My favorite part of this course is as a higher handicap player, it's not as easy to lose balls on the Nay #2 course as it is on many of the other ones I've played. Lots of open space which is nice for someone that loses more than a couple each round elsewhere. Play can be slow at times. There was a fivesome ahead of us but it wasn't too too bad. Took us about 4.5 hours for 3 of us to finish 18 holes. All in all, I had a lot of fun here. Oh, and the breakfast burritos were pretty damn good. read more

The only gripe i had was that we constantly had to wait.(place is really slow).... the course was supercrowded on a saturday. We rode our bikes around the Rose Bowl and stopped to have lunch, the place is a bit dated and needs to be renovated. The waiter told us they will be remodeling in January 2015, about time. This is a great place to hang out with friends as the place provides plenty of parking and plenty of space indoors and outdoors. I ordered a Reuben sandwich with onion rings which turned out to be really good. The server could have been a bit more attentive especially on a busy Sunday, check up on the patrons to see what more is needed. read more

booked the foursome through website. Two checked in on time and other two arriving late. They had no clue to check in with prior tee time and club house randomly picked one for them. Later "no show" charges found on prior tee time reservation. Called couple of times to fix and the management were rude and not willing to refund. I just tried to call the restaurant at Brookside. The auto answer said to press 2 to get to the restaurant, and then it routed me right back to the original message. I was just trying to find out how late they serve lunch. And while I'm at it, there are very few vegetarian options on the lunch menu. How about an "impossible" burger or veggie sandwich. The servers are very good as is the food. But there is def. room for improvement. read more

What a joke. Booked for Friday 12/15/17 through GolfNow for a price of $36.99 Arrived 30 mins earlier and went to check in. Guy at the window says the price is $46.99, so I show him GolfNow confirmation. He then acts like he's doing me a favor by charging me $37, the price that I was supposed to be paying anyways. Today I get an email from GolfNow saying that I didn't show up for my tee time and so I'm getting charged another $36.99 on top of what I paid on Friday at the course. The customers should not be the ones to pay the price for whatever garbage deal you have with GolfNow. I don't care if GolfNow's customer service sucks, or if their site doesn't work well, or whatever the deal is. It is not my problem. Figure it out yourselves but don't make the customer have to deal with it. As for the course, trash. Fairways are destroyed, tee boxes destroyed, but I guess that was expected. Needless to say, I will not be coming back. Save yourself the money, go somewhere else. read more

I don't usually go to golf courses then this one is beautiful when its hidden away by Pasadena Rose Bowl. The grass is very green and the golf course is well kept up. I enjoyed riding around in the golf cart too while watching golfers hit balls. Driving here the roads may be narrow or curvy. Parking is limited that you have to parallel park on the street if there is no parking in the parking lot then you have to walk to the golf course. read more

I've played the CW Koiner course twice now. The first round mirrored a lot of the reviews here, with bare patches on the fairways and rough spots on the greens, but all in all it was still just about playable and the cheap price merits a second star here. The second round, however, was a complete horror show. When arriving I was told that the greens had been aerated, but when I asked how bad they were playing I was told they were still running ok... I am convinced the individual who told me that must view the surface of the moon as flat and the Rocky Mountains as a small ridge. The majority of greens had been done, badly, and they were wholly unplayable with putts jumping into the air and deviating everywhere. Some of the holes could fit a thumb tip a centimeter down. The leftover sand from the aeration was thick all around the greens, making any chip effectively a bunker shot, and the removed soil was still there too in little lumps that made a good contact very tricky. Add in the bottle caps littering the fairways, which were already pock-marked by unrepaired divots, and a plethora of half smoked and discarded cigarettes on the tees, and it was a round to remember for all the wrong reasons. Lastly, and to my mind saddest of all, the lack of etiquette shown by the patrons of this course is staggering. Three or more practice swings before each shot, failing to call others through when roaming out of bounds for lost balls, or indeed when a clear hole - even 3 - was lost on the group in front, made for an excruciatingly slow round. In my time playing - 21 years spanning four continents - I've rarely seen worse. I'll play the EO Nay course next time out and see if that is any better, but my hopes are low. read more

I have not played this course in 13 years, but the north course is the nicer layout. The cart girls are very friendly along with the staff. In the summer, the temperatures can get above the 90s so you might want to bring a few beverages. The greens in August were being worked on - so not the best of conditions. Overall the couse is in fine shape- but nothing to write home about. Feels very much like any city muni course but for $50 on Friday morning- seems a good deal to me. Includes cart. read more

