Stupidly overpriced. Didn't plan on ever coming back here after Western Beef closed, but I was in the neighborhood. The only thing that was decently priced was the Dole pineapple juice ($2.50). There was Bumblebee solid white tuna that wasn't bad ($1.79). Where the pricing gets absolutely offensive is the $21.99 for a 6 oz. bottle of Truff Black Truffle hot sauce. I know, I know, it's fancy but I've been looking for it everywhere and was so surprised to see it I grabbed it without checking the price. Why didn't I check the price? Because you can get it on Amazon for $14.49 so how much more expensive could it be??? Well, it's a 41% more expensive! Now I have to go back to return it. This store is more geared to expensive specialty items. It's a broad selection, but not very deep, so there's a lot of stuff that a normal supermarket would stock that Brooklyn Fare just doesn't. It's a Whole Foods wannabe. But if you go to John Jay College the Deli is a winner. It's a place where you can pick up a Bacon Egg & Cheese with a free small coffee before class. There's also a good selection of prepared sandwiches and salads that are much better than the school cafeteria. They also have Boar's Head so I have to rate the deli as the only good thing about the place. There's also a sad looking hot food section that I would steer clear of just on general principle. I just don't trust them. I really feel bad for the people in the neighborhood who don't live in the new luxury high-rises. There's no longer a reasonably priced supermarket within walking distance. read more

Make Brooklyn Fare obey the law! Brooklyn Fare has a BIG problem with obeying the law regarding bait-and-switch. THat is to say, they advertise sale prices on items and it seems like about half the time the items are not in stock. Has this happened to you? It's illegal. They are required to stock sufficient merchandise for demand and or to make good, but they refuse to make good with reasonable substitutions or rain checks. COMPLAIN to the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) is the agency responsible for enforcing the city's Consumer Protection Law--including unfair trade practices like bait-and-switch tactics at grocery stores. Although, a fairly new and welcomed addition to the neighborhood, while reminiscing thoughts of its predecessor Western Beef, there are still a couple of issues that raise an eyebrow here. First what's good... what I find very nice is the store's spaciousness, cleanliness, and they carry a variety of foods and brands. Often I find popular, local, and off brands to select from. However, several of my go-to labels are missing or low in abundance. Also, Brooklyn Fare's pricing is moderately-high. They aren't as pricey as Morton Williams or D'Agostino's. Surprisingly, many items are more costly than Whole Foods. Since Amazon's takeover I no longer refer to Whole Foods as Whole "Paycheck." That said, when there's a sale on an item at Brooklyn Fare, it really is at an unbeatable price. But no 'Prime' extra 10% off here! Love their produce and meats but don't find they have as large of a selection of organic, non-gmo, grass-fed, or wild caught items and what they do have is still a bit more pricey. Caution: I felt watched probably due to the abundance of cameras all over the store, but also because I take my time to read labels and am a spontaneous shopper meaning in the moment I go from aisle to aisle browsing. Also, the store's layout is not easy to understand. What makes me uncomfortable and does seem unusual, obviously bias, and discriminatory is that every time I've shopped at Brooklyn Fare when I'm leaving, there's always several male workers or security present at check out that weren't there when I began my shopping trip. Being a Black male, regardless if I'm dressed down or wearing a blazer and Versace, I tend to notice what seems to be watchful eyes on me. Many retailers are not subtle about their profiling of certain customers and possibly think this boldness will scare off unwanted shoplifters. That might be true, but what I know for sure is it also makes paying customers choose different retailers to patronize. When all is said and done, Brooklyn Fare is not my preference for food shopping but I'm still glad it exist as an option. read more

Used to like Brooklyn Fare, but can't say I do anymore-- boggles the mind that there is also a 3 star Michelin restaurant here as well: Moldy produce, Moldy cheesecakes, moldy cheeses (not blue cheese) Mixed bag, but staff is often rude (including about the moldy produce) They used to have a rewards program, they took that away and said they were replacing it, but then never answered on multiple attempts to contact them and enroll. Brooklyn Fare has a mix of high end and affordable goods. Their fruit and produce, cheese, deli, meats, frozen,... every section is well stocked with lots of options. The buffet table looks appetizing. The sushi must be delicious and fresh as I've seen it empty towards the evening. One of the best kept secrets is probably the deli sandwiches... very delicious and fresh with a lot of variety. read more

