Took my 2 year old nephew here and he had a blast. He literally didn't want to leave and ended up staying for 3 hours. He cried every time pulled him away from a station to try something else because he was having so much fun. This place is appropriate for kids ages 8 and under. An older kid would probably be bored. I so wanted to dislike this place before even arriving there. I'll explain, I am familiar with the area where the museum is located, but I followed their directions, and it left me about a mile short of the destination. As I'm walking there, I see both a train station and bus station within four blocks. So, please don't fall prey to their faulty directions. Take either the B43, B44, or B65, if traveling by bus. Take the 2 train to Nostrand Ave, not Eastern Parkway, as incorrectly listed. The museum itself was an excellent experience. Upon entry, you pay your fee of $11, then proceed to the check in, which is free. You can check all your items (coats, strollers, bags, etc..). Don't forget to leave them a buck or two in the tip jar. I believe they have two floors, but certain things were not available because of private parties. On the ground level was a theatre, but it seemed not to be working. Replica bakeries (Asian & Mexican) from my very own neighborhood (Sunset Park). An International food market, where kids can pretend to shop for groceries, use the conveyor belt, and make transactions. They have a travel agency, a music room where they can see both Latin and West Indian sights and sounds along with an area to draw. Spumoni Gardens (not available when I was there). On the opposite side was an arts and crafts section. They have staff who assist the children with drawing and they were very helpful and seemingly eager to help all the kids create a master piece. On the level above was a bus, which all the kids seemed to go wild for and get to live out their dreams of being Ralph Kramden, and driving the bus through out Brooklyn. Lastly, the top floor, has an area with seating; you can also purchase food there, but it's pricey. The majority of this area with artwork seemed to be closed off as well for an event. Overall, this museum is awesome, has a multitude of things to keep your child up to about age 8 or so entertained. They have a souvenier shop. My complaints along with the bad directives are they shouldn't close exhibits for prívate parties on a Saturday. Also, maybe get a second bus, or have an employee monitor the bus because some parents disappear and it creates a wild scene of hysterical kids wondering when it's their turn. read more

The pretend stores were empty....not enough play food to make pizzas at the pizzeria....out of stock groceries in the little super market, not a single piece of dough to bake at the bakery! :-/ Down by the end was a play room right next to the fossils where there was a huge snake and one bird, both live. Inside the playroom (no shoes permitted) were some drums, a small rocker, and a hammock type swing. Nothing special really and on top of that it smells like sweat and feet, at least get a window or vent or some sort in there....so many kids running around in that small little room you really need to keep the air circulating. My last hope was the play area for toddlers, for kids up to age 5. My 3 and 1 year old kept being run over by the older kids or kids that were actually "5". It could've been cause I came on a really busy day with tons of kids visiting on a school trip, everything must of been misplaced. Didn't really have such a good experience here, was hoping to get a little something at the gift shop before we leave...wanna take a wild guess? Yes, almost everything was out of stock! I got to go here for free so it's not going to be super critical. However, I thought that I could do/see everything in about an hour. I did see a bunch of kids going crazy in the little street mock-up but for the most part everything just kind of went by quickly and I wasn't that crazed about it. Maybe because I'm a jaded adult now but there wasn't too much to do-although as a caveat it was undergoing renovations so a lot of their exhibits were not around-in particular their Burmese python, Fantasia was gone. I was sad about that, but so were a surprising amount of kids. Other than that, I really don't have anything necessarily bad to say about BCM. I got in for free. I saw some pretty interesting stuff. Absolutely love this place! So much to see and do, and very interactive for kids of all ages! They have such cool exhibits that mirrors life for families living in the area, and has interactive exhibits on nature and city life in general. They also have a toddler zone for the smaller kids to run around in (although it closes an hour or so before the museum closes). If you are a partner member of one of the other museums in their network or active or retired military - you may have free admission (check with front desk). Great place to have kids run off steam, especially when its too cold to go outside and play. It's also down the street from the Brooklyn museum, so it makes it a bit easy to spend some time at both places. read more

Walked around for a few and caught the 3pm Slow show. It was a fun and interactive presentation. We got to learn about a few animals and we even got to pet a snake! The presentation was great and my son loved it. Our next stop was Totally tots. Great for the younger children. My son is 1 and it was prefect. There was a Water area ( they provide a waterproof apron). Definitely bring a change of clothes bc my LO got wet. They have a sand area, blocks, dress up, small slide...My LO ran around exploring everything. What's really cool is the World Brooklyn. It's little replicas of stores that are popular in the Brooklyn neighborhood. You can pretend to make a pizza at the famous, L&B Spumoni Gardens. They have props to create Pizza. Fun for kids and for all. Cafe- I had a grilled cheese and a soda. Price was average, enough of a selection to choose from to satisfy your tummy. Had a great time and will be back soon. read more

