I just passed my road test! And I couldn't have done it without Victor from the Brookline Driving School. Seriously, this guy is a total pro. Very calm and relaxed, although don't be fooled by his laid back demeanor because he's keeping a constant watchful eye out and ready to take charge if need be. He's also hilarious, which is helpful if you're a very nervous driver because he's able to put you at ease and lighten up. Most importantly, he is THOROUGH in his lesson so by the time I took the road test I was more than prepared. For instance, everyone warned me that parallel parking was going to be tricky but the way Victor teaches it will make you think otherwise. Piece of cake! I had 5-hour class with this school. I didn't do any request for specific instructor, just went with what they scheduled for me, and this is what I ended up with (my advice in the very end) My driving background: I'm 23. I had driven in China before, but after living here for 3 years, I wanted to get my real license in the U.S. So learning in a driving school is, for me, more about learning the rules on the road and refresh my driving memory. 1. My first two hours was with a Russian guy called Borgis (or somehting like that, initial is B.B.). He was extremely bad-tempered. As a new student, there were many rules on the street that I don't fully know yet, so I get nervous sometimes, and I have many questions. As a instructor, Borgis stepped on his side of the brake (literally) every 2 minutes (because he assumed that I don't know how to drive, and he didn't even ask my previous driving experience at all to start with), but also -- about 20 minutes in and I asked many whys (I admit because of his extremely high frequency of stepping on his side of the brake, I was also annoyed) -- he almost shouted out to me: "Don't ask me questions! There's no need for you to ask questions! You don't know how to drive, I do! Just do what I tell you to do!" It was the most absurd driving instruction I've ever received -- isn't the purpose of this learning experience to learn by asking questions? Right after this shouting, for every little error (like forgot to turn the signals, hesitated with wheel turns), he would say " see how bad you are?" I mean... isn't learning how to drive a process of getting confidence? 2. the second two hours was FANTASTIC. I got lucky ended up with James' schedule, oh man -- he was patient, he knows exactly what was my weakness, and he just keep practicing them with me until I'm really fully capable of doing them by myself. I have to say, he was so accurate and sharp about my weakness. He told me "it's not that you're not a good driver, you're great and have a very high chance of passing your test -- what's not good is that you're always second guessing about yourself, and that'll make you fail the test. So true! Anyway, It was the best experience I have with this driving school. 3. Then the last hour of "tragedy". I don't want to be racist but this is a Russian instructor again. His name is "Uri" or something sounds like that. Imagine this: u got in a car, looking for learning how to drive with the instructor by your side. You signed your name, pull out, and the only thing the instructor willing to "talk" is: "go straight, yeah, keep going straight." Not even asking your driving background, how much you know about driving. Nothing. Then u kept driving straight for 15 minutes. He started asking you to go into rotary. then one rotary after another, after another. You started asking questions: why am I practicing rotary -- it's not on the test. He replied: because to me, you are very bad with rotary. Do you think passing that driving test means you are a good driver? No! You have to drive in real situations, you have to drive in rotary. Then u started telling him: but this is my last hour with your school. Can I have a full evaluation of my driving skill? He said, Ok.. Then keep having you driving rotary after rotary. And no talking. Yeah, this is what happened to me. For the entire hour, I was either driving straight, or driving in a rotary. In the end I specifically requested him to evaluate the basic things tested in a road test. I did parallel parking and 3-point turn. Here's what i found extremely funny (knowing now how terrible an instructor he was): When doing the parallel parking, u're supposed to check your rear mirror to make sure you're paralleled with the curb. I did exactly that -- then he BLOCKED MY MIRROR, saying " YOU CAN'T LOOK AT THE MIRROR! YOU HAVE TO LOOK BEHIND." WHAT?? Is there any more absurd instruction than this??? Oh, then after I showed him what I had, he didn't talk again. Then we when back to keep driving straight on the road. Advices: After reading these, you can tell why this is EXTREMELY important to CHECK WHO'S YOUR INSTRUCTOR before-hand and specifically request NOT TO learn driving with a Russian instructor. In addition to all these absurd instructions from them, their accent are also thick and really hard to understand. I'm not exaggerating. Oh wait.One last thing: their customer service lady will yell at you when you make a last-minute (but still 3 hours ahead) pick-up location change and hang up on you. And if u're asking whether you could specifically request an instructor a week before, and if you're being polite, they'll use the fastest speed to tell you a set of pre-written paragraphs on how you have to follow what they scheduled for you and hang up on you.. read more

