Update July 26: We ended up at BluePearl again, this time because Ruben's breathing rate was unusually high. He had recently stopped taking his heart medication after his cardiologist determined that his heart condition had resolved. Once again, the staff quickly took him back and stabilized him. Then began the wait. BluePearl appears to triage patients based on urgency, and they were not noticeably but apparently busy that day. As a result, Ruben spent much of the day in an oxygenated cage, from about 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Thankfully, I did not have to stay there the entire time. In the end, the diagnosis was somewhat different from what we initially expected. Ruben does not have early congestive heart failure, as was suggested by the remote radiologist's preliminary interpretation. However, the team did take seriously the possibility of asthma, which had been raised by my cardiologist over the phone. I'm reducing my rating by half a star, bringing it to 4.5 stars. Overall, I believe Ruben received excellent care. The veterinarian listened carefully to my concerns about sedation and treated him thoughtfully. My main concern is staffing. It appeared that there was only one very busy veterinarian on duty, and she was unable to interpret the X-rays herself. As a result, several hours passed before the imaging could be completed, and then additional time was needed to obtain a reading from an off-site radiologist. I understand that Ruben was stable and that other patients may have required more urgent attention. Still, from my perspective, increased staffing might have allowed him to be evaluated sooner. Ruben is a good patient, but he does not enjoy veterinary visits, and spending nearly the entire day there was stressful for both of us. That said, BluePearl remains my first choice for emergency veterinary care. The staff are compassionate, and I continue to trust them when Ruben needs urgent treatment. read more

St. James, my 9-year-old chihuahua, died within three hours of a blood transfusion at BluePearl. When he was discharged to me, he was acting strangely and struggling to breathe. I showed the nurse right away and was told it could be an initial transfusion reaction. I was terrified and pleaded for help, but was told all tests had been completed and he was still sent home. The doctor never spoke to me. Over the next three hours, I watched him deteriorate -- breathing heavily, confused, and clearly in distress -- while I was completely powerless to help him in his time of need. No words can capture how painful and traumatic it was to witness. St. James lived such a beautiful, joyful life, and he deserved comfort and dignity at the end -- not this. Its incredibly frustrating, however, to wait 2 hours, pay $450 ($277 for the ER visit) only to be told they won't / can't administer the first round of medication (eye drops and anti-anxiety medication). Even after explaining that I'm going to have a really difficult time administering her medication they said they can't do it because they are too busy. If I could leave a negative star i would. Where to begin, I brought my Bonnie in at 4 o'clock in the afternoon because she was throwing up. Other than het throwing up she was alert and moving. The staff took her upstairs at 4 but the doctor did not call me until 630 to ask me about her background. He proceeded to tell me that he would do an xray and give het fluids and take het blood work. 6 hours later the doctor could not diagnose her but stated there was no foreign object obstruction and that she had a low white blood cell count. He recommended over night IV but for an additional 3k on top of the 1700 that I already paid. I asked if he had checked for a UTI he said he did not. He stated he couldn't do an ultra sound until Tues. So basically after 9 hours he couldn't give me a diagnosis . I told him I will take her home and asked that he give het IV anti biotic before I took het home he would not. My question is if her white blood cell could was low why didn't he give het IV anti biotic immediately. He never gave her any anti biotic. I took my beautiful Bonnie home. She could not walk and she could barely lift her head. I played on the floor next to her and in 2 hours she was DEAD. She went in fine and after 9 hours in the ER she is DEAD. She was only 10 and up until today in perfect health. There is no excuse. Please if you love your pets do not bring them here. Their only concern is about the money they dont care about your pets. Great experience during an emergency ! We came in at 12am and we were seen immediately! The doctor and nurse was very nice and transparent My dog's anal glands ruptured and she got an infection. She was not eating or drinking water all day. She was extra fatigue and bleeding from her bottom area. It was very scary! The doctor cleaned the area and gave her pain medicine/ antibiotics. Starting cost for an examination is $244. The cost ended up to be $575 after cleaning the area and the cost of the medication. This might be higher because it's not a primary vet. We brought our dog Bronx here in critical condition with suspected leptospirosis and kidney failure. Unfortunately, communication during a very serious medical emergency was extremely poor. We were repeatedly told tests would be done and updates would come, but hours passed with no information. At one point we were told bloodwork was being run, and later learned it hadn't been done. Our dog had not produced urine for an extended period which is a major emergency in kidney failure -- yet we struggled to get clear answers or a sense