Sorry to report that Brooklyn Fare on West End Avenue in Manhattan continues to deteriorate. The prices are rising much more than other shops, and much more than when they opened. For example, one pound of regular Yukon gold potatoes is $2.49. At Whole Foods in Columbus Circle, Yukon gold potatoes are $1.79 per pound for regular; $1.99 for organic. It's expensive and small but overall good. Their wraps at the counter are usually great but I went in once and asked for a chicken Caesar wrap, which I thought was pretty normal and self explanatory, but when I got home I realized I was given a wrap with literally just hot grilled chicken and Caesar dressing lol. Their weekly flier offers low prices for some items "with Club Card." But there is no way to obtain such card. I asked the first time I was there and was told to sign up online. There is no way to do so online. I asked the next time and was given a slip of paper to fill out with my contact info. I completed it and gave it back to the checker and nothing came of it. I emailed the store to ask about getting a Club Card and never heard back. Duplicitous at best. The store is attractive, hard to navigate, and not inexpensive. I saw some cake items for sale that were past their expiration date. Until I can obtain their (imaginary) Club Card I'll shop at Morton Williams where the prices are straight-forward. read more

I like how this place has a mix of organic and non-organic, name brand and fancy name brand offerings. Some things are reasonably priced, especially when they are on sale. I think there's a frequent shopper card available, at least I was prompted to scan one at self-checkout. I like that they have self-checkout available. I will say there is one thing that gives me pause. As I walked through the store, I noticed it's very hard to navigate. It felt like a maze. I felt like I'd get lost in the store. It seemed like they wanted a single line flow of traffic. There's no straight path in or out. I realized that the store may be designed like this on purpose so it discourages theft. I'm not sure if that's racist design. This place is replacing the Western Beef, which would attract the more unsavory characters in the neighborhood. The store design is definitely ableist. The aisles are also very narrow so you might have trouble if you have a wheelchair or baby carriage. I also wonder what happens if there's an emergency and there's a panic to get out. read more

FINALLY. A grocery store to compete with the monopoly of Morton Williams. Let me start by saying this store is great. The prices are ethier the same or lower than Morton Williams and the selection twice better. The over best part about going here though is how immaculately clean the store is (they actually clean the floor all the time and it smells great) The workers are also very friendly as well. I go here every time that I can! Oh yeah, they also actually put the prices on everything! I welcome this addition to the neighborhood, which is located in West End Towers, where the Western Beef used to be located. "The Beef," as it was "affectionately" known, was disorganized and not very clean. Brooklyn Fare is a large gourmet market and they have a wonderful selection of fresh produce. Personally, I love it. But I am fortunate to be able to afford the prices. Many families in the neighborhood no longer have an affordable supermarket, so I don't want to downplay the fact a lot of people really loved and miss "The Beef" and other affordable meat. read more

Today, the new grocery store in my neighborhood opened. I had a wonderful experience shopping there. This is the 4th Brooklyn Fare grocery store. The original store is in Brooklyn alongside the stores in manhattan Hudson yards and west village. As someone who loves cooking and grocery shopping, this was a real treat for me. As soon as you walk in you notice the immaculate layout of the produce section. Rows of beautifully stacked fruits and vegetables warmly greet you. The store has a sushi bar, deli, hot foods buffet by the pound, rotisserie chicken shelves, large ice cream section, organic foods section, sizable coffee and tea selection and more. The store feels spacious and comfortable as the layout was well thought out. Brooklyn Fare did a really good job stocking so many items in their available space. I was even able to find a section selling pots and pans, duct tape, bathroom plungers and other convenience store necessities such as toiletries, lotions, soap, etc. They deliver to a 10 block radius of the store. One can order from their website. The produce was very fresh and high quality. The store reminded me of a smaller but nicer Whole Foods without the large crowds. The prices are very reasonable and in line with the neighborhood prices. There is a Morton Williams supermarket two blocks away on the same street. I imagine that many of their customers, including myself, will be coming to Brooklyn fare more often as it was a superior shopping experience. The service, food quality and selection seems better than Morton Williams. The staff was especially helpful and treated the customer with kindness and respect. I bought food from the sushi bar and hot buffet. The paella and beef stew from the buffet were delicious and totally worth it at $9.99/lb. The sushi I had was fresh and reasonably priced at $11.99. I ended up speaking to the owner who was overseeing the opening. He mentioned that if there are specific items that customers want his store to carry we can reach out to him and he could help us. I thought his openness to listen to his customers was really exceptional and welcoming. I have no doubt that this store will get very busy in the near future. Brooklyn fare has a long reputation for high quality products and service at affordable prices. I was really impressed with the positive and helpful attitude of the store,employees.
