What a wonderful place! After visiting two other popular yarn shops in the city and not finding what I was looking for, BGS had plenty to offer. They have an extensive selection of quality yarn in a range of prices (not just ultra pricey stuff as I'd encountered elsewhere), not to mention a great sale section. The staff is very friendly and helpful, definitely wanted me to go home happy (but also weren't pushy or trying to upsell me). I can't comment on the fabric as I wasn't looking for any, wasn't paying attention. Definitely my favorite yarn shop in NY! Worth a visit! read more

I've been here twice. I really like the concept of this place being like a general store for all things fiber. Very nice selection of yarn, nice fabrics. A small section of fiber and spinning supplies, but I wish it was larger. It's also quite expensive. Nothing in the shop is cheap. But this being in one of the most expensive cities in the country, and the fact that their supplies are very good quality, makes up for it. The people who work there are really friendly, too. It's about a 10 minute walk from the nearest subway stop so it's a bit of a trek, but it's through a nice neighborhood. read more

I went during the Brooklyn Yarn Crawl this year. The two stars are for the lovely woman outside greeting customers. I wish I got her name. As a yarn newbie (just started crocheting last year), the welcoming spirit of the prior two LYS had me in a great mood. I get here and that mood continued...until I walked in the store with my mom. The two young ladies barely glanced up. One at least said hi. That was the extent. Didn't ask if we were with the crawl. Didn't ask me if I knew what type of yarn I like or if I'm working on a project. Didn't point out any shop exclusives for the crawl. Nothing. The cute little dog was more friendly. A little girl came in and listening to her, she clearly has been knitting for some time. She was talking to one of the salesgirls, peppering her with questions and opinions and while polite, the sales clerk looked like she could barely be bothered. She clearly wanted to get back to her own project that she was working on. There were free pins at each store and no offer as I'm purchasing yarn. I had to ask. It just wasn't welcoming and I feel like if this store was my first stop, it would've given me the impression that all yarn shops are like this. I found the selection to be nice. Pricing was the highest out of all four shops. The interior of the shop is really nice. Has an old time general store look, which gives the store so much character. But I wouldn't go back just on the basis of the non existing customer service inside the store. If the woman who was outside, was inside, then my opinion would probably be different. I was very impressed with the fabric selection as well as the fact that there was a sizable clearance section. I was buying small amounts of various patterns for a starch on the wall project. If I was looking for something that needed more fabric I may need to plan out my budget carefully here since things were priced on the higher end, however, the quality was apparent. Staff was friendly and also allowed me to look unsolisited for as long as I needed (I'm a careful decider when it comes to craft items). First impression: This store is visually stunning! Even the sales girl matched the ambiance. I really enjoyed perusing their fabrics- they even had rolls of vinyl, which I have never seen before. When I told the saleswoman I was a novice, she didn't snub me, which I appreciated. She even helped me by showing me books of Children's clothing/project patterns and directed me toward the bin on the floor which had a number of cute outfits for kids also. As my skill level increases and my need for new materials grows, I will go back and reassess the shop. I think I will take a sewing class there, too, so stay tuned ;) read more

I was in the area and stopped in this store for a visit. I would have stayed to shop more, but they said they had no restroom I could use, so I left after paying for the one skein I chose. They offer classes here, so I can't believe they have no restroom for customer use. But the two workers were too busy talking about their other jobs that they hardly acknowledged me anyway. I recently moved to the area and was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon this store. It's like my candy store. The yarn selection is great! I would compare it to that of Purl Soho. I found the staff extremely helpful not only regarding their merchandise, but both times I visted, the lady at the counter answered a knitting/crochet question for me. The layout of the store is very inviting, well-stocked, but not overwhelming. I could spend hours in there very easily. It's a pretty organized store. I like that they have everything organized by weight: the further back you go the heavier the yarn. My only complaint would be that the pattern books look a bit disorganized, and I didn't see some of the recent titles that are bestsellers. read more

I have seen other's reviews about rude staff, but I haven't really experienced it here first hand. I have also gone in recently to see whether I am greeted when I enter and if I need help, and every time in my last 4 visits someone behind the counter has spoken to me. The yarn selection is quite possibly the best in Brooklyn. They have a great loyal customer program and very interesting classes available too. My only complaint is that they need to replenish their button stock. On a side note, I took 2 knitting classes back in 2009. The teacher was very helpful and informative. I've gone on to make tons of knitted garments, and beyond those two classes, have never had additional help. That's good teaching. read more

I've been shopping at Brooklyn General since it was a tiny little corner in the front of the owner's home years ago. It literally is my go-to store and as someone who sews, knits, crochets, dyes fabric and embroiders, it never disappoints. Want 100% wool felt from Germany in 50 colors? Merchant & Mills sundries? Notions of every kind? Milk paint? Cushing dyes? Wool to stuff a pillow? Fabric to make a quilt, handbag, blouse? Thread to sew them up AND a luscious selection of yarns in every weight and price point? It's all here. They also have lovely events featuring top knitwear designers, classes galore and are a distributor for Bernina sewing machines. If this store ever closed I don't know what I would do. The staff is all incredibly knowledgeable and available if you have a question or need help and never too overbearing if you're on a mission and know what you need. It's impossible to enter and not come out with inspiration and something new. They've always had a great selection of nature inspired colors and it's great to see them adding more brights and edgy colors of late as well as a fantastic assortment of indie dyers - keeping fresh with what's new. read more