I had a fantastic experience with Brookline driving school and passed the test first time after 10 hours of lessons. I had 5 different instructors: Juan, Victor, Igor and both Borises. Each instructor was extremely friendly, patient and professional. During the week before my test I had three lessons with Boris (the Russian) who prepared me not just excellently for the test, but also for driving in general; if anything I felt over-prepared for the test! If requesting a specific driver I recommend Boris in particular, but I honestly had a great time with them all. The only negative point is that it often took a long time to get home at the end of a lesson because I live in Cambridge. It was completely worth it though--this driving school is excellent! I just passed my road test after 13 hours of classes through Brookline Driving School, and I'd definitely recommend the school to friends in the area. The price is decent, and I didn't have any difficulties booking classes that fit my schedule. This would be a 5-star review if not for one of my instructors, Boris B - I would not recommend him if you are at all nervous being behind the wheel. He's snappy and constantly grabs at the wheel instead of giving clear instructions or guidance on how to master skills like parallel parking or backing into a parking space. Luckily, most of my lessons were with Juan, who was a wonderful instructor. He answered all my questions clearly, and didn't get impatient when I had follow up questions or when it took me a couple of tries to figure something out. He also has great tips for parallel parking, and will let you practice each skill until you are comfortable completing it. I had a road test scheduled on September 10th. When I arrived to the location where the road test takes place that day, Ilya told me that I was not on the list for that day for some reason. I was really surprised to hear that cause I've paid full price for the test when I first got to BDS office, it was about a month ago. Anyway, Ilya said I can't take the test because of the mistake that one of the employees made not including me on the list. And honestly Ilya and BDS did absolutely nothing to resolve the issue that they caused. This way I wasted a month and wasn't able to take the test at the end. Woohoo I just passed my road test and I am SO happy! This was my second time, but this time I felt much more comfortable. The first time I had Inna as my instructor and this time I had Juan. I learned much more with Juan than with Inna. Inna doesn't have much patience, and I didn't get enough training on parallel parking or three point turn. The second time I exclusively requested Juan. He is a very kind guy with a lot of patience and great attitude. He spent time teaching me the proper way to make turns, three point turns and parallel parking. Parallel parking was my struggle, so he spent a lot of time teaching me how to do it properly. The technique he uses makes more sense to me since it gives you the opportunity to fix any wrongs before coming to a final stop. Today I did my parallel parking without any problem and passed my road test. I didn't have to adjust anything, but I was ready to do it if necessary. I am the person who had been trying to get driving license from two n a half years A kind of anxiety developed related to any thing to do with driving and road test. I Failed three time and my learning permit expired and almost gave up the idea of driving ever in my life. A friend who recently got her lessons and passed the road test in flying colors recommended me this place, and I am glad I went them:) On the road they told me what need to learn to pass the road test and also give me tips that helped me in lowering my anxiety. I drove on mostly the same roads during lessons. At times it got monotonous this practice adds to your skill and confidence. You get different instructor on each lesson.My favorite was INNA. She is funny and explained things in a very comprehend able way.( she doesn't have an accent) The only problem I had was that they don't serve Arlington,MA area any more( as it is stated on the web site). So I had to go to Brookline,MA for the lesson. But it totally worth it. My road test went smoothly and I still cant believe that I have a driving license already. The experience with this school is always a bit sweet and sour..ok mostly sour..but hey, if you get your license at the end of the day, it is sweet right? Well, like everyone else, I'd to call and fix a schedule and put up with the infamous rude lady. And about the classes, on the first day, the instructor was this old man, who was also kinda rude, and hardly talked much about driving/rules but went on ranting about his lifelong struggles and experiences..GRRR and YAWN! As you can imagine...I wasn't too happy having paid them a lotta $$ and being subjected to this torture. But luckily for me, the rest of the sessions were with this guy (can't rem his name..sorrry!) who taught me exactly all the maneuvers you should actually know to drive/park safely and of course pass the test. He was patient, spoke well and was quite professional. The day of the test, spent 3-4 hours standing outside in the cold. The guy who took my test was tough and was sort of a perfectionist..but luckily I made it without a glitch and got my license! I'm just glad I don't have to go through this again! read more

