The nursing and social working staff were knowledgeable, patient, and supportive to help us, the family, with the transition. There was so much going on, with emotions on edge, as we were quickly transferred from home into the Center as our family member's care needs changed. Some families cannot provide the best hospice care at home. Halquist is a lovely facility as an alternative. The doctor on staff at Halquist is a quiet and competent angel, somehow managing in-house patient needs with home visits to care for clients. The nursing staff is competent and tolerant of family members that are at the Center to support the patient. Can you imagine having someone intrude on your workspace, and then, leave? I observed the staff work additional hours to get the job done, regardless of when their shift ended. Dedication to service is easy to see all around. Staff are supported by volunteers, some of which have been there for decades. Carlos, the day chef, is an institution with homemade soups and food orders that are delicious and affordable. In an imperfect world, Halquist is a little slice of heaven where the social worker, medical, and volunteer staff work as a team to provide compassionate care at the last stage life. They are intuitive to recognize the needs of the patient, and the family. My only recommendation is to smooth the transition between daily nursing staff so there is better continuity. Within one hour of a late night online request for help (for our 92 year old father) from various agencies, a personal response (rather than computer generated) came in from Jim Lindsey (President/CEO) who suggested connecting by the phone the following day; that conversation the next day was the second huge encouragement for us as we sensed genuine interest, empathy, concern and understanding of our situation. He set up an initial home visit assessment/evaluation, and this turned out to be a wonderful experience because there was no sense of feeling rushed or pressed. In addition, everything was clear and transparent. Afterwards, we had some weeks before our need for in-home care, but we could call ACC at any point before services to have additional questions answered or to update needs or changes. From speaking to various team members, it was clear that this company worked as a respectful and well-coordinated "family". Our close-knit family is very involved in the care of our 92-year-old father, who has a good number of chronic conditions and medical/health issues that need to be understood in order to care for him properly. Complete and careful body care/hygiene, good nutrition and prevention of illness or other conditions were important for us in our short-term need for services, but much more of our concern was our father's mental health and sense of feeling secure and understood by someone outside of the home. Our mother, 88, who did not herself need physical services, nonetheless, needed someone who could reassure her and who would be sensitive emotionally to both of them, in addition to doing things she could not do for my father that required special skills. From the first time we met Fatmata, the certified nursing assistant assigned by ACC, we were immediately impressed and reassured. She was a perfect fit for us, and my mother shared that it was like having one of her daughters around. We are four sisters and one brother who provide care for our parents. In other words, the caregiver needed to fill in for over a week and take care of a man who was under the observation and love of many family members. In ACC's complimentary hour of orientation/training, the daughter, who is a nurse, was impressed by Fatmata's manner as she was exceptionally intuitive, observant, and attentive with a high level of sensitivity and compassion. Although there was some initial adjustment for my father because he was missing his regular daily caregivers, after a couple of days, he was genuinely thanking Fatmata for her help. We are deeply grateful for Adult Companion Care and their dedication, personal care, and willingness to work with us to find the best support for our father so that he could remain comfortable and safe at home. The schedulers are incredibly patient, kind, and HONEST about what they can and can't do, which was such a big change. They also have some truly world class caregivers. There were some bad ones too, but in the end there were two people (Queen and Libby) who were simply incredible and were such a blessing to have caring for Mom. They have a relatively small pool of staff who can do lifting / transferring, but the ones they have are mostly good. They definitely tried to match our needs with their people, and as we provided feedback the matches got much better. They didn't have enough staff to provide full 24/7 care but worked with me as I filled the gaps with private folks. When they saw a snowstorm coming they would plan to have someone stay there for 2-3 days to prevent caregivers from not showing up due to bad road conditions. I have to subtract one star just for some of the bad caregiver experiences, and because billing turned out to be a bigger hassle with them than with other companies, but if I had to recommend a home care company in the DC area to someone else, it would without question be this one.