Terribly managed public course,. Booked thru Yelp, get confirmed, arrived on time, booking can not be seen. Then found an open slate 30min later, 5 Koreans played ahead of our group, nobody stopped them. The 5-some usually drove 100 yards on the tee shot, and the group behind us shooted at least twice next to where we stood waiting for the front group. What a mass, again nobody cares. Facility looked horrible, small parking lot, very slow green, sport fairway with unrepaired marks and holes. Never come here again. read more

Since I was here reviewing something else I thought I would post an update. It has been over a year since I had the described encounter of poor customer service at this course. I have NOT played Brookside since and I have to say I DON'T miss it! I have mainly played LA city courses. ALL OF THEM are nicer and cheaper than Brookside. There is NO REASON ever to play this s-hole again. I also quit the players club yes there were some decent discounts at other courses as well but when I lodged a complaint regarding how I was treated at Brookside I got nothing back....crickets. So if they don't care how their members are treated at the courses they promote then I will take my money and play elsewhere. And I have. read more

3 stars is about right for this course. Flat, every hole looks the same, trees are the only challenge. I played here exactly one year ago, because people kept telling me it was a great course, but I was very disappointed that time. Again I got convinced that they had worked on it and that it was in great shape. Not true at all!!! There are still hundreds of people working on every hole, trucks everywhere, stopping and going as you are hitting. Hundreds of people jogging, walking along the course, yelling on the cell phones. That does not really bother me, but I assumed it would be less trucks on the course and less activity over all... The greens all have a lot a lot of sand and on top of the sand, they add more sand which they die green, to have it blend into the little green grass there is. The fairways have different patches of grass, dead grass, dirt, etc... I waited a year to get back this course, I hope I can wait longer if I play here again. This course is also the "actual" parking lot for the Rose Bowl. When there is a game, the course rents out the fairways for parking, yes "the course fairways" maybe that has something to do with it as well. I'm not sure if they rent out the greens for parking too. Hope this review helps, but if it's your home course, I assume you are proud of it, but Wilson/Harding near the zoo has a lot more to offer then here. Play Well!!!!! read more

Set up a tee time yesterday, lady on the phone said there's a 24 hour policy for cancellation, but if I call early there shouldn't be a problem of waiving the fee...she said the cancellation fee was $10. I asked, "so the most I'll be charged is $10 if I cancel?" She confirmed... I called 22 hours before tee time (2 hours late) to cancel and I was told I was misinformed of getting the fee waived. I proceed to go on the website to see the cancellation fee is $25/player. Nothing like starting my summer vacation by being charged $100 when I was quoted $10 with being told there would be a good chance of it being waived if I called early... read more

Beautiful course, well-maintained, good restaurant (and much-needed bar after that back 9). Bonus points: we had some issues with the GPS on the state of the art cart screens and the staff drove a new cart out to us on the tee box of 6 and helped us swap our equipment to a new cart. Brookside (like Scholl Canyon) has a lot of potential. Fun layout. They overbook this place like nothing I've ever seen. Came here on Friday with a 12:57pm tee time and there was 7 groups waiting on the first tee when it was time for us to tee off. We would have had to wait almost an hour after our tee time to start. We ditched our tee times and upgraded to Angeles National--didn't regret that decision at all. If we had stayed we likely would not have finished the round before the course closed. It was utter chaos. Never seen such a scene at a golf course before. I didn't even bother with getting a refund for our round, I just wanted out of there. Also, the two times I've been there, they have not had balls to hit at the driving range. Not only is this not a great business model (as I would have spent $6-8 more each time on a bucket) it's frustrating to have to go in cold on a round. read more

Course conditions vary but greens are normally in satisfactory conditions. Relatively flat course and most holes are straight and no dogleg or undulations on the course. Barranca runs through the course and comes in play on a few holes. Many holes run parallel to each other. Expect some small greens. read more