I've been to Brooklyn General twice now, both times on the weekends. I'm usually an online yarn shopper, but I find their prices generally competitive with other LYSes around the city. I wish they had a better stock of Madelinetosh and Malabrigo yarns, and I REALLY wish they carried Brooklyn Tweed, but they've had a great selection of Dream In Color and smaller dyers around the east coast. I love Brooklyn General. They have gorgeous yarn. I've become a Madeline Tosh fan thanks to the selection I've found there, and have discovered several new, beautiful yarns. I use a lot of Koigu KPPM, and love being able to see the colors as opposed to having to hope what I'm seeing online is accurate, which I had to do before finding Koigu at Bklyn Gen. Only giving four stars instead of five because I wish they had a more complete palette of Koigu and larger quanitities of dyelots for some of the yarns. I like the new layout of the store, and love that I can get my skeins of yarn wound into balls before I leave, saves me so much time. Like Lisa B, I used to live just a few blocks away and now have to travel to get to Bklyn General, but it's definitely worth the trip. I'm surprised to read a review about rude staff. Lovely higher-end fabrics, trims and yarn. The store stocks some really nice designer fabric - I got a nice cloud-9 print. The shop was well organized, and the sales-woman very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. She greeted me when I ended, and asked what I was making when I selected my fabric. Also, I asked about embroidery classes, and she told me know that none were scheduled at the moment, but she took my information to let me know if/when they schedule another. I passed this place all the time whilst living in the Waterfront District, and for whatever reason the fabrics in the window always caught my attention. Well, just so happened I recently needed to reupholster my couch cushion after moving so I decided to take my first steps into a fabric store. While I found the help to be somewhat cold and clinical (I had no idea what I was doing/what to ask for), they did get me what I needed, and turned out to be measured quite well. As for the fabric, again, I'm no fine arts student, but I happen to really like it and it appears to be of high quality for the price point - though I have no real basis for comparison. Would give it 4 stars for the really cool fabrics in there alone, but the personnel drops it to 3. read more

I did not have a good experience at Brooklyn General Store. I purchased a Groupon for my pregnant sister for this business and was VERY DISAPPOINTED. After choosing from their slim pickings, she carried her items to the register, where we met the unhelpful counter woman. The woman then told us that we couldn't use the Groupon on sale items. I'm tired of these businesses, luring people to their establishments with Groupon's and then changing their rules as they go along- just as Brooklyn General Store did. The woman at the counter (who I believed to be the manager, considering she was the ONLY PERSON THERE "Heather Love") told us we can purchase the items WITHOUT the Groupon and, then use the Groupon on something else. WTF, after walking for 45 minutes from the subway, spending $4.50 on a crazy subway, and taking the LIRR!!! NO way. We ended up having to buy the SALE yarn at FULL price to use the Groupon. My sister really wanted the yarn to make something for the baby she's having so, she just bought the yarn at full price. THE GROUPON RECEIPT PRINT OUT, NOR THE DETAILS FROM THE GROUPON LINK (BTW: which is created by the store) SAID NOTHING ABOUT WHETHER YOU COULD USE THE GROUPON ON SALE ITEMS OR NOT. After I checked all the sources and said something to "Ms Heather Love" about it, she still didn't want to acknowledge or honor it. She also checked and, saw that there was NOTHING stating whether you can use the Groupon on sale items or not. She should have just let us use the Groupon on our items. It really would not have made a difference for them. There are defiantly more details missing from this story but I'm trying to keep this as brief as possible. there are few things in this world that could possibly make me want to knit or sew. i am an extremely impatient and clumsy person. i am not the type who wants to take their time with an arduous project or be the girl on the subway with a lap full of yarn, slowly but surely crafting a scarf for her boyfriend. however, brooklyn general is changing all of that for me. i popped in here a few times feeling rather out of place (they can smell the non-sewer! swarm, swarm!). but then realized that the staff was warm and smiling and i was a-ok. there is so much fun stuff in here! i have no idea what i would do with it, but a friend who is an avid seamstress/milliner was enthralled. tons of yarns and notions and whatnot to choose from in the most amazing array of colors and textures. there is also a shitton of cool fabrics including some great vintage goodies. i feel like their prices are reasonable too-i was looking for some fabric on etsy a while before stopping into brooklyn general and found the same exact stuff at b.g. for considerable less scrizzle. i likey. there are also little cute things strewn about that are actually already made like nifty puppets and bags and such. i am going to take a class here, damnit. i am going to take sewing 101 and then work my way up to knitting. i'm going to make some cozy vests for my cats come winter. just watch me! read more
