing their forever and she just opened up the 213 to a very tasty part of the world. I grew up in Australia, and have craved australian style mince pies ever since I moved to california. This place is mince pie heaven!!! Only $5 for a basic mince pie and $3 for a caramel slice. Service and staff is always friendly, and the owner is very sweet. The chef will whip up specials like breakfast burritos on the weekends. If you're an Aussie finding yourself in LA for whatever reason, you feel at home. I haven't bought their frozen pies yet, since I live so close I'd rather just come in and pick up a freshly baked pie, but the option is available if you don't live close by. read more

This may become my new thing. I had an Amazon local deal and one day, instead of making breakfast I thought "wait...meat pies." I drove downtown. Took a minute to find a spot but when I came in the pie smell made the wait and drive worthwhile. Really great Aussie couple ran the place. Couldn't be sweeter or more patient. And the line of customers feels the same. It took a minute for them to get to everyone's orders but no one had an issue. And the reason is the savory. Seriously. So so savory. I had the sausage breakfast pie. Which was good. And the ground beef pie. Which was amazing. Seriously. Thank god this place isn't open late. I can't imagine how many of those I'd eat drunk. Americans need to unlearn quite a few things about savoury pies, known to many as "pot pies". I hate to break it to you all, but you've been making these things all wrong. The fatal flaw is in the crust - an ironsided hydrogenised vegetable oil (Crisco) based pastry with oddly stodgy fillings that may deliver on the salty-stodgy level, but fails to offer much else. The fillings most Americans use don't help matters either - being in stuck in a kind of barren Midcentury Betty Crocker meets canned Campbell's Soup sort of food mentality. Australian meat pies descend from their British variety - a pastry closer to choux/"puff" pastry than the battleaxes of American "lard"-based ones. But like with fish + chips, Australia's much better access to pristine local ingredients and given a big boost with a robust injection of vibrant European and Asian immigrants, Australia's gone well beyond their cultural ancestors in quality, range, as well as execution. It was my distinct privilege to have lived + worked on the East Coast of Australia for six years, and I've gotten to know this distinctly Australian food. My wife, who is Australian, and I have tried every meat pie we can find in Los Angeles, and while the ones served at Ye Olde King's Head in Santa Monica come the closest, the Bronzed Aussie pies are actually the ones that do credit to the original Australian pies. There's simply no contest. If you want to sample what Australian meat pies really taste like, this is the spot. For ex-pat Australians who miss the pies of their home, come here to soothe your cravings. Unlike so many pretenders to meat pies elsewhere in the city, this place delivers the goods. Sam's clearly worked hard to construct a pastry that balances the requirements of a proper meat pie being sturdy enough to contain the gravy inside, but retain the flaky crumb and delicious flavour as well. True to Australian form, well-seasoned fillings are available here: lamb, pepper steak, curry (Thai chicken), etc. The "official" condiment for meat pies in Australia is "tomato sauce", which is their term for ketchup. But sweet Thai-style chile sauce is also a favourite - Trader Joe's sells a respectable bottle of it. But frankly, with Sam's lamb or steak pies, the gravy is more than enough to carry the pie. There's no seating at Bronzed Aussie, but there is an adjoining building with a small food court where you can take your pies to eat them. Australia's food culture is far more sophisticated and multi-cultural than most Americans would imagine, if they've never been there. Their meat pies are an excellent example of their heritage, descended from Imperial Britain, yet heavily informed and "updated" by the countless immigrants who made it their home. Very flaky and amazing pies. I had the thai chicken curry one and it was so delicious and flavorful. Didn't have to wait long, fresh baked pies were ready in the oven. I also ordered their cuppucinno. Pretty rich in flavor. It is a nice cozy small place hidden in the corner. The lady helping there has an aussie accent and was very pleasant and made small chat to make sure we enjoyed our visit. I really enjoyed my visit there, will be coming back. read more

These are the best pies I've ever had! SERIOUSLY!!! I just wish I would have ordered more of a variety the first time I went. Now I've got a list ready for my next visit. Let me start off by saying that the food is amazing. The owner is a super nice! Don't be too shy about the location, in fact parking is a bit easier to find where the shop is. Personally I find it to be a great spot to hit while taking a walk around town (new urban outfitters is only two blocks away!). I digress, the pies here are absolutely delicious. If you're downtown you should totally come by, after all, it's closer than Australia! read more