Really, it depends on who you get. Brookline Driving School is well organized and easy to schedule with, and some of the instructors are very nice. However, some of the instructors I've had were really intimidating. One instructor who I had twice was Eric, and overall, I felt that he was a decent instructor. The first time I had him was my very first lesson, and he was a bit intimidating. However, the second time I had him I felt much more relaxed, and I came to realize how how knowledgeable he was. Another instructor who I really liked was Margarite. I only had her once, but she was calm, clear, and fun to have a lesson with. I also learned a lot from her. I also had a few other instructors who I liked, but I can't remember their names. One instructor who I had a terrible experience with was Yuri. (I think there is more than one instructor called Yuri) He was super quiet in the beginning of the lesson and I could barely hear him, but the moment I made a mistake he screamed at me. On top of that, we were in the middle of a rotary, which made the situation more stressful. I learned very little from him and he really took away a lot of my confidence as a driver. Another instructor who I was not to fond of was Juan. He was not as bad as Yuri, but the entire lesson he was not looking on the road and instead doodling in a notebook. He was almost completely removed from the lesson and gave me almost no useful advice. I have been told by others that he will scream. This did not happen to me, but at that point I was an experienced driver, so he didn't really have any reason to yell. I would not recommend Juan, and definitely not Yuri. This review is for those who are ready for the driving exam, I have spend most of the day watching while waiting for my son to pass his test and talking to everyone who passed before us I realize that one of the examiner and I repeat one not both his name is David I believe that he is PREJUDICE . From 9am to 12am he fails 6 out of 10 all with different ethnicity and people of color as the 4 that passes they were white . I just took and passed my driving test this morning. Prior to Brookline Driving School, I had very little experience with driving (beyond cruising in an empty parking lot). The school was very accommodating in finding me time slots for lessons in very short notice, as well as helping me squeeze in a road test 3 weeks from my first lesson. Before I signed up for the 10-hour private lesson package, I went for a 1.5 hour introductory lesson to become comfortable with driving on real roads. Afterwards, I had lessons from 1 to 2 hours long with different instructors. I've been taught by Juan, Igor, Boris, Eric, Mary, and Ilya. Although I found some instructors to be more easygoing than others, all of them are very, very serious about teaching you what you should know to be a good driver. My advice is to be patient with each of them, as they all are trying to help you out in their own way. On the morning of the test, Juan and Ilya were both there to cheer for their students. Ilya gave many last review tips to ensure everyone does their best effort on the test. I was the 6th in line, and everyone before me passed! I'm really thankful for the school! I passed my road test after practicing with Victor for just an hour. This was my 3rd attempt at the road test and I was pretty scared. I failed the first 2 tests at other driving schools who didn't take the time to show me what the road test actually entailed. Victor's parallel parking trick is awesome and I am going to hold onto that gem for the rest of my life. He also encouraged me and tried to boost my confidence because once you are anxious you are more likely to mess up during the test. I had such a pleasant experience with this driving school, which was recommended to me by a friend. Overall, the staff are very knowledgable when I called to book over the phone, and were very patient and helped me out. I purchased the 10 hour driving package, and then purchased 2 1.5 hour classes prior to me road exam. I took the classes during the weekend (including Sundays) which is great because I have work during weekdays. It was very easy to schedule over the phone and pay as well. Started my classes May 25th, and just took my road exam today, June 8th, and passed on the first time! I have had zero experience driving in my life, and have just moved to Boston, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I have learned and how I was able to pass the exam first try. I haven't had any bad interactions with any of the instructors, but like anyone else I had prefrences, especially since many had different teaching methods. All driving instructors were on time (or informed me that they would be late due to traffic which is out of their control) and made sure to make up for any missing time in the end. Instructors listened to my concerns, and made sure to help me practice and point out tips and tricks to make parallel parking or pulling up to the curb easy. They even took me on the test route when I asked and practiced the exact exam "format". Even when checking in before the exam, there was someone to remind us about rules of parking on a hill and hand signals. It is relatively affordable compared to other driving schools, and the fact that it is certified to give road exams, especially on a weekend is great and worked perfectly with my schedule. Rescheduling wasn't a hastle as long as you call before 24 hrs. I got a call before every lesson (unless I previously called and confirmed) to remind me of my lesson and confirm the time. If I could I would give this more than 5 stars. I am extremely pleased with my exerience with Brookline Driving School and will definitely be rcommending it to anyone who needs classes or a road exam (in which they provide a car, sponsor, and book the exam for you with the RMV). read more

