Could not have ran to write this comment soon enough. I was seen in the physical medical rehab rehabilitation department (PMR) and from the start, the receptionist was unkind and the physician was 30 minutes late to get me for my appointment. Whenever I got to the appointment, I explained that I just had major hip surgery and that all of the pain management I have done so far is not working. The attending (who I think needs to retire from his job completely, which is just a whole other story), said that I will just see another specialist and that they cannot do anything else for me and that I should just ice my hip. At the end of my appointment, I recap to the provider that they are doing nothing for me, and they are essentially sending me to a different provider who does the exact same thing as this provider and they said yes. Patient care is about advocating for the patient not just passing the buck along and I feel like that's exactly what is going on here and nobody wants to assume responsibility. It's really a shame and I was hoping to establish my care at the Brooklyn VA as I just moved here but unfortunately, one thing after another. I realize that this is not a patient centered center. It took doctor & nurses over an hour to attend me in the ER. Everyone else was upset about how long it took to get to see someone. The pharmacy is the WORST! Was told 30 minutes. Waited 1 hour to find out about my meds & was told that they were not in system as of yet. Another person was waiting 3 1/2 hours for EYE DROPS . Don't recommend this VA to anyone! Have had terrible interactions with doctors there in the past! No wonder they say they plan on closing this hospital down . read more

DOES NOT DESERVE 1 STAR!!!!! This Hospital should close their doors and should be ashamed of themselves for how they treat the Veterans who served this country. As for the 11th floor (I believe 11 west), most Nurses and Aides are incompetent and should be on the unemployment line. Their arrogance and attitudes are unacceptable and have been told so. I am not comfortable with my Father ever being admitted into this Hospital again, so I am hoping he will never allow himself to be admitted there again. I do not trust them, I do not appreciate their attitudes towards their patients and I do not trust them with his care. My Father was there for a week and it was a nightmare for him as well as myself for the entire duration of his stay. An Aide gave my Father a difficult time and yelled at him for requesting a pair of socks (THE AUDACITY!) Especially, given the fact that it had taken well-over an hour after he rang for assistance. You could die, waiting for someone to answer after you ring for assistance, and this is unacceptable. Then some low-life steals my Father's phone charger, and if all of this is not bad enough... The person my Father was in his room with, had Covid. So, this poor excuse for a Hospital, not only put my Father at risk, but put myself and my family members. To add insult to injury... I complained to the Nurse's Station that the person in my Father's room had been coughing, wearing no mask and felt my Father could be at risk, but it fell on deaf ears. You walk up to the Nurses Station and they are all chit-chatting, not acknowledging me, until I get annoyed and express so. Then, they ignore you or put their heads down as I'm explaining this person is constantly coughing and it needs to be addressed. Again, no one does a darn thing about it, until 5 days later when they test the person and find that he has Covid. I went to Patient Relations, only to be handed a form and told filling out the form would probably be just a waste of time. Can you believe this? I can't!!!! This is what they have working in this Hospital. If you can't believe it could get any worse, it does.... My Father's room was disgusting and FILTHY!!! I made several complaints about blood being on the floor in my Father's room which wasn't his, but the person who had Covid, the bathroom was filthy and garbage was left on the floor many times. After numerous complaints, they started to clean more consistently but you had to complain numerous times before it was done. This is also unacceptable! My heart goes out to the Veterans that are admitted into this Hospital. I noticed that many do not have visitors and have no one to speak up for them, and this gives the Aides and some Nurses free-will to mistreat or neglect their patients. The person my Father shared a room with had his hand tied, therefore could not eat by himself, so you would think the staff would have been on top of this and knew to feed him or untie his hands when meals were given out, but nooooo..... Hours later a Nurse would comes in, ask why he didn't eat and the poor Veteran would state "How am I suppose to eat, my hands are tied". How shameful and DISGUSTING!!! The Hospital staff eat and enjoy their meal breaks, but let a patient go unfed. I remain appalled, disgusted and angry and although I asked the Nursing Supervisor for the name of the Aide who yelled at my Father as well as the Nurses who were on staff that evening, she never gave me those names. I guess those who names were withheld are lucky, because they certainly would have endured the wrath of my fury! To the Administrator who was MIA... is this how you run a Hospital? Its shameful, it's despicable, and I will report this to whomever will listen. I AM NOT DONE!!! To those who have loved one's in this Hospital... please be at the forefront of his or her care, because if you choose not to do so, you are putting your loved one at risk. I would stay clear of this AWFUL PLACE, because this is not the first horrendous experience my Father had here, but the second. They will not get a third chance, if I can help it. read more

First time ever in a VA Hospital in NewYork receiving any kind of treatment and to my surprise they are on point the wait was not long