This place does an injustice to the game of golf. Negative one star, if I could. Despite the nice course layout and conditions, I don't think I've had a more miserable time playing golf in my life. Sure, there was that time that I shanked multiple golf balls into the same lake multiples times in a row (a la Tin Cup) ... that still doesn't measure up to this experience. 1. Inconvenient parking - this place is located right next to the Rose Bowl where a lot of people like to go for a walk. That's fine and dandy of them, but clearly they should find places to park other than the golf course parking lot. It's Brookside's fault for not enforcing. We parked about a half mile from the starter window... it felt like I came here for a walk myself! 2. Carts - they didn't have enough carts to help everyone! The group ahead of mine, and the group ahead of that one were all waiting on carts. You had 13 people (I counted) waiting on carts after checking in with the window. "You got all these people standing here and looking stupid!" (Inside joke.) And to top it off, the carts didn't have the protective windshield up front. I'm not asking for fancy-shmancy GPS tracking on the carts; just ya know, something to stop the wind and errant golf balls. 3. Fivesomes - in my experience, 5somes are generally a good thing, right? Check your emotions and feelings at the door, grab some alcohol and get ready for some crazy action. Oh 5some in golf? Shoot me in the face. We had two groups of five that was a couple of groups ahead of us (ya follow?). This pretty much left us playing the world's slowest round. From entering the parking lot at 11AM, we did not leave until 5:30PM - without finishing the last two holes. IN CASE NO ONE READS THIS LONG REVIEW, 6.5 HOURS TO PLAY 16 HOLES (and no, you cannot blame my putting this time, heh) 4. Food - doesn't the cart girl want to get golfers to buy alcohol and leave egregious tips? Not this one. After about the 4th hole, we were starving. The chick was driving off like mindlessly instead of trying to, ya know, do her job. I tried to get her attention: excuse me. hi. Ahem, Hi. Hello! HEY! YO! STOP! Finally. That was annoying. 5. Fivesomes - YES, ITS THAT BAD. DID I MENTION THIS ALREADY? HOW SLOW! 6. "Ambassador" - This is a cheap shot on my side, but the Ambassador, a.k.a the greenskeeper (?) didn't have a watch on him. Usually, I thought they drove around the course to keep the pace of play and whatnot. This Ambassador was not so much "Amb" nor "ador", just the middle. :| I'm just bitter, sorry. 7. DMV - psych, this wasn't a DMV. Obviously DMVs have a less wait time. 8. Wet Paint - It dried. I was teeing off on the third hole by then. This review has come undone. Much like our round. No one could get into a rhythm. We left after the 16th hole because the 17th and 18th hole were par 3's. There was a 5some, 3some, and another 3some ahead of us waiting for the 5some to finish. Who knew a place could get from a 2 star to a 1 star within a year of a review? I'm talking about the banquet hall. We had our work event here AGAIN. We used a banquet room that is used in weddings as well. FOOD: Salad - man this salad was wilting already. The salad dressing was the only thing from saving it from ruin... but the greens looked horrible. I would not had served this to my rabbit. -_- But then again, my rabbit eats the good sh*t. Chicken Jumblaya - ... yeah... no. Chicken was dry and it was tiny as heck. Dessert - I was lucky. I was one of the lucky ones to get the bread pudding WITH flavor. Others were not so lucky. AMBIANCE: Same as last time: "Very old looking place on the outside. It reminded me of being built back in the 1970s because of the cabin feel to it. We had the room for our work event through the cafe. It was awkward walking through the cafe to get to our room." PARKING: Horrible. It was a beautiful day - so you're sharing it with golfers who want to make use of this weather to play. OVERALL: Avoid having a banquet here. read more

This review is for their wedding receptions My friend had her reception here last night and it was gorgeous! They had a cocktail hour with an open bar on their lovely lighted patio overlooking the course first, with plenty of cushioned table seats and waitresses roaming around with delicious chicken potstickers and a goat cheese bruschetta. The small bar outside was manned by a knowledgeable (and alcohol-generous) bartender that was fully stocked. After an hour we were all ushered into the Dining Room where 4 long tables were set up in facing the bridge and groom, who had their own table in front of a roaring fireplace. Behind the fireplace was the DJ, dance floor, bar, and some booths to relax in. The food was set up buffet style and absolutely everything was perfect. They had salads, veggies, a couple types of pasta, fluffy mashed potatoes, chicken breasts, and rolls. I went back for seconds! The waiters were all very attentive, noticing when a water glass was empty or a plate was done. While we were all oooing and awing at the bride and groom dancing on the floor, they quietly set a piece of cake in front of every place setting. Being right next to the RoseBowl parking was surprisingly simple for the guests as well, with a decent lot on the side, along with plenty of space nearby on the street. I did not pay for this, so I can't attest to the prices, but as a guest I thought it was just perfect for my friend's special day. read more