For those of you looking for a driving school that will help you to pass the road test on your first try, I would go with this school. But like others before me have noted, there is a lot you will have to deal with to get that coveted plastic card in the end. 1) Calling to schedule appointments with the school is way too difficult for no reason. The receptionist always never answers the phone. I highly suggest you use their email address to contact them. She's pretty good about replying, once you get her attention through email. With that said, the actual scheduling process is simple and very convenient. You can schedule multiple lessons at once, which I HIGHLY suggest because the odds of you getting them on the phone again is very slim. 2) When you do schedule an appointment ask for James P. He will teach you exactly what you need to know to pass the exam. Parallel parking has never seemed so simple after doing lessons with him. It's kind of like a no-brainer me doing it now. I'm not sure about the other instructors at the school, because I have had James from the get-go. But I'm sure there are others that are good too. 3) Request to get your lessons at the road test site. The road test is rather simple and if you have a good instructor you'll get used to the turns and area really quickly so on the day of the road test you'll be more comfortable with your abilities. 4) The road test, like I mentioned before, is simple and straightforward. Turns, hill simulation, k-turn, parallel parking, signaling, backing up are the main things. It lasts probably 5 mins overall. I didn't even fully parallel park or back up 50 ft. But I think the examiner was mainly looking at technique. So make sure you've practiced all of that! I waited over 2 hours in line to take the test even though I got there 45 mins early. I was not happy about that. They definitely overbooked the time slots and the RMV examiners were being slow. In any case, I passed without any mistakes! So I'm happy about that and I'm grateful to my instructor for teaching me simple and very useful tricks. I didn't take that many lessons with the school because I already knew how to drive, just needed to practice parking. But I'm glad I did take lessons because I learned exactly what I needed to pass the test. It's expensive at $120 for the road test, but I think it's simpler and well worth the money in comparison to taking it through the RMV (where I would have had to provide a car and a sponsor on my own). Hopefully this helps someone to decide what's best for them. Just be aware of the setbacks of dealing with the school. read more

Unfortunately was not able to utilize the services of Brookline Driving School. From the suggestion of another review, I was cautious trying this school, so I booked only one driving lesson so I did not have to pay ahead of time. That was a good call! Booked the lesson a month in advance because they were booked solid which is fine. I called to confirm the appointment with them two days before the lesson and was all ready. The lady I talked to on the phone during the week was friendly by the way. A lot of reviews on here slam the woman answering the phones but the woman I talked to was pleasant each time I talked to her. Come the day of the lesson. We live in an apartment complex, so we decided to wait outside in front of our building. Waiting and waiting. Finally, after being 15 minutes late, we see the car coming from an odd direction. We make eye contact with the instructor and they drive away from us. We tried chasing them down and they drove away from us. I immediately called their office and got a hold of a rude man. He said that the instructor was waiting in front for the past 20 minutes. The guy on the phone was blaming me for not being in front of my own place. He was saying that I wasn't in front of my own apartment. I think I know where I live buddy. What must have happened was that the driver was at the wrong building which is technically a different road and road name altogether. We have seen this happen before. The road name is printed on each of the buildings doors so unless you can't read, then I guess you wouldn't know where you were. So all in all, it's a good thing we didn't have the lesson because being taught by someone who can't read probably isn't a good thing. read more