of urgency. We also received conflicting information from different doctors. One doctor told us he was exhausted from working overtime and wanted to go home soon. The next day, another doctor informed us that he was not a regular staff member and had only been there temporarily. This added to the feeling of disorganization during a critical situation when we needed confidence and clarity. We constantly had to push for updates and felt like we were chasing information rather than being supported. Eventually we learned dialysis might be needed, but this hospital does not offer it. We transferred Bronx to AMC, where she was evaluated immediately and is now receiving dialysis. I understand emergency hospitals are busy, but when a pet is this sick, communication, coordination, and transparency matter just as much as treatment. Simple straight forward, let's try this, before that...watch for this, come back for that...yes, we can run the urine that you collected in the sterile jar (and no, you did not scrape the urine off the ground...) I won't call out the Vet's specifically because I know we are all doing out best, that said: - make sure that before you 'hand-off' your pet know that there headed into a black hole of poor judgement around doggy behaviors and needs--traumatizing the animal and not being able to even get him on the scale. - prepare for excessive vet splaining, over corrective measures and dismissal of how the owner's calm and knowledgeable presence can actually create better vet visits. - expect excessive, costly and invasive measures of evaluation/assessment for what the first course of action should be simple antibiotics. - a fundamental lack of bedside or compassionate care. Sorry Blue Pearl, I don't know what happened to you pandemic, but whoever was there before was wonderful, straightforward and kind. I understand that Vets have one of the hardest jobs, and hats off to them, but listening, observing and thoughtfully problem solving should be an essential in any vet tool kit--this was clearly lacking last night. If you have deep pockets and blindly believe that your pet is the best of hands, then this place is for you. BluePearl is an unethical, incompetent, and dangerously careless corporate vet hospital. I lost my beloved cat after two visits here, including an unnecessary overnight stay that cost nearly $4,000 and added stress to his final days. Their one-directional, subjective diagnosis, refusal to consider context, and complete lack of compassion or medical rigor caused real harm -- and I don't want any other pet or guardian to go through what we did. It took me 6 months to be able to recall this traumatic experience with them. I brought my cat in after he suddenly began limping and crying in pain. For the 10-14 days prior, he had a reduced appetite. I had doubled his asthma medication a month earlier and suspected the appetite loss might've been related. He seemed anxious but wasn't visibly in respiratory distress -- it was the vet who pointed out rapid breathing and insisted on a heart issue. I explained his history of asthma and anxiety, but they ignored it, claimed to see "fluid near the heart" on an X-ray, and immediately pushed for an overnight stay. When I contacted an outside cardiologist who was available that same day and considered sending my cat over to them immediately, BluePearl insisted on speaking directly with them and having my cat stay overnight in the oxygen box, rather than transparently sharing imaging or seeking a second opinion. I deeply regret not demanding the X-ray transfer and taking up the vet's diagnosis. The cardiologist later told me they had very little visibility into how severe the heart issue really was to be able to have a productive convo with Blue Pearl on the day. The entire exchange felt manipulative and opaque. Meanwhile, the actual reason for the visit -- my cat's limp -- was completely overlooked. No general physical exam. No painkillers. Just an overnight oxygen box and a massive bill. When I transferred him to the cardiologist the next day, they immediately found a tumor on his leg with a basic exam -- something BluePearl should have caught instantly. I later received a medical report that barely documented his symptoms but did include that I "complained about the cost." That says everything about their priorities. They also sent the record over to the cardiologist super late despite our multiple times of request and how urgent the situation was. I called to complain, and a corporate rep gave me nearly two hours of confusing, legalistic talk with no accountability and no follow-up in writing despite my request. They offered a "free exam," but that visit was no better. A staff member (not a receptionist) condescendingly asked, "Who told you that you didn't have to pay?" My sick, anxious cat was locked away and left waiting for over an hour. In the end, they gave him pain meds -- which I still had to pay over $150 for -- and later called to say the dosage was too low and asked me to return for more. Absolutely maddening. Eventually I brought my cat to VERG emergency hospital, where he received immediate, compassionate, and competent care. The vet there suspected fast-growing late-stage cancer and helped me make the painful but humane decision to let him go. I only wish he had experienced that level of care sooner. At that point he was in great pain and not able to sleep or eat for over 4 days. To summarize: BluePearl gave a rushed, subjective, one-directional diagnosis, failed to investigate obvious symptoms, ignored the full medical picture, and charged thousands while providing