Today on the second floor they had a Science + you exhibit and I noticed that there's no museum staff to control the way that the patrons use up the space. So when we went to the exhibit it was messy and out of control. In the first floor where they have the tots area the person attending was on the phone and not paying attention to the people coming in and out. Other than that we had a great time. Excellent learning experience for kids and even adults. I came here on a rainy Saturday and enjoyed all of the exhibits and hearing the laughter of young kids. I found the entrance fee to be a bit pricey for a children's museum but it did not deter me. The staff members are exceptionally nice and knowledgeable. The gift shop is amazing. read more

I really wanted to love this storied museum, but wound up feeling disappointed. It's also not exactly cheap -- a small group could easily spend over $100. The interactive play areas were enjoyed by the kids I was with. The exhibits could be updated or at least cleaned up a bit (e.g. sad looking taxidermy, worn out plastic fish, cloudy resin). My biggest gripe, however, is the safety and wellbeing of the live animals. The enclosures seemed clean and the animals all had food and/or water but the animals seemed depressed. I have a suspicion this is because children are *constantly* banging on their enclosures. The museum either needs more security or they need barriers separating guests from the enclosures. I tried to be understanding -- they're just kids -- but the museum must do better or they should be forced to find safe homes for these animals. read more

Brooklyn children's museum is disappointing and quite frankly an embarrassment. We took our son during the heatwave in July thinking it would be a great place for him to play in an air conditioned area. It was stifling in there. There were fans in some corners of the museum that barely offered relief. The majority of the exhibits are the same exhibits from when I was a child. They look like they have the same dust from when I was a child too. The exhibits are covered in layers of dust and dirt. It's disgusting. Many of the hands-on exhibits are broken or don't work. The poor employees looked like they would pass out from heat exhaustion let alone the parents and children. I went to Boston children's museum a week later and it was beautiful. It puts BCM to shame. I thought I'd give BCM another chance. It's now August and absolutely nothing had changed. read more

So I get a call...It seems that my niece volunteered me to Chaperone a school trip to the Brooklyn Children's museum. So on a friday, I had a date with a special girl and approximately 30 of her closest friends. Of course, we had only the best transportation, the yellow bus! As I sat and listened to children scream as they were being thrown into the air as the bus hit bumps, I watched their teacher masterfully begin a splendid song as if she was a world renown conductor. The children, instantly forgot about their journeys through the air and began to accompany her in what could only be described as the sound one hopes to hear when one hears the essential elements of harmony, calm, and youthful joy. When we arrived, the parents went to the counter to pay. They took Amex. I was paired with another male parent and three children. We were assigned a wonderful tour guy who took us around a museum that was a microcosm of the businesses and staples that make brooklyn great. The children were allowed to walkin into stores and subway cars that were built into the place to resemble actual businesses. It was amazing. There was also a rule. You HAVE to touch. Everything! It was a great time. There was even a sandbox. There were fish. There were bread stores and pizza shops. It was great. The guide discussed lessons and engaged the audience. Afterward we ate. There was a cafeteria. There was also a gift shop. I was rather impressed with the place in general! On the bus we went. The singing continued and eventually we arrived at school. I asked my niece if she wanted to leave with me. She said..Uncle Jamel, duh, I have to go learn. Then she blew passed me and walked into the classroom. I have such mixed feelings about the Brooklyn Children's Museum. First, I think it is really important that such an institution exists: a big space for children to explore, play, learn and grow. They have the idea: the lower floor is on the surface a fun space where kids can pretend to work at a travel agency, in a bakery, in a pizza shop, at a grocery store. etc. There is a tots area with what seems like a great water feature, a space for reading books, an art room a big block area, sand zone and a little slide an instrument zone. The upstairs is a regularly changing exhibit, and about 25% of the time, it is awesome: they once had a series of architecture related zones and at another point, they had a great variety of building toys (including the motherload of all magnatiles). Few people even know there is an upstairs area, which also includes a great library and a nice cafe area. What brings my overall feeling about it entirely down is how LITTLE they seem to do to keep this place up or refreshed. Stuff is broken for YEARS at a time. They often have crappy exhibits replace what was otherwise a seriously awesome space upstairs (like the time immediately after they had a bedbug scare, they changed the exhibit upstairs to focusing on shoes. yes, shoes). There aren't a great deal of tactile items that kids can actually use and play with in a lot of the spaces, and the computers that are around in some of the areas are basically from the 1980s. The worst thing about the museum is getting there. It is a schlep from either the 2/3 or the A/C if you have small kids (and only people with small kids should come here: my 5 year old is basically done with going to this museum), and the buses are SO infrequent that it's laughable. Forget calling a cab if it's raining: I suppose that isn't an issue any more with Uber, but I've definitely had more than one annoyed trek back to the subway. There also aren't a great number of food options nearby (though David's Brisket House alone is worth the visit here), so it's good to pack something if you plan to go. Overall, I'm glad it exists. If I were visiting from afar I'd probably give it 2 stars compares to the many way better Children's museum experiences that are around the world. If, however, you live locally and are looking for a place to take your kids for an hour or two every few months, you could do worse. Just avoid it when the shoe exhibit comes around again. read more