I never gave any bad reviews before. But this time I feel angry about this school. I scheduled the road test with Brookline Driving School for two times and took several courses with them. The service was awful. I have driving license in my country and just want to be familiar with the road for test. However, I learned nothing from the courses and they just want me to pay for more courses. I suggest you look through my following comments and think twice before schedule courses and test with them. 1. They don't care about students at all as long as you have paid them. The instructors are taking courses randomly and you never know who will be your instructor for next class. For this reason, the instructors are not responsible for students and they just want to go back home early. 2. The road test fee is very high and you must use their car. 3. The refund policy is very disgusting. I want to cancel the road test scheduled in three days. They refused to refund me. The RMV stated we can cancel a road test 72 hours before it is scheduled, but the school said two weeks. read more

I agree with previous reviews about the fact that the receptionist is horrible. She never picks up the phone and does not care. Other than that, I am very satisfied with overall experience. I had an appointment for an hour of driving lesson before my driving test coming up in 3 weeks. James showed up in front my apartment a little bit before the time. He let me drive to the road test area, showed me some techniques and told me about expectations that RMV examiners are looking for. He is very polite and nice. At the end of the lesson, I had to pay $160 for the lesson and the Road test fee but I did not have enough money on me. I know it was my bad. James was so nice that he did not yell at me, instead, he and his student took me home and waited for me to get cash. read more

Convenient location and timing for road test! I needed to take the road test for MA but quickly realized that the RMV books out test dates far in advance and that the location of my road test would be quite far from Boston.... Furthermore, the RMV schedules tests in the middle of the day(very difficult if you have a job) and requires test-takers to bring a licensed driver with a registered car that has an accessible emergency break... It seemed like a such a hassle/inconvenience and thus I decided to go with the driving school to schedule my road test. Brookline Driving School tells you which Saturdays are available (usually 2-3 weeks ahead, no later) and they provide the "sponsorship" (i.e. car and licensed driver to sit in the car while the test takes place). (Of course, the sponsorship through the school costs much more than just going with a friend/roommate/etc who has a car, but that requirement can be a pain and a hassle). The test takes place near Brookline high school. As for the test itself, there is an examiner (or two) who comes from the RMV to see how you do just like a regular road test at the RMV. I do not know if they go easier on students taking this test off-site or not, I think they follow similar procedures everywhere and examiners everywhere have slightly different expectations/strictness standards- but it is a little more relaxing to show up knowing what to expect and not having to get somewhere 15 miles away from the city first thing in the morning. The morning of the test, there is a line of students taking it right before/after you, but you "commiserate" together and Ilya from Brookline Driving School goes over last minute tips and reminders while you are waiting for your turn. If you take a lesson with the Brookline Driving School, you get to practice the road test maneuvers in the very same area as the test, so you'll feel fully prepared navigating with the examiner on test day. read more

I'm not really sure where all these negative reviews are from because I know many people that got their license thank to BDS. The instructors are very knowledgeable and go above and beyond to make sure you are well prepared to pass the road test. Driving a car should not be taken as a joke because it could cause you your life or someone else's life. All of the instructors that I have encountered at BDS have been reliable, and confident in what they do and in how they teach. Kudos to them for having such a tough and dangerous job. read more

I had a few sessions at this school over the course of four weeks and I was happy with a few of my instructors. ( Mary and Manny) I recommend to try different instructors(The ones with good reviews. James is overrated) to see whose style of teaching fits you the best. One tip is try to schedule your road test first, then schedule your classes over the weeks before the road test. It may help if you schedule your first session on a Sunday morning, so you'll be more comfortable driving if it's your first time instead of choosing rush hour during the week. However, you should definitely try driving in rush hours to get some experience. I passed my road test at the first try. read more