almost nothing of value. However, Dr did not know how to access current records on a different hospital's website, looking ant records three years old, and was quick to talk about euthanasia without having a full picture. This was extremely upsetting to us. Upon our vet's insistence, we transferred our pet to another hospital further away, where a thorough work up was done and they are currently stable and doing well, responding to treatment based on informed doctors, not opinion. I wonder if this doctor would appreciate this kind of poor response if it was her pet or her child? They were also overpriced for the services rendered-while we appreciate what the other staff was able to do to help in an emergency, this is NOT the place to leave your pet beyond that--and they are better than VERG, ( a horror show) which ignored our pleas to triage and our pet seized and injured themselves in the carrier waiting. No apologies from either facility. Brooklyn needs better for its pets. read more

Came here on a Saturday night at 8pm with our kitty with what turned out to be an anal gland rupture. I've always avoided this place bc of reviews and fear of inflated costs. The staff was phenomenal: kind, compassionate to both our cat and us (we are a queer couple so this matters considering our general experience in the world as of late). The front desk people - we were there till 2 am so multiple shifts - without exception were kind and caring. The doctor (Peter Arena) was informative and honest, patient and generous with time and care. I am so sorry I don't remember the name of the rest of the staff - the doctor's name is on our discharge papers and I was quite delirious from exhaustion by the end. They quoted us slightly more at first but it turned out to be not as bad so we got refunded a bit. This is such a stressful time/event and everyone made it bearable. Immediately they attended to Shiloh. He was was given emergency care. We felt welcomed. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Joyce met with me. She was very thorough and explained all possibilities. I listened to her and agreed to everything she suggested for Shiloh based on the diagnosis. Shiloh was admitted for a few days. He was in critical condition. Dr. Joyce saved Shiloh's life. My Shiloh made it through. It was a big scare for me. I am happy I chose Blue Pearl for emergency care. Instead of in the comfort of her home in my loving arms. Blue Pearl robbed me of 1 night being with her and spending quality time in her final day. If you plan to go to Blue Pearl Brooklyn location, pay careful attention to the words they use. They talk like Politicians and Attorneys. Using a lot of words and committing to nothing. Listen very carefully at this very stressful and emotional time before buying into paying for the False Hope they are selling you. Be aware of words like, it could be, it's possible, most likely or another underlying cause. All are designed to generate another Bill. The only fact they will commit to is the Bill amount you have to pay. After a week of treatment for pancreatis, and almost another $20,000 added to my Bill. I took Ruby to her Vet, who quickly concluded she most likely had a stroke. Blue Pearl attempted to send Ruby home for a third time even though she was still unresponsive. Not eating, drinking, walking or responding. Her head tilted to the side, one eye half shut, unable to do anything but roll around on her belly. She couldn't even bark or cry for help if in pain and suffering. She had no ability to communicate. Her jaw was locked. I couldn't get anything in her mouth, not even an eye dropper of water let alone all of the pills they sent me home with. YES, they had me take her home twice in this condition, only to return to put her in ICU. We paid dearly both Emotionally and Financially. Ultimately Ruby paid with a long sad end to a wonderful life. The prolonged suffering and misleading false diagnosis and treatment Ruby had received at the hands of Blue Pearl in her final week of life was Unprofessional, Unacceptable and Unforgivable. May no other Senior Citizen suffer like me and my Ruby. read more

Our 19.5 year old cat had a medical emergency and we brought him to BluePearl feeling distraught. He was having extensive trouble breathing and the staff took him to be triaged immediately upon walking in. I was relieved that he was able to be seen and attended to immediately. We only had to wait about 40 minutes for the vet to come down and speak to us about possible causes and next steps. At that time, our cat was stable; unfortunately, only 15 minutes after the vet went back upstairs with the intent to take some X-rays of his upper body, he stopped breathing and had to be revived. At that point, the vet told us that he was "much more critical than they initially thought" and that one option might be quality of life/end of life consideration. We went upstairs to see him and knew at that moment it was time to say goodbye. The nurses who were attending to our cat were very nice and respectful and seemed very empathetic, both in terms of taking care of our cat in his final hours, as well as in terms of how they treated us and gave us physical space to visit with him before euthanasia. The vet was calm and serious--much less emotional than the rest of the staff, but I appreciated her measured and straightforward approach. Everything felt a little rushed, but our cat's time had come and we needed to act quickly to put him to sleep before he suffered more. Overall, I'm extremely grateful to the staff at BluePearl and felt that my cat's last hours, though heartbreaking, were as straightforward as could be. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because I felt a bit rushed to make a decision with regard to what tests to run, how urgent it was to run them, and how necessary it truly was to put him through those procedures when his condition was deteriorating. This is not a criticism of the vet per se, as I know she has a lot on her plate and deals with complicated scenarios on a daily basis--many of which probably result in difficult conversations about euthanasia--but I do wish that the options for tests, procedures, potential surgery, etc. had been laid out slightly less urgently at the time, since we all believed our cat's condition was not so critical (i.e. before he stopped breathing and the urgency intensified). It made us feel confused and overwhelmed, especially since the estimate for cost of care was over $4900 if he had been hospitalized overnight with oxygen plus the same-day X-rays, which the vet strongly recommended at the least. It felt like all the costs were a necessary burden; whether or not we could have afforded them. Ultimately, I believe that our experience with euthanasia at BluePearl was the best it could have been. But I also want to give a heads up to other pet parents who may encounter barriers related to care due only to the related costs. No emergency animal hospital is inexpensive, and I respect that. Just know that your pet will be treated compassionately at BluePearl, and that you must be prepare to shoulder a bill while simultaneously working through the intense emotional distress that comes with your beloved pet's emergency. read more

I love BluePearl Brooklyn! Our dog has had 2 TPLO surgeries there with Dr. Grossbard. They are open 24/7 (I've called in the middle of the night with medication questions!) and very friendly. They are very knowledgeable and Dr. Grossbard will answer any questions you have. The people there really love animals! My only complaint is that parking is a mess (not their fault). There is a lot of construction in that area and it's a little tough to get the dog in and out, especially when they're post-op. I almost got towed one time and I was parked completely legally (just a jerk construction guy). Also, double check your itemized receipts. I had to correct her second surgery because they charged us for the wrong thing. A good emergency vet is hard to come by -- we loved the pros at BluePearl and definitely recommend for surgery. read more

I was charged nearly $400 just to be TOLD I would need to give my dog tests that would cost $7,400. Also, the vet told me a particular surgery would not be done because it would make my dog look "grotesque" and would not work anyway. Excuse me, grotesque? That is a cold word choice and a very shallow reason to not do a surgery. What does he care what my dog looks like? I did not take her to a groomer to get her ready for a dog show; I took her to an animal hospital for medical treatment for a RUNNY NOSE. Just tell me the surgery won't work, or don't even mention the unnecessary surgery at all. Don't bring up a surgery and then lead with a shallow reason not to do it. I felt dirty giving these people all this money for them to tell me how they would further scam me in the future. I'm taking my dog somewhere else for her tests. Update: in response to Blue Pearl's comment here about being upfront about their services - they did not bother to tell me my appointment would be nearly $400 until the very end. I'm so sad to have to post this review. I've been going to BluePearl for years and recently took my cat there in May 2024. He was terminally I'll and I had to make the difficult decision to put him down. I trusted BluePearl with this sensitive and delicate moment. I requested and paid for, his ashes to be returned to me. But they entered the order wrong and instead of receiving a private cremation, he got a communal one and his ashes were lost to me forever. This is completely the hospital's fault. Just human error and they didn't incorporate any checks or balances to prevent this error. I am devastated. Just distraught, over this error. My beloved cat won't be returned to me so I can care for his ashes and keep him in his loving home. He's gone. He's scattered somewhere random, and he's all alone. I'm completely heartbroken. I'm horrified that a pet hospital would be so careless with a deeply loved family member. It's unforgivable. BluePearl refunded me the cost of cremation services, but it pales in comparison to the lifelong emotional damage and devastation they caused. I beg of you to take your pets to a different hospital. This is what was left when Bob died. You're looking at over $650 worth of medications, prescribed to him by his cardiologist, Dr Singletary; whom we saw religiously at Blue Pearl Brooklyn for a year. Clearly, all this was not enough, and he died during the wee hours of 10/29/23. We spent over 8 hours at the ER at BP on 10/28/23. The experience was a complete nightmare. Having been a patient for over a year, I would have never guessed that it would have been this way; told to wait hours, then made to wait even more. They pushed other pets ahead of us, and acted like we were trying to abandon our little baby boy. Our ER doctor, Dr Phipps, was aggressive and combative. She spoke over us constantly. We tried to explain Bob's medical history to her and she ignored us, and told us we were wrong. We begged for someone to reach out to Dr Singletary. She was never called. After Bob died, we raised complaints with BP management, as we were horrified at the way we had been treated, only to come