The stretch of Amsterdam Ave between 81st and 84th St is known as one of the deli capitals (this bodega plus Amsterdam cafe on 83rd) of New York. Except these ones aren't packed with gd tourists looking for a sandwich to take a picture of for Instagram. This is real food for real hard working New Yorkers FUHGEDABOUTIT. This bodega has an excellent soft drink selection along with an enormous selection of beer. Furthermore, they carry many different types of groceries and snacks. You will almost certainly find what you're looking for in this cozy and friendly store. The staff are always glad to see you, they greet you with a smile (now hidden by their masks because they adhere strictly to covid protocols), and are extremely efficient. Let's move on to the deli in here too. Definitely the best value, and quite possibly the best flavor for a BEC on the UWS. This includes all of the fancy places that will charge you twice as much for half as much bacon and with the egg/cheese ratio out of wack. Not here. A little known fact is that the Marvel villain Thanos was actually talking about the BEC from here when he said, "Perfectly balanced, as all things should be" This place is a neighborhood staple, and is absolutely worth stopping by if you're in the area. read more

This is a fabulous grocery store in the UWS. Sure, it is small, and sure, it doesn't carry everything. But it has enough of what you may need throughout the day or evening. From the deli, to the beer or snack selection, they will have you covered. Aside from the actual products, my five stars really go to the gentlemen working here. There is one guy in particular (and I apologize that I didn't even get his name) that is so fun to interact with. He remembered me after visiting only one time. Nicest people EVER. Sandwiches are good at all hours and reasonably priced. Other items are ehh price-wise, but the service is absolutely top-notch. AND they deliver. They slip a menu in your bag of the basics to order. Coffee, soda, breakfast sandwiches, chips, etc. (Minimum a mere $5.) I have a client who lives around the corner from this place. And I usually hit this place up for snacks if I need to do some extended work for her. I love that they sell the typical Drakes products (tough to find in NYC, though maybe not on Amsterdam Ave) like Devil Dogs, but they also sell Marinelo products like Gansitos (NOM). Their beer selection is just OK, I can find my beergaritas but nothing fancy like craft beer selection. I have never ordered from Their grill but when I've walked past in the morning, the smell of bacon is INTENSE. Unless you are a vegan, it's like Pavlov's dog! They get a star for the people who work there. They are always so nice! And their flower selection. When I visit Mom in Jerz, my husbo and I usually bring her fresh cut flowers. There's a reason why this run-of-the-miss corner bodega has a string of five-star reviews. It's the best bodega in the city. Mike and Bobby, the guys behind the counter, always remember you and love to joke. They don't judge, either. Show up drunk at 4am looking for a tuna melt? Of course you want a tuna melt. They don't seem to mind if you tear through the freezer looking for the last container of Coffee Heath Bar Crunch. Hell, they'll help you it. The food is just average, but isn't that what you want? They make a mean sausage egg and cheese and an even better BLT. The delivery is the fastest around, just in case you want that tuna melt and ice cream brought right to your door. They also deliver eggs, cleaning supplies, milk, toothpaste, soup -- you name it, they'll bring it. Sometimes I think of excuses to hang out there and share a laugh with the guys behind the counter. I thought that all bodegas were like this considering it was the first one I went to when I moved to the UWS in June. Lets just say I'm spoiled now. From the first few times we wandered into 82nd Street Grocery, the guys behind the counter (our dear dear friends Mikey and Bobby) wanted to learn our names. My two other roommates and I laughed with them and said they'd better remember us. Oh boy did they. We asked for more flavors of drinks, they got them. We told them that the layout of the store got you trapped, they rearranged. They've made me sandwiches when I can't see straight at 3am and then joked with me the next night about it. They are legitimately the nicest two people I have met in this city yet. This bodega has more flavors of Ben & Jerrys than I've ever seen anywhere. There hasn't been anything I've asked for that hasn't shown up. I cannot believe that this is our bodega, I'm seriously really lucky. God love Mikey and Bobby. read more

I was verbally accosted by a male customer inside the store and the two men behind the counter just stood there and said nothing. The male customer decided to non-stop scold me, berate me , verbally attack me - all because he saw me entering the store without thanking a different person upon my entering the store, the person leaving who apparently held the door open. So, because I failed to thank a different person (I was fiddling with my mask with one hand and my other hand was holding on to a pet), and I honestly didn't even notice anyone holding a door, I am deserving of being verbally attacked? Apparently the staff agreed. They stood by while this male customer, who was standing at the counter, proceeded to chew me out and call me all kinds of names. I stood up for myself and told him he was the one being rude for confronting me. We went on like this back and forth while for awhile. I defended myself and he berated me and continued to call me names: like stupid, privileged, uneducated, rude, etc etc he went on and on. I tried to shop for the item I needed and just get out. He followed me around the corner berating me, he blocked my way from paying, eventually moving away to let me pay. Yes I defended myself because this man was verbally attacking me and I wasn't going to do nothing. I kept saying: you know nothing about me or my situation, who are you to judge me, you are the one being rude by confronting me, gee thanks for teaching me the lesson, etc. Eventually when I asked the two men behind the counter for help, one of them came out from behind the counter, stood next to the male customer, put a hand on his shoulder, and told me he was a good guy. I guess I should be thankful for my mask because I probably would have been personally attacked and berated for not smiling. I do not recommend this store because I was verbally attacked while shopping and the staff didn't help me feel safe at all when I pleaded for them to intervene. read more

I knew this was the place when my girlfriend came back with Jhonny's business card one night and said, "OMG, I love this place, Jhonny was so nice and he said next time, just call and he'll deliver it, no problem!" Well, Jhonny (I hope that wasn't just a typo on your business card) is the man and so are his colleagues/comrades/sidekicks/wingmen who work there. You name it, they have it and they'll deliver it. Roses for the lady on your way home? Always a great selection and two dozen for $10-$12 depending on the market... no seriously. Impromptu wine and cheese party without any crackers? Two boxes of Wheat Thins coming up for delivery. Hurricane Irene on the way and realize you could use some good last minute snacks and emergency supplies with a copy of the Post? Of course, Jhonny is open still you silly goose. Watching the MLB playoffs and realize your out of beer? Six pack of Sam Adams Octoberfest on the way from Jhonny and the guys. Sunday and in need of quarters to finish your laundry loads? Just say pretty please with a pack of gum and Jhonny makes it happen. I honestly think this is the best bodega in NYC. They're super friendly, they have everything, and they make some of the best sandwiches. I work right across the street, and am usually in at least twice a day... Everything's always stocked and clean, and you can tell they're always doing their best to get you in and out as fast as they can. They're awesome. I recommend the turkey club!! read more

Love this place, and I agree that the guys who are always - always - there at night are its best feature. Seriously, some fine restaurants' managers could learn a thing or two about customer service from these guys - they're always friendly, they remember you, they engage you in conversation but don't intrude (and don't judge you if you're buying chips and salsa at 4:00AM), and they generally keep you coming back. I must say that I'm more likely to buy spare groceries and Sapporo pounders than I am to get deli, so I can't comment on their food, but they still deserve a '5'. read more
