Let me start off by saying that the food is amazing. The owner is a super nice! Don't be too shy about the location, in fact parking is a bit easier to find where the shop is. Personally I find it to be a great spot to hit while taking a walk around town (new urban outfitters is only two blocks away!). I digress, the pies here are absolutely delicious. When I first visited Australia in 2009, one of my fondest memories was riding the train around Sydney and stopping at a pie shop for a cheap meat pie right outside the train station. Fast forward four years later, and I could pretty much do the same thing here in my hometown, thanks to Bronzed Aussie. Downtown is where it's at now, and this one-of-a-kind restaurant in Los Angeles is a pleasant surprise. I can take the Metro to the 7th Street/Metro Center station and walk or bike down to Los Angeles street (the food court does have bike parking racks) and drop by here. I came here on a Saturday and though the place wasn't packed, there was a steady stream of customers, most of whom were Australians seeing what this place was about (or at least feeling homesick). I had a ground beef pie, a spinach & feta roll and a large cappuccino. The pie was excellent, the crust was the right kind of flakiness, and the meat filling, though slightly greasy, was downright flavorful. The spinach and feta rolls were excellent. The cappuccino, true to what I experienced in Australia, came with some fancy designs on the surface -- that's a big part of the cafe culture there. My only complaint was that the cappuccino wasn't as hot as I had expected (though stil entirely drinkable). They also sell frozen pies to go, at about a dollar less than the ready-to-eat versions. I bought a Thai Chicken Curry pie, a chunky beef pie, and a couple sausage rolls to take home. I also had a Lamington, which I never had in Australia - basically a cube of sponge cake covered in chocolate frosting and shredded coconut. I'd totally come by here again, I even thanked Samantha, the owner, for opening up in a central and easily accessible (especially via transit) location in Downtown. A few years ago, there was a place called Mojo Pies in Redondo Beach that sold Australian meat pies, but they closed down (incidentally, I came on their final day and was their last customer...). During my Australia trip 4 years ago, I had visited Samantha's hometown of Manly, a beach town outside of Sydney on the Pacific Coast, which reminded me a lot of the Redondo/Hermosa Beach area. She told me she was originally considering opening the restaurant in that area, where she also happens to live in. And having visited her Australian hometown, after finding out she was from there, I knew that area would remind her of home. This place is Fair Dinkum! I'm so glad I discovered this gem in the middle of downtown LA! I bought an Amazon Local voucher and was excited to be able to try this place. The ground beef pie was absolutely delicious. The crust was buttery and flakey and the filling was very hearty. I added some ketchup for tang and it just made it even better. I also tried the sausage roll, which was very good. They have frozen pies 5 for $32, which is a good value. I had to order a batch of pies to take home and can't wait to pop them in the oven later. My husband is an Aussie ex-pat so when I heard about this place on Yelp I was eager to bring him to check it out. The whole experience turned into a fun adventure and we left with full tummies and bags full of frozen pies for later. The owner is lovely and so friendly-- she really makes this place shine. The pies are also pretty important, of course! Great flavors and great crusts-- they even have vegan options! I recommend the vegan tofu curry and don't forgot to have a lamington for dessert! The iconic meat pie of the land down under made here is everything you want in a pie. Flakey, buttery, crisp. Popped my meat pie cherry with their ground beef, classic. The filling was rich and wasn't shy of meat. At $6.90 for a hand-sized pastry, I was quite satisfied. Everyone in the store that day, customers included (with the exception of myself), was Aussie. First, in the interest of full disclosure, I need to let you know that I'm not Australian. I definitely can't pass as an expert in Australian cuisine and I never even attempt the accent because it would be offensively awful for people to hear me try. That being said, Bronzed Aussie is a fantastic new addition to downtown. I went there last Saturday, the day after pi day. When I got there I saw a lot of people already seated and enjoying their pies and coffees. There wasn't a line so I waited patiently to be acknowledged by the only person who seemed to be working there. This actually took a while. I see this a lot in new restaurants- good food, great ideas but kind of bad or ramshackle service. I finally get my order in but then there seemed to be a lot of confusion about charging my order. Another worker showed up to work the iPad that they use as a register and kept asking me to repeat my order so she could charge it. The service honestly left me feeling a little deflated about the experience. Plus I somehow missed that lamb pies are more expensive than their beef pies so I felt momentarily overcharged. My feelings changed upon biting into my lamb pie. So good, so hearty, so filling. It's the perfect comfort food. I slathered the whole thing in ketchup, as suggested and it really added something. I will absolutely come by again any time I'm in the area. I'll probably bring cash next time to make the financial part a little easier. read more