I like this museum, I really do!!! It's a cultural institution for kids I mean I have kids how could I not like it.....but (and the but is lengthy). It's essentially been the same museum for eons!!! My daughter has been making me pizza at the Spumoni Garden for six years, she's been a travel agent, worked in the market and made me the same pan de muerto for six years. I would love it if they refreshed the first floor just a little. I mean really a travel agency?? So irrelevant, it's such a great opportunity to update at least that space. There are changing exhibits upstairs but now with a three year old it's hard to convince him to get off the first floor. So I'm afraid he will follow in his sisters footsteps and work in the same travel agency, the same market, serve me the same pan de muerto and I will be eating Spumoni Gardens pizza for the next three years. He's already a bit too wild for the toddler area and my six year old has officially been banned due to age. I mean BCM has a great foundation but a nice update would be welcomed. Even though it's also in almost the most inconvenient location, we still take the journey in hopes of something new. And if I'm being completely honest the free hours this summer are from 2-6 every Thursday so that's a huge bonus. Free stuff check is also great, I don't have to lug around a scooter, a skateboard, the snack bag, my purse to every section. Lastly, BCM can you stock some magnets in your gift shop. Seriously I've tried to buy one the last two times and you "sold out" and in that short time of looking for the magnet and asking the cashier and being told it was sold my kids had each grabbed five things they wanted. A place where kids can run free and wild and enjoy everything from internal pits filled with blue sand and toys to water games, a tot's section (for kids under 5) and plenty of hands-on activities? Yes, this is a winner. Get the family membership if you come here more often than a few times a month, it'll be worth it but even so - $9/ person isn't bad. The cafeteria on the upper floor is simple and warms up food (no real prep here), but isn't crazy expensive or full, so that's nice. Wouldn't you know it - the first thing my daughter goes for after I come in is the gift shop where there are a ton of overpriced but fun toys (lots of Thomas the Engine story trains, etc.). No parking owned by the Museum, but street parking wasn't hard to find on a wintery Sunday morning. 10a open. They have waves of kids running around here, particularly as birthdays moved through. The bus inside allows kids to play, then take a trip around Brooklyn from the Chinatown to the travel agency to Spumoni. Plenty of fun in the greenhouse, lots of toys to assemble and let them draw and use light tables to trace. Lots of creatures hidden in and about the area - the tarantula to the fish. And plenty of kids running around. Lots of space and it's also made mostly of recycled materials - a good balance. There's a few places here that tired adults would crash, but interesting nonetheless for the toddlers and younger kids (I'd say about up to 9-10 before they'd start to lose interest and should be in a bigger place like the Liberty Science Center). read more