I have to put some background information here so that you as a reader can understand how exceptional this company is! I was in the hospital recovering from surgery for 9 days when I was discharged to a skilled nursing facility on Wednesday mid-afternoon. (Also being reviewed) Unfortunately, this facility was beyond terrible and I needed to go to the emergency room in the middle of the night for pain relief and my prescribed medications, none of which were available at the nursing facility when I needed them. (I had been without pain medication for eight full hours and was in tears and shaking like a leaf and the nurses didn't have the ability to provide relief other than being frustrated and angry with me. I called an ambulance and returned to the emergency room at the hospital where I had been treated. After the doctors had treated my pain enough that I could think things through. I realized that I didn't want to return to the nursing facility, (although I would have to go back for paperwork) but also that I couldn't go home without 24/7 help for the time being. I used my cell phone to look up "Best home health care near me," and after reading through a few sites I set my sights on "Care with Love." I called "Care with Love" around 7:30 AM on Thursday morning. I was discharged and picked up from the emergency room by 8:00- 8:30 AM and returned to the nursing home. This is where "Care with Love" really began to shine!!!! One of the administrators, Mandy, answered my call, and after hearing my situation agreed that I needed help. By 8:00/8:30 AM, I was discharged and returned to the nursing facility. I was met at the nursing facility, (which I will review in depth, separately), by Claire, from Care with Love. After a short while, Claire helped me get all of my paperwork finished and I was on my way towards returning home. By 10:30 AM, and just in time for my pain meds and morning meds, I was greeted by Alexis, a CNA/Caregiver (Certified Nursing Assistant/Caregiver) with Care with Love. Alexis packed all my belongings, helped me to do my final paperwork from the nursing facility, and had me in a wheelchair on the way to her car. A short drive home, and I was finally somewhere safe, comfortable and well taken care of!! I never expected this help to come so quickly and was in a panic attack that I might have to stay at that nursing facility!! I hired Care with Love for 7 days, 24/7, with 3 shifts of CAN's coming to take care of me. While some of the caregivers were exceptional, and some were of average ability, I can honestly say that I felt safe at all times and knew that if there was anything I needed, I would be taken care of. The administrative team was fantastic! Prior to each shift, they sent an email or text to let me know which caregiver would be covering the next shift, (i.e: by 8 PM I might receive a text message letting me know that caregiver A would be taking my 8:00 AM-4:00 PM shift, Caretaker B would take the shift from 4:00 PM-8:00 PM, and Caretaker C would be taking 8:00 PM-8:00 AM). The company can also provide a live in provider if one wishes. Each administrator was very kind, very patient, very helpful and very communicative. I am grateful to each and every one of them! Although my insurance, (private non-Medicare or Medicaid), would not approve of this service for me, I found the price reasonable considering all that I would need from the people coming in to take care of me. Caretakers take care of any number of activities while they are with you, such as light housework, (dishes after eating, sweeping or mopping a mess made by a client/patient, doing a load of laundry, if need be, and making beds. My CAN's helped coach me through home exercises from my knee replacement and through walking laps in my own home. One special mention of note: On Monday, my Caregiver was helping me prepare for a doctor's appointment when my heart went into serious arrythmia. Care with Love's Registered Nurse Laura, advised us to call an ambulance and go to the hospital. My caregiver not only followed the ambulance to the hospital but remained with me until her shift was over. The next day, she arrived promptly at the beginning of her shift despite the fact that I was still in the hospital. She did so the next day as well, remaining from start to finish of her shift, and fussing over me like a mother hen!!! I am home again, and able to take care of myself. I will greatly miss my caregivers. Care With Love helped me through the most difficult time I've ever had as an adult. I am so grateful for their help~ Would I recommend them?? YES! Emphatically! Would I use them in the future if needed? Absolutely!!! Should YOU pick up the phone and call Care with Love?? You BET!

They did not give me a reason for the reduction in hours. The physical therapist did not seem to know specific exercises I needed for my foot. But, I grant him credit for telling me I should have physical therapy at a rehab unit rather than at home.