We planned everything in a little less than two months and they made it EASY. We mainly worked with Chelsea who responded to every email in minutes and was so sweet and accommodating. They were upfront with all of the pricing and were very patient with my last minute changes. I've been going to this golf for about five years now and have had no problems until recently. The (relatively) new starting manager is extremely rude and treats his customers with an attitude and very little respect. The others are great, just this guy needs to get an attitude change. Besides that, I have one other big complaint. Before, you could pay $15 and they'd send you out on a cart by yourself but now they put you with a stranger and you're both expected to pay $15 (so $30 total). Going with a stranger wouldn't be a problem if it were two men maybe but some women don't feel comfortable going with a man, especially if they're a smoker. When we brought this up, the same aforementioned manager told us to just walk then. Excuse me ?? Like seriously, this golf course has been going downhill as can be read from all the negative reviews and this worker is just driving it into the ground. They have a bi-annual "tequila and tacos" golf tournament, where for $40 you get 3 shots of Patron tequila, and 9 tacos... that alone is worth the entrance fee. This is a historic golf course. Brookside Golf Club is Pasadena history. Operational in 1928, this oldie but a goodie has seen many failures and few glories in its time. if you know an older person who played golf regularly in southern California, they probably have played here. Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer have left divots on various fairways and tee boxes and the #1 course hosted the Los Angeles open in 1968. Two courses are utilized by various skilled players with the #1 course being more difficult that features one of the longer par 4s in the country. The Rose Bowl is adjacent to it and uses the course as a parking lot due to the lack of parking for major events. The courses have been flooded throughout the years and is quite resilient but slow to recover. Also, a water transportation system intertwines the courses, something I have never seen before and think of it as a quirk. Brookside has a bad reputation for slow play, poor conditioning and bad service. However, bad experiences has a tendency of lingering much longer than positive ones. Regardless what you have heard or experienced, Brookside deserves your respect despite waiting or sharing a booth at the small driving range. 1)Golf The green fees and range balls are reasonably priced, paying $35 to walk on the morning of May 5th and took 4.5 hours to finish. Typically, golf courses have their peak play between 9 and 11 but here the flow of golfers coming and going throughout my round remained constant. Course reps stand on the first tee to help establish pace of play for both courses. They also work with the starters to handle the barrage of people who are looking to enjoy the day, chasing a little white ball. The C.W. KOINER course (aka course #1) needs to be walked in order to be appreciated. Its design is classic with undulating fairways, well placed fairway bunkers and fast but fair greens. This course is difficult, I judge that statement it with a small amount of divots on the greens despite its heavy play. Holes 2, 3, 4, 11,15 and 16 are my favorites because of their beauty and difficulty, a pure pleasure to experience. Pace of play is important here and difficult to manage. I would love to see a program enacted which offers a small discount to players who go through a program that teaches players how to play quickly as well as help maintain the course by repairing and replacing their divots. Also the maintenance crew needs to do a better job of identifying "in need of repair" spots on the fairways and roughs, so players can be offered a free drop instead of playing in loose dirt or wet spots. I do recognize this course is well maintained and worked on throughout the day and night and am quite thankful for it. I believe the management company that runs the Brookside Golf Club should raise the rates 30% The added income can be used to replace the sand in the bunkers with a higher quality grain,add staff for better course maintenance as well as reduce play which will also help alleviate the wear and tear of the courses made by duffers. 2)Restaurant The restaurant's atmosphere has a throwback feel which I love, featuring comfy chairs and mural like windows looking out to the 1st tees to both courses. I had the golfers breakfast for $10 that had two eggs, hash browns, 2 pancakes, coffee and around 8 strips of bacon. I may be wrong the number of bacon strips but I expecting two strips but got a lot more. My breakfast was good and enjoyed my conversation with Ventor, my waiter. 3)Staff Without a good staff, any course would struggle and I feel the staff that coordinates groups are overwhelmed but friendly. Communication is vital and the smallest mistake can spiral and cause a setback of tee times that compound throughout the day. How can a person be accommodating, friendly, attentive and deal 250 golfers a day? These people are human, after all and should be be given slack if someone does not kiss your butt. I do have a problem with fivesomes going out. I know its not policy and not encouraged but it still happens and it needs to stop. 4)Conclusion Please don't think of my review as negative because its not, despite not giving this course 5 stars. I believe only the best get the best review and Brookside is not PGA West. So if that's what you are looking for than take yourself, $500 and go enjoy an incredible golf experience. Extremely poor course management. I'd rather go to the DMV, post office, and dentist on the same day, than to replay this place when they have shotgun starts. Even on a regular day, it's as if they book multiple four/fivesomes for the same time slot. Show up early and still wait behind 3-4 groups of four/fivesomes to tee off. Think that sounds bad? Go there the same day they're prepping for a game at the rosebowl next door. We inadvertently made that mistake. They packed as many people as they could in the am, and announced a shotgun start with no prior warning when booking. Finally tee off at 8 (tee time was 7:30), but not before having to drive to our starting hole THROUGH a tournament that was let out a few minutes earlier. Did I mention it was a shotgun with two groups per hole? It was just ridiculous with people scrambling to find their starting hole. Sounds easy enough, except all the signs, tee box markers, and hole numbers were missing. Guess they were worried that the people that would be parking there for the football game would steal them, so they took all the signs and markers out. Instead, what we found was huge generators and heavy duty lights in the middle of the fairways. Try complaining and you'll simply get a shoulder shrug. Course lay out is pretty decent for both courses. Course one is longer. Fairways are just ok. Greens are fast. You can find dirt patches with fairway shots. Their "fix" is to outline with spray paint for a free drop. A 5 - 5.5 hr round is about as fast as you're going to get here. I try to avoid this place now. There are lots of other courses out there that are managed better, and actually put in effort to provide a better experience. read more