The guy at the register was friendly and gave me a couple free muffins since they were about to close and he'd have to toss them anyways (they make their stuff fresh daily). There is metered parking on the street. So, if you just want to pick something up I suggest paying a buck at the meter and grabbing your pie inside. The Australian meat pie is something that you would usually buy in a gas station or 7eleven back home and is tasty, but certainly not high end cuisine. What the owners of the Bronzed Aussie have done, is take this simple concept and elevate it to a truly gourmet experience in terms of quality and variety. They also serve excellent coffee, "flat white". Above all however, is the friendly and accommodating owner and staff who make this place great and make you want to come back for more. This is a really great hidden gem in downtown. I really can't overstate how nice the owner was! Super friendly and personable, I almost felt like I was sitting down in her kitchen, and the pies were AWESOME. Amazing pies - no question. Absolutely premium ingredients and best quality meat - (which you don't get in Australia!) The special thing about these pies is the pastry - they use puff pastry all round which is crispy buttery goodness. It's not authentic however - real pies use shortcrust for the base and puff only on top. The puff pastry all round makes the pie a little difficult to eat as it doesn't hold together as well as traditional pies but the flavor trade up is worth it. Always yummy every time I go. Bronzed Aussie's pepper steak, chicken bacon mushroom, lamb, & even the tofu option are rich & delicious. They've an assortment of condiments to top your pies and my favorite is the red rooster hot sauce. A single pie makes for a hearty snack, but two will make it a meal. No fountain sodas but they do have a case of bottled and can drinks. The restaurant is quite cozy and has counter seating that faces the alley, which is a main thoroughfare for the apartments - makes for good people watching. There's no lot so you'll have to street park. The meter parking nearby is $4 an hour but you can try driving a little further away to see if there's any cheaper parking options. Hours are limited to daytime only. Give them a call before you head over? I don't think their Yelp hours are correct. read more

Simple review. Clean hospitable joint, friendly staff that hustles, amazing food. Had the Ground Beef pie with a "Lamington" for desert. I was sold on the Lamington after the staff described it as "Twinkie on crack", I didn't even know what it looked like at this point (it ended up being an unbelievably soft sponge cake with thin chocolate frosting and covered all over with coconut shavings). My first born child will now be named Lamington. The pie was equally satisfying. Really excellent ground beef/gravy filling, great puff pastry crust and it was obviously fresh as I burned the roof of my mouth repeatedly trying to inhale it as fast as possible. Not much else to it really. Put a little ketchup on a few bites which didn't hurt any. Didn't try any of the veg options (curry pie, ratatouille) or the coffee. The woman who set this shop up is trying to fill the market for nostalgic folks from down under and those here who've never tried 'em (like moi.) Got the breakfast pies (as it was breakfast), which were essentially really amazing quiches: the meat and egg and the veggie egg. WOWZ. The crust, first of all, is off-the-chain flaky buttery goodness (though I've been informed that it is actually butter-free vegan crust! Say what? Amazing.) The egg was moist and flavorful, and both the veggie and meat options vied for equal levels of tastiness. I also got a latte which was absurdly good. Didn't see that coming. Nice and frothy, strong brew. Curious about the more traditional meat pies, but judging alone from the brekkie options, I'd say you're not about to be disappointed here. read more

I would say Bronzed Aussie is more of a 3.5 stars, but they were very nice so I bumped it up to 4. It is kind of at an odd location because you have to walk through an alley to get to it so be happy if you can find street parking. The shop is very small so if you come at a busy time, you'll probably just have to take your order to-go. I came here with a craving for a flat white and what better place to go than an Australian shop? I liked that it was pretty cheap for my coffee ($3 for 8 oz), but their meat pies are a little pricier ($6-7), I ordered their most popular meat pie, which was the ground beef. I felt like there was a hint of game-y taste to it, but the flaky crust won me over. The Australian worker suggested that I eat it with ketchup and it was a good combo together. read more

