My wife and I came to the Grove on Saturday night thanks to the new extension on the D line. Instead of dealing with the horrible parking situation this mall has, the metro extension makes it super easy to come and grab food now so that's exactly what we did. Magee's Kitchen is one of the bigger food stands at The Grove and one of the places that most people seem to be eating at. Why do I say that? Well, because when I was walking around trying to decide where to eat all I saw were people eating the white plates with meats and sides on them so I just had to come and give Magee's Kitchen a shot myself. I ended up ordering the Ham with Mashed Potatoes and Macaroni and Cheese and it was basically like being served a plate from my own mother and their was some comfort in that. The ham itself tasted like ham and since I'm way too lazy to make ham at home, I was very happy with the tastiness. The mashed potatoes were very, very good and the Macaroni & Cheese with bread crumbs were fantastic as well, it basically tasted like some of the best home cooked food you could have and it was wonderful. Overall, Magee's Kitchen was a wonderful place to get dinner and somewhere I will absolutely be returning to in the future. Yesterday, the employee told me he was swapping out the rice and beans because they looked old. However, after sitting down, they still didn't seem fresh. When I went back to order more food, I noticed the rice and beans on the hot bar looked much fresher than what I had been served. When I politely called to ask about it, the employee became confrontational instead of reassuring me. Whether I was right or wrong, the interaction left me feeling uncomfortable. My friend and I are kind of obsessed with the Corned Beef sandwich here. They have many things at Magee's Kitchen but their Original World Famous corned beef sandwich is where it's at for me. Found within the Farmers Market at stall 624, this place is an institution in LA. They were first at Grand Central Market in Downtown LA opening in 1917 but have been stationed here in Fairfax since 1934. Their hot dogs are passable but I'd pass on ever having one again. The aforementioned Corned Beef Norm sandwich has 1000 Island sauce on it, Coleslaw and Swiss Cheese and it's just heaven. It's a must get! You can also get this with pastrami if that suits your fancy better, an equally good protein option. The fries are also kind of whatever. We did a tour that ended at the Original Farmers Market. I've heard about Magee's kitchen's Rueben and today I was able to finally try it. Omg!! It was the best Rueben I've ever had. The sour kraut is tender and smooth tasting. Not sour. Complementing the meat and bread The corned beef is tender and flavorful without the typical fat. You can eat this sandwich without any effort to keep it together. You take a bite and everything comes n stays intact with a wow factor. It was such a treat Service was quick and you're able to watch them slice up the corned beef and assemble your sandwich. We ordered it for "here" and it was served on a handy tray This so you can walk the dinning area searching for an open table. We fortunately found a table within a minute. I ordered the root beer and it was amazing. Now I know the difference between mass production commercial grocery store root beer vs this specialty made I would have given 5 stars but the pricing is steep at $32 plus tip for one sandwich and a drink. Happy I had the farmers market experience. It comes with two sides of your choosing so I got the cabbage and the carrot salad. The cabbage was a tad overcooked but still okay, but the carrot salad was quite delicious and I'd get it again. Carrot salad had celery, raisins, apples, and just the right amount of sweetness, and for a gal who hates raisins, I still liked the carrot salad as it complemented the corned beef even better than the cabbage. I think this place has a lot of potential, but I docked off a star because I wasn't given an option to choose sauerkraut as a side. I got the French dip, which is one sandwich (meat and bread only) with 2 pickles and Au jus. It was around $20. I have to admit even without any condiments, no cheese, nothing on the bread. THIS WAS DELICIOUS. The Au Jus for dipping is crucial to have with this sandwich or it would be dry. The meat was good quality meat, it was not tough, but tender. I finally tried the corned beef at Maggie's. Ordered the Reuben, which is one of my all time favorite deli sandwiches. Perhaps the buildup was too high for me but I wasn't blown away by it. There was nothing really wrong with the sandwich. Corned beef was tender and flavorful. I guess I was just expecting more from a 100 plus year establishment. Side note that felt kind of odd. Open since 1917 I would say that Maggie's is the most famous deli at the Farmers Market. It's right in the center so it