Let me first say this - Brookside used to be a great golf course. Back in the day, it hosted the L.A. Open and the National Public Links Championship. Switch to 2009 - it is still a decent course, but there a few downsides: during football season, the course is used for Rose Bowl parking for the UCLA games; now, I love me some UCLA, but this can't possibly be good for the grass, right? Also, it seems like they aerate the greens,etc. more often than other courses and that can lead to a bumpy game, plus, the greens already aren't the best. Oh, and during this water shortage they aren't watering the grass as much, so some areas are looking a bit dingy. All-in-all, it's a decent golf course. I recommend course 1 - it's tougher than course 2. Oh, and the beer is really cold in the clubhouse! read more

Ok so 3 stars means average right? Well, this course is far better than an average municipal golf course. It is usually well kept, the tee boxes are mostly nice and flat, greens are in great condition most of the time, and the fairways are also kept in great condition. Judging by the course condition itself, I wouldnt argue with anybody that would give this place 5 stars (although that is a bit of a stretch). The reason why I give this place 3 stars is because every time I have played here in the past 5 years, there was always a 15-30min wait. Even with a tee time reservation. There may have been a few times when I actually teed of on time but expect to wait 15-30min before teeing off. Not only do you usually start late, this place seems to overbook tee times. There's always a good 10-15min wait in between holes. Expect to wait even longer when you approach a par 3. There's usually good 3 or 4 groups before you waiting to tee off on a par 3 by the time you get there. Expect 5:30+ rounds. Another bad thing about Brookside is that at their prime time tee times, the tee times are excessively expensive. I've seen tee times for a saturday morning go for $75. That is WAY too expensive for this course. At most, this course shouldn't charge more than $49 in my honest opinion. The workers here are very nice, friendly, polite, respectful, and unfortunately, this is one of the few courses near where I live so I have no choice but to keep coming back. I'm happy to play here and use this course but I just think it could be a lot better with the price and pace of play. read more

This place has become awful... 1. They are usually 30 mins behind at 9am. 2. They send out 5somes 3. Today, their range ball retriever was broken, so nobody could hit balls (we call their range balls "rocks"). 4. Their check in system is broken. When I went to check in today, another guest came up behind me (to get refunded for range balls) and the starter took him before me, then got distracted with another guest before I asked for him to give me my card back so I can go to the other window which was empty. He then snapped out of it and finally helped me. 5. It always takes FOREVER to check in. 6. The awesome guy who grills burgers/dogs at #9 wasn't there ON A BUSY SUNDAY, so we went inside for food. We ended up sitting down, said we wanted to leave quickly, but waited 45 minutes for 3 burgers and a pastrami. I'm not joking. We asked for a discount for the wait and she gave us 25% off.