Brookline driving school is great. Booking was easy and the staff were very helpful. Request Eric as an instructor if you can -- he was incredibly professional and good at keeping anxiety at a minimum. He is great at developing a rapport with the students; he made sure to test the waters with small talk to find out what I was comfortable with. That being said, he was firm and direct with his criticism, and he gave me everything I needed to pass the test on my first try. Whatever he's making, it isn't enough for the great work he does. The test day was great -- the director of Brookline Driving showed up to help everyone get situated and give last minute encouragement. The instructor sat in the car with me, and although they aren't supposed to give any help, it was a mental comfort to have him in the back. read more

Although I had an international driving license issued in my country, I actually failed the road test at my first try (w/ another driving school). At this school, I re-trained my driving skills with three different instructors. All of them are quite good. I especially practiced how to do the 3-step parallel parking, how to do straight line reverse, and how should we frequently check the rear and side-view mirrors, which I had never learned properly before. Just one thing that you may find the person who picked up your phone call at the office is not so polite but rude. Make sure you explain yourself clearly what do you want and what do you need from this school. read more

Would not let me reschedule a driving test when the roads were flooded and I called ahead, I'm out 130$ for no reason other than policy of no cancellation. I thought a state emergency would be ok but the rude guy (had bad interactions with him previously) had decided to take my money for nothing, Some of the lessons were good so I wanted to give more stars but the rudeness and taking my money under these circumstances are one star. In response to your comment: The flood carried into the next morning, and I'm sure there were plenty of people there since you don't refund money in a state emergency. Over 50 people in 5 1/2 hours, huh? That's less than 6.5 minutes for each road test! You're lying again, just like when you were late for my lesson and blamed it on me and when one of my lessons were cut short and you blamed it on me. There was plenty of rain on the ground and it was still raining, I checked before calling to reschedule. Great school and awesome instructors. They have such a stressful job to always be alert when your sitting next to new drivers...I couldnt do it... and to have that much patience is incredible I give them lots of credit. I signed my daugther up for class but never received a zoom link. Since the class is on weekends, no one answered the office phone number， and no one responses to my email either. After 15 min, my daughter received the zoom link, which is nice. read more

I scheduled a 5-hour lesson and had an okay experience, 1. my first instructor with Yuri was nice/quiet and had clear instructions, 2. second instructor Mary was awesome she took me to storrow drive, taught me to parallel park and made me feel comfortable throughout the whole lesson, 3. my last instructor was not great at all, rather than teaching - he'd just hit the brake's without my knowledge therefore, it was difficult to drive. One time we were at a red light and I was unable to move because he had his foot on the brake. He then proceeded to look at me like I did something wrong until I mentioned that my foot is not on the brake. I had planned to take a road test after the 5 hour lesson - but the next opening was not until 1.5 months later therefore I had scheduled two individual lessons to prep. 1. A female instructor who was horrible, did not teach me a single thing - proceeded to drive me to a grocery store so that she can buy food. Called her relative during the drive and complained when she realized that the lesson was going to take a bit longer as we hit traffic going back to the school. 2. The last instructor I had was Eric was great. He went over all the drills and we had practiced continuously until he felt comfortable and confident to inform me that I'll do fine. I took my test on a Saturday and it literally took 5 minutes and I passed! There is an employee at the site to quickly go over the process and give last minute tips. Overall I would definitely recommend! Based on my experience, there are more great instructors than bad ones. You can request an instructor and I would recommend to do that - however, as they are good instructors their schedule are likely to be more packed. - Ask for: Mary, Eric & Yuri Good Luck to future drivers! read more

I took the MA Road Test with Brookline Driving School and passed on first attempt. It was quick and efficient especially because you skip the waiting period and having to take the test in a suburb if dealt with RMV directly. I recommend taking a class with them before and listening to the instructions of the organizer on the day of carefully. Both were extremely helpful. read more

The instructors are very nice and they teach you not only about the driving test but day to day driving skills. Would highly recommend it.