home with false hope, and our baby to die less than 6 hours after being discharged. Blue Pearl Management, specifically Dr Laura Stock, does not care about the health and safety of our pets. All she cares about is the bottom line. When we had a meeting with Dr Stock, she lied in our faces. All of our concerns were met with extreme defensiveness. I can't tell you how many emails and phone calls we have made since that have gone unanswered. They are now ignoring us completely. We were forced to pay $1,544 for the privilege of having our cat killed slowly while we watched. In total, we have spent more than $10,000 at Blue Pearl, but even that didn't earn us enough good will to be treated like fellow human beings. **BEWARE** If you truly value the health and safety of your pet, PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE - Going to Blue Pearl that day is one of the biggest regrets of our lives. read more

Really appreciate the COVID precautions! All staff members were wearing masks and they take all human visitor temperatures before you enter. The facility is nice and clean, with festive decorations, and was not depressing at all. The staff seems to really enjoying working here and I really enjoyed the workplace banter and chatter that was going on while I waited to pickup our pup after the examination. I am so impressed that I was shown to an examination room right on time for my appointment and that I didn't need to wait in the waiting room/lobby. The vet tech came into the examination room and was very professional and thorough with me while they took down our pup's medical history and was so kind and patient with our pup. The information was relayed to the Internist, Dr. Joseph Campbell, and then our pup was taken to the back for an ultrasound. After the ultrasound was reviewed, the Dr. Campbell came over and spent a solid 20+ minutes with me to go through his evaluation and treatment plan. I love that he cited scientific literature in response to my questions and carefully listened to my concerns. While we still aren't sure what's going on with our pup, I know she's in really good hands with Dr. Campbell. The front desk staff was also great, and fulfilled my requests to send me electronic invoices, follow up with pricing for specific tests, and even sent over the visit summary over to our local vet without me needing to follow up! My dog needed an operation. I was nervous! However, Dr.Grossbard and his team were very confident that he would be a good canidate for this procedure. We went through with it and my dog recovered perfectly. They are very caring people and understand that our pets are like our children. The place is literally spotless and extreamly clean! Also shout out to the desk workers they are kind, patient, & friendly! Even though the price was a little expensive, it is what it is at the end of the day because you would want a qualified team working on your dog opposed to other emergency vet centers in the area! I took my pet for heart issues, the receptionist was giving medical advice, explaining that foul order came from his heart, ask the doctor told us no not accurate information. Secondly they took our pet for treatment. 1,2nd day we received a call saying he's ok, we wanted to go see him by 3 or if we can go now at 11am, we were told in case we come do u want us to resuscitate, or urbanize him. we we're confused they just told us he was ok and now the story changed we left rushed to the hospital when we saw our pet he was going into hypoglycemic shock we took him and started our best to get him back to us, no iv no fluids were attached to him. I don't how u can just see him going into that stage and do nothing. If we went at 3 on like we planned we would gotten bad news. Never again.. read more

I went here today with my cat Sylvester. It seems like he had an eye infection and I got nervous so I wanted to doctor to take a look at it. It was a long day and I was really tired. I checked in they put me in an exam room I fell asleep with Sylvester an hour later I woke up. Nobody had come into the room, not even a nurse to check on us. I went and told the lady at the desk and she acted surprised that nobody came and saw me. She made a call to see if anybody could see us and they said no they were too busy so I went home and now I'm leaving a review . Maybe I'll take Sylvester somewhere tomorrow. Kind of weird been here before had a better experience, but maybe I just went to the wrong place. Oh I completely understand how an ER works but your team completely forgot that I was even on the premises with my cat waiting for service so it wasn't that I was impatient or looking for something that you couldn't provide you guys forgot I was there. The woman even said so at the desk. Listen, you got a great business and I'm sure you provide help to people all the time. I'm just pointing out what happened to me? Last weekend my sister's dog, Luna, climbed up to my dining table and ate eggs with chives when no one was looking. It was a worrisome amount of chives and I ended up rushing her to BluePearl. Thankfully they were able to take in Luna immediately and I filled out paperwork in the meantime. At the bottom of the form it stated that the consultation price was $229. I was contacted by the vet a few times through the phone and she offered two options for Luna. I went with the one that forced her to throw up, which incurred another charge of $130. There is a waiting area outside with seats, which I stayed at for the entirety of the time. Towards the end, I made a payment online and they returned Luna to me safe and sound.
