This place is like a giant barn and is filled with gorgeous shelves of yarn from floor to ceiling. I gasped audibly the first time I walked in. I got some Brittany birch dpns here and a few other accessories.. stitch markers, I believe. I had trouble finding the prices for most of the yarn (are they not marked or am I just blind?) but ended up buying two big hanks anyway. They also have a ton of books and a large sitting area, I imagine for classes/workshops. It's a beautiful place. read more

I have finally found a yarn store in New York worth going to again, and again, and again... This place is awesome. It's tucked away in an old dime store storefront in Carroll Gardens/Red Hook, and it's basically the most charming store of all time. Antique fixtures, shelves with those sliding ladders, old wood everywhere - and all teeming with beautiful yarns and fabrics. Their prices are as good as any you'll find in the area, and the shopping experience is so much more pleasant there than the cramped shops of Manhattan. They've got a broad selection of wools and more exotic fibers - didn't see a lot of vegan yarns, but I wasn't exactly looking for them (hello, wool is the best anyway, yes?) They also carry a beautiful selection of fabrics, some sewing supplies (patterns, needles, shears, etc) and I saw somebody carding up some gorgeous batts for spinning in the back while we were there. They stock wooden straights and dpns, and metal circulars - probably Addis, though I didn't get a good look. Unfortunately no Denise kits or refills - my only disappointment of the evening. Good sale section in the back. All in all, I'll definitely be going back! read more

I must say I wasn't quite sure what to expect, reading the last several very mixed reviews on this place. As soon as I set foot in the door, however, I fell in love. I think this is my new favorite place in Brooklyn. Comparable to Purl Soho, only without the crowds and (dare I say it?) I think they might even have a better selection! It took a while to get the attention of a staff person as they were both very engaged with other customers, but ultimately when I had the chance I asked for help and received it readily. I've always liked Brooklyn General and have taken a couple classes there in the past. They've recently revamped the store layout and it looks great, very organized and welcoming. They carry beautiful fabrics and yarns, lots of knitting and sewing books, and various notions. The past few times I've been in, the staff has been very kind and helpful to me and to others in the store. My only wish is that they'd keep on top of their inventory; they have been out of things I've gone in for (and know they usually stock) on several visits, and it takes awhile for them to get it in stock. That said, I like having this store in my neighborhood and would definitely recommend it to others. read more

Been to yarn/fabric stores from coast to coast and this one wins for everything: selection (inspired), atmosphere (think the General Store in Little House on the Prairie), friendliness (the sofa and table in the back are comfy and inviting to the weary knitter looking for a place to do a few rows and chat--and the service has always been with a smile), great classes (I've taken knitting, needle felting, and sewing ones, and so have my kids), kid-friendliness (there's a dollhouse for playing while mom shops endlessly and stands around saying "gauge swatch blah blah blah" and "bias tape blah blah blah"). Just made tablecloths and napkins for thanksgiving from their beautiful fabric and fingerless mitts from their yarn for my mother's birthday the day after. read more

Fantastic! The staff is very helpful, and super friendly (but not in an over bearing way). There is a wide variety of yarns in every color imaginable and the prices can't be beat. I have never taken a class at Brooklyn General, but they seem to be creative and interesting. This is my go-to yarn shop! read more

Gorgeous store and items but extremely expensive and geared towards their in-house classes. If you just want a wide selection of fabric and sewing items this is not the store for you. If you want to take classes in inspiring surroundings and have the $$$ to pay for it, you're in the right place. read more

The prices for the knitting needles that I brought were right on point. Especially for the quality of the needles they had at the store. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. They helped me find exactly what I needed and were able to point me in the right direction to things that they thought I would need for the project I was working on. Nice selection of printed fabrics and wools. High quality assortment of notions. A great place for knitters and the like. I was there for sewing supplies and was able to pick up a lot of basic tools which I needed to build my sewing kit. The store is very well organized and makes shopping for items a breeze. One of the staff was helpful and took time to answer my questions. read more

My favorite yarn shop. A bit out of the way but the spaciousness of it makes up for it. They have most of the regulars in stock. They have madelinetosh, Manos, lots of sock yarns, Noro. Also specialty yarns that you might only be able to find at festivals. They don't carry colors that are in right now (neon, fluorescent). , more earth tones. Their notions seem to be on the pricier side, meaning they sell quality scissors and bags. Not that they inflate the MSRP. It's never too crowded or hectic. Was in search of hard-to-find Jamieson's Shetland wool and found these folks who carry it, and a whole boatload of other gorgeous fibers, books and notions. Non intrusive but accessible employees, who let you do your thing but are more than happy to engage if that's what you are looking for. I think their philosophy is right: assume folks who come into a high end yarn store that's a tad hard to get to (F TRAIN and a nice hike) know what they are doing craft wise. If you are a beginner, why not tell them so and ask for help? Don't assume they will hover, they won't and they shouldn't. But every time I've been in, the employees are happy to dive into my project full bore with gauge and color suggestions and a nice dose of good crafting humor as well (who but real hard core knitters tell stash jokes??) They also have some lovely yarns I don't see everywhere and they are pro-local artist which I love to support. I'll be back again and again. Next time I'll sit myself down and stitch a bit too. read more

This store is wonderful! I think it takes the cake as my favorite place to go in all of New York. It is so cozy and beautiful, they have an incredible yarn selection, and their fabrics are pretty and reasonably priced. Before I found this place I would usually go to Purl in Soho, but this place is so much more down to earth and unpretentious. The woman who works there knows almost everyone's name who comes in, and gave me some good ideas for my projects. They have a sale rack at the back of the store, and I have gotten a very good price on everything I have bought there. Coming here makes me want to make so many things! read more

The staff was very patient and helpful and were knowledgable about yarns and knitting. You can , I guess, go and get some yarn cheaply at some big chain store but you can't beat talking with someone who knows a lot about knitting, which they seem to know. The yarns were offered at different prices, depending on what it was made out of and they had a couple of sale racks (which unfortunately you couldn't use with a yelp coupon) All in all a good experience. read more

I love, love, love Brooklyn General Store. One of the first things that attracted me to the store were the magazines/books they sell - I live in the BRONX and come all the way out here to see what's new, and there is always a new pattern book I've haven't seen at other LYSs - it's great. The yarn selection is fantastic. I've come across new yarns that I've seen advertised in, for example, Vogue Knitting, which is exciting - I don't see these yarns in Manhattan yarn shops - shops that you would think would carry these yarns and don't - that alone is enough for the travel.