I would never recommend this hospital as it is completely unsanitary. I have had multiple infections following surgery in this hospital. The bed I was moved to following my surgery clearly still had feces from another patient and another patients blood on the floor. The surgical procedure body location changed on the day of my surgery simply to train a Radiologist in residence. Most staff are kind but GYN never follows up. It is sinful that on at 3 occassions the unclean conditions have put me in a detrimental situation. read more

I was honorably discharged with medical, so this is no ordinary axe to grind. I know how ppl can be, dismissive/judgemental, especially with un-professionalism & stigma surrounding mental health, which is RAMPANT, at the Brooklyn VA, and how quick people are to judge, invalidate, and dismiss our stories, gripes, complaints , and issues with fundamentally broken Mental Health care here. To them, we're just the "Crazy" patient, who does random things, pay no mind to our words, what do we know, right ? When I left the military, I had a comprehensive treatment plan for my mental health. The clinic I went to, in my last years in the military, private entity, cared. They cared. I was NOT a combat veteran, and have always been upfront about this, even the combat vets there, accepted me. With that said, All the moving pieces, people, and what have you, that are needed to make a person whole, were there. Their treatment plan, which went above and beyond just dispensing medication and hoping for miracles, just made sense. I put very big faith in the Brooklyn VA after leaving the service, that when the "baton" so to speak, was passed onto them, that they would know what to do, and get me back on my feet. My mental health care, has been haphazard, random, and quite frankly the bare minimum, just medications. They demand total compliance with medication and treat me like some kind of...... idiot for having concerns about side effects and me not agreeing with their downplaying of them. Well, I did comply, faithfully for 6 years, trying this , that and, the third. Mostly pills though. Look, I tried to do other things available there, generic group meetings where no one speaks candidly, sessions with therapists that felt like talking to a wall, etc. The VA is a scary ****ing place. Us veterans come from an environment, where "permission to speak freely" was a trick question. It's impossible for me to know who I can trust with my issues and who will leave me hanging, or if what I say, will somehow ruin my life unexpectedly. There is simply no way to know this upfront, in the midst of absolute mental anguish, who's really who and what's what. There have been multiple times, where I have spilled my guts to them, emotionally, only to be told "Well, come see us in X amount of months". Unless you are suicidal/homicidal , rdy to die in the parking lot, which would jack up with their performance numbers/metrics, they could care less! I suppose drooling from the mouth uncontrollably, almost drowning in one's saliva almost every night, and being in a zombie-like state, to the point where high-functioning decision making is like climbing Mt. Everest, is "progress", and proof that the medication is "working". I can't go to school, HOLD a job, or clean my house, on meds that make one a zombie, who will get hit by a car or suffer a grave accident walking around in this manner. Perhaps, this is what they want -_- . It's common sense in a perverse way. We're just numbers to them. I tried, I tried, I tried so damn hard to make this work THEIR way, pill roulette. The Brooklyn VA in response, "take your pills, see you in 3 months" . I even asked multiple social workers there(one of many, it's a systemic problem, not 1 person) "Suppose I go through the motions, get the degree, get any random job....? What will the VA do to ensure that I'm able to KEEP the job vs. slipping through the cracks due to mental health issues?" Her response: "................." . I guess their job ends once they make their numbers. It's been non-stop pills pills pills. It seems like everyone just does the bare minimum, while I'm jumping through rings of fire mostly alone, trying to help my mental state, with little help or AUTHENTIC help & concern from Mental Health Psychiatrists , at the Brooklyn VA. Every time I schedule an appointment over the phone the only availability they have is 1 month + out. Ridiculous, if I was sick and needed to see a doctor my immune system would have already fought off the virus/bacteria. That or I would be in the ER because I would have gotten even sicker. Horrible. And then every time I schedule a GYN appt, the doctor strolls in late. Like how do you walk in at 1100 for my 0900 appointment? Like I have all day to wait for you. Mta wise only the B8 & B 70 comes here ! Be prepared to go threw metal detectors .. After that there's a information desk if you get lost .... Building is weird but there are signs everywhere to navigate around the building ! Food wise there's a Starbucks stand that closes very early but they also have vending machines with snacks and hotdogs yea ......hotdogs parking wise try to find out nearby !!! Lol if you don't have a car it's kind of out the way but it's and cool little trip to listen to music and read. B8 bus take you right up to the doors and pick you up a few feet away. I still like Manhattan Hospital by the way. But BK is where I go mostly. read more