It does not get much better than the Brooklyn children's museum. I was coming here when I was a kid and now I am bringing my own kid here as well keeping the tradition alive. There's always something occurring here. It's the perfect place for me to take my toddler and just let him run wild. There so much for him to get into. There are so many things to see and do and it always seems like there's a new exhibition every time I come. If you want to run around and play, if you want to sit back in the cut and read, if you want to see a performance you can do all these things and more at this museum. What I find most rewarding is all the new things you can discover while just doing what you were already doing .The baby hub has so many places to go it's basically shangri la for the three and younger crowd. You have sand, blocks, giant legos, water play, and different small art classes. They have it all. They sometimes have animals that they let the children hold. Last time I went my son was playing with a starfish. I also enjoyed the green house where children can touch and explore various species of plants. Or color or read books about plants. Basically there is always at least four to five things to do in every section of the museum, so your never bored. I have been there several times and I still haven't done everything. The one thing that I don't love about the museum is the crowds. There are certain places where it just gets too crowded and its a little hard to find a space to just watch your kid do their thing. You have to squeeze by a bunch of parents playing on their cell phones while their kids engage themselves. Also this can become a problem when getting your stuff in and out of coat check So thats a small drawback but all in all the museum is a winner for tykes and families. What a magical, awesome, wondrous place!!! We went for Halloween weekend and it was fantastic, better than I could have ever imagined. This is a great place for toddlers, preschoolers, older children and adults! Great and interactive exhibits geared at encouraging imaginative play. They had a huge Burmese python and for Halloween, it was eating dead rabbits WHOLE in front of everyone. I thought it was awful to watch but the older kids loved it. Seems way too intense for a younger child. The place is spacious, clean and modern, nothing like the embarrassing Children's Museum of Manhattan, which is a disgrace. (maybe I'm being harsh, but seriously you cannot compare the two) They have a library, multiple exhibits, water play, sand play, musical instruments, cultural exhibits, dress up clothes, room for arts and crafts, a cafe and a rooftop deck which I can only imagine is awesome in the summer. You can spend the entire day here and not get bored, there is so much to see, do and learn. We had a blast and we will be back again and again. My only suggestion is that they should have wipes everywhere since the kids are touching and exploring everything... other than that carry your own wipes and have your kids wash their hands before leaving the museum. read more

I visited the museum for free using the City Culture Pass that you can access with your library card. The museum is about a 15-20 minute walk from the subway station. This can depend on how slow or fast your child walks. It took me a long time since my two year old toddler is slooowwww. Anyway, on this weekday, the museum was generally quiet. No crowds. It's not a huge museum so you don't feel overwhelmed. They just have the right amount of exhibits for children to play. The exhibits are interactive. There's a toddler area for your toddler to have some time to run around, slide down the slide, and even a corner for water play! -- I avoided this area since my son has a habit of getting his whole body wet. There is a small cafe upstairs and an indoor area to eat and a big outdoor area to eat on a nice, sunny warm day. The cafe is just ok -- it's mostly snacks and smaller bites. You're better off bringing your own food if you want more than a snack. read more

So let me tell you a story: It was a few days before Christmas of 2016 and we decided that our 2.5 yr old and four of her friends (and their parents) could come over to our apartment for some ye olde Xmas tidings. All was going well until the sugar kicked in. I still remember the moment I opened my daughter's bedroom door and saw her and a friend climbed up onto the dresser smearing frosting all over our walls, while the others span in circles holding jars of sprinkles that were flying everywhere. (Pro tip: do not leave 2.5yr olds alone to decorate cookies, EVER). A fuse blew in my brain and I quietly shut the door and went back to the adults outside. Eh. Not bad. For $10, I can't complain much. Plus my niece was plenty entertained. But the Brooklyn Children's Museum is definitely not as mythical as I remember it being as a kid...But then again, what is, right? Anywho, they have some pretty cool and interactive exhibits. They have one that is supposed to be a replica of Brooklyn, which is pretty cool. However, it doesn't seem like there is a staff member in charge of placing the exhibits back in order once the kids rearrange every freakin' thing. For example, the "supermarket" exhibit is never stocked and the "groceries" are slung about the floor at all times. Not cool. The tutorial that they had about the starfish and crabs was pretty cool. The instructor was very nice about passing things around and letting all of the kids take a look. Mik (my niece) also enjoyed the water play room...That was pretty fun. Childtren's museum's are great -- it keeps the kids happy, you can let them run off and play, explore and touch all they want and they have fun exhibits. This place is no exception. For being in the heart of Brooklyn, this is a great place to take the kids on a rainy day during the summer as we did a few times this past summer. Yes, as others have noted, the parking is a bit hit or miss, but it's certainly not impossible, and we didn't have to feed meters or pay for a spot in a parking lot. The price for entry is reasonable (I forget exactly what it cost). It is clean and spacious there are multi-cultural exhibits which reflect much of Brooklyn's neighborhoods, for the kids to explore and play in. I was a bit disappointed (but also sort of understood), that my son (age 8), could not join his sister (age 4), in younger children area -- the museum staff is apparently not permitted to allow children above age 5 or 6 into this special area. Also, on one of our visits, the "theatre" exhibit (where the kids can dance and put on a show along with other cultural dancers who are on screen), was not operational when we were there, but was working on another visit. I also see that some of the exhibits / areas are beginning to show their wear and may soon be in need of refurbishing / updating . . . but for a kids museum, I can also understand some of the wear and tear that might occur from so many little hands and feet. Also, the last time we were there, upstairs in the library, they had a snake exhibit where the kids got to pet the snake and ask the handler some questions. My nephew went to the Brooklyn Children's Museum as he does twice per month. There is a new exhibit called Markeryard that the website describes "invites children to test their motor skills and imaginations as they construct, build, and invent structures and other creations using everyday materials such as cardboard, tape, fabric, string..." My nephew is 3 years of age and spent 45 minutes using glue, tape and paper making a robot that he named "Sarah". He was so proud and couldn't wait to show his mom when he got home! We took pictures, video, the works. Upon leaving, a very "rough" female security guard said Cooper was not permitted to take home his robot of paper, cardboard, and string. They said its the museums policy and that the kids robot needed to stay behind. When it was questioned, the response was that the art would be dismantled and the materials reused. Little Cooper when told he couldn't take "Sarah" home started to cry. Talking to the security guard, she refused to listen. "What if we just took it anyway?" was the question... She replied, we will confiscate it from you. "You would take a cardboard and paper art work from a 3 year old toddler?" "Yes" was the answer. This is a big miss with the Brooklyn Children's Museum. There is nothing posted online or in the room that children would not be allowed to take home their art. There is no other option to make a donation for the materials or to purchase it for an additional fee. The ridiculousness that they are going to rip off paper, cardboard and string and reuse it is laughable. Needless to say we will never be back again. There are dozens of other options where museums are not in the business of making 3 year olds cry. read more