can get quite busy, but we were lucky enough to be first in line for our Saturday lunch. You order at the counter and then grab your food at the carving station. They don't offer inside seating so it will have to be at one of the many tables strewn about the Farmers Market. Everything that we ordered was made pretty quickly but pricing is a bit more expensive than some other places close by, but you really do get a great quality sandwich in return. Parking at the Farmers Market is probably the hardest part, not so much in that they have limited spaces but after 90 minutes parking can get pretty expensive per hour. Just be mindful of time and if you plan to be out in less than 90 minutes, parking is free. Being my first visit, I wanted to try their most famous sandwich which is the Corned Beef Reuben. I recently dined at Art's Deli up in the valley and got the same sandwich and preferred this Maggie's version a lot more. The meat is very juicy and the bread was perfectly toasty and overall the portion size was fair. Itt just had some great flavors. There are a few other places in town that I like even more, but it was a great version and I would happily order it again. Swing by the Farmer's Market after an event at the Saban Theater. My son wanted to grab a bite to eat but wasn't sure what he wanted and once he saw the corned beef and cabbage dinner on the menu he knew he had to have it. The plate was around $21 but it was well worth it. There was plenty of tender sliced corned beef and potatoes and I swear a half a head of cabbage. He decided to save it until we got back home to San Diego but he said it was just as tasty as if he ate it in LA. It was a Saturday evening so the place was packed but the staff was great and we got our food really quickly. It was a bit loud but that is what makes it fun. The service was very friendly and helpful and we were delighted to also see so many Mexican dishes available. Is Horseradish important to you? It's a Big Deal to me. And, I want to tell you, this place makes the BEST horseradish I've ever purchased. It's truly outstanding. Way better than any I've ever bought in a grocery store. Equal to any I've had in a restaurant. As I was walking by the display case at Magee's I noticed these jars of horseradish. And I was struck by how much display space was afforded the product. Then I noticed there were two different kinds, the familiar looking white kind and a strange red version. I had to find out what was up with the red horseradish so I asked the guy behind the counter. He explained that the red had a little Beet Juice added to it. He told me it was popular in Jewish cuisine, that it paired well with gefilte fish. He continued on, sharing a bit of the company's history. I was surprised to learn that Magee's is over a 100 years old, and their Horseradish was their first product. Originally it was sold from a little cart on the street. Then, in 1917, when Grand Central Market was built, Magee's was one of the first tenants. After nearly 20 years at the Grand Central, Magee's moved here to the Original LA Farmer's Market in 1934 becoming the Market's first restaurant. I was so surprised to learn that this is the oldest restaurant here. I was kicking myself for having never eaten here before. I resolved to remedy that at my earliest possible opportunity. And I decided right then to buy a jar of their horseradish, the product their whole 100 plus years as a company was built on. So, tonight I tried that horseradish and WOW was I impressed. The stuff is pure freshly ground horseradish, no filler, no weird add ins. If it's not perfect, it definitely will do until perfect comes along. If you're looking for ambiance, take your plate of food and head upstairs to the second floor and plant yourself at a table next to the window. The nice breeze hitting the trees right outside will be something special. Now for the food. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. I ordered the roast beef plate with a side of cream corn and mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was decent with good grade cheese. The cream corn was a little on the watery side for me, but at least seasoned well. The roast beef was well cooked at medium, but lacked absolutely any flavor. I don't know if they just forgot to season the meat while cooking, but I had to cover it up with the sides just to eat it as it was incredibly bland. That was a big disappointment. I also tried one of their hot dogs. I ordered the All-American. While the dog was nicely cooked, the relish was a little dry. While I understand that it's fresh relish, to call it the All-American, there's an expectation that comes alone with it and this just did not meet it. I expected a wetter relish and onions and what I got was very dry. Overall, I hate to say it, but it's not worth the premium paid to eat here.