First id like to start by mentioning how grateful I am to have a hospital that supports veterans like my father and that there's at least a system to provide some relief. Now being in the actual hospital itself is a completely different story. When we stayed in the icu, although the staff was very professional and kind, it was a battle every step of the way. It's incredibly hard for any patient to get the proper rest they need to recover from whatever it is that they're dealing with. We brought our father to the hospital and it truly felt as though the hospital did more harm than good due to the lack of common sense and sensitivity. Our father was in a very fragile state when he entered this hospital and he was given such gruesome and tiring examinations constantly back to back. I understand this is part of the process but if you're going to pick and prod at a man at least give him the proper time to rest so that he can recover. Every single night we had staff come in almost every hour to 2 hours interrupting his desperately needed recovery time. My father also has been taking sleeping medication for the past decade to help him sleep which they denied to provide for him until we fought and fought for it. Imagine taking a drug you desperately need for a decade then being denied that. Imagine the withdrawal you may feel in addition to being in pain and not having the proper rest. Even a healthy human being would suffer under these circumstances. After kissing so much ass to get what we need we finally found some consistency but at this point the damage was done and my father was in an extremely weakened state which accelerated the dying process. Now my fathers a fighter so he managed to live through these brutal conditions for weeks. We were moved at this point to another portion of the hospital which they consider comfort care.. if I could rename it I would call it amateur hour and the toilet bowl. We moved to this wing with the understanding that he would be moved into a private room to peacefully pass with his family surrounding him. We were told there would be little to no interference unless we requested a nurse to come tend to him. Simple things like feeding, changing and medication. The first night the pattern looked something like this. He normally would receive his sleeping medication at 9 pm in the icu. They mentioned 10 is the norm here so we complied and we had to begin our fake smiles and thank yous while watching our father slowly fade away. Our nurse came in at 1030 for the medication, then another man came in to check on his vitals at 1145 interrupting his sleep, then 1245, then another nurse at 130 and when I asked if that was it for the night they said yes til 6 am. Guess what? 445 another knock on the door. I open the door and I'm greeted with an attitude and the staff constantly complains that it's hot in the room while "assisting" my father. One idgaf, two the temp is set to the patients needs not theirs and three the insensitivity and attitude of the staff had me wanting to scream at the top of my lungs but for the sake of my dying father I restrain myself. I'm sitting here in the dark watching my fathers time slip away while my heartbroken mother and sister are sleeping in tears next to me. Literally as I'm typing this a loud speaker announcement is going off at 532 am which is connected directly to the speakers in our room that can not be shut off. They're also going to be coming back in 30 mins. All we want is for my father to pass peacefully but that seems really difficult to ask for here. I have so much more I could say.. if you have a loved one in this hospital and you're struggling I have you in my thoughts and prayers. You are not alone. Please stay strong, stay patient and don't break. Kiss ass, smile and make as many connections as you can for the sake of your loved ones. There are some wonderful people and staff in this hospital but for every one of those there are 10x people that are insensitive, lack common sense and generally just not fit for the job. Brooklyn va hospital if you're reading this please take this as a wake up call, step your game up and start holding people accountable. read more

I normally would not leave a review because I do not like to bash any establishment! But this shit have gone way too far now. Please explain to me how the fuck I came in the emergency room at 10pm where there's no patient in sight but myself. Got checked in and taking to the back where they ask me what my reason coming and got put in a bed. An hour and half later here comes the doctor !!! Like are you really serious right now almost two hours later, what if I had internal bleeding or better yet I had some shit that needed immediate attention, I could of fucking died. Never again for an emergency room where you think you would get fast treatment this place is the worst, I rather go to a regular doc and pay the co payment than come back here again! read more

My "home" VA. Full of well-meaning but overworked people and understaffed. They care. The parking situation is unique. The parking "lot" is the least navigable I've ever encountered. Really. It's horrendous. I suggest parking on Poly Place or 7 Ave and walking, or park in the lot and shake your head after, with the understanding that you'll never do it again. There's a little cart by the elevators with a lady who makes amazing espressos. Always have your ID handy and don't bring a lot of stuff inside, you'll be the jerk who slows the entrance line at the metal detector. It's a government building, don't be surprised. read more

Last June I had an appt. to see the urologist at the Brooklyn, VA for a second opinion. When I arrived I told the med tech I was there for a second opinion for kidney stones. He quickly told me the VA does not offer second opinions. At that point, I left and never saw the doctor. However, 6 months later I received a bill for 65.00 dollars (co-pay). I was outraged. Why would the VA bill me for doing absolutely nothing? So, I went to the Admin Office to complain about it but they couldn't do anything and had no answers. This type of treatment for veterans is disgraceful and shameful. I also discovered they have been billing 3 of my medical insurances including a co-pay of $50.00 every time I have an appointment. I feel this borders on a criminal enterprise and ought to be investigated by the Inspector General. I did put in a complaint with them and now we'll see if they entertain it. I will give you a follow-up on this matter in the near future. read more