Love coming here with the toddler. We have a yearly membership which is so worth it. They have so many things at the museum and always have special events. There's usually a story time, meet the animals and celebrations of many different cultural holidays. Some stuff is a bit older but everything is very interactive and kids have a great time. It's never too crowded. Get here early if you want it to be nice and quiet. Plus stuff is still nice and organized early on. They have a great toddler area with water tables, sand area, music/drum area and toys. When the weather's nice there's an outdoor area right outside the cafeteria. You can eat outside too. Firstly. Let me state this institution has been long standing in the community as I am. I have older children who are now adults that have found memories of this place. So having a birthday party at the location for my youngest child has not only a non-brainer but also nostalgic. However, I was disappointed with my experience with one of the managers on Dec 3rd. We were slightly late on rapping up due to some miscommunication. We were in the process of clearing when the event manager approached us to inform us that our time is running to close. I mentioned, I mentioned incorrectly the time we were working with to close and the manager proceeded to advise me or my inaccuracy while adding some superfluous information that included a note of charging us extra. Her default was passive aggressive and all done within an earshot of our guests, some who questioned her approach. While I totally understand the need to comply with the contract time frame, it must be noted that when she approaches we were I already in the process of breakdown and we won't but minutes past the required wrap up. I understand "the policy" however, I also understand "the spirit of the policy". I believe that then event manager could have used her discretion to assess the situation differently, i.e. we were guest that willing to work with the policy. We left, everything in tack, however, that brief unpleasantry was concerning. I would suggest form of customer service tor leadership training for that staff member. The staff is a representation of the institution and this institution always operated with the community in mind understanding that its success is predicated upon proper customer service. My hope is that all staff has this as the forefront of their daily routine. Note- all the other staff, security, grounds people were great. That one event manager needs to rethink her approach or be re-trained. read more

This museum is definitely better than the Manhattan children's museum, but I wasn't as impressed as most of the other reviewers. This may have to do with having been to the one in Boston which really sets the bar high, especially if you have a child under 3. There is a space devoted to toddlers, but they allow kids up to 5 to play. They overwhelm the younger children. My 1.5 year old was mowed down a couple of times. They also want you to sign in. I didn't see the point. Brooklyn World is a pretty cool exhibit. The 'stores' were fairly rammed with kids and again the older kids were aggressive at times. One boy said "I want that" and pulled a drum mallet from my son's hand and the father watching said/did nothing. Overall, it was just okay, but mainly because of the age and stage my kid is at and probably a fun time for 3-4 and up. read more

This is The first place my daughter thinks of when I ask her what she wants to do. She lives the goodlier area and I love the indoor fun during the cold weather. Only down side is some parents tend to let their kids run wild with no boundaries. read more