Amazing little gem tucked away in a nondescript alley off of 7th x Los Angeles. It's definitely a different vibe in here than the surrounding area. Really clean and organized inside and even the alley way is a few notches above the surrounding area. The parking in this part of downtown always sucks, but the owner tells me that you can just call ahead if you're going to order take out. I first found out about this place when a British coworker of mine was extolling the virtues of meaty and savory pies, and I had to hit up Yelp to see if there were any in the area. They have a pretty good selection of savory pies, both carnivorous and vegetarian. I was picking up brunch for my veggie girlfriend and I, and ended up getting a Lamb, Garlic and Rosemary Pie, a Veggie Brekkie, a Feta/Spinach roll, Fish and Chips (special of the day), and a couple of desserts. Things got a little pricey due to my inability to stop eating. I got their before the lunch rush, but still had to wait 15-20 mins for the Fish and Chips to cook. It was all worth the wait! The chef gave me a little cup of chicken soup while I was waiting and I yapped with the owner for a bit, he is a super funny and personable guy. I loved everything I ordered, the Fish and Chips were great, neither was too greasy, though the slaw that came with it was pretty bland (I still ate it anyway). My girlfriend liked the Veggie Brekkie (I ate her leftovers), but only ate half of the Feta/Spinach roll. It was decent, but best when it's fresh from the oven. What really surprised me were the desserts! The Lamingtons was really moist and had great flavor, the chocolate didn't overpower the coconut and vice versa. The custard tart was amazing and not overly rich or artificially sweet. I didn't get to eat the Lamb pie until the next day, but everything was still moist and flaky and amazingly delicious. The garlic is pretty subtle ("a whisper of garlic...a rumor" according to the owner). I'm glad this place is doing well, and while I was there only one of the customers was an Aussie (which must say something). Fresh, quality ingrediants and friendly service, it's all you could axe for! It seems like a great place to stop by for pie and a coffee morning, a haven isolated from the surrounding hustle and bustle. read more

I'm lucky enough to work nearby this hidden gem. I've seen them improve over time and I am happy to vouch for the apparent TLC put into this establishment. The standard beef pie is my favorite if you like the sloppy joe type of consistency. If not stick with the chunky beef for more of a stew beef. If you're in the mood for a different taste, the lamb and Thai chicken really step up to the plate. The new addition to the menu, Fish 'n Chips was standard fare for what you'd expect out of a brewery or sit-down restaurant, but having that sort of quality beer battered whitefish/cod or whatever it is they use is very refreshing, and a great option for kids. Desserts are pricey, but you pay for the obvious quality and freshness of ingredients. The ANZAC Biscuit has a really nice al-dente chewy bite and amazing taste. You may be really surprised with their custard tart, which to me is a large westernized version of Chinese dimsum dandat/ egg custard, except with a hearty crust. read more

For years I've been looking for an outstanding bakery that sells savory pies. This place is literally a diamond in the rough and a rare place to come by. Upon entering the bakery, I was immediately greeted and presented with smiles which is definitely a way to get points with me. My fiancé and I tried the chicken bacon and mushroom and the lamb rosemary and garlic pies. Both were very delicious! They were very generous with the lamb chunks and the chicken had intense flavor. Then to top it off, the crust is so flakey and buttery that it creates this foodgasmic party in your mouth. I highly suggest that you make at least one trip over here. Since I am a pot pie / hand pie fan, and I have sampled most of the menu at the pie hole, and this was as good as any of those, it's a no brainer. A bit tricky to find parking, and down an alley. This is a review based off of their catering services. We have use the Bronzed Aussie for our holiday party for the last 4 years and we are always thrilled with their service. Samantha, and her team, are always quick to respond and accessible via email, text or phone call. We also order donuts en masse for this party, and I must say that Bronzed Aussie literally blows the other who-will-remain-unnamed-donut-peddler out of the water. Arranging delivery is always easy, and they are able to add additional pies quickly. I always call the shop directly to pay for the order beforehand, and the staff always finds the order quickly (unlike the Donut shop who will put you on hold for 25 minutes, lose your order, find your order, then still not have your order ready on time). Plus they have cute Australian accents. ;) They're great; I would highly recommend their mini meat pies for your party. They are perfect hand-held size and everyone always raves about them. read more

Me and my boyfriend stopped here pretty early (7:30am)...the regular meat pies were not finished yet and were still baking, but we decided to wait til they were ready. cute little space! have you go down a short alleyway to get here. there are a couple outdoor tables and a small counter top with chairs for the inside. parking- we just ended up getting street meter parking early that morning (enforced starting at 8am) ordered a coffee, the ground beef $6 and lamb pie $7 DELICIOUS! when we got the pies, they were piping hot and great! (especially for the price) the pies were enough for a meal on its own. The crust was flaky but not too buttery/greasy at the same time!. the lamb had lamb taste but it wasn't overwhelming. the one thing that i wasnt used to would be the starchiness of the gravy inside. I just imagined it to be more runny and gravy like, although it would make sense to have it thicker so the crust wouldnt get soggy the meat pie was not as flavorful but still good nonetheless! it had a bit more meat in it than the lamb pie. it was recommended to be eaten with ketchup (but i preferred not to because it just covered the taste of the beef) There is also a small fridge on the inside where you can purchase frozen pies for home! cute and tasty little spot! definitely coming back!! read more
